The Five Guys Burger Joint was empty, only staff. I ordered a Burger, Fries, and a soda. The burger sides grilled onions and American cheese and Bun. The fries were fresh, slight limp, slight crunch, bountiful, and overflowing. The burger looked great, juicy, hot, and nice wrap. The second bite in, I noticed a weird aftertaste, looked over at the staff, and saw them chuckling, not sure why! I tried Salt and Pepper on the burger, and still the aftertaste. At just short of half-eaten, I decided to chuck it! The place was spot-on clean, and all staff were friendly. The Peanuts, as my final try, were nice and pea-nutty. Confused by the weird aftertaste. Usually when you go to a fast food restaurant you expect something fast. Fives guys did not provide the speediness. When I placed my order there was only 1 other customer in front of me. However, it took 20 minutes for a single hamburger. Perhaps there were some huge orders in front of me or perhaps the restaurant is understaff. Perhaps this is the usual queue time for a hamburger at Five Guys. I personally never waited anywhere near 20 minutes for a hamburger at any burger fast food chain restaurants. Was it worth the wait? Kind of. The burger was fresh and loaded when you order it all the way. I always find it difficult to keep the burger together. Things can get messy here at Five Guys. I am a fan of their patties and bun. Hopefully next time I don't have to wait as long on a not so busy day. read more

I ordered online and picked up. I can see some have written bad reviews of this location, however, I had a pleasant experience here. Whoever was the lady making the sandwich on January 7th, you brought customer service to a whole new level. My order wasn't ready the moment, I stepped in, but she was definitely working on my order. The two sandwiches were made perfectly. She included sides of hot sauce as well as malt vinegar. She also made conversation the 3 minutes I waited. Due to COVID, their soda fountains have the option of running on your phone so that you have a touchless experience. Parking was not an issue as this was a weekday afternoon. Yo, Five Guys always comes in for the win! Consistently great food and complimentary peanuts. You ask for more in one place. The burgers are fairly priced and you can add as many toppings as you'd like for FREE. The fries don't come with the burger, but they definitely give you more fries than you pay. So in that regard getting the fries to share might be a better option. The food is usually made quick unless you happen to come in when they're super busy. In those cases expect to add 10-15 additional minutes to your wait time. The ambiance is very casual and friendly and it's perfect for groups. I fly to the East coast once a month and enjoyed five guys before it ever came to SC. A cheeseburger in NYC is $1.75 LESS expensive than it is in Santa Cruz. It should also be pointed out the owner of these locations owns the Shell station on Ocean St where they regularly gouge you for for almost $1.00 a gallon more for gas and will not let you use the restroom. That being said I went in during a high risk COVID period and ordered dinner for 6. $12.00 for a cheeseburger with no fries or drink. $12.00 cheeseburgers. The total was $67.00 for a dinner with five burgers. With no drinks. But they do not accept $100.00 bills. So how was I supposed to pay for my $67.00 hamburgers?? After checking with the manager the clerk told me they would not accept my $100.00 bill. That it was policy not to accept them. It was obviously real and they could have checked it a number of ways. $100.00 for a place that charges $12.00 for a cheeseburger. I feel local business is a part of our community and this is a place that is only on the lookout for themselves and their bottom line. I imagine they don't do $100.00 bills because that would require a supervisor to manage change and they didn't have a manager on duty. If you can go somewhere else think about it. Maybe this guy will start to think about the customers in his community instead of exposing them to more risk during a pandemic than needed. read more

After my experience with my family trying to have a late night meal at the Five Guys in Santa Cruz, I called their corporate offices. I also wrote to them to advise them of the horrific issues around the appearance of a filthy restaurant. It has now been a week since I called. CRICKETS. Not a peep. No phone call. No email. NOTHING. Nice to know the corporate crew has a similar attitude about attending to issues that are of concern to their clients. Oh well....the good news is The Habit is going to be open soon on Ocean St. I have been to three different Habit locations and found them superior to Five Guys. Here is hoping that that same street urchins that have ruined the Five Guys will not venture out from their rats nest and infest the new Habit spot. read more

Was in the area for work, and the gentlemen I work with went there and I ended up meeting them there. I got a Double Bacon Burger with a medium fries. Within five minutes, my order was up and ready to go. The burger was nice and juicy, as for the fries, they were cooked to perfection. I could not eat all the fries, so I took them back to work with me and were still good a few hours later. The fries from Five Guys, I like them; because, they have the skin on them, which I just love. All in all, a great first trip to this Five Guys. read more

I'm a huge fan of Five Guys in general, and have found them to be pretty consistent--clean stores, friendly, efficient, competent employees, etc. This store not so much. My husband and I were there on Monday at maybe 11:15 AM, shortly after they opened (we were order #1). We walk in and 2 young guys are working. They are pleasant enough but appear to be stoned. Ah, Santa Cruz. I order my burger in the lettuce wrap with mushrooms as I always do. He says they don't have lettuce wraps today but do have lettuce bowls. Here I was thinking lettuce is lettuce, silly me. Ok, fine, put it in a bowl. We both order fries, mine with no salt. He has to ask me again, after we sit down, what topping (singular) I ordered on my burger. When our food comes up it's all in one bag (they usually put the no salt fries in a separate bag) so I ask which one has no salt and he says neither one has salt, with no apology or offer to fix it. They were just too lazy to shake salt on one order of fries and not the other. Ok, whatever, the husband can salt his own fries. My lettuce bowl was slightly wilted, mangled lettuce bits with the burger and mushrooms plopped on top. Tasted ok, though. The store was filthy, which is weird since they'd just opened and served zero customers before us, so clearly it hadn't been cleaned the night before, and they hadn't used the first 15 minutes they were open to clean anything either. The counter where you pick up your food was smeared with grease and crumbs and the floor had peanut debris all over it. Makes me wonder how clean the food prep area was. My husband reports the bathrooms were kinda gross (although he's pickier about public bathrooms than I am, so take it with a grain of salt). It was an unusually warm day in Santa Cruz, and I realize a lot of buildings there probably just don't have AC since it's so rarely needed, but it was HOT in the restaurant with the sun beating down on the windows along the side of the building. It would have helped to prop the doors open for ventilation, but the stoned kiddos apparently didn't think of that. They did think to turn on the music, which was way too loud. I realize you're now picturing me as a cranky old person, and I'm okay with that. But in my defense, even my rock musician husband thought it was too loud. The final insult was that they had only the dull, unpopular colors of crayons for coloring index cards for the bulletin board, so my husband used a sad shade of grayish blue to color them a sort of retro yelp review on an index card. I believe it included the words "seriously?" and "you can do better." I hope he found that cathartic because I imagine the employees just rolled it up and smoked it after he left. read more

This is the pacific avenue edition of the five guys burger chain which I have mixed feelings about. I mean, the burgers are good, but that's about it. As far as parking goes, it's street only which just means there is no parking. There is however a pay lot not even a block away in either direction off pacific avenue. It's also not even a block away from the main transit center/bus station so it's really easy to get here some way that does not involve driving. This store has been open a couple of years now, so it can't be exactly be new, but at times it still feels new. The layout is pretty standard-primary entrance at one end by the order counter, lots of table/chair combos, lots of window seating and it's a bright relentlessly lit place , which may or may not be clean.There are the usual bags of self serve peanuts and bags of dry goods racked up on the floor across from the counter. They have those coke freestyle machines what allow for myriad soda choices that are so awesome when they are fully working yet suck so bad when they don't. There are a couple of tables complete with metal sunshades out side for you to sit and be panhandled at. Service is hit and miss. It's the order at counter and pick up when called model-although their online ordering app works extremely well-and there is usually a line. The order part of the line moves quick, but the getting order part can bog down. The good news is that they try to make the burgers when ordered which really helps the burger quality. The bad news is that isn't necessarily true for the sad, sad fries. The staff here are in tough spot. This is neighborhood has high numbers of indigent/homeless/mentally ill/drunk transient type folks and they are more or less under siege at all times. Combined with the equally high numbers of entitled tourists coming through and well, don't expect to be greeted with zestful jolliness until they figure out what you are exactly. This is especially true when just asking to use the restrooms. The focus here is however on the burgers, and they nail it. The burgers are consistently fresh, melty and/or juicy and overall are some of the best that you will overpay for. The fries can be good verging on great but alas they are just as likely to be limp, congealed sadness in a bag. If you do get the tasty hot version eat when they are warm. Once they cool down it's no good. If you are vegetarian/vegan you are out of luck. There are no real veg options here other then the peanuts and sometimes the fries. While this is the best five dollar burger meal you'll ever pay fourteen dollars for it's otherwise totally meh. read more

As a recent evacuee, I have temporary housing right nearby Five Guys. I was craving a shake and a burger, so I came here after work one day. The cashier lady was super nice and was patient as I was trying to decide what to have. I ordered a little hamburger all the way without tomatoes and I also added A1 steak sauce. I also got a small fries and an Oreo shake. The little hamburger was the perfect size since it only has one beef patty and I like that you can add A1 steak sauce. They wrap in aluminum foil, so when I took it to my place the bread was a bit soggy. The fries were good and I like that they fry it in peanut oil - I feel I can taste more of the natural potatoes flavor lol. They always add a full scoop of fries to the bag too! Just happened to be downtown right when this place opened so I stopped in for a burger. I like to say Five Guys is like In-N-Out on steroids! The burgers are all double patties and a large selection of toppings are all free! My custom creation was the bacon cheese burger with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, grilled jalapeños, and A1 steak sauce, it rocked! Other available topping include lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, relish, ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, mayo, and possibly a few more I didn't list. Even the shakes can have toppings including bacon! You get free peanuts if you want them. They have the cool Coke machine with a hundred plus flavors. They are known for their French fries which are huge orders and perfectly crisp. The place is roomy inside with lots of seating and they even have a few tables outside that are dog friendy... Ill be back to try the shakes with bacon, you should give them a try! read more
