Trofie marsala: excited as this pasta shape is hard to find. Fine but could've used a bit more depth of flavor. 3.75 stars

Italian restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz with classic and few unique dishes and stellar cocktails. 3.5 stars Food: 3.5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 3 Opentableable: yes Return worthiness: maybe Highlights: - Trofie marsala: this pasta shape is hard to find and when I do it's always with pesto so this was an interesting combo. Could've used a bit more depth of flavor and less soupy texture as I'm a fan of marsala. 3.5 stars - Meat ragu: meaty hub thought it was tasty. 3.5 stars - They made my son a fettuccine with chicken and butter he LOVED which I greatly appreciated. - Banana old fashioned: my hub could not stop raving about this cocktail - Atmosphere: tables in one room and bar in the other Midlight: - Bruchetta: fresh tomatoes were great, but couldn't get over the sliced bread not being toasted which lacked that crusty texture. 3 stars Lowlights: - [[HIGHLIGHT]]The website and menu framed it as an upscale special occasion italian restaurant. It was fine, but didn't find that to be the case for our family holiday meal.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Solid Italian food and cocktails would consider coming back for.

I think this may be a bit of a hidden gem. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very mellow/not busy on a Thursday night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The appetizers were the highlight. Both the Elk Carpaccio and the Fritto Misto were super good. And where do you get Elk? How cool is that. And Fritto misto was very well fried and crispy. Both were very healthy sized portions as well, we were expecting them to be at least only half as large. The cocktails were also very good. Clean, fresh, well balanced. We got a Spanish Paloma and a Girl in Every Port, and both were very tasty. For mains my husband got the Zuppa de Pesce which was good - had a ton of seafood in it and again was pretty large. But the apps were better. I got the special salmon linguine with vodka sauce and asparagus. The salmon was quite good, but the linguine itself was a bit undercooked, and the sauce was a bit too rich. We both were very full though with two apps and a main. The burgers I saw looked good - so since we weren't blown away by our mains, I think that could be the secret - come for cocktails, apps, and the burger.

The best food in Santa Cruz without a doubt! We had dinner here Saturday night two weeks in a row. Last week we started with the Mushrooms, Fritto Misto and House Made Bread. The Fritto Misto is lightly dusted and fried perfectly. The calamari and tiger shrimp are just delicious. They have perfected their method. We had the Lobster Ravioli as our main entree and the Sea Scallop entree. Exquisitely presented and delicious! They do not skimp on their ingredients. Tonight we had to order the mushrooms again and the Fritto Misto appetizer. We also tried the roasted brussel sprouts. Again, it was all served to perfection. We ordered the Seafood Risotto and the Elk Carpaccio. It was beautiful sliced and prepared. The Elk was sweet and savory. It was a delicious complex blend for your entire palate. The Seafood Risotto was over flowing with seafood. Wow! This is the place to go! And the service we received was impeccable. They time the appetizers, entrees and desserts. Oblo has trained their staff in service and it shows. They are attentive and are constantly clearing plates. The servers and staff know what they are doing. I am raving about this restaurant! It is just what downtown Santa Cruz needs. Make a reservation. You will Not be disappointed!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I'm rooting for this place, but they need to 'step up' their outdoor seating game![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We live in a town where people like being outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The full bar, happy hour deals, and friendly staff are all winners. [[HIGHLIGHT]]With a brighter sign/ lights and some outdoor ambiance magic, I'm confident they'll be the 'go-to' spot in no time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food and drinks are already on point - let's hope they can 'dish out' some outdoor charm soon!

Our first time since they change the name and ownership. The changed is "good". Bar area is so much better, counter is more modern. The table in the middle is a good addition. Our bar guys are so nice.

Matcha crème brûlée with sour cherries

Definitely some of the best eats I've experienced. Service was spot on throughout our meal. We will be returning soon!

The good: solid cocktails. Frito Misto app was good ( especially the shrimp). The bad: main courses were meh. Seafood Paeea was mediocre at best. Wife's burger was "disgusting" and over cooked. She barely ate half. Fries sucked. Service was pretty slow, but our waitress was nice and polite. Ambiance: anyone who has lived in Santa Cruz for a while knows this building used to be Hobee's cafe and after that Cafe Mare. Sadly, I can't unsee either of those restaurants. I could see this turning into an "old people's" hot spot just like the previous two restaurants at this location. I can't think of any reason to go back other than maybe to grab a cocktail and an appetizer (maybe). 3 stars might be a touch generous.

I'm not sad to bench the Pizza Port hat I've kept alive since a San Diego visit in 2022, but it's been in the fight one round too long. I washed it once in the dishwasher, as it claimed it could handle, and the logo is barely legible anymore. I love it, and will keep it, but this Beer Thirty hat is clean. Barely touched. Except by the cat? Some feline fuzz up on that shelf clings to the bill. I don't see a cat anywhere. Nocturnal, perhaps. This lid is bright and optimistic. Gotta don the cap before the sando arrives, lest I prematurely age it with grease spots. For now, it's a pristine, high-contrast, six-color surge atop my ridiculous hair. After lunch, it will probably attract local canines, who love a salted pork perfume with subtle notes of meow. Working backward, the second order of business was to order from the adjacent restaurant, Carpo's. Hard to go wrong with a BLT. Order of business number one, obviously, was to choose my brunch beer. I'm an aging West Coast IPA enthusiast who in recent years has moderated my dwindling prime by embracing West Coast Pilsners as an alternative, and for good reason. After a couple West Coast IPA's I sometimes lose all sense of space, time, propriety. Beers three and four become a forgone conclusion, and then I'll find myself at the Over The Hill Gang Saloon singing Eddie Rabbit to beers number six and seven. The pils, with it's 1.5% reduction in ABV, sets me up for a sustainable buzz and helps reduce the likelihood of my needing bail money later. Today is the first day of vacation, however, so 7% IPA it is! I get most of it down with the appearance of control, without seeming like too much of a day drunk, but I slug back the rest real quick in order to procure the second beer before the BLT arrives. IPA number two and I resettle at the picnic table. And just as I take a fresh swig and exhale the last two weeks of stress, I think to myself. I could sit here all fucking day. Outdoor, shaded patio, about the size of an NBA court. One half allows kids. The other, the one with cornhole, does not. I used to love having a place to take my kids when they were younger, so they could run around and watch me and others drink. Now that the babies are all grown up, I do not want to drink with children. Is that strange? Bully for the owners to consider both approaches. A little after midday on a Monday, there are no kids. Just me, some dude on his phone, and three old hippies, scattered about the place. We, the five of us, are each flying solo. Yet each is more content than the next. No male loneliness epidemic here. Just some dudes zenning out instead of carrying day jobs. "Dennis!?" Carpo's window suddenly is calling my name. Good timing. I was trending toward beers three and four without food in my belly, so this will help slow my roll. Two West coast brews in, it's only 1:30pm. Here, they arm you with a sandwich if you need one and throw you into the ring. One half of the BLT got tabasco, an old fave. The other half got a sriracha I've never seen before. They spar for top masculine condiment. Nobody sticks around to see who wins. Each is its own pre-bout steroidal flex, and like most fights, the interest is in the hype, the build up. When they finally go toes, it fizzles. Indeed by the time I wolfed the first half, I barely tasted the Tabasco. I got some light notes of spice in the sriracha side, but the referee was the story tonight. Mr. Bacon, he ran a steady ship, put a kibosh on all the nonsense, moderated the entire battle with an able, yummy, smoky hand. Casinos and books are usually the real winners in these fights. Their role was today played by toasted sourdough. OMG was the bread good! I have one more swazzle remaining of my beer. Strike that. Two swazzles. Time enough for just a few more words. I will save them for texting my Oakland pals to let them know how much I love this place.
