They had my up and walking before I went home. Dr Kaiser's office staff was on the ball about getting me all the meds I needed before my surgery and after when I would run out. I meet with his PA-C Michael LeDoux after the surgery's and got the all clear. I am now 8 months out on my left knee and 3 months out on my right knee. I did PT for my left knee and I am doing PT for my right knee know, almost finished. I feel a 100% better then every. I have gotten my quality of life back. I am able to do more and more every day. I wouldn't change anything about my surgery or recovery. I just don't know why I waited so long!

After initial exam, he provided 3 possible scenarios, 1 of which I anticipated. MRI confirmed portion of finger needed to be amputated and pathology confirmed osteomyelitis in portion removed. Surgery was done under a nerve block so no need for general anesthesia. Six stitches and a dressing later I was on my way home. Wound healed without issue. Dr Stein is very kind. He was very open and honest during initial exam. He asked lots of questions and answered the ones I had. He didn't push surgery but let's face it. If the problem existed for over a year , my physicians kept prescribing antibiotics and the finger had become misshapen, I knew surgery was the only option.

[the backstory] I've…read morebeen suffering from a major hip problem due to Osteonecrosis for a couple years. After a pretty severe fall, the "I can deal with it" turned into a significant hit to my quality of life. I could no longer walk without a cane and insane amounts of Oxycontin twice a day. I put up with the cane and Oxycontin through 4 MRIs, 3 CAT scans and more x-rays than I've ever had in my life. After 11 months of different surgical teams, they finally decided that I needed a total hip arthroplasty. So I had my anterior anthroplasty done done by an amazing and talented team of surgeons. I went into surgery at 0730 and was convalescing in my hospital room six hours later. When the physical therapist came in to evaluate me a couple hours later (about ten hours after the start of my surgery), he was happy to see me using a walker to get from my bed to the latrine and back with little assistance. Fast forward to the next morning. After a visit from the surgeons and anesthesiologist, I was deemed ready to be discharged. And I was very happy for that diagnosis. Happy, that is, until my insurance company said I'd be discharged to home. Wait, what? Home? I could only get out of bed with assistance, walk twenty feet with a walker a considerable pain, and the insurance company was sending my home? WTF? So I called the mediator to ask why would I be sent home to a 100 year old house with poor access to necessary facilities (toilet/shower). After a lot of back and forth. insurance company relented and offered a week of in-patient physical/occupational therapy. [end backstory] I was released from the hospital and transferred to Select via ambulance 36 hours after surgery. I don't really remember much from my arrival except that the transfer from the ambulance gurney to my private room bed was painless. Since I was transferred on a Friday night, there wasn't a doctor to greet me, but the entire staff made me feel welcomed. My first night in Select had a visit from an RN every two hours to check my vitals, assess my pain level, and provide prescriptions as required. My first full day in Select was pretty amazing, with the entire staff checking in on me on a two and four hour schedule. The nursing staff helped me stay in front of my significant pain with immediate and long lasting Oxycontin. I was kept on a four hour schedule of pain medication for the first four days in rehab, then as warranted. Even though I arrived on a Friday night after closing time, I was scheduled for physical and occupational therapy the next morning. I had my OT first thing in the morning just to see how I could take care of myself (getting out of bed, walking, going to the bathroom etc). Obviously I needed a lot of work on those items. The OT set goals for me to meet over the next five days (get out of bed without assistance, walk to the bathroom without assistance etc). Then I had my PT appointment. The PT, like the OT, assessed my abilities and set goals for my stay. [I should mention that 90% of the PT/OTs are bona fide doctors. Don't let their youth fool you.] I had an initial PT/OT on my weekend arrival, but then was assigned a dedicated PT and a dedicated OT for the rest of my stay. Both of them were amazing. I've never been in a rehab facility, and only have memories of a grandparent being in one. If I was sent to a rehab facility like my grandmother, I would have been a sad camper. Her [my grandmother's] rehab facility smelled of urine, was staffed by angry people (angry to the point of caustic) and was a horror show on every level. Select really changed my mind about what rehab hospitals can be. Every.single.person I came into contact with, from my assigned MD, to RNs to PTs and OTs to CNAs and housekeepers to kitchen staff were incredible. I complained about the first meal served to me and received a visit from the kitchen director to figure out what I needed over the course of my stay. I wasn't quite ready to be released after my first five days, so the in-house advocate worked on my behalf to extend my stay for another five days. She even set up all of the home care devices I needed upon release to my house. Here's the bottom line about Select Rehabilitation Hospital. I told my mom and her husband that if they ever needed to in-patient rehabilitation, this is the place they should advocate for. Select has a top of the line rehabilitation staff, an amazing support staff (MD/RN/CNA/Kitchen/Housekeeping) that provides a positive and whole-person approach to the rehabilitation process. After less than one month from a total hip arthroplasty, I am virtually cane free (except for long walks), thanks to the dedication and professionalism of the staff. I should add that there were patients in worse shape that me that I witnessed amazing improvements in their physical abilities over the short time I stayed here. Highly recommended.

But I worked for a rehab therapy agency for 11 years and saw how much good comes when patients are treated by A+ therapists. In May 2021 I fell in the shower and tore my rotator cuff after already struggling with frozen shoulder; I needed pain relief and rehab STAT. I was evaluated and treated by Michael Landin, PT, and depended on him for pain relief for two years. After shoulder rehab ended, my whole body needed a lot of attention, but no matter what we tried I wasn't really improving. When Mike left in April of 2023, I transferred to Jorge, because I had watched him for two years and knew he was the best PT I had ever seen, and, well, only the best for this princess! TBH, I was so loyal to Mike that it took me some time to trust Jorge completely but letting him treat me was definitely the right decision. Jorge works hard to figure out my weird body, and I am extremely grateful for his sharp skills and superior knowledge. He has helped me make so much progress and I can finally feel and see the difference in my body. I now trust him implicitly and credit him with helping me more than any health care practitioner ever has. I seek to surround myself with people who inspire me and Jorge does so without fail WHILE helping me heal and figure out my body's quirks. I usually leave feeling like I learned something and can grow into a healthier version of me. I absolutely loved my experience at the Physical Rehabilitation Institute, and that's saying a lot…read morebecause I think physical therapists are modern day torture agents. Dr. Molina has a bedside manner that should be taught in every medical school in the US. He assessed my knee injury without any medical records or films (thanks Army medicine) and told me, in detail and in a way I could understand it, what he believed the issue was. The next visit, I brought in the results of both my CT scans, X-rays, and MRI, and he was 100% correct with his diagnosis. Everything he said was wrong was proven on the studies. The office staff are personal, with just the right amount of conversation and instructions on what exercises I needed to do, what they were designed for, and how to do them properly at home without the equipment. My rating was increased by 1/2 star from 4 1/2 because the only "negative" and I use that word very loosely, was that they play Christian music and have Bibles out throughout the office. If you're not a religious person or a Christian, that may make you feel out of place or uncomfortable. I believe it's their prerogative to play whatever they feel in their private facility, but it did stand out to me as I considered how people of other faiths would feel. The care you receive at this facility outweighs that, but I'm also not an extremely devout religious person.

This was literally the worst medical experience I have ever had. I came in with a running injury…read moreand I was told to stop all lower body workouts, to stop running during the treatment, and to consider retiring from running entirely (I am not even 30 and have never had an injury before this). Dr. Bussey never even asked to see my running form! I would always have to wait at least 20 minutes minimum (up to 45 minutes once) to see him. He never made adjustments to my treatment plan and when I told him of new pain, he would dismiss it, blaming it on my lifestyle choices without asking about them (though I did the same lifestyle choices with no pain prior to the injury). Due to not working out my lower body, I actually got worse by the end of my time with him. He had an attitude that gave me the impression he was disinterested and burnt out and every time I would tell him about my new pains, he would dismiss them, so I never returned. DO NOT GO TO THIS PHYSICAL THERAPIST. I did like the front office girls and the techs - that is the only redemptive part of the experience. If you are looking for amazing Physical Therapists, GO TO PROMOTION!!! Promotion Physical Therapy has a Stone Oak location as well as many others throughout San Antonio. I went to them a few months after my time with Dr Bussey where I couldn't even tolerate sitting for more than 45 minutes (at its worse, I couldn't even last 10 minutes - like I said, I got WORSE under Dr. Bussey's care). It turns out I was a "complex case," but Dr. Oliva and Dr. Papke who were both assigned to my case took the time to sit, listen, constantly reassess, and explain what was going on. I have predominantly worked with Dr. Papke, and I am so grateful for how kind, validating, and competent he is. I no longer have daily pains & am slowly upping my running volume, which I have been trying to do since my injury in November!

I also participated in the Eva Mireles Memorial Run held in Uvalde March 15 of 2025 just 7 months after my 2nd surgery I enrolled in the 5k . I signed up again this year for the 5k on March 14, 2026 . My knees did great . I've noticed that my knees get better with each passing year . BYW I also attend LA fitness regularly !
