Contrary to what they would like us to believe, doctors (including surgeons) are like automobile mechanics, plumbers, artists, pilots, and every other profession ... inasmuch as there are good ones and not so good ones. There is not a deity among the lot of them. However, some are excellent and most are good. Only a few are awful and shouldn't be practicing medicine at all, or at the very least not surgeons. Surgery not only requires medical knowledge, it requires the manual dexterity of an artist, the compassion of a saint, the obsession with cleanliness of a germaphobe, and a perfectionist's attention to detail. Believe it or not, there are absolutely excellent surgeons and you can find them by doing online research. It is also a good idea to research the hospitals in your area and choose from the surgeons who practice in the best hospitals. My wife recently had total knee arthroplasty (replacement surgery) of both knees by one of the most highly recommended orthopedic surgeons in America. He performed the surgery at a hospital that specializes in orthopedic surgery and they were absolutely fantastic in every possible way, even including the quality of food. Every detail from admitting to post-surgery care was the highest possible quality. I can't recommend them highly enough. Her surgeon's name is Dr. Christopher Phelps of the Orthopedic Performance Institute and he performed her surgery (both knees) at Legent Orthopedic & Spine Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Doctor Phelps spent a great deal of time with her to properly diagnose her condition (cartilage in both knees was damaged beyond repair and the pain was crippling). He tried non-surgical remedies, which worked for awhile, but surgery was the only long-term solution. Dr. Phelps employs a surgical technique that avoids cutting the muscles. This significantly reduces post-operative pain and recuperation time. Her anesthesiologist, who is just as critically important to successful surgery as the surgeon, was Dr. Khang Vu. He visited her before surgery and listened carefully to her description of a bad experience she had with anesthesia during surgery several years ago. Dr. Vu was very gentle and she didn't even wake up with a sore throat after surgery. Post surgery in-home nursing care and physical therapy by SOAR (Specialists in Orthopedics and Recovery) has been equally good. Fantastic experience. read more

I was referred to orthopedic performance Institute by another physician for an issue that I was having with my shoulder. The soonest they could book me an appointment was two months out. There was a mixup in communication for my appointment time and I missed it. They sent me a bill for $50 for a no-show fee. I called to speak with two different people about getting the fee waived because of the mixup. Not only would they not waive the $50 fee, both women that I spoke with were very unfriendly and uncaring. (Janette was one of them. Can't remember the other lady). read more

Dr Phelps is the best, I had a hip and knee replacement and went home the same day. He is very busy because he is the best. He is funny and kind, but remember he does surgeries all day. Patient Beware! I am here to inform you of my experience with Dr. Matthew M. Dwyer, MD. I had a fall on 10/31/20 and visited Dr Dwyer's office on 11/2/20. It was a last minute appointment so my initial visit was with his PA, Andrej J. Arquitola. They performed an x-ray on my right hand/wrist and the PA determined I had a fracture in the scaphoid bone in my left wrist. They issued me a brace and scheduled a CT scan at Baptist imagining. Shortly after the CT scan, I had a follow up with Dr Dwyer to provide the results, and he informed me there is no fracture. The pain must be coming from ligament strain and what the PA saw on the Xray must be some sort of arthritic wear and tear (laymen's term). He had me come back in two weeks for a follow up. In the follow up (roughly a month after the incident) I mentioned the pain is still constant and was limited to what I could do with my left hand. He continued to say it must be ligament issues and advised I take off the brace as I needed to get movement back to help with the recovery. Then said for me to come back in a month if the pain persists. At this point I left the office with getting absolutely no answers from Dr. Dwyer but knew something wasnt right. I did listen to him and didnt wear the brace in the event it was just me thinking too much into it and maybe I did need to just work it out. But after the next month came I decided it was time for a second opinion. Dr Rowland at TSAOG came highly recommended by multiple people so I scheduled an appointment with him in December. He ran his own xray and looked at the CT scan and immediately called out the fracture. He insisted we get a MRI to get a better look at that was scheduled immediately. The MRI furthered his diagnoses, but given he was now starting to lean towards surgery he wanted me to get another CT scan as the MRI was looking through a few bones and he needed to have a better look before putting me under the knife. I pushed back on CT scan since Dr Dwyer said that came back false, and honestly it cost a lot of money for the first one. He insisted given the criticalness with the scaphoid bone being fragile and prone to dying given the lack of blood circulation. I scheduled another CT scan with TSAOG before leaving the office. Once I got home I called the Director of Baptist Imagining as they must of misinformed Dr. Dwyer and I had to call in my complaint. The Director took my request and reviewed the results from her Radiologist. She called me back and stated her Radiologist did state there was no fracture but did recommend a MRI to be performed as part of the report. She shared it with me and that concluded that Baptist Imagine wasn't at fault, as it was Dr Dwyer that misguided me and stated there was nothing wrong, must be ligament issues, and to take off my brace to help with recovery. I did perform my second CT scan, and the results came back positive and Dr, Rowland insisted I have surgery. Surgery was scheduled on 3/2/21(4 months after my first visit at Orthopedic Performance Institute) to perform a bone graft, and place a screw in my scaphoid to help keep the bone together. The thing amount the scaphoid is that it doesn't get good blood circulation so I am having to use a bone stimulator twice a day for the foreseeable future to keep the bone from dying out and causing further issues Two weeks after surgery I received a bill from Dr. Dwyers office for a balance of $124. Given all I covered above I called to ask if they can credit the $124 and the office manager, Terry, stated she would speak with Dr. Dwyer. Terry called me back today to let me know Dr Dwyer will not credit the $124 as he believes he handled my case correctly. It's not about the $124, but rather admitting you made a mistake and correct the situation with your patient. I wouldnt normally post a review so detailed but given all I went through with Dr Dwyer I felt it is warranted. read more

I am not sure where these other people went but my experience was less than stellar The doctor was fine but the staff was less than attentive and trying to get them to return a call is a miracle in itself. I am in pain and trying to schedule an MRI. Had called 3 times in 4 days with no return call until today in which I was told that is just the way it is and they were not going to take any extra measure to help expedite due to How busy she was and that I was not her only case. be aware, do not come to this location! my initial visit, my pcp referred me to Phelps and they had me see an assistant under Dwyer. refused to allow me to see Phelps my next appointment until I stated that dwyer was not my PCP referral. Inital visit was given a L boot and had to go back to get a S boot, they we reluctant but admitted it was their fault due to new hires not knowing. lastly, any oral restriction given was not legally documented in my doctor note I had a witness present in the room. they refuse to fix this, as the only person who saw me is out of the country. This man is an outstanding Orthopedic surgeon, and I have had several poor experiences with another large Orthopedic Group on Jones Maltzberger Road. Dr. Chris is a down to earth, expert surgeon, and great communicator. His staff is friendly and efficient. The office is very busy but a patient never has to wait very long. Several years ago I had a THR on my right hip at Stone Oak Methodist Hospital performed by Dr. Phelps and his amazing OR crew. Several of the OR nurses had procedures done by Dr. Chis and they were his biggest fans. I was discharged the next day and was walking within two weeks. This was a smooth process and I was fortunate to have no side effects as I become stronger every day. Last year my BW and I visited Dr. Phelps for knee pain. After several diagnostic tests, he had a non-surgical solution and she was making amazing progress for recovery. read more

Hurt my knee skiing. My primary care physician (PCP) sent me to get an MRI. Got the MRI. The results came in and my PCP referred me to here with Dr. Alexandra Matthews. I'm pretty sure we have great insurance, I get there and was told the office visit will be $245 which I paid with our FSA. The doc comes in with my MRI report. She goes over it and explains it all to me and shows me what's all damaged with a right knee analog model, then tells me that she does not do surgery and will be referring me to a surgeon. I'm thinking, great, how much will that office visit be? She also mentioned that I don't necessarily need to have surgery now, or at all, unless I want to. That's it. I paid $245 for a 15-20 minute office visit where she regurgitated my MRI report to me. I'm having a hard time understanding why this 15-20 minute conversation cost me $245. I'd love to see an itemized breakdown of what my $245 paid for. I feel like I got taken advantage of. Seems waaaaay too excessive for a 15-20 minute conversation. Maybe I should have called other orthopedic doctors and shopped around. Because of this, I am now super skeptical of doctors referring me to other doctors and making appoints for me on my behalf. read more

Doctor Matthew Dwyer has performed a shoulder replacement reversal and a knee replacement for me. I have had orthopedic surgery by two different surgeons in the past. Dr. Dwyer is the best overall. Not only good at his work, he explains everything, and answers all questions. He has his own surgery coordinator Alice who keeps on top of all of the paperwork needed. She has helped me in the past even if what I needed was not her job. She gets the job done. My wife and I will always go to Dr. Dwyer for our needs. Dr Phelps Is probably the most uncaring and unkind dr in San Antonio. He does a very high volume of joint replacements to the point he does not care about the patient. Hurt my knee in 2019 and visited Dr. Mathews for it. She took an X-ray and said the knee looked great and that she'd prefer to try treatment before doing an MRI. She noted the X-ray could not detect a torn ligament or meniscus. She suggested some type of ointment and sent me on my way. Two weeks of that and nothing. Another visit and another minimum of $100 just for the visit. She now, even at my behest to have an MRI, wanted to do injection therapy. Three visits - and yep, another $100/visit minimum. I said only if my insurance would cover. A day or so later I received a phone call from their office stating they'd contacted my insurance and it was covered. So, I go in for the injections. She goes out on maternity leave after the first injection. I return and have a nurse do the 2nd. So far, no relief at all but they say "it may take up to 30 days for it to begin to work". The injections were over three consecutive weeks. After three weeks of this and then waiting until January to see her (return from mat. leave), she NOW said let's do an MRI. I'm well north of $1000 out of pocket by now with at three months of more pain!!! MRI reveals -- drum roll - a torn meniscus. I now see her colleague Dr. Phelps and I pay quite a bit more out of pocket ($1,800+) due to my deductible and have the surgery. Success - kind of. Not a single phone call after the surgery, no paperwork on rehab. Nothing!! None, nada!!!!! Got a phone call three weeks later from the nurse wanting to do a virtual f/u. Whatever. Now, it's JULY and I get another $1,000+ bill from Orthopedic Performance Institute for the injection series that my insurance company REJECTED!!!!! What a scam. I'm seeking a legal remedy and have reported this to the Texas state medical examiners office for their review. At a minimum, this was horrible care. An MRI months ago would have saved me thousands but Dr. Mathews chose to delay - either because of poor medical choices or to ring up more charges so she can pay her medical school debt off - which she mentioned during a visit. Choose Dr. Phelps but avoid Dr. Mathews. read more

Dr Dwyer was amazing with my five year old with a broken leg. Kind, caring and took his time with both her and I to make sure we were leaving his office with all of our concerns and questions answered about her plan for care. So glad we chose to go here! read more
