Great place been coming here since I was probably 9 years old. Friday night I caught a movie Mountain of the moon. Pretty interesting with the dead music and all the art . This place is cool I watched them make fresh popcorn. They sell beer wine and sodas . One thing to know is they open the box office just before the movie starts . Parking can be tricky unless you come early an if possible it's always better to walk. They have a record store right inside plus some t shirts etc. On Saturday and Sunday mornings they have what they call popcorn palace which is a free movie mostly kids stuff . So happy this cute little movie theater is still holding its own. The Four Star often shows a well-curated rotation of indie and foreign films. This theater is probably never crowded. Not sure how it stays open. It's like a 1950 movie house that has not been remodeled. It feels very cramped. I like indie theaters, but this feels almost abandoned. Came here because it was one of the only places still playing a movie we missed when it was first run. If you want to support neighborhood theaters and avoid crowds and see good movies, this is a good neighborhood place and one of the few remaining San Francisco beaux arts cinemas left. If you are used to stellar sound systems, cup holders and huge screens full of rude people, go to the large cineplexes downtown. This place has the charm, the buttered popcorn lines floors and neighborhood feel without the huge prices or parking issues. 4star has a great concept of picking up movies a few weeks after released in the major theaters when the major theaters are starting to decide to drop them from rotation. I thoroughly enjoyed this theater. Unlike a Century or an AMC, this theater is much more compact but not in a bad way. Prior to walking in, my expectations weren't that high, but once I entered I was pleased with the how everything looked. The seats were not the most comfortable but they were good enough for me. I was expecting the screen to be smaller, but once I sat down I realized that the screen was a descent size for a small movie theater. If you ever wondered what SF movie theaters might have been like before the fancy mega multiplexes, Four Star can probably give you a pretty good idea. The place definitely shows its age - slight musty smell, old (and uncomfortable) high school auditorium seats, relatively small screen, dim lighting, and creaky floors. However, while there's certainly room for improvements, it's hard to blame them when you remember it's a small, neighborhood theater. And while it won't impress you with its (lack of) creature comforts, its quirks definitely give the place its character. They generally show a mix of Asian films along with a couple of current releases on their schedule (came here to watch True Grit the other night), and their ticket prices are pretty reasonable - only $9.00! Granted, for something visually intense like Avatar, you definitely wouldn't want to come here since they don't have the state of the art equipment you would need. But for a plot oriented movie, I would definitely consider coming here to save a few bucks. For that kind of movie, you really don't need to hear dialogue in THX dolby digital surround sound, do you? The theater was made up mostly of people on dates, and I could see why the place attracts a crowd like that. Four Star definitely has a more intimate sort of feel, and it doesn't draw the same types of crowds that the Metreon or AMC 1000 does. So find that right girl, snuggle in close, and enjoy! And the award for a remodeling least likely to have involved use of permits or architects goes to the Four Star. Seriously, the interior looks like it was designed by a kindergartner. It's chopped up randomly and walled off inelegantly to enable two theaters to inhabit the space that once was one. Still, you can't go hating on neighborhood theaters that are managing to beat the odds by staying in business. That'd just be wrong and the fact is, the Four Star is doing some things very right: * Admission tops out at $8.50 with cheaper rates for bargain shows, seniors, and kids. * Cups of tap water are provided free of charge for the asking. * After the movie was over and the line for the sole women's restroom grew, an employee directed people to another (employee?) restroom to reduce the wait. * They sell some pretty awesome logo sweatshirts and t-shirts. Don't let the lack of parking (pay lot is right next door, otherwise it's street parking) or the fact that you look upward to see the screen (in the bigger theater) stop you. The place is the opposite of fancy, but if you want to come as you are, sit in the dark, and enjoy a movie it'll do. read more

4 star theater is a tiny but legit cinema in the Richmond district. I came here from Bernal-Noe/ Mission in order to see 'Mary Shelley' starring Elle Fanning. Having studied English as my undergrad (Pre-Law), I was drawn to seeing it. This was the only movie theater in Nor Cal playing it so I had to see it! Pros: 1. Super friendly staff/ owners who are kind & welcoming. 2. Very clean facility. Their Rivals which Balboa, Vogue, & & Lee Marina aren't as clean as here as far as mom & pop theaters are concerned. 3. They take cash or card. 4. The seats aren't worn out nor raggedy like other places. These seats are even better than some at AMC 14 on Van Ness & O'Farell. 5. Only place to play such a literary movie. I was appalled when not even Alamo nor AMC Loews Metreon didn't pick up on 'Mary Shelley'. Many in SF love interesting & intellectual films that were inspired by topics of science, history, drama, fiction, & English literature. Cons: 1. Tiny screen in theater two. It's almost like a huge big flat screen tv. I must say I've seen projector screens bigger than this. 2. The noise from theater 1 & the outside street can be heard. I'm anal about my movies especially if I paid full price for a movie. 3. The woman wants all client s to leave immediately & this place closes early. Before midnight on a Saturday night! Even some theaters stay open past midnight cuz some films start at past 11pm. 4. Movie played as it it were coming outta a pc being projected onto the screen such as arrows & directions. Very amateurish for a movie addict like myself. Toss Ups: 1. No previews or ads. This is literally a curse or blessing because of one is running late it buys them time to arrive but if not, you literally miss the time of the movie you paid to see. 2. Location is iffy. Far away for some but a neighborhood theater nonetheless. 3. Staff checking on viewers to ensure safety but also making noise with the door. There is nothing good about this place. The screen is small and still square so you see big black bars above and below the movie. The sound leaks between their two screens. Their food choices are limited and pretty bad. The prices aren't even low. Seriously, it's better to pay full price for a movie on iTunes or Amazon and watch it on your laptop with headphones or your hdtv. I badly scrapped my foot and knee outside of the theater (paid to see a movie at the theatre). Asked for a band-aid since I was bleeding. They had none. It is ILLEGAL for them not to have a first aid kit. "OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, outlines the required contents of the first aid kit. A small business with three employees should maintain at least one to two of each item in the first aid kit. The business must increase the count for additional employees to ensure an ample supply. The additional count requirement is not listed in the general industry guidelines. However, an OSHA representative will provide the required count information as needed for each specific business." So they are definitely going to get reported to OSHA. Luckily my lyft driver had a first aid kit with anteseptic and banndaids. read more

I don't know how it's considered "nostalgic" ... NO old time movie theatres were ever divided up into small screens. That happened later for some reason. But the worst thing is the tiny screens. I am not claustrophobic. But they would have be PAY ME to watch a movie in these cramped little auditoriums with their tiny screens (which are literally the same size as my HDTV at home). It makes no sense why anyone would ever come here. This one was a disappointment. I generally love older theaters, and this seemed to be right up my alley. Unfortunately, the screening rooms are very narrow, with a tiny screen that's pretty far away from the seats. If you have a home projector system, well, it's probably just as good as what you get here. The seats were also small, squeaky, and uncomfortable, and there was a *lot* of sound that leaked in when the other screening ended and people were hanging out in the lobby. The film I saw ("The Florida Project") was great, and the theater deserves points for having it, but there were so many distractions that I sort of wish I had waited for DVD--or at least watched it somewhere else. This place should renovate itself, offering new seats, better insulation, and perhaps turning the two small theaters into one larger theater. I hate myself for shitting on this place, but I gotta prepare you for what to expect. This was one of two theaters in the city still showing Moonlight, which was released last October. It's pretty far out in Outer Richmond, but I had no other choice. Props for the online ticket purchase system, which was pretty straightforward. When we arrived at the ticket booth, I was ready with my confirmation number and credit card used. The attendant, not sure if just Asian or rude (my people sometimes appear to be yelling when really that's just how we talk), asked me what movie I was here for and handed me two tickets. Without ever verifying that I even purchased them?! How trusting of him. We walk inside, and there are only two theater rooms, both of which are long and narrow, with very little seating and a TINY screen far away. Weirdest set up I've ever seen. The chairs are small and squeaky, so it's quite disruptive whenever someone readjusts in their seat. This would all be negligible if not for the noise. The walls are so thin that if people are hanging out in the lobby, you can hear every word of their conversation. The movie playing in the next room was so loud and distracting. Moonlight happened to have several scenes of intentional silence, and I couldn't help but imagine if the movie next door had a sex scene that coincided with a poignant silence in the film, how that would completely ruin the flow of the movie. Other things to note- only one male and one female bathroom, so if you see someone leaving your room for the bathroom, you can probably just wait in your seat until they return. Also, there's a little cot set up right by the door, on which my friend saw the ticket attendant sleeping. A power nap during a work shift? I can totally relate. Local businesses do have their charm, but unfortch, Four Star was a one star experience for me. read more

The screen here is not much bigger than the one in my living room. My living room has comfortable seating, nice smelling candles, adorable kitties, blankets and pillows, cold beer, a heater, naked men with fans who hand feed me grapes, a trendy lamp, 99% fat free microwave popcorn and a remote control with the "pause" feature. This comes in handy for bathroom breaks. The 4 Star has none of these amenities. This is one of those little theaters that seems to survive regardless of the mega-complexes that theoretically should have driven them out of business. It operates on a shoestring, and the movies are terrific! There are two screens: the original one, and an "intimate" one chopped out of the right rear 1/4 of the audience seating. Both had double features last weekend, and apparently it is still customary to stay through the intermission and watch both features. There is one thing that must be made very clear about this theater: while screen #1 is a decent size for an indie place, screen #2 is the most microscopic theater I have ever been in. Lest you think I exaggerate, let me quantify it: 9 rows of 5 chairs each, minus two chairs for the side exit. Some of you probably have TVs bigger than the screen here. At least it's a fitting place to watch those uber-indie, low-budget quirkfests. As for Sweeney Todd, the most Burtonesque bit of gothic gore ever committed to celluloid...not so much. But at least the sound was good and the projector crisp. And you can't help but root for such a family-run establishment. Believe me, they've had to work hard to keep the place open; it almost became a church a couple years ago (but then they played Babel, and God saw that it was good). When we came, the dad was manning the box office while his teenage son dispersed the cokes and popcorn. Nice. Just make sure to leave time to park--the lot next door closes at 10:30, rendering it useless for 9:00 shows, and the Richmond on a friday night is....ugh. I parked at 28th & Geary, and considered myself fortunate. Definitely will have to come back for the Asian film fest, if I can ever figure out when it is. read more

Call me a cheapskate but I think paying $12.50 for a movie is ridiculous. Unless it's some 3D IMAX bullshit that would just otherwise be pointless to see in regular 2D. I also hate that the nostalgic idea behind going to the movie theatre has lost it's appeal to our generation. I love that the 4 Star Theatre is a locally-owned, VERY reasonably priced, low-key, chill, no frills theatre where you don't feel guilty after going. The guys who run it are super nice and always greet you with a smile. It's cash only which can be a bummer but - just remember to get money out of the ATM beforehand and you're fine. They play some foreign films and rotate fairly frequently but they also have some of the bigger blockbuster movies there too. I saw The Hangover 2 there on opening day during the early afternoon for the matinee price of $7.00! Tickets in the evening are $10 and popcorn/candy/snacks are CHEAP! It's so obnoxious to see people judge a place and write bad reviews based on the way the theatre looks. I don't think they understand how much money it probably takes to upkeep a facility, get the movies, run the projection, etc etc. It's two hours of your life - you can go without the fancy shmancy lounge-back chairs & cupholders. Okay, this is a tiny movie theater. I have been here for only 4 movies, but I plan to go for a few more. Four star is typical of a small movie theater. The movies are usually independent films/small releases. This type of theater is a dying breed as most theaters are bought out and commercialized by large conglomerates. In fact, many theaters in San Francisco have been assimilated and no longer have the independent feel. Four Star feels like you're watching a movie inside a small home theater. Their "large room" is very small, and their cozier rooms feel like a private karaoke room. I cannot pinpoint it, but I really like this place. Great local theater, 10 blocks away. Look, I ain't into the mega-giant suburban mega-plex stadium seating gigantic what ever movie theaters. If there was a part of the Olympics that for some otherworldly reason had movie theaters as entrants, you know all those freak-shows would be testing positive for steroids. Additionally, you now also know how they would get the steroids too - they overcharge and rip you off! Anyway, there's something to be said these days about watching a movie not-at-home, without distractions. Sure you can put on a movie on Netflix on the big HDTV screen at home, not worry about things like farting, wearing socks, pants, and the like. All the distractions are there - your phone's on the coffee table and people are texting you pictures of their food, or some other crazy shiznit, or your cats are doing cute things so you have to look and laugh and verbalize to them how cute they are even though they really actually do not understand you. Getting out into a movie theater is a break from all of that. Your cell phone is on silent and put away (unless you are a dooosh), there's no cats or computers around, the popcorn smell is awesome, and you're thinking "Oh! yes, I remember now" what it was like before you were being notified constantly about everything. 4-Star has great popcorn, and it's cheap! The candy too! No, it's not the best looking theaters inside - the second theater was clearly added on at some point to a one-theater facility. Who cares if the second smaller theater's screen is pretty small compared to Ben Johnson up there? IT DOESN'T MATTER. It's about the experience. The main theater's screen is exactly what you'd find in most other independent theaters, and the detail work on the walls hints at a heyday which has passed, but could come again! So - SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL THEATERS SF! We're like the only city out there that still has a big amount of places like this, so let's keep it going, yeah? Oh and seriously, I will never understand why some Yelpers complain about having difficulty finding parking for a business in the city, such as this movie theater. It's a local theater. Walk. If you're coming into town you should know what to expect for the parking situation. Unless it's you're very first time, which is entirely possible, but highly unlikely. So stop downgrading a business because of city parking issues that have nothing to do with the business, okay? And while the seating is old styled and the place is small, it's not an issue and creates a unique rustic feeling to your movie experience. The Four Star Theatre shows great indie films in the Richmond District. The place is really a 3-star movie theater. Generally the theaters are tiny, the chairs are old, the screen smaller than other theaters, and the ushers speak broken English (which I understand). But I am going to give this place 4 stars because of the great memories of the last Chinese action flick I saw here. The movie was House of Flying Daggers. It may not be the greatest action movie out there, but I loved its storyline and the way it was filmed. Probably the best part for me was the tribute at the end for Anita Mui, who I first saw in Rumble in the Bronx with Jackie Chan. I understand she was to be in the film, but passed away very young from cancer. She will always be one of my favorite actresses. 4 stars for the Four Star Theatre - just as the name implies. Please show a Hong Kong film once in a while. It could easily pass as indie for all of us! read more

Every market has its outlet and the Four Star Theatre serves the movie fan who wants to see something a ginormous cineplex won't make room for. You come here for good indie films and small-budget majors or sleeper hits that can't get space someplace with loads or fifty-foot screens showing a dozen different films. This theatre doesn't hold a special place in my heart or anything, but it's only fair it gets the review it deserves rather than those left by a couple of recent jackass reviewers who think they're king of the digital world and have better equipment at home. If that's right, STAY HOME. Nobody needs your snobby attitude. So, the screens here aren't 50' across? NEWSFLASH: the big screens at the metroplex are ONLY that big because the auditorium seats 700 people and the screen still needs to completely fill the farthest patrons' field of view to immerse them, plus the front row has to be a bus length back for anyone there to have a prayer of seeing the whole screen decently. In a 100-seat, small-screen theater, there's no such thing as "too close" so simply sit in the first 10 rows (still 15' back) because your field of vision will be filled completely even with a 20-foot screen. THAT panoramic "big screen" experience is the thing you can't get at home and it's still a better picture than your 50" mid-range TV; ditto the sound, probably. Now, Four Star is two bucks cheaper to get into than the big un's. Cool. They have a limited amount of snacks, whatever, they still have popcorn like everyone else. It's a two-person operation most of the time and they've always been nice to everyone who comes in. The seats are still comfortable and even though they're older they don't have springs popping out or anything; they're in good shape as far as all the few dozen I've used. Next time you want to see a good film that won't EVER show up at a place with a $20 ticket and a lounge chair to sit in, give the Four Star a shot. They've survived multiple recessions for a reason. read more

So let's get this out of the way up front. Everything about watching a movie here kind of sucks. As others have noted, the screens are tiny, the sound is iffy, the movie next door bleeds through. It's not a Cineplex Odeon kind of experience. On the other hand, nobody makes theaters like this any more, and I personally think it's easier to fall into a movie and forget where you are for 2 hours in a place like the 4-star. They show cool movies, They gave me a glass bottle of snapple and let me take it (and the burrito I brought with me) into the theater, and it was like watching a movie when I was a kid, with thick floor ot ceiling velvet drapes lining the walls and squeaky chairs and vaguely sticky floors. And to those who say the theater has made no concessions to modern film, I say No, Sir! They have cupholders. Would I go see something loaded with special effects here? No. But that's not typically what they show here, so it all works out. Go have a good time, and support your local movie house. read more

Wow, what a nice surprise it was to walk into this intimate theatre. First of all, I don't really like going to the movies.... friends, boyfriends, family all try to drag me and act like I've done something sacreligious when I don't jump up and down to the idea of going out to see a movie. I prefer my own couch, the pause button, my refrigerator within walking distance, and my dog snuggled under a comfy blanket over any uptight, upright sitting theatre arrangement with randoms coughing, chewing or slirping on their sodas as the background noise. Oh, and the idea of going to a crowded mall to see a movie makes me cringe. BUT..... once in a while, I find a random gem that makes me smile and this is one of them. It started as the La Bonita Theatre in 1919. I could just picture old Asian men and women smoking inside the red velvet theatre and watching old Kung Fu movies. When the latest James Bond movie opened, I thought there would be no way I could get in on opening day without a huge hassle. Then I saw that the 4 Star was showing it, along with my movie of the moment Argo, and I gave it a go...... Not only did I get in -- for $8, which is good enough -- but then I surprisingly had $4 left over for a small popcorn.... Here's the best part: the small popcorn wasn't actually small. I think I ate it all the way from the trailers to halfway through the movie. But then there's the popcorn seasoning. OMG! So delicious. I had the ranch, but now I feel I should have sampled all three flavors. This is the only theater I know of that offers popcorn seasoning. WOW! But I digress. This was a great experience, the workers are all friendly, and there's only one small downside: Bring cash. read more

They seem to show some pretty good movies here, but for whatever reason we hadn't gone there until tonight (after 3.5 years of living about 20 blocks away). Sure it's an older theater - sound and picture and screen and decor are what you'd expect for a place like this, I won't mark it down for that. What I will consider tonight - parking, cost, seats, what they show. Parking isn't as good as around the Balboa, where we usually go. So we just about missed the beginning of the movie - but it was street parking, so it didn't cost us anything. Movie cost more than the balboa ($17 for 2 people, as opposed to our punch card which would work out to $12 I think). And the seats are super uncomfortable, which was too bad. But I am giving it one extra star for the cup holders - pretty lame reason for a whole star, but surprisingly nice and uncommon in these lil theaters. read more

Saw Crazy Stupid Love here today (great move, i recommend it!) and I've always enjoyed my movie experiences at Four Star Theatre. The young dude decked out in Giants gear that was working there today was really friendly and I love the small theater size. Four Star Theatre is a great neighborhood theatre and I will come back whenever I can :) Also $7.50 for a matinee is definitely something i'm willing to shell out! just give yourself time to find parking depending on the time of day that you get there cuz at night, Clement can be tricky to find parking :) read more

Sorry, Yelpers. I simply can't give an establishment a 4 or 5 star review simply because it is locally owned and operated, much as I love to support small, independent businesses. One star has already been designated for that. Another star for the very friendly staff operating the place when I went here to see Killing Them Softly (a negative experience in and of itself for another review). When I first walked into the theater I was a bit shocked. There are probably about 50-60 seats per theater. Quarters are extremely tight. Also, it seems like the people who come to this theater love to talk and give commentary during the movie. I'm sorry, but I don't care if you think Brad Pitt is a "good shot" or that one of the leads has a "cool car". We are here to watch a movie for 90 minutes and save our comments and thoughts for when the lights go up. Next up, we have the silver screen itself, which is about 1/3 the size of your standard movie screen. Seriously? Also, there was this really irritating Chinese pop music playing through the coming attractions and it went all the way to the opening credits of the feature presentation! A fellow movie-goer had to actually get up and tell the staff that the awful music was threatening to ruin our movie experience altogether. In all, this place just simply isn't worth the $10 you have to spend on a ticket. If the price were $4.00 this place might have gotten a 4 star review from me read more

Don't buy tickets in advance as you may not find a parking spot... we drove for blocks around for 15 minutes. Residential area with all parking taken up after dark. $ gone for nothing. read more

The Funk/Soul Theatre. Is it a moldy place with tiny screens? Indeed. Also utterly charming, totally cool and cuturally indispensible. Time was there were downtown theatres. Places where you could see genre movies that go straight to DVD now and 2nd run movies. Your feet grafted to the floor and fights often broke out between shows. I really miss those places. And there were mall theaters too, just outside SF County lines. Missed as well. Now we have a handful of places like the Four Star, but not so many that we can afford to lose one, as we almost did recently. There'd have been a church here instead. And with me a sinner who lives across town? Give me a grubby old movie theater with creaky seats every time. The site of many Hong Kong action movies, John Waters flicks I didn't catch when they were downtown, and most memorably, the original site of Jesse Ficks's Midnight For Maniacs triple feature nights. You'd pile in at Midnight, getting free cookies if you came in PJs or with a teddy bear. I still remember the pure bliss of first Revenge Of The Cheerleaders (starring a stoned and breakdancing David Hasselhoff as "Boner", I shit you not), then a raffle where I won a Betamax copy of the feature attraction, Pinball Summer, followed by milk and cereal for all who remained, then the remarkable Joysticks. Joe Don Baker and Uncle Rico Dynamite (in punk drag) unite to shut down the local video arcade. And wind up touching my heart. So go to the Four Star. Then, message me about firing up the Betamax. Update! Frank Lee saw Bullitt at the Four Star when he was a kid. Now he and his wife Lida, who have operated the theatre since 1992 own the place. It's a San Francisco miracle, kind of! My sister screened her movie here a few years ago and I love it! The charm is enough to get me coming back again and again. Not to mention the wonderful Asian dessert places here that open until late at night for snacking after your movie! The place is well-run, independent, and the owners are just so accommodating and cute. However, do not expect this to be anywhere near the caliber of large chain cineplexes. read more
