This is one of the oldest theatres left in San F rancisco . It's really beautiful inside it is a single screen and we are truly lucky to have it . They do a few festivals the Strickly British for one .Themed movies for different months of the year many art films and foreign. Came here to bring in NYE. It was a very special surprise for my wife because they were showing Purple Rain and Signs of The Times this night. We throughly enjoyed ourselves. Places that have been part of our community for generations. I come here once or twice a month, grab a popcorn, and enjoy movies that I almost never got to see on the big screen, it's such a treat! On the anniversary of Prince's death, they showed Purple Rain and I LOVED that! The service is always friendly, you can easily buy your tickets online or in person, they have a small but appropriate selection of snacks and drinks, and the theater itself is always clean and maintained. Their movie selections are so random, you can always find something you'll enjoy! Obviously, not a vast selection of movie times but perfect for a small theater like this, so if you walk by, you can always check what they have going on like a month out. LOVE YOU VOGUE!! read more

The Vogue is one of the three local independent theaters operated by Cinema SF, along with the Balboa and 4 Star. I love going to the a Balboa and wanted to check out the Vogue as well. I watched Amelie with a friend on a weekday evening. I didn't buy tickets before, but luckily it wasn't too crowded and I was able to get a ticket there for $15. I also got their popcorn which is always delicious. There is only one theater in the building, and it has pretty nice seating. The only annoying part was that the seats aren't on much of an incline, so the person's head in front of me was blocking my view of the subtitles the whole time. Other than that, I had a great time and especially love the dramatic lighting in front of the theater! read more

Rogues At The Vogue - One Night Only. If you missed it you missed the party of the year. Well, maybe not the party of the year - but since it was my party, I'd like to think it was. With the closing of the Bridge Theater, the Vogue Theatre (not "theater") has become our new favorite single screen in SF. So much so that when we wanted to put on a party incorporating music and movies, the Vogue was the only choice for us. They were so helpful in helping us set up and work out the details - even letting me come in to test my DCP files on their digital camera setup. And when I had problems with that, their suggestions are what got things over the hump to completion. I'm a big fan of single screen neighborhood theaters. We are still upset that the Bridge Theater has closed. We have found a new home at the Vogue. In addition to the first run movies that they show, the Vogue also hosts several movie festivals and special events throughout the year. Our favorite is the Mostly British Film Festival. Another aspect of the single screen theaters is that many of them can support other activities. The State in Modesto and the Arena Theater in Point Arena are good examples of movie theaters getting a new life as a mixed mode venue. They support both movies and concerts as well as other events. So part of the reasoning for our special event was to show people in the area that the Vogue can be used for this. With over 100 people in attendance (including a few Yelpers) and several more persons walking in off the street, I think we did just that. The Vogue is run by the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation and the do a very fine job. The SFNTF also manages the Balboa and holds Movies in the Park throughout SF during the summer months. They have a good projection system including Digital Projector with surround sound. A prior reviewer said they don;t have this and I can say with certainty that they do since I created a DCP movie with Dolby 5.1 sound and it took advantage of all the channels. Another big plus is that the popcorn is always fresh and lightly salted (some places are way too salty). There are a few negatives about the Vogue which I must point out. The movie sightlines are not the greatest - the floor is not as sloped as it should be (like stadium seating) so when it is crowded you may have to see around someones head. Also, the food choices are limited (no hotdogs, etc here). But I like that since I always see food wrappers and such at other theaters and have on occasion stepped in a pool of ketchup because someone dropped a packet from their hotdog. In summary, The Vogue Theatre is a gem in the neighborhood that needs to be preserved and frequented. And now that I have an annual pass, I may see you there. read more

Adam has no customer service skills and the Vogue deserves to go out of business. I purchased tickets online for Amelie on June 1st and received a vague email confirmation but no instructions on how to use the confirmation as a ticket. What do I do in this case? Email the business. What do I get? Nothing. So I email them again.... and again.... and again..... Nothing. Finally; I email their sister location, the Balboa....and I get a response right away? They said they forward my email to Adam at the Vogue. I hear nothing. I email again. Nothing. After a month of hearing absolutely nothing from Adam, I decide (like any sane person) to reverse the charges on my credit card as I don't really know how to use my ticket. I email one more time letting them know that I am cancelling. I actually hear something! "That reference number IS your ticket. Welcome to 2023." After a month of no contact, Adam gives no apology and responds with an agist insult. Adam is an asshole and the Vogue deserves to be shut down. I will continue to support the Balboa as they do better customer service for the Vogue than the Vogue itself does but can't wait to see Adam crying on the news when the Vogue eventually shuts down. No Adam, you lazy trust-funded hipster d%ckweek; the Vogue isn't going out of business because SF is loosing it's culture; it's because you suck at business and are actively driving away your customers. read more

Really romantic and charming little theater. It is the second oldest operating cinema in San Francisco, which means it's only got one screen and one snack option (popcorn!). The single screen has a vintage feel to it, and the seats are very old school, so they are not elevated. This can get quite annoying if someone sits in front of you, because they will block your direct view of the screen. But the experience of being in such an old theater made this tolerable for me. If you don't mind switching seats, this won't be a problem (it was not crowded at all when we went). I noticed the air conditioning noise in the background, but it did not at all muffle the audio; in fact, I heard everything with clarity despite having one ear plugged from being slightly congested. They don't check backpacks, so you can definitely bring your own food. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or purchased right before the movie at the box office. Trailers/advertisements only last 4 minutes before they go right into the movie. Highly recommended as a date night idea, but keep in mind there is pretty much nothing else to do in the surrounding blocks. read more

UPDATE: I went there last night after work to try to get a refund and I never got one. After I told the guy working there that I called several times on Monday and left messages, he said that he was there all day (yet he didn't answer the phone). I told him that the phone rang twice and went to voicemail each time and that no one ever called me back. I also told him that I emailed Adam and he told me that Adam was out of the country. When I explained what happened to the guy, he explained that the system was new and he then called another manager at the Balboa Theater who walked him through how to do a refund. When he swiped my card, he said that he couldn't issue me a refund because it was the day after I bought the tickets and that they were out of passes. Also, there is no refund policy information on their website. My friend who was going to see the movie with me also called the theater and left a message explaining what happened and she told me that she also never got a call back. The way this theater doesn't handle refunds is appalling. How is anyone supposed to know that they have to come the day the tickets are good for to get a refund if there is no information on the website. My friend and I are going there tomorrow to try again to get my money back. read more

We've been going to the Vogue for decades. It's always been one our favorite theaters in town not only because do what they play, but because the staff has always been so warm, friendly and helpful. We've always recommended this house to others as well because having been in this business ourselves we know that staffing makes a big difference. So, last week when we arrived early for a show the front doors were locked but two staff we're hanging out in the lobby. We tried to asks question about tickets and for some reason one of the staff (the fellow with a mustache) became incensed. He started yelling and cursing us in language that we don't hear very often. My partner fled the torrent of profanity and I just gave up. Vogue theater: you hired a rogue. Shame on you! read more

Sure it's a bit of an antique, but if you happen to live in the vicinity it's quite the fun neighborhood accessory. I wish I could say I leveraged this local resource more frequently, but on the occasions that I have, I've always come away glad they're there. I'm guessing it's not really an economic pursuit for the owner, but rather the passion of a well-heeled local... either way I'm glad they've stuck around since it makes for a relaxing night out in the 'hood. read more

The Vogue Theatre is one of San Francisco's oldest operating cinemas, but succeeds at staying afloat by being open to unique cinematical events and festivals. As a single screen theater - it is bursting with character and charm. I recently watching a beautiful collaboration between Vetiver and the showing of the classic San Francisco based movie Foul Play. The theater is intimate and the sound was fantastic for Vetiver's well executed set. I also delighted in the inclined seating which allowed everybody a clear view of the screen and stage, and I enjoyed that the space didn't have a cold sterile feel about it, as I've found in some of the bigger movie theaters. The whole night was fantastic and I'm excited for more creative events to be hosted here. I highly suggest you bookmark this great theater for a visit. Let's keep our beautiful independent theaters alive and not let them slowly fade away - like our lovely Red Vic. Trust. read more

The Vogue opened in 1912 as the Elite and changed its name to the Vogue in 1939. I really like vintage neon signs, and the Vogue sign and marquee are beautiful. The group that saved this theater from being razed for condos has done a great job preserving this neighborhood treasure. The interior isn't fancy, the charm comes from the feel of what a night at the movies was--before multi screen theaters opened in malls. S and I went for a private showing of "Janus, Little Blue;" S was interviewed for the movie. I'm not sure what sound system the theater uses, but the music, and there was a lot of it, sounded great. None of the music was recorded recently, that might make a difference. We did not get anything from the snack bar although it was tempting. The bathroom is small and clean. If I come back I will not be drinking a lot of soda. The seating is not stadium style, the floor is almost flat and the seats are not staggered. I suppose this could be a problem if a really tall person was seating in from of me. The screen is raised so wasn't a problem for me at this show but it might be at others. I would definably want to sit towards the back so I wasn't looking up all night. I felt cross-eyed at the end of the movie. Looking at their calendar I could see that the Vogue is a neighborhood asset. They had live music, lectures, foreign films 1st run movies, classic movies and film festivals. read more

Came here to see The Witch with my Lady and we had the best time! Great old school SF theatre with the lighting and walls. Parking was pretty easy, we got a space right across the street. Staff was nice, place was well kept up with clean bathrooms. It was one of the first cold nights this year and they had it heated comfortably. We ate dinner beforehand so we didn't hit the snackbar. I was the 3rd wheel with my sis and bro.in.law's date night ~ literally. It's my first time being in this theatre and I didn't even know that this existed. We saw "DATE NIGHT" -- (ironic eh?) -- the movie was funny! HILARIOUS. I highly recommend seeing it. I was laughing the whole time. Oh right, reviewing the venue... I'm a fan! Very old-school theatre but it was clean! Friendly folks as their patrons and it wasn't packed. No loud high-school kids or any of the usual inconsiderate folks that we all like while watching a flick at big cinemas. Would love to give San Francisco's second oldest theatre (as told by the front staff) more stars but there was an incessant sound by the air conditioner at the front of the screen. I saw a movie that was described by The Times as "quiet as a sigh" but that was not realized with the trickle of water emanating from the A/C. I understand that the theatre is old but if it is to survive, it needs to ensure that the viewing pleasure is as good as any standard AMC theatre. A plus is that you can see the movie comfortably in the front seats. It provides for a much more immersive experience without the neck strain. However, a seat in the middle of the theatre would probably equate to watching a movie in your living room flat screen; the screen is too small for the size of the auditorium. If you're using MoviePass, you have to buy the ticket 30 minutes early and not any earlier. That was a bit of inconvenience. Staff is super friendly though. read more

Went to this theater with my mom to see the movie about Aretha Franklin. What I liked about this theater is that the theater was clean and the bathrooms were cleaner then the bathrooms at AMC and Century theater. This theater is kind of nice. Also the popcorn was great. What I didn't like about this theater is that The ticket person couldn't scan the mobile tickets I had on my phone. Also I didn't like that this theater doesn't have hotdogs at the snack bar. read more

I actually had no idea this theater even existed until about 2 weeks ago, but I'm glad I had a chance to stumble upon it. Laurel Heights has a lot of quaint little storefronts that mirror something you'd find in a small town, and the identity of Vogue's single-screen theater fits perfectly in this neighborhood. It's a little quirky, it's cozy, and it's totally friendly. Apparently, Vogue Theatre was going to shut down two years ago, but a wealthy middle-aged man acquired the building to keep it in business. The reason I know is before the start of the movie I caught last night (Up In The Air), he made a quick announcement at the front of the room to share the brief story and thank us all for the patronage. Being that it's no more than a 15 minute walk from my house, I'm more than happy to support an indie theater like this one, granted the one movie they have in-house is something I'm interested in. You can purchase tickets in advance online for $10 a pop, which is pretty standard across the board at movie theaters in SF, but if you choose to wait and buy your tickets in person, it doesn't seem like it's too much of a hassle at all. read more

Came to Vogue Theatre for the 1st time to see WORLD'S END & we thought this was an A-OK venue Reminded me of the multi-screen Lumiere or Opera Plaza & much more like single-screen Clay Theatre type setup. Vogue has a nice, well-used interior w/ a small concession stand that leads to a single-screen theater Seats are on a very slight slant - this is no modern stadium seating setup - comfy & rock back which was nice as we've encountered our share of not-so-well-kept seats. But if someone is sitting in front of you, views will be blocked. Patrons were pretty cognizant to recognize this & not sit directly in front of others & for those few who did, there were enough seats for people to move locations We thought the sound was nice & loud...drowned out potential talkers but didn't require earplugs. Given this movie just came out in theaters, we were happily surprised to have a quiet, nicely spread out crowd & vintage venue in which to enjoy our movie.......& it was hysterical! An oldie but a goodie! The Vogue Theater is one of the last of the dying breed - a single-theater movie house. Call me old-fashioned, but I'll gladly take one of these neighborhood theaters any day over a shopping mall multiplex. This is truly a movie theater for adults that's run by adult. Seeing a film at the Vogue is a classy, stress-free experience. People here are always on their best behavior. There's never a ridiculous line or a group of rowdy kids. If you want to buy a ticket, there's a box office with an actual human being to take your money (and not some computerized machine). The floors and seats are always clean. There isn't an hour of pre-show commercials and trailers. People don't talk during the movie (to each other or on their cell phones). Truth be told, the Vogue doesn't boast the latest and greatest sound system. These guys still haven't completely embraced the THX-audio/digital/IMAX world. So if you're looking to see a big Sci-Fi or superhero blockbuster, this probably isn't the theater for you. But if you're in the mood to catch a Woody Allen or Oscar bait flick, the Vogue certainly fits the bill. Best of all, the theater is located in a charming intersection of Sacramento @ Presidio (Pac Heights in all its romantic glory). There are plenty of dining options nearby for before and after the show, including: Garibaldi's, Spruce, the SF Jewish Community Center, etc. And if you're looking to chat about the movie over a fireside cocktail, Swank is just right across the street. Hard to beat that! The Vogue is certainly a cornerstone of the Pacific Heights community, and I hope it continues to thrive as such for years to come. read more

A classic neighborhood theater. It's still intact, not chopped up like the ones in West Portal or the Marina. The sound system isn't the best, although I see two of the "founders" are named Dolby. Ahem. There is very little space in the lobby, and the main snack is popcorn. I have seen some awesome movies here. Like today, it was "Inception." No 3-D or IMAX experience, just the classic movie theater. If you want a bigger screen, sit closer to it. A big plus relative to other neighborhood theaters is they have a sloped floor, so you get a clear view of the screen every time. Another is the nice etched glass art deco logo of Diana they have all over. Quite the elegant touch. read more

But believe me, you really won't need anything else if you are feeling hungover or just unmotivated in general. The Vogue is the only one screen theater left in this city. There's always a new movie playing here so it's just a matter of deciding if it's something I want to see. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the other close by Kabuki Theater. However, it has that old theater charm that any movie fiend can appreciate. You aren't gonna find any of that fancy stadium seating here so be sure to find a seat behind someone significantly shorter than you. Luckily, the last time I was there we were seeing WALL-E so there were lots of short peeps there aka kids. Also, the ticket prices here are more reasonable than some of the other theaters in town such as $10 for a Friday or Saturday night show. So for one of those nights where you can't seem to drag yourself to a drinking establishment...check out the Vogue for some good ol' fashioned movie fun. read more

An A for effort....well, B+ perhaps. Yes, finishing the remodel outside would help, as would providing better sound baffling in the auditorium so that the dialogue is less muuhuhmhuuhmhhmmy. And OK, Cherry Coke, Toblerone, lattes, fine, perhaps some beluga caviar or pipe tobacco. But you have to admit that there is something stiff-upper-lip about the staff there, the sad-eyed young men who put on a brave smile as the 7:00 show rolls to an audience of four people. Because the inescapable reality is that movie theaters are the sealing wax of modern media, the 21st-century buggy whip. Fast-vanishing single-screeners like the Vogue are just the young and weak of the herd -- the first to be eaten. But they're all mastodons, ground sloths, dodos. Even the multiplexes. We've already got home theater systems so you can replicate the movie-house experience -- with better, cleaner seats. And you can download movies. When Hollywood starts going the straight-to-download route the fat lady will have sung, the credits will have rolled and cinemas will be left to the home-theater-less, the Katrina victims of the world. I don't think it's going very far out on a limb to say that the movie theaters of tomorrow will be like the adult theaters of today -- few and far between, moth-eaten, noisome establishments showing slasher films in semi-abandoned areas of town peopled with derelicts, their floors littered with things that stick to the bottom of your shoes. read more

I want so badly to support the little guy, even if they're really a "big guy" (http://www.uatc.com/) in disguise. I used to look forward to going to this theater because they tend to run really good movies that are a little outside of the main stream and this is where my husband and I started our first date (it ended at SFO, but that's another story). Unfortunately, things have really taken a turn for the worse in recent years with the UA Vogue. Here are the problems, as I see them: A) Dilapidated exterior - how long, exactly, are they going to keep the marquee aloft with scaffolding? At first I thought it was charming when the marquee was sliding... It sort of contributed to that "little train that could" oompah of the theater, but, seriously... it's been over a year now. At this point, it's just gives me the same sad creepy feeling I get when I drive past some rural house with 6 broken-down cars melting into the lawn. B) Movie rotation is too slow. C) If you show up early, you're "treated" to a forced viewing of ads about TV shows and movies you have no interest in seeing... I was nauseated that I had to sit through "the making of United 93." It made me feel a bit like Alex de Large (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066921/). D) Popcorn - negative two stars on that. Half the reason I go to the movies is for the popcorn. I make slammin' popcorn at home out of the pot, but movie popcorn is just a different animal. I will suffer through a Martin Lawrence Big Momma vehicle if the popcorn is good enough. Unfortunately, sometime in the past year, they started using a different oil, or just a lot more of it, to pop the corn and it leaves this funky, nasty aftertaste. I'm a "heavy on the fake butter" kinda girl, and even my "load it up halfway through AND on top and make it sassy" proclivities can't hide this funky flavah. If the UA Vogue would fix any one of these things, I'd go more often. Especially if they fixed the popcorn!!! Now, as it is, when there's a movie playing there that I want to see, I have to ask myself, "Self... is this movie going to be good enough to eat cruddy popcorn at?" and the answer, so far, is "No." I haven't been in easily 7 months because of the popcorn. read more

I just spent the last 2 hours watching the back of some dude's head. Yup.. the seats are not stadium seating..or staggered. This meant that I sat behind Kareem Abdul-Jabber starting at his bald head rather than watching Angelina Jolie dance around the screen. Don't get me wrong... I know there was a sex scene in the movie as I could hear the screaming and moaning... but I didn't see any of it. This place can fun as it's in the middle of the city. It's owned by Regal so you're donating the $10.25 ticket to "the man" but that doesn't take away from the one screen theater ambiance. The audio sounded average and the decor seemed decent. But here's the rub.. The parking can get rough. The screen is tiny and since the theater actually narrows on the screen end it gives it the illusion that you're sitting in the cheap seats no matter where you sit. read more

I have been on a hunt lately. A hunt for community-specific spots void of hype and crowds. I found what I was looking for passing by the Vogue Theatre. This is a one-screen theatre showing good films. I saw "State of Play." I was pleasantly surprised at the friendliness, politeness, and decency of the staff (as opposed to the AMC staff, if you know what I mean). Popcorn here tasted better, Cranberry Juice was not artificially sweet, Matinee lasted until 5 p.m., in other words, everything was perfect. The crowd is a neighborhood crowd: middle-aged women and men in Chico's and Brooks Brothers. I am not in that category yet, so I probably stood out as an outsider. I haven't been here in well over a decade, and in fact had assumed that it was no longer open (or worse, chopped into thirds). But no, there it was, in all its uniplex grandeur, looking much as I remembered it. The seats had been replaced with wide-bodied cupholder-equipped American-size seats (ugh), the sound system had been updated, and the projection system now supports digital 3D (the polarized kind provided by Dolby). It was a great experience, but you should be aware of two things: 1. This is an old building, built on a flat, level slab. Unlike today's modern stadium-style seating, there's only a very slight change in elevation from one row to the next. Even in the back of the theater, you're still not looking down at the screen. The original theater design engineers compensated for that by placing the screen higher up, which provided acceptable sightlines for most seats, although as a result nearly everyone had to look up at the screen. But read on ... 2. The seats are NOT staggered! That surprised me. Instead, each seat was located directly in front of the next, as if you were sitting in something manufactured by Boeing. That fact, combined with the nearly flat floor, guarantees that your view of the screen will be significantly blocked by the troglodyte sitting directly in directly in front of you. Fortunately for us (and unfortunately for the Vogue), there were fewer than 40 people attending this showing, and nearly everyone was polite and made an effort to avoid sitting directly in front of anyone else. Oh, and they happily served us some of the stalest popcorn I've ever had. I'll be generous and suggest that it was made before the beginning of the previous showing, If you attend an earlier and more popular showing, I'm sure the popcorn will be much fresher, but then you may not be able to see the screen very well.
