I enjoyed the very friendly service by multiple workers and free netting, twine, hot chocolate available (hot chocolate free on weekends with hot apple cider). They had over 4 picnic benches for families to picnic on, a small swing nearby, and a portable toilet near the main parking lot. Other parking lots were available if the main lot was full. They give you the saw upon check-in and you drop it off along with $80 for any tree size on your way out. My son enjoyed the candy cane he was given upon exit. I would go here again with my family. Advice: we went here upon opening Saturday morning after Thanksgiving. By 10:30am, the main parking lot was full and overflowing into other lots, but other lots had plenty of space. Been coming here for the last few years. There are so many up here that we usually pick anyone lol the owner is very friendly and they just leave you to do your thing. Once you enter you grab a saw and then can wonder around anywhere on the property. They have a variety of different trees and all are so lush and green. ANY tree is $80! So such a steal if you can fit a big one in your house. So I would say a great value! When you leave you can drop the cash in the slot or use a pay app. Either way super quick! Our first year trying this place out and we were thrilled with our experience. We've gone to the same place (a popular competitor in Los Gatos) the last few years and each time it was always busy and the tree selection was fine (makes it fun to find the one when most trees aren't up to standards), but there's never any hot coca or cider like when I was growing up. Well Four Winds offered both, complimentary, and the place was not crowded at all. And every tree was pretty perfect - we were in and out so quick! This year, my boyfriend and I wanted to get a real tree. Be careful driving here because it is up a mountain and the road gets narrow and windy. Parts of the mountain are too narrow, where only one car would fit. Four Winds Ranch takes cash/ or check payments only. All trees were $70! Any size!! Also, the netting is free. Once you get to the ranch, someone will give you a saw and direct you where to go to park and how to cut down the tree. Once you park, you are free to roam around and look for the perfect tree! Once you cut down the tree, in the parking lot, there is a netting area. There is also a snack shack because it does take some time looking for that perfect tree. Great experience getting our tree today, very few Christmas tree locations that let you cut your own tree are open because of Covid so this is a gem! Couple of tips for those who have never been here: -Come early or late, trees are in high demand this year and anywhere open is warning people how crazy it's getting. -The road going up and down is very narrow, steep, with hairpin corners. Go up and down slowly and move over if you have room for others in the opposite lane. We drove our older 2003 4-cylinder today that is manual transmission and in a couple area had to go in 1st gear and was pretty crazy going up. -Trees are CASH only, don't come all the way up without the $65. Tamales are cash only and we didn't have enough to try them, they were 6 for $14. -There are two porta-potties on site near the parking lot. -You CAN bring your own chainsaw to make cutting easier and I also recommend a knife or scissors, the netting machine is on the right side of the parking lot and free and the knife or scissors will help with cutting the net. -If the tree iis going on your vehicle roof, load it with the base facing forward or the branches might snap off as you are driving on the freeway. If you are using ropes or straps to secure the tree go through your vehicle doors and not the windows. read more

There was a sign that it was self service (due to rain), which was a little disappointing, but there were good instructions for netting the tree and location of saws and twine. There was hot cider. We went here about a week ago to cut down a Christmas tree with our kids and friends. It was so much fun. There were many trees and the kids love going around hunting for the perfect tree. The staff are nice and helpful. Price was great. This year, I decided to get a real Christmas tree and wanted to have the experience to going to a tree farm and picking out my own. After some light research, I ended up choosing to go to Four Winds. They opened up the day after Thanksgiving, though I visited that Saturday. The road up gets narrow, has some hairpin turns, and gets a bit windy - so be wary! Everyone driving up and down was friendly about making space though. Be sure to follow the signs up to Four Winds as there are other tree farms along the way. Once we arrived, someone greeted us and asked if we needed a saw. He also explained to us where to go and what to do, as it was our first time there. We drove up and parked, and there are several lots and spaces to park in. The ranch is huge! I definitely could've spend all day here trying to find the perfect tree. Luckily after browsing different areas, we found the tree for my space! There is a netting station for the trees, and someone was able to give us directions for that. At the main lot, there are snacks and drinks available to purchase, along with free hot chocolate and cider! Wreaths are available to purchase here too. There are also benches to sit, and we saw lots of people bring their own drinks and food to enjoy there. On the way down, where we met those who greeted us, we paid for our tree - cash or check, $70 any size. There was mistletoe available to purchase here. There was also someone selling tamales, salsa, and rice! There were chicken and pork tamales sold by half/full dozen, along with multiple sizes of the salsa and rice. We paid cash and made our way down! It was essentially a drive-through pay area, so it was super convenient. Really loved the experience here! I was glad to be able to bring my dog, as she loved roaming around. We had fun choosing and chopping our own tree. Our annual tradition for the last 20 years has been to drive up to the Santa Cruz mountains and cut down our tree. Unfortunately, our annual tree farm suffered significant damage from the fires. Looked on Yelp and found this gem. It was an hour drive from where we were, but it was worth it. Friendly staff. Covid cautious. $65 for any size tree. Any tree for $65 (small or big ) when you first arrive you are greeted by their employees, they hand you a sanitized saw, no Christmas Vacation scenario here (lol) and off you go to hunt for your tree. Great place it was our first time a here. I came here with my family, my sisters fiance, my dog and we all had a great time cutting down our tree! The trees are not sectioned off by categories - instead they are all mixed together. We walked around the property before we found the tree we wanted, you can spend all day here. I'm sorry my original review (that I wrote in anticipation of this year's visit) is for some reason showing up twice (my account only shows 1 review so there is no duplicate to delete) but since I should have been giving Four Winds 5 star reviews every year we have come, I am still many 5 star reviews behind! Once again this year we came home with 3 beautiful trees (2 households), each one a different variety (I think we got a Silver Tip, a White Fir, and a Douglas Fir, all wonderful). We spent a fun morning on top of Four Winds' spectacular mountain. I think I forgot to mention they supply the saws and netting (thank goodness, otherwise there is no way we could get 3 full, 8 to 10 foot trees on 1 SUV), and twine (with scissors). You pay by cash or check. I forgot to mention the free hot drinks and candy canes and the tamales for sale on weekends and the mistletoe and wreaths for sale. Dress in layers, as even a chilly morning warms up. And HAVE FUN! read more

I pretty much though all tree farms were the same. But after today I can say that this is our annual stop. There is a HUGE area to roam in with a variety of trees, and lots of parking in different areas so even though it's very popular it doesn't feel crowded. Choosing was so hard since we saw so many trees many we liked. We sawed our tree - TIMBER! - and hauled it to the main area to have it netted for free. We brought bungees but they had free twine which is nice. Families were picnicking at the many tables and enjoy goodies and tamales. Great holiday feel. Already I was impressed with Four Winds. But when it came time to pay - whoops! We had no cash and they don't take credit cards. We thought we'd have to unload the tree and drive into town to find an ATM. Nope! They handed us a business card and told us to mail a check. Unbelievable to find business people who value and trust their customers! The check is now sent, and I know where we'll be getting our tree next year and for years to come. The difference isn't the trees or the cider or even the tamales. Fifty dollars for a tree as tall as you want?! WOW. I thought this Christmas tree farm was too good to be true, but it isn't. This place is super. You get to roam the farm grounds looking high and low for the right tree, and you can really feel like you're a lumberjack in the wild woods with a hand saw in hand, ready to chop down a really big tree. Kids LOVE this place. Every kid I saw today was excited and happy to be treehunting. We didn't roam too far before finding a vibrant-colored Douglas Fir. And I loved how the different species of tree were all mixed together -- it made searching more interesting. The process was very easy, and checking out at the pay station exit was easy -- $50. Sure, Four Winds is higher up on Skyline than the other tree farms close to Highway 17 (we must have passed five or six farms on the way up), but the views from on high were *spectacular*, the trees and forest smelled fabulous, and the sky was beautiful. It's worth the wind up Gist to get to this farm! And it's worth the climb to pick your own tree on the mountaintop and cut it down for taking home. (I am sensitive to motion sickness but did not get it on the way up or down.) The day after Thanksgiving was moderately busy, I would say. There's no fee for parking. When we got there, the small lot was full, so we grabbed whatever spot was open. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Free drinks, too, although we did not partake in any. This is a great place to purchase a beautiful Christmas tree. You can chop any tree and any size for $60! The owners offer free hot chocolate and free apple cider by the netting station. There is plenty of trees here. You basically have to walk around, hiking up and down to find the perfect tree. I recommend people to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. It's great that the owners offer you a hand saw at the entrance. I noticed some people brought their own chainsaw, too. It would be nice if there was another price for small trees less than 3 feet tall. I saw so many cute baby trees, but I didn't feel like it was worth $60. This place is definitely worth it if you are getting a big tree. I saw lots of families enjoying their time here. Lots of people actually made it into a picnic setting in the parking lot. Very friendly, down-home, cut-yer-own Christmas tree farm. From the extensive research I've done, they also seem to have the best prices, too: $40 for any size tree, which is a bargain! They sell snacks to fuel your hunt, and I love that the trees aren't planted in any organized fashion. You can really pretend you're a mountain man (or woman) in the forest, searching for the perfect holiday mascot to take home. And the grounds are pretty large; we've never come across a boundary that we know of in all of our traipsing from year to year. OK, I had no idea what to expect when we began our journey to cut down our own Christmas tree. I didn't realize that I'd be tromping up and down, all around on some pretty uneven terrain on the hunt for the most perfect tree. I had imagined trees would be kind of organized by type but that's not the case. It's wild & free! Which is cool. Sometimes I wish I had a trail of breadcrumbs when narrowing it down to which tree was the right one. Nope, that one has a hole, nope that one is growing from a branch, nope, that one is too squat, nope, it's crooked. YES! that's the one! After some grumbling from me, I warmed up to the idea that this was a pretty neat experience. The final tree was super tall and fat, but GZ managed to cut him down to a more manageable size. Felt like the trees were a little picked over but there's literally thousands of trees here so I can't imagine leaving without a tree. Literally, thousands. $50 is seriously a good deal if you're getting a huge tree; we got an average one but I'll say we spent $15 for the experience =) Hot chocolate and cider for free, mostly self serve. Lady wasn't super friendly when I asked for hot chocolate but hey, it's free. Free firewood, which we forgot to take advantage of. Duh. Tamales were gone by the time we got out of there (4ish), wah! Also, we left the saw up at the top and no one gave us a hard time about it. Girls at the gate were super sweet. Love that is has that family run feeling to it. read more

Started coming to the Santa Cruz mountains to cut our own tree with my parents back in the 70s, when I was a kid. When my family and I moved back to the Bay Area in 2014, I was excited to introduce my kids to the fun experience of cutting your own tree. This was my first time to Four Winds - we decided to come here because their website assured us they are open despite COVID. Experience was ok, reasonable trees in 6-8 foot range. We were looking for something larger - 12-14' is our usual size - but didn't spot any. We'll go back to smaller lots next year - seem to have more luck with those. read more

I recommend going on clear days and not post rain cuz it's muddy. I wore tall riding boots and was fine. Didn't pick a tree but had fine searching for the perfect tree. We almost did not cut our own tree this year, but so glad we did. The kids insisted, and the wife spent some time Saturday night looking online for a good place, and soon we were off early on a bitter cold Sunday morning in order to wedge a tree-hunting expedition into a busy weekend. From the looks of the website, Four winds was deemed most sincere of the christmas tree farms (last year's was a little too slick for me) and it was just as homey when we arrived. The place is big, funky and friendly. Nice people greet you at the gate and hand you a saw, and it just seemed like a nice place to walk around. Prices are good, and the selection is great. The place is huge. Fortunately, our tree was pretty easy to find. (Actually, it was freezing-ass cold, and nobody was feeling particularly picky. Since it was early, tamales were in plentiful supply and they are quite good. $10.00 for six generous home-made tamales, and a quart of fresh salsa for $5.00. We got salsa and 12 tamales, and should have gotten at least 12 more. The kids are already talking about going back next year, but the wife wants go go back next week for more tamales. read more

Finding a tree here was a little bit of a treasure hunt, with many of the trees looking barren on one side, and fluffy and wonderful on the opposite side. The hot chocolate station was also a bit sad, with watery hot chocolate being offered at a lone table with a few cups strewn around it. We did end up finding a really lovely tree that was perfect for our house ... but it took us an hour and a half of searching. No one helped us to tie up the tree (as tree rookies we figured it out ourselves), and no one was manning the pay station at the bottom of the hill either. It wasn't clear if we could drive around the farm, or where to drive for that matter. Even though we were happy with our tree, I think we will be trying another tree farm next year. read more

Our friend hosts a tree cutting party here every year and it is a blast. We set up food and drinks and a bunch of families get together and pick trees. The kids run around, we get a great tree and have a party to top it off. The ranch sells fresh tamales at the entrance which are pretty good. There is free cider, hot chocolate and coffee at the top. They also see snacks. It does get crowded. This year we went on a very rainy, wet, muddy day and the crowds were big. It was fun, but the roads did get a bit treacherous. Our family has been getting our Christmas tree at Four Winds for 45 (yes, forty five) years. My Mom and I have the receipts to prove it. This is a particularly good farm to go to if you have high ceilings, as it is a flat price for any tree (I think lat year it was $50 for any tree, any size). In the vein of winter wonderlands, I'd trade snow, ice skating, parades and just about anything else to celebrate the Christmas season at Four Winds! I first visited with friends the day after Thanksgiving, figuring we'd kick off our first California Christmas with a new tradition of picking out our tree from a local tree farm. We were greeted warmly upon our arrival and after more than an hour walking the beautiful grounds, taking in views, perching on benches hidden amidst the trees and selecting the "most beautiful tree ever," only to find another we liked even more, again and again, from the beautiful and plentiful assortment at Four Winds. We closed out our visit with a cup of (free) hot cider at the upper picnic area, where we also met one of the owners, Greg, whose family has been hosting guests like us, with some families visiting annually for over 50 years! My boyfriend and I are both from the NW and even having grown up with beautiful evergreens in our own backyards, there is no tree farm I've ever visited with a more elegant or quality selection and certainly not for such a fair price as Four Winds! We discovered upon our departure that a lovely gentleman named Jose, along with his wife, prepares tamales daily (often until 3am) and sells them at the entrance/exit for a mere $2 apiece. While he was out of tamales by the time we left, we assured him we'd be back in the morning to get some to enjoy while watching football that afternoon. As promised, we were back bright and early, and were greeted warmly by both Greg and Jose, as well as the best breakfast we could imagine - piping hot tamales! Jose cleaned off two plastic chairs for us and hosted us at the tree farm entrance as warmly as if we were guests in his home. We purchased a dozen tales to take home, as well as some fresh homemade salsa, and had to pace ourselves so as not to eat them for every meal until we ran out. They were fantastic!!! Having still not gotten enough of the atmosphere and cheer at Four Winds, we returned yesterday with over a dozen more friends for a "Christmas picnic." We put blankets out by the horseshoe pit, enjoyed tamales in the sunshine, helped each other pick out trees and enjoyed the unrivaled Christmas spirit we've now come to love at Four Winds. We met most of the rest of the family that owns the ranch and they were even gracious enough to let us in on the location of a rope swing toward the edge of the property. The adults in our group were as thrilled to go track it down as the kids! Upon our departure, Greg and Jose wished us a Merry Christmas and told us they'd be glad to see us next year. Next year?! We hope to back for fantastic company, NorCal's best tamales and the chance to help more friends pick out their perfect Christmas tree again before the week is up! 12/4/19 Went on a Wednesday afternoon, no one was there, no one at the pay booth, no customers in the parking lot...sign on the booth basically says pay here and put check into a slot. Basically pay on you honor! I love that! Less than an hour picking the perfect tree with my toddler and pregnant wife, and slaying it and hauling it to my truck, signing the check for $65 payable to Four Winds Nursery and placing the check into the white hole at the booth. And I'm out. Just drive slow and be mindful of narrow roads and other cars on the gist road route. 12/2018 A Trek for city folk as you'll be driving along narrow mountain roads if you take the black road - gisroute. Free apple cider and hot chocolate is a positive, and netting wasn't extra as well. Most people park in the first parking lot, I did for my first time here on the Sunday after thanksgiving. We arrived around 1115am; busy but manageable. We looked around at the trees near the first parking lot and found that the good trees have been already picked, be back tracked to the trees previous the the first parking lot and immediately found the perfect tree within 15 minutes - one of the better trees we have had in years compared to the other tree farms. Self serve netting stations was a plus especially if you're getting a big tree and want to fit it in the front doorway of the house with ease.
