On our way to Davenport, this place caught my eye, so we stopped on the way back. Our dog, Zoey, appreciates any opportunity to shop, and garden centers are a favorite destination. There is an indoor store as well as outdoor areas to walk through. They had a nice selection of succulents here, and a really cute area designated for children. We were at the Subway across the street when we spotted this nursery. A wide variety of fruit trees, roses, succulents and native California plants are found outside. I was tempted to get the pluot tree, but we just purchased an apricot. We saw kiwi and avocado trees as well. For parents who like to spend time browsing the many plants, there's a cute play area for kids. Inside there is a gift shop with clothing, jewelry, mugs, and stuffed animals. In the air plant section, I found a handy laminated air plant care card! Also, to our surprise, an iguana in a tank! I came away with a beautiful, pink cyclamen! Will visit again soon! read more

Really loved the vibe of this place, been here a few times...until today. Was browsing with friends when overheard a cashier very loudly expressing her distaste for the activism on the UCSC campus. Brazenly stating "i would tell police to plow through them with a tank". I don't care what your politics are, but when you are in your place of work, maybe display an ounce of professionalism and refrain from spewing hate and advocating for violence while on the clock. I'm leaving a 2 star review solely because of the customer service. I did purchase a beautiful fuchsia ballerina flora, but unfortunately, I found it difficult to enjoy my visit with such rude staff. First, while in the green house, I noticed that a worker raised his voice at my friend who was looking at vases. I heard him say "BACK UP!" & I believe that this was in regards to the 6 feet social distance policy. Now, I completely respect the urge to social distance! But 1. every single person had masks & a safe distance between them. 2. When I turned back to look, she was in fact at least 6 feet away from him. 3. Even after she sincerely apologized, he continued to speak to her in a condescending manner. Regardless, respect should always play a key role with any form of exchange. I'm so sure that he would hate it if anyone spoke to HIM that way, especially when they are being nothing but kind towards you. Secondly, when I was in line to pay, a woman called me over to her while my friend paid for her plants right next to me. The woman, after asking for my payment method, asks "do you know how to take care of this?" I noticed there was a line building so I quickly said "oh don't worry about that, it's okay, I'll learn! My grandma-" she cut me off before I could even finish & said "you'll learn? uh... okay?" & smirked. I don't get it? I was going to continue on & state that grandmother owned an entire wall of ballerina fuchsia flora all throughout my childhood & these flowers are not new to me. I own sooooo many plants & love going to nurseries all over California collecting different herbs & flora, so I'm very sad to say that this experience was so bad. When I was waiting for my friends plants to be potted, this same woman shouts "are you still waiting for your receipt??" & I responded "no I am just waiting for my friend to get her plants potted." She completely ignored what I said & I heard her tell the woman on register "hey do you know where her receipt is because she's just standing over there." As if I didn't already let her know TWICE that I was waiting for my friends plants to be potted. As if standing is a crime? The second she saw my friend get her plants, & that I was with her like I said I was, she stopped. Luckily the woman who potted my friends plants was such a sweetheart & I made sure to thank her for all of her kindness & help. But the other two I pray that you learn how to treat every single person you meet with kindness & avoid being anything but. read more

this was the cutest plant nursery ever! was driving on mission street when my friend suddenly saw it on our left next to the valero gas station. it's kind of hidden so i never noticed it until she pointed it out! they've got so many healthy and lovely plants. from gardening vegetables, to herbs, succulents, and dainty little flowers. they also sold the cutest pots and decor. i had to resist from buying everything! if you're really looking for a plant i bet they have something cause this garden was huge. if you just wanna admire their set up i also highly recommend coming here. it's very peaceful and it's nice to interact with some of the locals (: it just gives such friendly vibes! love it here, please check them out! read more

They have a great selection of organic vegetable plants. They have unique items too such as wind tunnels of various styles and colors. We had such a wonderful experience buying our Christmas Tree here! The employees were so nice, helpful and attentive. They greeted us the moment we arrived and helped us every step of the way. They would hold up different trees so we could check them out, and discussed in detail how many bottom branches we should cut off and gave them to us so we can (hopefully lol) build a wreath! I am just so grateful for the extra love during this most challenging time for us all. Santa Cruz community thrives in these small local businesses. This garden center is my #1 preferred place to buy any plant. I'm a nursery junkie. I scour all the local nurseries in the Bay Area, know my mail order sources, and visit garden centers when I travel just for the fun of it. This location has the most wonderful, tasteful selection at the best prices. A protean plant that would cost you $80-100 elsewhere will be $50 here. They have healthy, beautiful plants for your landscape, a nice selection of perennials, and a sizable inventory of indoor plants. The staff are wonderful and the location makes it easy to drive in and out. I make a point to drive (nearly an hour) here if I'm working on a project. read more

After coming here once I am in love with this place. It's so expansive and has so many types of plants. I could see myself going there just to walk around and take in the scenery. I love the huge giraffe sculpture! I found a type of poppy that I'd been looking at many garden centers for, here at the Garden Company. What a great little garden shop! They totally have all of the plants you could ever want for your garden, including shrubs so check 'em out. All of my plants are currently from the garden company, and all of them are alive and healthy. Just give them the sunlight that the type of plants needs and the quench its thirst. Visited this nursery while on vacation with my husband, and was very impressed. They had many plants on my wishlist such as a satin pathos (Silver splash) and a curly lipstick plant :) so exciting!! Lots of greenery and garden tools for a good price. Very knowledgeable, nice and attentive staff. The shop is well taken care of.

Very nice plant selection and some unusual plants for planting for Santa Cruz weather and other zones. I found a group of curly willow trees here that are great for floral arrangements or an unusual hedge. They also have some interesting vines that no one plants anymore. The vines I was most impressed with are the giant clematis. Annuals are fresh and abundant. They have a little noticed vegetable area in the front of the store with some unusual herbs like stevia and an assortment of thymes. Call ahead to see what they might be stocking now. The people here are very helpful, friendly and love what they do is the vibe I like here. I once took a wreath making class here with a bunch of locals and it was FUN x 10! The conversation was light and friendly. The materials were from some local gardens and they made some beautiful wreaths if you have the knack for it which everyone seemed to have thanks to the help of the owner/instructor. I like alot here but what is great is the little indoor gift shop which is garden oriented. They have herb and vegetable picks in lots of styles, greeting cards from local artists, lanterns, table linens, wreaths, glass wasp catchers in pretty colors, outdoor metal sculpture, small and large fountains, planting kits, tools and holiday items during Christmas. They also have an indoor plant area that has some wonderful indoor plants. These are nursery quality indoor plants and orchids. I bought my first chocolate scented orchids here. The plants are a gardeners delight and the gift shop is worth a look if you find yourself in west Santa Cruz. read more

Charlie and Maria have the best garden shop in Santa Cruz County! The fact that their employees have been there so long (25+ years in one case) is a testament to the "family" nature of thie family business. If they don't have what you are looking for, they will try to get it for you. They call with the status of your order, stay in touch and can recommend alternatives if they can't get your plant. Highly knowledgeable, everyone there strives to be as helpful as they can. They never blow you off or look irritated or bored with your trivial gardening questions. Even when they are super busy, they will stop and give you the attention a customer deserves. That is why they have been there so long, and that is why they will stay in business. Whoa, I totally have been living the cloistered life when it comes to Santa Cruz garden stores. I had always gone to San Lorenzo Garden Center (now Probuild) for plants and trees or to Aptos Gardens... At the Garden Company I had the wonderful experience of happening upon Lance. Lance is so knowledgeable and helpful. I had questions about two varieties of persimmon that I was considering for my garden. Well, I come to find out that there are tons of varieties and I walked out with a totally different variety (chocolate- yum) in mind - thanks all to Lance. Their gift area of the store is incredibly statisfying. The garden company reminds me of my all time favorite, Bainbridge Gardens which I get nostalgic for around this time of year (fall). I now will only be coming here for my garden items! read more

I love this place, truly is as good as it gets! The insight and knowledge has helped me grow so much as a gardener and pass it along to my neighbors and passers-by who admire my garden. I live in Seabright and I schlep over to the Westside for their wonderful little gem of a nursery, though it helps that I ventured in when my BF used to live over there. They started me off small when we got a few hanging plants. Easy. Then we broadened into succulents in baskets. Some fared better than other. Then I decided to fill a box with succulents and put in on my fire-escape in my then home in the city. Then they got to big and I needed another box. Then I wanted to learn how to tend the roses at the BF's house that the landlord neglected but had obvious beauty. They taught me how to do that. Oh those roses were wonderful once I brought them back! Then the plants I moved down here and we got a big new garden and all the people at the Garden Co. held my had through everything. From citrus to winter veggies, to gophers and slugs. I think some days they'd see my car pull in and hold their breath. I would come laden with about 20 questions, and each one was dire, or so I thought. Now I come with just 2 or 3, but they are always just as helpful and just as nice. Plus they always recommend some fantastic products, or let me test out something I looked up online, despite its validity, they have it in stock. They selection of clippers, pruning shears, gloves, saws, all those notions is also amazing... (currently making a bag with pockets to put all of these in- wooo organizing!) I have never faltered when I got a recommendation on those items. The items that are breaking down? the cheaper ones I got as a big store- obviously. That was obvious, but They are so helpful in guiding me without TELLING me what I HAVE to have, but what is more comfortable. As for someone saying they couldn't return something. I was surprised, because I worked very hard on a gift for a friend (with the Fairy Garden extraordinaire herself) but then this friend never really came through to make this gift. With receipt in hand, I was allowed to return items, quite easily. Though I definitely kept the plants because who doesn't love nemesia or strawberries? And I always take advantage of them potting plants if you buy the pot and the plant. I go through enough potting soil and dirt as it is, thats a wonderful little free-be, is it not? read more

So I showed up the 8th. I went here to buy a small memorial plant. The 9th Sept. is a heavy day for me. But i hoped to find a Tremble Fern... Never got that far. I cant agree with Leslie because gardening can lead to wildness, naked wildness. A good garden brings out the naked wild child in just about everybody. Tall tall mexican sunflower bushes with all the butterfly and hummingbird plants, tall grasses a little hot tub and voila naked drunkeness ensues on moonlight nights! Especially when mixed liberally with datura and nght blooming plants! Anyway I digress, this is a great spot with really nice people and you can get alll organic and stuff. read more

I love the wide and affordable selection of plants here! I got 5 plants during my last visit. I prefer to shop in peace so I went early in the morning and most of the staff was watering plants or doing other work so I was not approached by anyone. I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was really nice to not have to make small talk. I would like to add the employees were very nice during check out. I love the safety precautions they've been taking. I stop by every time I'm in Santa Cruz. read more

This place is so amazing. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They make themselves available to answer any questions you have, and will take as much time as it takes to help you find what you need. There are three or four nurseries in the area. I went to all of them last week to price out houseplants, and The Garden's plants were 25-40% cheaper than all of the other places around here. Pretty decent sized place for plants, employees have always been nice and helpful. They don't have a huge selection of succulents like other places do but what they do have is decently priced and not always the every day succulent. Saw some "rare"one this time here that ive never seem at other places. They carry lots of corny objects for decorating your outside area too. read more
