The Birkenstock thong sandals turned out to have a hard plastic between the toes and nothing will soften for comfortable wear. The selection is fine--the standard Birkenstock models. My comments apply only to service. In this regard, I have some leatherwork experience (mostly Renaissance Faire costumery), so I have a pretty good handle on how long a job should take. I had buckles replaced by Velcro on one pair. A 2-hour job at most. Two months. Right now they are exactly one month late on another, prepaid repair job, though I was told that an effort was made to contact me earlier--a text to a land line. read more

Came in for my first pair, and was immediately directed to Paul for a fitting. He took one look at my feet and guessed my size, and wouldn't you know, he was correct! He also pointed out some aspects of my feet that I hadn't known that might be helpful when buying shoes in the future (i.e. long arches). I had an awesome experience at this store as Summer assisted my wife and I with purchasing Birkenstock's. Firstly I appreciate the store taking extra steps with social distancing and minimizing the number of people at one time. The store as a wide selection of shoes, more than just Birkenstock's. Summer was knowledgeable about the various options and more than willing to assist us with trying on several pairs of shoes to find the right fit. I came in here after trying to order my daughter's first pair of Birkenstocks online. I loved that the lady that helped us was very knowledgeable about the product and materials. My daughter has arthritis and we'll be going on a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney soon and wanted something comfortable for her to walk in. The style my daughter wanted though was not instore so it had to be ordered, the lady offered to order it from the store instead of ordering from the website. I of course called back later that day and decided to order it through the store since she had already been through the trouble of helping us out. I ordered them on March 1st and was told they should arrive by the following Friday (8) or Saturday (9). Since I didn't receive a receipt or confirmation I called on Friday to check on them since I wanted to gift them on Saturday (1 year anniversary since my 12year old woke up from life support). I was told that they had been set aside but hadn't been shipped! The lady apologized and said they would try to ship them that same day Friday and would send them overnight, in reality I was expecting them to arrive on the Monday, but it's Tuesday and I still have not received them or heard a word on why they havent been shipped!! read more

I had never owned birkenstocks before heading into the birkenstock store in Kerrytown. I didn't know what I would want, I just wanted sandals that weren't so bad for my feet. I tried on, I kid you not, a dozen pairs of sandals, back and forth for like an hour. What service! In the end, I chose a pricey pair, and bought them. Here's my beef with other reviewers. Sure, you could go into this store, try the shoes on, decide which ones you like, then leave and buy them online. But, that would make you a complete A-hole. If you don't need to try on the shoes, then buy them online. If you do, is it worth paying $15 less online? I didn't think so. I was happy to pay the asking price and give this store my business. Great local business selling quality products like Birkenstocks in a variety of styles. Yes, it's a little pricey but you get an excellent quality shoe that will last you forever. I stopped into Fourth Ave Birkenstock to try on a different size sandal from the one I had recently purchased online, to see if I should switch to a smaller size. Although, I didn't end up purchasing anything from the store, I received excellent service from one of the women working the store. She was very knowledgable about the products, and how to properly take care of them to limit future wear and tear. She was also able to give me a quote on some repairs I needed on my old pair of birkenstocks. I also think it is worth noting that I stopped in the store during a very busy time of day during the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Upon walking in, I was quickly assisted by the friendly staff. You can tell that this is a family owned business that takes pride in its work. I will be returning in the future for any accessories, repairs or any other needs! read more

Got what I went in for but not a good shopping experience. Store is rundown and unclean. I had to wait a long time because the clerk was helping the one other customer and she didn't even acknowledge me. When I finally asked her if I could try something on she looked at me rudely. I have buying shoes and wool socks and sweaters here for several years. They carry the best stuff and leave out the rest. Wonderful people. Feel good about buying here. I just was in to buy some Birkenstock Profis for work. First the price was ten dollars more than the cheapest online source, which did not include shipping. So I was happy with the price. The ladies at the store were patient while I ran around their store trying to run in the clogs. They were helpful in getting shoes that fit and explaining what I needed from a clog. This was all while my two year old bounced around the store, he was fussy, and it wasn't easy for her. They handled me and my fussy kid with good humor, charged me the same as I would online, introduced me to some comfy socks and were a pleasure to deal with. I love that there's a local business that's been around as long as these folks. Paul and Claire are so friendly and helpful, as are their staff. I've been buying Birkenstocks from them for going on 20 years. They've repaired (resoled) several pairs for me, too. Full price for these shoes hurts, but you get what you pay for (my feet are very grateful and there are occasional sale items) and despite my regular Amazon purchases, I'll always buy my Birkenstocks here (unless I'm in Germany!) read more

I've been needing an umbrella for years! I got caught on a rainy day downtown walking from store to store, they were the first out of 10 that actually carried umbrellas. It was definitely a nicer umbrella but still under 50 bucks. It is very rugged though so I'm sure I'll have it for 10 years at least. The staff was very kind and pleasant! I first went to Fourth Ave Birks. In 1990 and I got fabulous service and a great pair of Boston's that I still wear today. I was in town again last week and stopped in the store. After all of these years nothing had changed. The sales girl was wonderfully knowledgable and spent a lot of time with putting me in different shoes, explaining the benefits and intended wearer of each shoe. I have owned Birkenstocks for 3 decades. Go to Mast shoes or to have your shoes repaired to Park Shoe Repair across the street and down a block. I brought my shoes to Fourth Avenue Birkenstocks to be repaired. The owner warned me that the repair would take a long time and estimated 6 weeks. The repair also cost $114. Another $20-$40 can buy a new pair. I said this would be ok because repairing the shoes is part of the beauty of Birkenstocks. After 5 weeks I was hopeful and checked on my shoes-- not done. Oh well. After 2 months-- not done and I was told they would be done the next week. At 10 weeks the owner was on vacation and my shoes were not done but I was told they would be done when he got back. At 3 months they were not done. Finally at 3 months and a week I got a call that they were done. When I picked up the shoes, I complained about how long it took. A very snarky sales girl told me that if the box for approximate time was checked it can take however long. Box for approximate time? I told her I was given an estimate of 6 weeks and it took 3 months. She snarked back that they had over a hundred pairs of shoes to repair. I replied they should have been upfront about the wait time and given me the option to not have my shoes repaired there. She did not reply at that point and I was incredibly irritated and paid the $114 and left. The shoes look nice, but the service was slow and the in-store sales help had serious attitude. read more
