New Castle Court House Museum is a must see if you're spending a day exploring colonial New Castle…read more It was built in 1732 and served as Delaware's first court and state capitol. It was on the second floor of the court house building that Delaware declared independence from Pennsylvania and England (did you know that Delaware was a part of Pennsylvania and that it had to declare its independence from them? I didn't). New Castle Court House Museum is operated by the National Park Service. They have tours at set times (you can check their website or ask around town and they'll let you know the schedule). We waited on the steps of the courthouse for the 1pm tour last Saturday, and our tour guide was amazing. She talked so fast during our tour that I learned two hours of information about Delaware, New Castle, and the court house during the hour and twenty minutes the tour lasted! It is definitely one of the most interesting and important sites in New Castle - not to be missed if it's your first time visiting.

Little-known cultural jewel in Delaware County! I believe when we took the tour they said this is…read morethe oldest structure still standing in Delco! First, yes, this is kind of out of the way of more obvious places, and is on some "back roads" for those not familiar with that part of Delco ("back roads" as in winding through the residential parts of Brookhaven/Upland, not as in some rural route). You will literally have to drive through a neighborhood of 20thC homes in order to get to Race Street, where what remains of the plantation is located. But it's easy enough to get to, with "Pusey Plantation" signs pointing the way when you are close, and definitely worth the trip. The address says Brookhavem but it really seems like it is in Upland, FYI. The location is kind of behind some project housing, which is so bizarre given the fact that this used to be a homestead on a 100-acre farm. But don't think you are in the wrong place, just keep going until you see it around the corner. The heavily constructed area will open up to a small park and the old home. It's a little oasis in the middle of sprawl and creeping citification. The tour (offered May - Oct), is really intimate in the tiny house, and the antiques and period items are very cool to see up close. The guide was personable, and very friendly about asking questions and showing her love of local culture and the history of the home. They host a fall festival which is great for kids (as is the tour, which they adjust for kids' interest levels). Here is info from their website: "Built in 1683 and occupied by Caleb Pusey, this is the only building still standing which can claim documented association with the Proprietor, William Penn, and which he is known to have visited on several occasions. It was an important site for development and testing of military experimental projects. Space limitations led to the transfer of most operations following the war. The final flight from DuPont Airfield was in 1958. The site was used by the DuPont Company for construction of the Barley Mill research and development center. "

He was accompanied by Delaware Representative John W. Houston and two other members of Congress, who were returning to Washington from the Whig National Convention that had chosen Zachary Taylor as the party's presidential nominee. The future President and his colleagues delivered their remarks from a balcony at the east end of the Fourth Street Market House, a complex of buildings which stood in the center of 4th Street between Orange and Market. Introduced as the "Lone Star of Illinois," Mr. Lincoln was greeted with great enthusiasm by those in attendance. In a speech that was praised as "eloquent and patriotic," he extolled the principles of the Whig party and the virtue of its candidates. This was his only documented visit to the First State. After serving one term in Congress, he left public office to return to his law practice in Illinois. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States."

I also reported the old location closed yesterday, and added tips to announce the new location on both the old and new pages... but then today, Yelp MOVED MY PHOTOS to the listing for the old address. Odd, isn't it? Repeatedly these things happen to me on Yelp, and repeated reach-outs to the local Yelp woman go un-helped. I work hard to contribute to Yelp and it's clear that my input isn't valued at all by Yelp. So this is for the legit users who care about my attempt at helpful content... The new location of Middletown Free Library is now near Wayside Market, and Bortondale, the former Penn-DOT DMV. Currently, you need to look for signs for Roosevelt School, because there is not even a temporary banner of signage indicating that the library is here. When you pull in, make sure to drive to the rear of the Roosevelt School on the right of the school (from the road). Look for the book deposit box, and the entrance is there. Again, signage is still in the works. This is the brand new space, much larger than the old one. I was speaking with the librarian at the circulation desk and we guesstimated that the whole 2 floors of the old location could fit in the ground floor of the new space! But, the new place has a second floor, currently under renovation, so it will be drastically larger than the former space. The children's area is separate from the main library space, with a glass wall to keep sound contained. This was great at story time with Mr. Jason, because the kids had their own place to be themselves. Singing, banging on drums, bubbles, etc. After story time, extra toys came out, and my toddler had a ball. Mr. Jason really gets into his stories, and the kids can't help but become as enthusiastic as he. On the way out, the librarian had chocolates and candy canes to give us, which was so sweet. I took tons of pictures of the new space but Yelp seems to have a problem with that, so you'll have to check the old page for the DOZENS of pictures they moved. I don't have time for the bs anymore.

The only issue is that Google Maps will take you to the wrong entrance (next to the fire station). Instead, you have to take the next exit and drive around. There is a small lawn sign for the library, which is easy to miss, but if you see the school, the library is on the backside, so just drive around. You won't regret it!
