Long overdue, but finally getting around to writing this review. I could not believe the service I received. Chris, I believe is the manager, dropped what he was doing to help me in between everything else he was doing that day, locate and install new Deck screws onto my scooter because of a botched repair job from a local scooter repair man. I have nerve damage and cannot hold a screw driver properly let alone turn it with any strength. He added silicone washers to help keep moisture out from the battery compartment, and because so many screws that the repair guy used had messed up with threads of the deck, he patiently and meticulously went through and fitted each hole (because yes, each one was now a different size! My scooter deck is now secure and more watertight than ever before! I am so happy, and Chris was so kind and understanding helping with something that seems so simple for so many but is rather difficult and next to impossible for me. It is now my go to hardware store for anything needed in my home. THANK YOU!!!! read more

I've been going to this store since I moved to DC in 2017. The store has a great selection, but more importantly, the staff are incredibly helpful and patient. When I've gone to big hardware stores (looking at you Lowe's in Fort Lincoln!), staff have been very condescending when I've asked questions - I've been told that I'm just not trying hard enough. Reasonable selection of hardware provided by Ace which is basically a rack jobber. Service, however, rides on the reputation earned by Jules and George Frager who were succeeded by John Weintraub and Ed Copenhaver. Both owners were local, knew hardware, hired knowledgeable people, and cared about taking care of customers. The new owner, who runs a hardware conglomerate of stores around DC and Baltimore, fired or lost all of the staff who actually new the hardware business and replaced them with a changing cohort of newbies who don't "know a hawk from a handsaw." I asked one of the staff for a boat cleat to secure a rope and he told me that when I found it I should show it to him so he'd know what it was. I found it after rounding up another staff and took it to the lone cashier upstairs. Another time I asked someone in the paint department about the difference between water based polyurethane and oil based and was told there was no difference. Dead wrong. Six people were waiting in line, the cashier was already on the phone for a fairly long time and no effort was made to provide another cashier even though three other employees were roaming behind the counter doing little. After close to 15 minutes in line and no indication that help was on its way anytime soon I walked. I found what I was looking for at Jenks Hardware nearby. read more

I frequent this store alot in the past until a few days ago I really don't care for the management staffi was asking an employee about paint and some cleaning products we were having a conversation and we laughed up walks the "General Manager" I knew this because as I was walking in they were boasting about being that to employees and customers as they walked through the door and I could tell the employee felt uncomfortable by the way she paused in the middle of our conversation she asked the employee about something they Didn't complete on some other isle I tried not to pay attention but the way she talked to.that employee was really unpleasant she apologized to me and walked away but my questions were still unanswered instead of bothering the employee after what they just went through I just Googled what I needed to know as I'm walking past I hear the "General Manager" talking about me and the employee and ask her what's her problem she says nothing and looks me up and down I start to walk away some guy with dreads asks me is there a problem at that point I felt threatened and I just put my products back and left as I'm look at the comments the owner doesn't care and gives bullshit responses to people that have gripes with this Manager and the store it seems like different people been having the same problem for a few years now Ns nothing is being done to remedy this issue I'm just wondering is it because I'm a straight man because I've noticed all the LGBTQ products throughout the store I've even seen the flag painted on the windows of the store and majority of the management staff are in that community whatever her problem is or was she shouldn't be in management she very biased towards specific groups of people read more

I'm so sad to write this review, but it's just not Frager's anymore. The name is there, but the staff, knowledge and inventory are sorely lacking. I keep trying but I think it's time to give up and make the trek to Home Depot or Lowe's. Frager's is no longer the go-to place for everything you could need for your Cap Hill home - instead it's just another sterile place that may or may not have what you need and staff who may or may not be available to help. f I could give a negative star, I'm sure others would as well. So they moved back to the original location, as of writing this review right now, the new page mentioned the store new location is not open and it's 9am??. The new owners only see dollar signs, but they'll learn the hard way, you don't mess with what works for the neighborhood and the people that use to bring you business. Getting rid of the staff that knew every inch of the store,greeted every customer and was always there to help out a fellow coworker. Ace IS NOT THE PLACE, hiring people for lower wages, and no idea what they're doing. Too bad, the new owners and new staff will never understand what it's like to know "real customer service" and not wait around for the register to ring up what little business they have...smh! read more

Don't be fooled by the fancy new location or Ace name - this place is a neighborhood institution! It has been our family's hardware store for decades, and the staff is always incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and willing to take the time to explain how to do projects right. Always worth coming here over the big box store to get the advice and support, and neighborhood vibe! I do miss the cat that used to hang out at the store though... maybe she missed the move to the new location :) read more

The outdoor area here is wonderful and always well stocked. Every time we've come, Kat has been so knowledgeable and friendly. We were plant novices at best on our first trip in and now are flush with beautiful plants and know exactly how to take care of them. The service continues to decline. While one is sometimes immediately greeted with "may I help you" and the employees who do that generally seem to know how to help, I have heard other staff members tell customers they should wait while the employee continues (slowly) stocking shelves, and I recently had a LONG wait for a couple of small cans of paint when there wasn't a line. They also consistently close before the actual closing time and/or hustle customers out as early as 15 minutes prior to closing. Hey Fragers - if you want to malign Home Depot and Amazon then you need to step up your game! read more

Frager's has been my neighborhood hardware store for 40 years and I have always been a loyal customer. However, their response to Covid-19 is disappointing and dangerous. No layout changes have been made to support social distancing, especially at checkout. Also, staff restocking shelves are constantly running back and forth between the customers, who have no way to step aside to maintain appropriate distance. Unfortunately I must advise that the store should be avoided - both outside garden shop and interior spaces -- until it makes some changes to keep staff and customers safer, or a vaccine is available. read more

Stopped by ACE to have 3 keys made. I went to the key counter and the person that was at that counter told me to press the help button for help which I did. No one showed so after 5 or so mins I press it again and someone called out saying I'm with a customer so I waited. This took almost 20 mins of waiting and to have 3 keys made. I then go upstairs to pay and there was two young girls there not paying attention to the counter so I called out "where do I pay", then one of the girls came over took my payment. I was the only person at the counter at the counter so very unprofessional. Not being very happy with this I called after I left and asked to speak to the manager, and spoke with Aisha. She listened and said sorry. My point here is when it was Frager's you can always count on good service, but since ACE took them over its just another hardware store. Sad day. read more

For years, I got my duplicate keys made here. I recently moved and needed spare keys. I have now tried to get my keys to my new place made twice here. Both times, I've made the 30 minute walk home to find they didn't work or worked so poorly my dog walker couldn't get in. Im too frustrated to go back and give them a third chance. I just need functioning keys. read more

I came in for a key copy. Wow is it hard to find somewhere in the city that does this now. Frager's was close to my house, and not super expensive like the kiosk's you see around. Love to have a hardware store nearby for any last minute needs. read more

I've lived on Capitol Hill for 36.5 years. Frager's used to be the best place to shop. The customer service used to be beyond amazing. But recently I came in and wanted a key cut. They did not have the original key I needed so I purchased it online and came back. Mind you, I'm more than happy to pay for the key to be cut, or whatever they charge. The guy told me that they don't do it any longer if you don't buy the key there. That's just simply stupid. Then perhaps you should make sure you have all the keys in stock. The person that helped me was very nice and cut they key anyhow. I think the manager was the person who checked me out and I told him it was my own key. He said they are not supposed to do that. They key works awesome and I want to thank the guy in the key area for helping me out and for his customer service. If I caused any issues for the employee, I'm truly sorry! I'm giving the review 4 stars only for the employee, not for the new stringent rules, which seem to apply to everything. To the manager: It's not so hard for customers to go to Lowes where things are cheaper. We shop there because we are loyal and appreciate the customer service as it used to be before the place was sold. read more

This store has really gone downhill. You used to be able to call to find out if they have a product. Now, you get told to look it up on the parent company website that may or may not get you to the supplies in the store. In my case, I was directed to the Brookland franchise of ACE with no option to get to the closer Frager's store. I called three times trying to explain to the person on the other end that the site isn't helping. Why they couldn't direct me to a human being who could find out if the product I was inquiring about was there (a certain dimension of window blinds) seems unbelievable. On the other hand, when I have gone in to buy routine things, the service and pleasantness of the staff have been fine. I don't know how soon I will be back, though. read more

I wish this was the same Frager's as before the fire. Sadly customer service is now sorely lacking. I purchased an item from Frager's today that was over $100. As we waited to have it loaded into my car, I found that the Ace Hardware online store was offering the exact same product with a $30 discount. The manager on duty said she was not able to price match. So I returned what I bought and ordered it online with the $30 discount and had it shipped to Frager's for free. How does that make any sense? read more

He was pleasant and took all necessary info and said he would call with an estimate. 3 visits and 3 calls later, I am still waiting for a response. Don't go here in the morning if a black lady is on staff( because they wouldn't give me her name at the time). She is rude to people for sure. My friends said they had incidents at the store about a mask with a black lady and I laughed. Didn't really consider the seriousness behind the stories. I even called up there to report the the staff members and the MOD didn't seem in disagreement with the staff member's judgment. So apparently Fragers is training their staff to be aggressive "security officer authority " toward their customers for a mask and muscling them into buying one. So the rules there are : you can't enter the store without a mask but u can stand in line with that one to purchase a mask for 3.99 and or you can't be served without the mask Fragers staff members approve. The black lady says, "no face coverings, no scarf or bandanna is approved to be served." Just the ones they offer for purchase. This is how Fragers conceals viruses. No other store in DC has this requirement. I don't usually walk into any store without a mask but this time I dropped my mask out my lap into the wet curb. So whatever you do...don't forget to have a spare mask and GOD forbid if it's a bandanna (which I think is bullshit) you better off going to HomeDepot. BYW HD provide mask. read more

I usually would rate this store a 5, but in the past week I have been there 4 times for a project I'm working on. Frager's has all the rules and procedures in place for COVID-19: staggered entrance (I had to wait outside one time); lines on the floor demarcating the safe, 6-foot distance, and masks required of every customer. AND yet, there is one worker who doesn't wear his mask; ever. Each time i go he is there, and he gets close to you and interacts, talks, laughs, etc...all the while why all of the customers and everyone else on staff are masked. How does this make sense?! They say the wearing masks are to show others that you care and are keeping any potential risk you have out of harm's way. But not Fragers. I am so disappointed. read more

I'm new to the neighborhood and grateful to have Frager's within walking distance! I have already made multiple trips for things to help me get settled in my new place and the staff has been super helpful each visit. Especially during these crazy times with covid 19. Following my complaint on 9/11/19, I am pleased to report that the management was very responsive - I commend Gina S and Aisha Bryant for contacting me promptly. Although it took about 3 months, my tempered glass finally arrived (it appears that the vendor had some difficulties) and Ms. Bryant very graciously and, to my utter surprise, waived all charges for the piece of tempered glass. read more

I needed more copies of keys and had not been back to Frager's in about a decade. Coincidentally, there was a recent review from Doug B. that indicated he had redeemed a Yelp offer for one free key. Upon entering the store, everything is much better spaced and staff was helpful. The gentleman who assisted me downstairs was perfectly pleasant as well. However, after I paid for my keys and was leaving I glanced at the receipt and although it indicated a Yelp discount had been applied, I was charged for all of them anyway. As I was heading back down, he was coming up because he also realised the discount wasn't applied. However, a lady who appeared to be a manager asserted it was applied and was firm about it. I didn't feel like pressing the issue for a couple of bucks, so I simply left, but it did leave a bad impression for a local business that I used to patronize frequently for just about every household need before the building was gutted by fire.
