Fragrant Bakery is now my family's go-to for "wife cookies" (老婆饼) whenever they go to Toronto. My cousins brought back a box of them for us this past weekend. The winter melon paste had a unique chewy flavor and a bit of crunch here and there that was delicious. Glad it wasn't mushy or soggy, the next day when we got them. It's still flaky and crispy as long as you air fry it correctly. Definitely one of the best I've ever had, and I'm pretty picky about them. So yummy, I would highly recommend the 老婆饼 from Fragrant Bakery, and I'm sure their other pastries are delicious too, based on other Yelp reviews! Hidden inside a small plaza, this tiny bakery is legendary for its wife cake, egg tart and milk pudding. So I had to try. The wife cake was huge and think. I loved how there were plentiful fillings when other bakeries skimmed out on it. The egg part's filling was nice and creamy, and not overly sweet. The milk pudding is addictive. I loved eating it after chilling it in the fridge. It has a nice light texture and also not so sweet as well. I have been there twice, and both times there were lineups, so be patient as it's worth the wait. read more

I came here with my sister (who has been dying to come try their egg tarts). We arrived in the parking lot and had to figure out where the storefront was. It is located inside the strip mall. You can go through the foodcourt from the parking lot (there is a side door to get into the small strip). It's definitely a little hole in the wall bakery so they limit how many people can go in at once. We got 6 egg tarts; 2 sponge cakes and 2 wife pastries for a total of $23 in Canadian dollars. We had really good timing because when we arrived they just baked some fresh egg tarts. Funny enough tho, my sister came here because she heard about their egg tarts, but their storefront sign actually highlights their site pastries instead. The egg tarts were to die for. They melt in your mouth. I did not eat it fresh out of the oven because the lady warned out that it was very hot, especially that hot tray. But even after a couple of hours, it was still worth it! The Wife pastries were very good too. Not too sweet, just the right about of buttery ratio and honestly one of the best ones I've ever had. Originally my family was not going to get it, but when I saw the sign outside I knew I HAD to get it and I am so glad I did. The sponge cakes, those were interesting. I was trying to imagine this like those asian "paper cup cupcakes" but it was actually not like that. The concept was similar but the sponge cakes were very dense. The consistency reminded me of Uncle Tetsu's cake. Not bad, but just different that expected. Overall, come check it out if you are nearby! Might throw you off if you're not into ding-ier looking places but trust me, it'd a hidden gem. Located in a quiet strip mall, there was a line going out of the unit when my friend and I went. Service was quick, they have 2-3 people working the front, asking you what your order is and then bagging everything for you. It's a tiny place so it helps with the flow of the store better than having people go in and grab items with tongs individually. I would make the bold claim that it is better than any I've ever had in the Bay Area, Seattle, Portland, Vegas, and NYC! Ambiance: This is not going to be an extravagantly decorated bakery or elegant store front like other establishments. Instead, it's a homely and familiar atmosphere. If you've been to a Hong Kong style bakery, it's exactly what you'd expect. Friendly and fast service. Old Chinese music played in the background and prices written on paper signs with permanent marker. There may be a line but it shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes to get though. I ordered everything in Cantonese. They were also taking orders from patrons in mandarin. Don't forget cash! If you're a fan of Hong Kong style egg tarts this is the place to go! The crust is perfectly laminated with layers and layers of buttery deliciousness. Not only is it flaky, but it provides the perfect exterior crunch. When enjoyed fresh, the middle and most inner layers are soft due to the moisture from the center. The egg component is like that of a flawlessly executed flan, so smooth and delicate. Literally each bite melts in your mouth. The sweetness is the perfected balance of not too sweet but just sweet enough. I highly encourage you to pair this with some warm milk tea. This is how we should all start our days! Tip: We ended up buying a dozen, they do store in the fridge well. If you want to reheat these, pop them in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes on 350F/176C. They were great to enjoy for the next couple of days. Their other buns and goodies looked amazing but we came here specifically for the egg tarts. What an appropriate name for a tiny bakery inside a "locals only" strip mall. You walk inside and your nose will lead you straight to this place! I came on a Sunday and needed some fresh egg tarts. Unfortunately, they had run out and the next batch would be ready in 20 minutes. I paid, got my receipt, and was happy to be number 3. Good thing was there was only one family ahead of me and they got numbers 1 and 2. Wandering back and forth in this deserted indoor space, the line kept growing. Some people would get no egg tarts and were served accordingly. It's obvious this little storefront has a solid customer base. Eventually, the lady inside called for 1 and 2, remembering they were together. The anticipation was real. I was next! I proudly walked by everyone waiting for their share. As someone who grew up eating egg tarts, I was curious how valid the hype was for their egg tarts. I was pleasantly surprised.... The egg tarts were not too sweet and the filling was so jiggly. They were still warm from sitting on the hot tray. The flaky crust was a little thicker than most egg tarts and that's my favourite part! $2 per tart. The bakery is tucked away in a little mall. One of the oldest Chinese bakery in Scarborough that is super tiny but has a lot of popular Chinese buns and pastries. They are well known for their Wife cakes and egg tarts. Came here after reading the yelp reviews and they were not wrong. This place does have the best wife cakes (lo por beng). You know it's good when your Taishanese mom approves! There are small chunks of winter melon inside. The outside is super flaky. Their pineapple buns albeit kinda small were also super tasty as well. This bakery has the best sweetheart cakes! Crispy and flaky on the outside with the right amount of chew inside. The black sesame Swiss roll is delicious here too and not overly sweet. We also ordered the Black Forest cake and green tea Swiss roll which my family thought were misses.. I didn't try the Black Forest but as a green tea lover, I really wanted to enjoy the Swiss roll, but it didn't have any tea flavour at all and really tasted like a vanilla Swiss roll with green food colouring. My mom loves their wife (sweetheart) cake which only makes sense that I drop by while I'm in the area. They are located inside the building. It happened to be early afternoon with 2 people ahead of me. They currently allow one person in at a time or two people from the same household. Cute bakery! The workers here are super lovely and sweet! As a big fan of egg tarts, we came here to try their pastry. It was nice and flakey, but not very eggy. I personally like my egg tarts to have a more full-bodied egg taste. However, these egg tarts aren't too sweet, which I personally like. The bottom of the pastry was a bit burnt, but it wasn't too noticeable. Overall, it's a nice bakery. Quite unassuming due to the location, but pretty nice. Note: there are no seats here. Saw some online reviews and comments stating Fragrant has the best or one of the best wife cakes (lo paw bang) In Toronto. I'm not a fan of these cakes as I had a few in my life time in NYC and around the US but the girlfriend is and misses the good ones found in HK. So we visited Fragrant Bakery in search of their wife cakes. Pleasantly found this is a OG bakery with decades of history and it shows because one bite of their wife cake my girlfriend was smiling and one bite for me I enjoyed this wife cake. It is not too sweet, flaky exterior layer, soft moist interior layer, and delicately delicious throughout. What a surprise that I bought a dozen to drive back to NYC with us for friends/family. My family swears by this bakery for sweetheart cakes, preferring this over the other one. Every time they come visit, they buy at least 6 boxes to bring it back to Montreal for friends and family because there is simply no good sweetheart cakes in Montreal. Funny enough, I also bumped into some Montrealer who was also buying a lot to bring it back to Quebec haha :) I never visited super early in the morning and I think I will not ever again. Because the first and only time I went in the morning to get a box of these sweetheart cakes, the wife's cakes were not that fresh. Actually, they were maybe a little too long in the oven, about to be burned. My friend who got the low sugar ones also told me they were not as fresh as usual. It looks like they baked these cakes the night before so they can get ready for the morning rush. Also, it looks like the cakes have shrunk in size and the price went up too. Anyhow, will revisit in the afternoon and see whether it makes a difference. They are also closed on Thursday.. I forgot they were not open as I was about to buy some goodies the night before for my family before going back Montreal and had to go to the other bakery down the road. My family could tell they were not from the same place and told me for next time, just try to get the cakes from Fragrant. Customer service is non existent because the ladies working there can be quite "quirky". If you are Chinese, you will know what I mean LOL Expect a line at all times since the shop is super small and narrow and they can only serve one customer at a time. Small in size but huge in flavor, don't let the size or look of this shop fool you. This place is crowded and not just because of the prices -- inside you'll find excellent Hong Kong style pastries in not-too-sweet preparations. A word of warning though, it gets really crowded really easily and the labeling isn't the best (really helps if you know Chinese). However, the quality of the product really makes these extra inconveniences worth it -- as there's definitely an extra level of execution evident with each bite. Not only are the flavors wonderful, but the textures really shine -- particularly if you are able to get an egg tart or coconut tart fresh from the oven. Went to Fragrant Bakery around 12 noon on a Wednesday. As soon as you walk into the mall, and you can smell the fragrance of the bakery Lol. There was a line up of about 6 people. When it was my turn in line, I placed my order for their famous Egg Tarts but of course they were sold out. I was told to come back in five minutes and was given an order number (3). The customer service was great although there was a bit of a language barrier, thankfully one of the kind customers helped with translations as I had questions about how long the custard tarts could stay in the fridge. Overall great experience, I will definitely be coming back for more Egg Tarts! read more

Came across this bakery after ordering food from Ho Ho BBQ. There was a decent size line at around 1pm. The pastries and buns are made/served fresh AND I saw them serving off the cooling racks to customers too! They serve the typical variety of Hong Kong pastries and buns, but we stuck with just getting an egg tart because we were about to eat lunch. The Egg Tart custard was super flavorful and not too sweet. The crust was flakey, but felt like they used a bit too much butter since the bottom was bright yellow and was a bit oily too. Always have to make a stop here before heading home. The store is very small and narrow. It does get crowded and the line can be out the door. You must know what you want by the time it is your turn. The staff is friendly but do to the long lines they are all business. One employee takes your order and packs it while another employee collects the money. This place was recommended by a friend when I told her I was looking for BBQ buns for an upcoming catering event. I drive past this plaza all the time and I never knew there were so many restaurants and BBQ shops in here. I always thought it was an office building. I love this place. I love how dingy it is. I love how cramped and tiny it is. Honestly, I'm not a fan of Chinese buns - esp those from T&T and your neighbourhood Chinese bakeries. I hate how big they are and I don't like the ratio of filling:bun. Their classic Chinese bakery items are the BEST. All of their buns are mini size! The bread is soft and pillowy, unlike other bakeries which are really dry and hard. The wife cakes are amazeee and you can get them less sweetened too. The coconut tarts here are really good too - it's hella buttery. Omg, almost forgot about their BBQ pork puff pastries... they're legit delishhhh and way better than the ones you get at dim sum. Some of their "innovative" items like... pumpkin paste filled buns or purple rice filled buns are no bueno. I would skip those. It's around under $1.50 for 3 mini buns. This place isn't "non Chinese" friendly. I don't speak Chinese but luckily for me I know what I want so I just tell them. Tiny dingy nondescript Chinese bakery in a small Chinese mall within a sea of Scarborough Chinese malls that characterizes the Agincourt neighbourhood. Even pre-pandemic era, lineups running through the mall's corridor appears to be the norm for Fragrant Bakery. So small you could only have 1-2 shoppers at a time. The usual Chinese bakery fares like egg tarts and bo lo bao are here from the self-serve displays, though they look a bit smaller than what I'm used to with most bakeries. It seems a big draw is their lo poh banh ("wife cakes"), which are usually on a mobile rack. I find them very flakey with a soft bouncy filling. It's all Canto, it's all no-nonsense service (great if you want to practice for a trip to Hong Kong), the shop ladies expects to get you through and out so best to know what you want beforehand, especially with the 'wife cakes' and other rack sells. read more

I didn't know this but apparently this place has some of the best Chinese egg tarts in the Toronto area! It was a Sunday afternoon but there was a long line up out the door of the bakery-- I realized mostly for their egg tarts! My family told me that this place is known for those and if you don't get there early enough they will run out! The egg tarts themselves are large and delicious and very reasonably priced. Best thousand layer egg tart. Often they are sold out so you have to wait. Also some of the best old wife biscuit. It also comes in half sugar which is great for the older population. Both regular and half sugar old wife biscuits are so good. Again they run out quickly. Once again I brave this ghetto of a plaza in search of good eats and much like an oasis in a dessert lies Fragrant Bakery, a true diamond in the rough. How the heck can a tiny little joint survive in such a crappy little mall? Good food that's how. There is almost always a line up of people waiting for their prized Wife's Pastry and its corresponding Husband's Pastry. Due to the constant flow of people coming in, they are always warm when you get them and oh so good! The wife is sweet and the husband salty which my better half would say is appropriate;). These really are the best in the GTA and are a great deal at $1.20 and $1.10 each. They also do a great job on the egg tarts, buns and cakes but you would be missing out on these pastries if you don't try them. To be honest I usually just grab those pastries as they are that good. You really can't judge a book by it's cover. If I was just walking by this bakery I wouldn't think to stop in (well, maybe I would, they do get a crowd). It's a very small storefront and not super well-lit. Thankfully the great yelp reviews drew me here and now every time I'm in the Toronto area I have to stop by and get a bunch of dantats to go. Their dantats are perfectly flaky and not overly sweet. Well sized and well priced as well. I have also brought back other bakery items like laopobing and napolun for my parents and they said those were the best tasting baked goods they've had from Toronto. Excellent sweetheart cakes/ lou por beng. It is a very small place so you may have to wait on the weekends due to Covid unless you are there early. But don't like being first in line just in case they sell me day-old cake. Pro tip - I go a day before to order a very big order for my trips to  Montreal. Everything shjould be ready when you arrive. - pack/order by the 10, they fit perfectly in a small box. Their wife cake is good but it is getting smaller while they raised their price by 20-30%? The owner and the staff will give you attitude even when you try to make purchases in store. Their egg tart is not bad. The thing is that they have poor packaging. They always try to squeeze everything into the tiny box or else they would just put in the bag. The tart and the cake are always crushed by their poor packaging. Unpleasant service and packaging. Decided to try this bakery out, due to their Yelp rating, and I was not disappointed! I'm glad I came here today! The place is really small and always busy! There is a constant flow of customers. There is no place to sit in. You just order food and go! :) Wanting to try their cakes, I decided to get their mango cake as I have been trying many bakeries in the area and comparing mango cakes (as you can notice in my recent photo feed), and hopefully finding the best-tasting one. Their mango cake is very cheap! It only cost $4.50 and it is bigger than a slice of cake. It is a mini mango cake. This by far is the cheapest one and in my opinion, second in rank after Bakery Nakamura's mango mousse cake when it comes to flavor and price. The mango cake is soft, light, and tasty! It is a bit on the sweeter side, so a small slice is good enough. It is almost as sweet as a Japanese cheesecake with a hint of mango. Who doesn't love a Chinese Egg Tart? While I usually go for the Portuguese version at other Chinese bakeries that always disappoint me with their so-called Chinese Egg Tarts... I come specifically to Fragrant Bakery for their Chinese Egg Tarts! It can be a bit of a battle sometimes, especially if you go during peak nursing home visiting hours (Yee Hong is right next door) where you literally have to take up your swords to vie for one of their yummy egg tarts! They sell out fast! Their egg tart is the perfect mix of a crusty, flaky tart shell and a smooth, sugary and sweet custard filling. Other favorites are the "Wife Cake" aka a sweet white melon-filled pancake. A bit embarrassing to eat if you're on a date as the moment you bite into it the flaky top layer will explode.... You'll have to order 10 days in advance. While stopping in the shop, I noticed there were newspapers about their famous husband and wife cake. It looks really crappy inside and hidden in a run down plaza but in a few minutes they place was packed and people were lining up outside. They have fresh husband cakes daily and their egg tarts are deliciously sweet not bland.
