These patients sing praises about Forte, from the doctors to the nurses to the efficient people at the front desk. From a visitor's point of view, Forte is great. They are very straightforward with their instructions, which I appreciate. Just tell me what to do and what to expect, and I'll do it and expect it. Everything went pretty much according to what they said. They have a smoothly running system here. Visitors can help themselves to the unlimited coffee and water at the coffee and water station. This is where the Little Free Library is located! The waiting room also has multiple seating arrangements, from high-top desks to comfy chairs to love seats. Or, if you need something to eat or drink, there's a cafe on the first floor. (See my separate review for La Verna Cafe.) The waiting room is airy and bright. One thing that's kinda weird is that a "cruise director" comes and talks about what to expect with your surgery ... right in the waiting room, among all those random people. That seems unusual, right? However, there are private rooms that you're taken to when the time comes to talk about your particular case with the doctor. As a visitor who is not a patient, Forte is great. But I've been told that it's also great being a patient here, so there's that.

My journey into knee replacement started over 30 years ago while in the Marines and started losing cartilage from running. 10 years later, I was having unbearable pain from walking and doing mundane tasks, and went to an orthopedist where I was living in Texas, and was told they needed replacement but I was too young (at the time, the hardware was only good for 7 years). Fast forward to last September, I received several recommendations for Shelbourne Knee Center from my wife's co-workers (my wife is military). Doing some research, Shelbourne is one of the top places the country for this type of thing, and our insurance covered it. I live an hour away from the hospital, so I didn't take this adventure lightly. I was very apprehensive about doing this since I was already in pain and worried that the recovery would be worse. I really had nothing to worry about. Dr. Benner saw me at my appointment, took x-rays and did a physical exam of my knees. They looked pretty bad, bones resting on bones where the cartridge would have been, etc. We made an appointment to replace them in the spring and then COVID hit, cancelling all elective surgeries. So I rescheduled for late May. Yes, both knees at once. In the meantime, I worked with Sarah, the physical therapist, once a month to increase the range of motion in the soft tissue. Yes, physical therapy can be a joy but it is necessary. And Sarah is great, and very knowledgeable. Sarah also gave me exercises to do at home daily. On the day of surgery, I arrived at the hospital at 6 am and checked into the surgery center. They brought me to a pre-op room to get me ready, and then placed me on a gurney and wheeled me to the operating room where I was introduced to the staff that would work on me. Dr. Benner and his PA arrived and discussed what would happen, and then the anesthesiologist had me breath into a mask... The next thing I know, I wake up back in pre-op 3 hours later and was told everything went fine. My lower legs were in a contraption called a Continuous Passive Motion machine (CPM) which slowly moved my legs to keep the knees moving. I would be in this thing for a week. My knees were also encased in a cyrocuff, filled with ice water to reduce the swelling. My wife came in, and I was taken to my room on the 3rd floor. Their philosophy is to rest first after surgery to reduce the swelling. The first 24 hours was on complete bed rest (I had a Foley catheter inserted so I could freely urinate without getting out of bed). The next day, the catheter was removed and I did my first physical therapy session with a hospital physical therapist. The first thing she did was show me how to get out of bed and use a walker. Other than going to the bathroom and doing physical therapy, I was to stay in bed with the CPM and cyrocuff for a week. Dr. Benner came by that afternoon and discussed what they did. Normally a bilateral knee replacement should take 4 hours, but they were able to complete it in 3. My legs were becoming bowlegged due to the joint settling, and they straightened them. They also resurfaced my kneecap. I was also given a nerve block to reduce any pain. Normally, you are discharged the next afternoon after surgery. But after attempting to climb up and down a set of practice stairs (I have steps going into my house), we determined that I should stay another night to gain more strength. And the insurance approved it. I awoke the next day with a little discomfort but surprisingly no pain (the pain meds probably had something to do with that). More physical therapy, where I successfully maneuvered the stairs. Dr. Benner came by again to check up on me, and then we were on the way home. A week later, we were back at Shelbourne where Sarah had me do more physical therapy and gave me more exercises to do at home. More x-rays and another check-up with Dr. Benner, and another appointment for the following week, where Sarah removed the waterproof bandages. They use what is called a Zipline to close the incision, and those were removed 2 weeks later. I was able to stop using the walker after 2 weeks, and now at 5 weeks post surgery, I stopped using a cane. Surprisingly, there has been no pain. I stopped using the prescription pain meds after 10 days. Prior to surgery, I was taking Celebrex (an anti inflammatory) twice a day. Now, I'm taking it once a day along with Tylenol. I highly recommended anyone exploring knee replacement to check out Shelbourne Knee Center. I was dreading it, but the experience so far has been nothing but fantastic.

I originally went to my local (from out of town) orthopedic surgeon to see what was going on with my knee after my surgery. An MRI, a month and 4 appointments later they did not know what was wrong and they wanted to do an exploratory surgery to figure it out. My mother and I decided it was time to get a second opinion and that's how we landed at Shelbourne's. My first appointment in walked a bunch of PT, DRs- they pulled up my MRI and did a quick test of my knee. 5 mins into my appointment (literally)- "you've torn your ACL, when do you want to schedule your surgery?" I was STUNNED! They knew so quick! We scheduled my surgery 1 month later with Dr Shelbourne. With my ACL reconstruction surgery I was back to pitching in softball 3 months later - which is unheard of with this kind of surgery but the Shelbourne method WORKS! Here I am 15 years later at my follow up research appointment with absolutely no complaints or issues! I highly recommend Shelbourne Knee Center to anyone with knee issues!

I feel kind of silly "reviewing" a medical practice but these guys saved my mobility. I'm 45 and…read moreruptured my quad tendon as we were loading up my daughter's stuff for her sophomore year of college. Apparently every movement of my body was tied in through this tendon because I couldn't walk, and when I tried I would collapse. Within a day of the examination I was in surgery. Within a week of surgery i was out of the immobilizer and into a mega-robo-brace AND WALKING. Sure it was with crutches but I could already use myles and flex my quad muscle. I am now working with PT to strengthen but less then a month post-op I am walking without crutches but still with my leg brace. Amazing I had two really rough days of pain after the surgery, but they're careful to send you home with just the right amount of pain medication. Dr. Rettig was assigned to me but you could also recognize him on the sidelines with the Colts as their ortho specialist. When I was in surgery recovery, I was next door to a Raiders tight-end (who shall remain nameless). Amazing experience. Amazing group of professionals.

They responded to my request the next day and then offered to book me in for the following week. Amazing, considering how popular they are! Once my appointment was booked, I was emailed a form to fill out digitally before arrival. It helped me prep for the appointment and it was nice to get my insurance info squared away before visiting. They also sent reminder texts and emails, and sent me a COVID screening the morning of the appointment (mini online quiz to say if you'd been feeling sick or not). It was all very seamless! When I visited the office, they checked me in right away and I was brought back right at my appointment time. A PA named Kyler came in to assess my knees and she was super awesome and helpful. I was then brought back for knee x-rays and the x-ray women were SO nice too. As soon as I was brought out of the x-ray room, an attendant brought me back to my room and Dr. Shook came in to assess. He delivered good news (yay!) and was so kind and helpful. He communicated very clearly, seemed very patient, and was open to any questions. He printed off exercises for me to do at home and the attendant brought me to check out. All seven or so people that I interacted with were so friendly and sharp. The whole appointment was very efficient and Dr. Shook seemed to know everyone by name. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!

A hyper efficient operation with hardly any waiting...everyone did their job with the utmost professionalism, care, and with good humor. I am not always easy to deal with...and strangely not everyone gets, or is appreciative of.....my humor. Everyone here did so with enthusiastic alacrity....and were parrying quite well with their own snarky remarks. Dr. Shelbourne examined my knee thoroughly and without making me scream like a little girl...thanks ! I left with confidence my knee would get better and hold up...this was quite important to me at this particular time as it is when I put together my ski trips...which are damn expensive...and the minor investment in time and $$ was well worth it to be fairly sure that I would be in reasonable ski shape this season. This is one of two locations serving as home to three wonderful orthopedic doctors. The staff is very courteous and professional. They have a system, that every patient has access to, where they can send messages, request prescription refills, hold a virtual visit, check/request appointments and make payments. I had an elbow set back and doctor Armington was very knowledgeable, informative and supportive. He got my plan started almost immediately. Anytime you have a orthopedic issue, there is a level of anxiety, nervousness, and anxiousness. It is a huge decision to make. His physical assessments of my ruined hip were thorough, both times I saw him in his office. Today, Dr. Martin gave me a shiny new titanium hip! He came to talk to me before and afterward -- the surgery took less than an hour (he's done a LOT of these surgeries), and he said it went smoothly. (My anesthesiologist, Dr. Fritch, was awesome -- she explained everything in medical terms, as requested, as I have a medical education.) Dr. Martin asked me if I had any questions, both before and after surgery, but honestly, the nursing team had explained everything so well -- with written copies of everything -- that I didn't. He showed me pics of my ex-hip... it looked as bad as it felt. And then he shook my hand and told me he'd see me soon. (The nursing staff verified that I had my first follow-up appointment scheduled.) Three hours after they wheeled me into surgery, I went home in His Goatness's care. The licensed physiotherapist got me up and worked with me on the proper way to stand, sit, walk, sleep, etc, so my hip can heal without complications. While I was a bit groggy from anesthesia, there were no side effects. I recall the discharge instructions clearly. My main care nurse gave me a hug (we were all vaccinated and masked). So now I am home, comfy, fed, and cat-covered. I am impressed, Dr. Martin.

I did more damage to my ankle by continuing to drive a manual 5 speed for 4 days. I think he is by far the best ortho Dr I've encountered. The Anesthesiologist was reassuring and very thorough. The nurses treated me like a queen. I have worked clerically in hospital environment for over 20 years and the gentleman that put on my splint was the best cast technician I've encountered. Overall the Ortho Indy team deserves an A+. I wish I had gone to them for my hip replacement. I won't go anywhere else.
