Me entire family went hiking together and it was beautiful!! The views, the climb, the weather, everything. It was never overly crowded, so we were able to make quick stops along the hike for a snack or to take pics or even just stop to take in the view without feeling like a disturbance to anyone trying to pass. Hiking around Flume Gorge was also pretty lengthy which made for a camera roll loaded with pictures and a tired Sophie by the end of it. :) Such a fun place to check out. Happy Earth Day again. You thought I was finished? HA! Words fail to describe my love of Franconia. I am a Dartmouth alum - not one of the rich ones lmao so I did not have a car at college. If I did tho, you couldn't have pulled me away from the beauty of the White Mountains. I am however one of the old alums so I remember when there used to be an Old Man of the Mountain before his nose fell off lol. Anyways, this place has my entire heart and I only share it with people I trust. I took my friend here for a weekend getaway of rustic camping and hiking last April and I can safely say she also fell in love. We ran up and down I-93, I showed her the remnants of the Old Man, we stopped by the lake (lord it was cold), then we went to the Basin - beautiful in ALL seasons - and hiked a trail on-site. God I love Franconia so much. If you haven't gotten the chance to visit please make it a priority. It's stunning in all seasons! Things to know: -you can access The Basin from either side of 93. If on the far side you just need to cross under the overpass. -The Basin is paved. There are some stairs to get a closer look but it is largely accessible to view. -Still snow in some sections in late April - you're ok without spikes imo -parking was still free as of last year read more

Went hiking today with some friends in the rain to see the Flume George trail..gotta say i think the rain made for a spectacular view. I was worried we wouldnt be able to see a whole lot of greenery since its October and it may have started to fade; but the falls were perfect and everything was so lush. We came at an earlier time so the fog rolled into the trails making everything so mystical and was great for some pictures. I even got to see a few landmarks and enjoy the overlooks of all the beautiful NH trees changing color. It was my first time today visiting NH and it was breathtaking; views from back home are not anything like this during the fall- i was so in love, Franconia Notch was definitely worth the visit. I look forward to coming back again. Little hint to those who plan to visit be prepared. Look at weather conditions for that day and plan adequately. Take lots of water, appropriate shoes, portable battery, appropriate coats/layers depending on season, and a couple light snacks if you need. And your camera. Also, there is a fee that isbeasier to pay for tickets once you get there- its on the state park website, it'll show you the appropriate fees and trails that are open during that time. Fraconia Notch is a MUST. I'm a pretty avid biker and I like to bike whenever I travel. The bike trail at Fraconia Notch is probably the best trail that I've ridden on. Park by the Flume Gorge. There is a large parking lot with plenty of spaces. At the start of the trail there is a map that clearly outlines the trail. The entire ride is 18 miles RT. If you park by the gorge you'll hit the steepest part on the way up. It's pretty challenging and we definitely had to hop off our bikes here and there. But I think it's better to get the harder leg out of the way first, and because the entire stretch back is downhill you'll absolutely fly. The trail is clearly marked and you'll pass all of the hits along the way including the basin, the old man and the mountain and echo lake. After Echo Lake my suggestion is to turn around. Otherwise you'll bike a mile downhill (without much to see) just to bike uphill again. Instead we actually parked our bikes and hiked the Artist Bluff Trail. I totally suggest doing that if you are up for it! I'd also suggest stopping at Echo Lake for lunch and a rest. Because of Covid you'll need to make advanced reservations. The lake was all filled when we got there, but we were able to find a nice scenic lookout point to enjoy lunch. Speaking of lunch -- it's a long bike ride and there aren't food options along the way. Be sure to pack snacks and plenty of water. We ran out of water and luckily were able to snag some at the Echo Lake snack shop. Otherwise there would have been trouble. It was HAWT. If you park at the Flume you can take a tour of it before or after your bike ride, which I totally suggest. There are of course plenty of hiking trails (or you can hike the whole bike trail) but if you are into riding I strongly suggest bringing your bike. The scenery is breathtaking 100% of the time and I promise it's worth it. read more

This place is beautiful. This is my second time in this area. We took the Falling Waters trail. There are some points where you are hugging some rocks and scaling them. There are spots where we had to come down using our butts. The waterfalls are beautiful. We did not go to the top because the wind gusts were reported to be up to 70 mph. read more

This is a beautiful park to drive through or to hike at. We were on our way to Santas Village so we didn't take the time to do any hiking. It was also 11° out so we weren't inclined to be outside anymore than we knew we would be when we got to see in his village. But in every season this park is absolutely gorgeous. It's worth a drive just to go stop at the scenic areas and enjoy the view. read more

We stayed nearby (just north of Lincoln) and were literally within 5 minutes of this park. We went in the morning shortly after they opened, as there was rain moving in later. If possible, I'd definitely recommend going when the fall leaves are turning, as it was quite stunning then. The entrance to the park is just before Hwy 3 merges into I-93. They have extensive parking lots here. It appeared, from the map, that there was a paved multi-use trail running north from here for 5+ miles, but we didn't explore that due to the weather. The visitors' center is a large lodge-style building. They have some exhibits on the park's history and an orientation film (about 15 minutes long). There is also a cafe. You have to purchase tickets to go on the main hike in the park, and it is set up like a theme park ride, i.e. you have to buy the ticket and immediately proceed to the hike. So, round up your group before you get in line. The primary attraction here if Flume Gorge. The overall set-up of the trail is a large ~ equilateral triangle. You first hike up a hill to a large boulder, at which point you can take either of 2 legs of the triangle. The right leg leads down across a covered bridge and then up to the gorge. The trial is either packed dirt/gravel, pavement, or boardwalk. The approach to the gorge is scenic, with a large 'slick rock' water flow. The gorge is very interesting, with the boardwalk hugging the walls and allowing good views of the stream. The hike up is not hard, but it does involve a lot of hill- and stair-climbing. It was a moderate work-out. Once you are beyond the gorge, the trail winds through the woods and starts descending. There are a few spots to explore along the way (shallow caves in the rock, overlooks, etc.). This 2nd leg of the triangle ends at another covered bridge, this one purely for pedestrians. You then begin the remaining descent back to the boulder where the trial originally diverged. I think we spent between 90 minutes and 2 hours on this hike. We still had time to explore the exhibits when we got back before the cafe opened. This was a highly worthwhile place to visit. read more

This park is beautiful. We went during Christmas break and the park was covered in snow. We didn't hike the trains, but went the Basin (loved it). and poked around at the Flume Gorge. We will go again when the weather is warmer to see the rest of the park. Lovely views and it was not crowed (at least during the time we went). read more

Wow!!! What a gorgeous place to visit in the Fall! This state park is pretty big and spans out pretty far along I-93. Most of the exits for different trails and areas of the park are only accessible going one direction on the interstate. So plan ahead and no how to get where you're going. There are a ton of trails in this park for all abilities and sports. Also in this park is the popular Flume Gorge. It may seems like a scary hike, especially if you do the entire 2 miles around and back to the visitors center. But, it is not. I was a little scared to do it with pictures of sooo many stairs to climb, but it was nothing. The stairs are spaced well enough that it is not exhausting. There are several ramps too, instead of stairs, which make it easier. The extra high around is worth it too. We also went to the aerial tram and rode it to the top of the White Mountains overlooking Echo Lake. There is a cafe at the top and a few trails to hike up there. On a nice clear day, it's worth the money to ride up and enjoy the views. read more

All I can say is "WOW!". If you want a challenging day hike with a reward of beautiful scenery this trail is for you :). I was in awe once getting to the top where you have about 2 miles of stunning views as you walk along the ridge. To my coworker who told me the ridge was more or less flat- what a lie!!!! I was expecting to have a leisurely walk across this part of the trail but be prepared because there are three peaks you walk up and down to pass through. A must stop if you love being outdoors and want to enjoy the majestic presidential mountains. There are trails and look outs for every skill level which gives no reason why you can stop or at least drive through. The interstate runs right through this area. We climbed mount Lafayette and the views did not disappoint. I look forward to going back to climb again read more

We had a great time exploring FNSP this fall. It was crowded with tourists, but getting there in the morning was helpful to beat the long lines. When you stop for the aerial tram or the flume gorge, be sure to buy the discover pass for both locations to not only get a discounted combined ticket price but to skip the long wait lines when you get to the second location. At the aerial tram the lines moved quickly & they had big restrooms to use so the lines there weren't long either. Pro tip: wait for the tram at the gate so as soon as they're opened you can go to the back window as these are definitely the best viewing spots out the window. The trams pack in 75 people every 15 min, so you definitely don't want to be stuck in the middle. Once at the summit the trails to the radio tower are a leisurely walk & worth it for the views. There's also a cafe with limited menu, and we liked being able to grab a beverage while soaking in the views. Again, when you take the tram down be sure to get to the gate & then to the back window for the best views. At flume gorge we were glad we had gotten the combined tickets, because during peak leaf season the Saturday line wound it's way through the entire parking lot. We probably saved an hour and a half by getting the combined ticket. This park was a bit crowded at first, but the crowd really spreads out as you begin to walk around. It's a mild to moderate type of hike, so definitely available to all fitness levels. There's even a bus from the main lodge to the flume gorge if you are hesitant to walk it until you get there. read more

We took the cannon trial up to a few waterfalls but ended up having too little time to get to the notch. The view was awesome! One of the waterfalls looked similar to one I saw in Puerto Rico so that was a treat (Yunque rainforest). The trail is on the easy side but there are a few rocks that require a bit of scrambling. Also, some of the rocks are slippery because of the waterfalls. Wear sneakers with good traction or hiking boots! We went up about 3 miles and then went back down because we started way too late in the day (2pm). We spoke to others and it seemed like starting around 9am meant a 4:00pm end which seems reasonable for next time! There weren't a lot of people on the trial so that was nice. We had one little corgi in tow and he LOVED the hike. His little legs were not an issue :). read more

Taken as a whole, Franconia Notch is an impressive area. There are plenty of places for hiking and outdoor sports, but also sites for the non-athletic people to see, places you can take a dip in the water (assuming you have an incredible tolerance for cold), and the drives through the area are quite pleasant. Some of the main attractions will take your money, but you can certainly have a nice day in a variety of ways for a variety of prices. As many will have realized by this point, virtually every state sign in New Hampshire has a profile of the Old Man of the Mountain. This was a rather fascinating rock formation that does look quite a bit like a face when viewed from the right angle. Or it did, anyway. It collapsed over a decade ago. The site below it, Profile Lake is still there, and still has a large parking lot and a memorial of sorts, but it really isn't worth it; instead of a unique symbol, you'll see a McDonald's sponsored bench and not much else. There are, however, plenty of other places worth seeing, and this is a very pleasant area during the summer when other parts of the country are getting intolerable. And you'll rarely ever see a place with more trees. read more

Beautiful! My review of a little late but I went there in the Fall when the leaves were changing and this was my first true New England foilage experience. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, we don't have many leafy trees. This was amazing though! I just love how the park is near the freeway so it's easy to get to however there are so many different places to pull over and walk through trails. The Old Man of the Mountain Memorial site was great as well since I missed seeing the real thing by a couple of decades. Overall a fun visit in the Fall but there were a lot of people to compete with for space. Definitely would return again even in the Summer. read more

Here I am, back in New England for a last-minute, short-but-sweet visit. I grew up in NH and never made it to this amazing state park. Was I crazy? No, just young and naive. I never took advantage of all of New Hampshire's natural beauty. This park is a magical place. The flume gorge and surrounding areas will take your breath away (including "the pool" and 2 adorable covered bridges). Ride the aerial tramway up to the top of Cannon Mountain and and climb to the top of the observation tower. Incredible views! Alas, no more Man in the Mountain! I wonder if the state of NH will change their license plates??? The height of the White Mountains may not measure up to the Rockies or the Sierra, but the scenery, gorges, lakes, rivers, and hiking give Western nature a run for its money! My husband is more of a mountain man, and I'm an ocean woman. So he was very happy on his first trip to the White Mts on our Fall 08 Foliage Tour. The White Mts may not be like the Rockies or the High Sierras of CA, but they are still full of beauty, especially in the Fall! The Basin is an interesting pool of madly swirling water. Nice trails to walk around on. We did the Flume Gorge (review and pics under that title) and Cannon Aerial Tramway. We skipped the Old Man in the Mt since it's just not the same since his face fell off in 2003. Fortunately I'd seen him in the late 80s. Most stops are free, so pack some goodies and enjoy a day walking around and taking in the beauty! read more

Quite excellent state park. Lots to see, do and great many good hiking and biking trails. Here's a review of a few free hiking trails: Falling waters trail - This is part of the Franconia Ridge Loop, which traverses through many beautiful waterfalls from small to large, eventually reaching the Little Haysack Mountain Summit, granting a beautiful view of the entire Franconia park region as well as other neighboring mountain tops. Be prepared to climb slippery rocks, cross the falls while balancing on a wooden log, rather fun and adventurous experience. The second half of the hike from the top of the waterfalls to the Little Haystack Mt. Summit is rather strenuous for the less than experienced hikers, the rise in elevation is rather steep and the trail is composed of rocks which requires some amount of hands and feet to climb. One-way trip is about 3.2 miles and could take up to 3 to 4 hours. It is possible to continue after this trail to reach the summits of mount Lincoln and mount Lafeyette. The trailhead can be found at the Lafeyette Campground. Basin-Cascade Trail - The Basin Cascade Trail is relatively easy. If you have been to the Flume and want something with more resemblance to a natural trail, this is a good trail to do. The trail head starts at The Basin, about a mile or so north from the Flume Gorge, there are waterfall areas with large rocks where you can bring your own picnic, splash your friends with water, or simply admire the beautiful creation of nature. An easy and short hike to Kinsman Falls. Relaxing and scenic hike. The basin itself is beautiful, but lacking in comparison to the other waterfall wonders you will encounter on a deeper hike. The basin is rather small pool of water, with a small fall. I would come here for the trail, but not just the basin. The side trail reaches a small area called the baby flume. read more

There are many perks to city livin' - like having a small carbon footprint, and being able to obtain banana bread and Chai at will - but easy access to nature ain't one of 'em. Sometimes, you have to get out of town. I've now traveled to Franconia Notch Park once, thanks to a native New Hampshirian who recently showed me the sights, but I'm still reaping the sanity-inducing benefits. We began by hiking The Flume trail. I was surprised at the $10 admission fee, since it's a relatively small area to hike, but the trail does include a long network of wooden walkways and historic bridges that likely require more than average maintenance. I felt that this was pricey but worth it; they seem to take conservation of the area seriously, with signs protecting recovering wildlife areas and even a box to recycle used trail maps. I was also glad to see that many elderly people and small children were able make the hike through this blissfully cool, shaded chasm and up into the surrounding foothills, where you can see water rushing down through a deep gorge and out over smooth fins of rock, and later on, peer down from a covered bridge at a scenic waterfall cascading down into a perfectly clear pool of water. At the time of our visit, a early Sept. cold snap had kicked off a splash of autumn color in the foothills, and the colors were amazingly vivid - I'd definitely recommend seeing the park at this time of year. After our hike, we drove out to Attatash amidst a herd of RV's, baby-boomer motorcyclers, and tour buses. The drive was beautiful, but we were disappointed to find that the alpine slide had been disassembled - I remembered this fun summertime ski resort ride from when I was a kid, and hope that I'll make it back before Labor Day next year. We then stopped near Loon and had a bite to eat at Elvio's, which I'm told is a local institution - we gulped down an amazing thick-crust Sicilian pizza with a crust so buttery, flaky and thick that I would have thought it was rolled from brioche dough. We ended our night with two other amazing activities that one certainly cannot do in Boston: 1) we purchased a motorized squirrel from a gas station, and 2) we witnessed a parade of about 600 men wearing plaid skirts, walking and/or dancing down the main street in town (it was during the Highland Festival). This review is for the tram! The tram that will give you one of the best views of NH!! But beware if you are here as a leaf peeper like most--it is way way colder at the top than you think it will be! I felt like there should have been snow at the top of that thing that wind was so bitter cold! But that aside, it is an awesome ride up the side of the mountain that is slow enough for you to take a ton of pictures and take in the scenery of all the trees and lakes around you. The colors are just so so beautiful from up there. The tram could be cheaper, but at least you know your ticket money is going to help maintain this giant state park. There are trails at the top of the tram too, that if you were feeling frisky and had actually worn warm enough clothes, you could just pay for a one-way ticket and hike back down to the bottom. Definitely an option! But not an option we took ha ha And once you get back down, they have a free small ski museum that has some videos you can watch, olympic medals, and more information about the history of skiing than you probably really care about ha ha But it was a pretty cool stop in our New Hampshire leaf peeping trip! read more

I thought when I got to Acadia for the first time (1 day prior to here) that I'd seen the prettiest natural sites I'd ever seen...and in many ways I had but I had to reconsider when we hit Franconia in NH....and the more I think about it the more I lean toward Franconia. It's absolutely gorgeous at every angle and stop. From the tram to the highest peak where you have stunning vistas to the flume which was the prettiest hike I've ever taken. We were there on a cloudy day and park rangers and guides on the tram and at the peak "apologized" for the lack of views (apparently you can see all neighboring states on a clear day) but we thought hiking around the peak as the fog rolled off the mountain was a once in a lifetime experience all on its own. The basin was also well worth our time. Stunning and highly recommended you carve out several hours or a whole day if you are anywhere near this park. One note---it is a lot of walking up and down steep inclines (with plenty of foot room) so you might want to make sure you're in good general shape/fitness before giving this park a go. If you hike down to view the flume---and you SHOULD---there is a trolley to take you back up to the top. Also--buy the pass that combines the tram and the flume as they're both worth seeing and the pass will save you cash. The basin and all other stops on the route are free. read more

My girlfriend and I decided come here for Columbus Day weekend and this place did not disappoint. The flume gorge was simply amazing! Also, the aerial tramway to the top of the mountain view was well worth the price. The view from the top was gorgeous! We only had time to go to two of the park attractions but we will definitely be back for the others. read more

This is such a great state park. Boyfriend and I have been here several times and we always have a great time. There are so many things to see and do there from the Flume Gorge, Basin, Boise Rock, etc. We have seen all this things from the former location of the Old Man in the Mountain to Indian Head. We have been at Echo beach for Kayaking and hiked Lonesome Lake trail. You cant go wrong here- it is beautiful all year long. Even if you don't like to hike you can always find something do to like the tramway that takes you up Cannon Mt. And even then if you don't like nature (who are you!?!?) you can find a craft fair and go shopping in Lincoln or the other towns in the area. read more

I travelled with a 2 1/2 year old so took the easy route- took the cannon mountain aerial tramway up top then did the short walk an the rim trail to the observation tower. Accidentally discovered this place while driving down from Montreal to Boston. I-93 cuts right through the park, and it's well worth the stop. We only had time for the Flume and Tram, but both were fantastic. The Tram car holds about 30-50ppl and gives a spectacular view of the mountain/surrounding areas. On a clear day the guide said you could see upwards of 50miles. We also saw black bears and a Canadian lynx below. Once at the top, there are some hiking trails and an observation tower. Beware of the majestic beauty drawing you off the path - it's so pristine and you'll want to sit on that rock yonder for a picture. I walked the trail in sandals (silly me) but I highly recommend gym shoes with traction or hiking boots. The Flume was even more impressive. It's basically a gorge with 70-90ft walls of granite, Avalanche waterfalls, and some glacial boulders. It's a 3 mile hike, and you'll want to take your time because it's a photographer's dream. Funny how we drove the coast of Maine, saw Quebec City and Montreal, and this spontaneous stop was the prettiest site we saw. read more

The park is a mix of free and paid parts, all of which are beautiful and great hikes for anyone looking for a little adventure. I loved the tramway ($13 or $24 if combined with the Flume Gorge) to reach the top of Cannon Mountain quickly since time was a constraint for us, but you can easily try the 2 mile trail up to the top of the mountain if you wish. There's a nice path with plenty of open viewing areas as well as a path leading up to an old tower where you can look out over the New Hampshire forest area. I can only imagine how beautiful this would be in the fall! Too bad I missed that boat by a month or two... For free things, just look for the signs up and down I-93 in the stretch between the Gorge and the tramway. There's plenty of other trails to explore in the area, dip your feet into the cool water (no really, it's coooooooold), and places to have a picnic to get the energy to hike some of the hillier sections of park. Seriously, you could spend a couple of days in this park alone trying to explore everything, and there even appeared to be a well-cared for bike path running through the area. read more

Beautiful state park. Plently of trails and things to see! I personally loved stopping on all the little spots along the highway. Everything was lovely, even in the early spring. read more

There used to be an attraction called Old Man on the Mountain, but it's rock formation broke off in 2003. The parkway is a scenic route, and it should have at least four lanes, so that drivers can pass slow-moving vehicles. read more
