Uniquely bold with a strong sense of identity. Stepping in felt surreal and the presentation was everything. Will note that the handle of the faucet fell off when I used it and I had let the staff know. It's a simple grub screw to get it back in place! As I consider an overall rating, I am indecisive between a 3 and 4. Dining here on my final night was my Plan B. I was fortunate there was space available at their communal bench because I did not have a reservation. The fact it was by their window was a plus. Unfortunately, their rusty decor meant the table had a large crack at the end where I sat. The menu is very interesting as I had not come across anything similar earlier in the week. The menu offers the option to order small- or large-sized plates of most items. When dining with a group, customers have the option to order several small plates to be shared. As I was dining alone, I chose the large plate of the hanger steak. I was happy to hear the steak would have been cooked medium rare unless I requested something else. I was strongly suggested to order a vegetable dish since these plates do not come with any sides. I chose the spiced cauliflower. While waiting for my order, I was given some spiced nuts. I had to be careful as I could have easily ruined my appetite eating them. Fortunately, my order did not take too long to arrive. Both the steak and the cauliflower were cooked as expected. During my dinner, my waitress had come by at the time I was sipping my wine. I was focus my attention on her as I was putting my glass away. I must have placed it on the crack because a second later it fell on its side with the remaining wine. I did not accept the offer for another glass. Since I would not have finished an entire glass, the wine would have been wasted. As it was my final night, I definitely wanted to have dessert. Pricey yet priceless. Last day in Hobart, I was looking for something memorable. Frank definitely made an impression. First off, the server graciously accepted my request to have 1/2 glass of wine in order to taste all local tassie grapes. I am normally a red drinker but the two whites I tried was very charming... especially the orange pinor gris! Love how they cook their veggies! your mom will be proud. I had the charred zucchini, more on a salty side and very filling. Love the crème sauce under it and a touch of mint and pickles. Cauliflower will always be a stable for me but they had been well touched with whipped feta and mustard green? among many many veggie side dish options, I took the server's suggestion and chosed this guy amonst the bussle sprouts, leeks and eggplant purees (just some buzz words on the menu). Let's start with the positives: easy to book online, great location and food was very tasty. Highlight was the roasted potatoes and the fresh oysters. Negatives: service was absolutely shocking. We were seated quickly, our first drink came quickly and our starters came quick. Not once (even after taking our glasses) were we offered the opportunity to order more drinks, although my partner and I wanted at least one or two more. Our mains came out 1.5 hours after we ordered. We spoke to the manager to pass on her feedback and was told 'we are short staffed tonight'. Sorry but it's a Monday night and tables around us were being treated a lot better. We finally had enough and left. No offer of a coffee / dessert or an apology, just 'thanks for your feedback'. And for $150 for two people, we barely got enough food to feed both of us. We left hungry and a bit annoyed by the experience. read more

I didn't think I would be posting anything from Tasmania yet but business calls and after arriving late in Hobart I was invited to the end of a Tasmanian team dinner at an Argentinean inspired restaurant. I ordered the lamb shoulder and crisp potatoes in cultures cream. I am really sorry I ate the airport food on the way down as the lamb and potatoes were excellent. Frank feels like somewhere you need an excuse to visit. So I used my birthday as that excuse just recently and booked a table for ten a couple of weeks in advance, just to be safe. Good idea, it may have been a Sunday night but the place was HOPPING. And humming. Frank literally buzzes; it's somewhat disguised, existing in the bottom floor of what looks like a corporate building, you don't really look at the building and think, "Ah, that's where that awesome restaurant must be"--but if you're listening, you'll hear the buzzing of happy voices beaming out of there. Walk through the big gold doors on the Argyle St/Mawson Place side, or the side doors on the Franklin Wharf side. Welcome to Frank. When I walked in on that Sunday night, I saw a big table surrounded by a cage, basically. It looked awesome. I tried not to get my hopes up but I could have gone ahead and done so because it was totally my table. HOORAY! CAGE TABLE! We had a dedicated waiter all night, and let me take this opportunity to say thank you, Thomas, and sorry, Thomas. Thomas was very sweet and occasionally hard of hearing but all to our amusement. Thomas did a wonderful job protecting a couple of my guests with allergies from the things that could have killed them, and he was also up to the challenge of us saying, "feed us for $50 per person, please, we're not very good with decisions". Our table was, at one point, so covered with food that there was barely an inch of space left. So much food. An exceptional amount of food for a table of people very excited about eating. Some of the dishes were average, some were good, some were GREAT. Pretty much every dessert was brilliant. Every drink was exceptional. We were at dinner for at least four hours so again, I'm sorry, Thomas and Frank but well done. Very good. Would Frank again. read more

This was profoundly disappointing. 6 hungry men opted for the "feed me" option at $ 75 per head. For a supposed "Argentinian" restaurant this option proved tragically short of red meat. The mains comprised a large serving of their skirt steak which was a tad chewy and rather unexciting. The roast chook that came shortly afterwards was pale and bland, and was paired with an equally dull and wet salad. We were also plied with way too many vegetable dishes, leading to the unfortunate conclusion that the restaurant had well and truly screwed us. It was quite the rip-off. The final slap in the face was being offered a half serving of dessert each. Unreal. The place was otherwise OK: the bar man made us some excellent cocktails, and the wine selection was reasonable. Our advice: if you really must try this place under no circumstances allow them the opportunity to rip you off, and go with à-la-carte. read more

Really impressed. Good service, good food. We were a large group (15) and the waitress recommended that we tell her a price per head and she would take care of the rest. We happily did that, and got a heap of delicious dishes - oysters, ceviche, chicken, steak, potato, sweet potato, empanadas... And more. Thoroughly enjoyed everything. Wine list is nice but there aren't any "affordable" options (cheapest champagne was $46 which, for Hobart places, is unusual) although that is probably a good thing - why pair such delicious food with cheap booze anyway! Cocktails were also ordered and were delicious - espresso martini was god damn delicious and I would go back just for those (although I have not checked my bank statement so may revisit that idea soon...) The only thing is that the poor staff have to wear these horrible weird grey smock type things. Seriously, they are AWFUL and should be burned immediately and replaced by something not hideous. read more

Down on a long weekend of our own making, we had heard of Frank previously and decided to give it a go so booked some weeks in advance. On the night, we rocked up in 3C degree weather and it was warm and welcoming inside. While the hostess was ambivalent, all the other staff were absolutely great. Friendly, informative and giving great advice on the food. The food was inspired - or a least it was for us - south american roots and some really unique flavours. The chimichurri sauce was divine on the flank steak and the grilled vegetables had a strong vinegar flavour we loved. When we're next down in Hobart we'll definitely try Frank again. read more

Food = 5 stars Service = 3.5 stars Decor = 0 stars Frank is not frank: nothing open or straightforward about the place. A better name would have been Aunt Blackbeard's. The aesthetic is a Dalí-esque mash up of 90's grunge, tea lady, tattoo parlour + laser tag -- which may sound exciting, but comes off bland, disorienting, and - frankly - ugly. Caged tables, graffiti, giant black doilies on the ceiling, a huge hanging torch, rams-headed shakespearean spectres in the toilets -- someone was trying to be edgy, but the effect is flat and confused. A more Ethos-like atmosphere, with frank presentation - simple + honest - would have served the food much better. Staff is similarly "on trend." 4 out of six male waiters sported a beard +/or man-bun. Female waters in mom-jeans. Added to the distinct impression this place won't last more than a few years, till the fads it's channelling fade and somewhere else is ascendant. Not made to last. As for the service itself, the folks were polite and friendly, but made a number of errors and were very slow. The food is fantastic, as others have noted, and nearly redeems the place, were the decor not so ugly. The ideal audience appears to be bored, childless couples pretending to be half their age, and bored 20-something, flannel + sleeve-tattoo sporting hipsters. If that's not you, or if that is you and you're even the tiniest bit agrarian and like your food to be truly frank, Frank is not for you. Once was enough for us. When the trend passes, we'll be keen to see what the next owners do with the place. Tip: keep the chef, and the pork rib. read more

The food wasn't bad per se but not great either. Very expensive and not good enough to justify the price tag. The steak was cooked well but the chimichurri sauce was just oil with flecks of green, not a proper sauce. I asked what cheese they have for the cheese plate and they checked; I picked one of the 3 options. They came back later and said they didn't have what I'd ordered. Fine, I take their recommendation for one of the other two. The things that came with the cheese plate were very sweet and didn't really balance well. It was a tiny slice of cheese so if you order a cheese plate because you want cheese, you may be disappointed. The recommended grilled(?) veggies were good but again, pricey. read more

Delicious Argentinian inspired food, great atmosphere and excellent service make this place a winner. I dined at Franks solo this week and was impressed with the friendly and efficient service, which is often deficient for lone diners. The hangar steak was tender, smoky and cooked to perfection. A side dish of charred sweet potato, goat curd, coriander and almonds was delicious. Leave room for the bbq banana and caramel ice cream. Wines by the glass were reasonably priced and the window bench overlooking Hobart marina gave great views and people watching. read more

Completely overrated. From the awful table in front of the kitchen door, with the flouro constantly flashing, to the too wide tables, green vinyl bench seats and unmovable chairs and the try hard waiters, there is nothing to see here, The food at best was patchy, the venison ribs were very good, the vegetables were very average, smoked salmon looked and tasted straight out of a supermarket packet, The saving grace was the oysters which were fantastic. We were in and out in an hour, that tells you something. read more

Had the itching for a "fancy" dinner so the wife and I ended up in this trendy restaurant by the wharf. We ordered the grilled pickles, two scallop empanadas, smoked chorizitos and Tasmanian salmon. Now, I like pickles but the grilled pickles here were so overpoweringly sour it may have ruined the rest of the meal for me. The scallop empanadas were ok, if slightly bland, and the smoked chorizitos were nice and spicy but also tasted slightly sour which dampened my enthusiasm for them. The Tasmanian salmon was just fine and thankfully was the lasting taste in my mouth as we finished our meal. If the only thing we had was the salmon I'd have had a much better experience, and thus review, of the place but even discounting the grilled pickles the other two dishes didn't really stand out. We were strongly recommended Frank to try the South american inspired food, as we have a Latin American food stall ourselves. Unlike many restaurants which are horribly pretentious in Hobart, the menu was nothing of sorts. It was rustic and simple, elegant and definitely delivered. Fresh, very "criolle" food, simple and authentic. Our pork was slightly undercooked, but everything else was spot on. Unfortunately the service was quite impersonal and we didn't even get offered dessert, which was very disappointing. We didn't even get greeted goodbye, at some point we became invisible, so much that the waitresses passed by me and didn't even looked, even as I was getting ready to leave while my parner paid the bill. He wasn't even ask how the evening went, which tells a lot about a restaurant. Not pretentious in the menu, but quite so in personality. read more
