Here's what we noticed: - A tour guy had told us that Mures Upoer Deck would be the same food as on the lower level, just pricier, but I don't think that is true. The menu was very broad, there's great cocktails, and a comprehensive wine list, and food that you can't get in the more fast food-like atmosphere down below. - We had a reservation and when we arrived, the place was practically empty. They seated us at a table by the window; the views were beautiful. - We decided to order cocktails off their cocktail menu, although some of the cocktails were supposed to be smoked and the server said their smoker wasn't working. We got them anyway and they were very nice. - We decided to start with a few oysters and the octopus salad. Both were really tasty. For our main course, my wife and I split the full flathead fish, which seemed to be a special that day. When it came out, we asked our server how to cut it, and he said he had never done it before so he didn't know himself, but that the chef cuts down the middle so that's what we did. The fish was really nicely done, and the other items on the plate added to it all very well. - Service was pretty good, but as I've noted, our server didn't seem to be very experienced, coming by our table way too much to check in. I think at some point he got the message. I wanted to just eat my dinner. I'd seen so many photos of the hip fitout that I had my assumptions about the menu, and those assumptions were way off. What St Albi is, secretly, but far more accessibly for the locals, is a gastropub. The menu is tried and true pub style, fancied up around the edges. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, and once my dining pal and I had gotten our heads around this, our meals were awesome. I'd go so far as to say my steak was the best steak I've had in Hobart. Yep, I'm gonna make that call. But having said that, I didn't head to St Albi that night expecting to eat a steak. My friend and I started with an entree and a half each, because we both needed to try the chowder but also another thing each. The chowder was out of this world delicious, and I'm pretty sure it had some sage in it (or just the right combination of other herbs and spices that tricked me into thinking it was sage), but I've been back since just for the chowder and it didn't have quite that same flavour to it. I was a little disappointed, but the chowder is still super, super delicious and comes with an enormous prawn hanging out in it (entertaining but awkward to eat, nobody look at me please). I won mains hands down with my steak, which I forced my friend to try as well (ok I didn't have to force her very hard). I chose the Cox coffee rub for it because I was intrigued. I chose medium rare because that's how steak should be cooked. And I chose some duck fat potatoes and honey brown mushrooms for sides because I couldn't not. Seriously, so good. But so much food. Because this is a gastropub, not a fine dining restaurant. If someone had explained this to me before I went, maybe I wouldn't have had 1.5 entrees before my enormous main, leaving less than zero room for my dessert (yes, even my dessert stomach abandoned me) and giving me actual pains because I was so full (and yet still got most of my sides to take away and devour the following day with some scrambled eggs because I'm a genius). I didn't do a lot of research about eateries prior to visiting to Hobart. Instead, I decided to walk around the area and see which places piqued my interest. Walked over to Salamanca Place as there are plenty of restaurants in this area. Along the way I stumbled across Waterman's on my walk through the neighborhood. I was looking for a low-key spot and this fit the bill, so I decided to give a try. Waterman's is a beer bar/pub specializing in craft and small batch brews. Particularly of interest for me were the Tasmanian beer offerings here. The location itself is appealing as it is in an old sandstone building so the interior has a history behind it. The layout of the place consists of a main bar area in which you order your beers and food from. As for seating, there are numerous seating booths here with a wall installation illuminating light. The beers on offer are posted on a board above the bar. There is a nice array of different types of beers to choose from here. You can find the list of what is available currently on their website. In general, beer seems to be a bit more pricey in Australia and this is no different here. Though I like that they offer a smaller size than the standard pint. This is good as it allows you to try more than one beer at a time here. In addition to their beers, the pub has a food menu which includes pizza, schnitzel, brats and pub entrees (Australian name for appetizers). For dinner here, I decided to get a Bah Bah pizza ($15.90) and paired it with a 10 ounce Van Dieman Stout ($8). The stout is a dark brew and it was on the bitter side. More so than I was expecting. But fortunately the pizza helped to cope with the bitterness. The pizza portion size was huge and filling. And it had an interesting combination of ingredients including slow cooked lamb, dukkah, roasted pumpkin and feta. The lamb was tasty and had a sausage like texture. As a whole, the flavors of the pizza really go well together. Dukkah is something I have never seen before on a menu. Turns out it is a spice mix which reminds me of spices like cumin and turmeric. If you like Mediterranean food, I think you will enjoy this as it is like eating a pizza version of a gyro. If you are looking to try out different varieties of Tasmanian beers in one place while in Hobart, Waterman's is a good place to check out. I recommend getting one of the pizzas here to pair with the beer as they are sizable and delicious.

They have plenty of games to play and a lively atmosphere, but perhaps the best treat is that men's urinals are built into a wall with one-way mirrors, so you can actually see the folks in the outside area and enjoy them having a beer right across from where you are standing. Then came this beautiful peppercorn encrusted hunk of meat covered with a wonderful pepper sauce. Yes, the sauce made the steak. The meat was of average quality, had some gristle throughout it. The price as very reasonable so I can't complain. I would order it again. The steak was perfectly cooked as requested. The steak was served with a side of potatoes and carrots. We didn't need the onion rings but they were a great addition. Atmosphere was more of a family type restaurant. Service was very good. Highly recommend making a booking in advance.

We ordered drinks, bread and our meal minutes after we were seated. The drinks were delivered very quickly and the some bread came soon after, and then we didn't get to order more drinks for close to another 1hr and 20mins from when we were seated. We sat there watching tables around us getting served several times, in fact some tables rotated customers out and more arrived. Its disappointing to seat tables served their meals and drinks several times, mire people be seated and severed drinks a few more times. I felt like I had gained a new superpower and become invisible!! Terrible service!! If you're coming here for dinner, its easier to just put your breakfast order in!! I spoke to the manager when leaving and he apologised and then just struggled his shoulders. I explained it wasn't the servers fault, she was overwhelmed with the number of tables she was given. The manager didn't care about my feedback with a terrible attitude, zero empathy and brushed me off when I requested this be escalated to the restaurant manager and owner. He was very dismissive and rude. It's a pity, my previous visit to the Ball & Chain was great.
