FDR park is a spacious 960 acre park. This open park has nice trails for long walks, jogging, and bicycling. There are basketball courts, fields for playing soccer or softball, and a children's playground. I could not believe the many areas for barbecuing with plenty of picnic tables, charcoal grills, and some areas even had volleyball nets,. Perfect for cookouts, and nice pavilions for events. There is also a beautiful scenic lake where you can rent row boats, and fish. It is also home to the largest pool of all New York State parks that can accommodate 3,500 people. read more

Excellent park, the disc golf course is great. Now if everyone that the park would clean up after themselves, it would be a far better place to be. People are walking their dogs and leaving their half-empty coffee cups all over, tossing single-use plastic bottles wherever they want, leaving packaged food wrappers to blow away in the wind, and having the audacity to pick up their dog's poop with poop bags only to leave the tied off bags laying on the ground. This park is for public use, and on top of that, is inhabited by many wild animals. This is their home, and park patrons are literally trashing it. Please be more considerate of your environmental impact by reducing your waste through use of reusable cups/bottles, and leave the space you occupy looking better than it was when you found it. Otherwise, stay home and trash your own house. read more

This park is bigger than you think and it takes longer to walk it then you would assume. It's a great spot to rent the small gazebos for events but make sure you book them in advance because they get filled up quickly. The grounds have all different sports like equipment you can use and they even have a pool and boating on the lake in the warmer months. I thoroughly enjoy spending fall afternoons especially here bc of the foliage and it's an awesome spot to host your own Oktoberfest read more

I came here twice with friends. It is a great park to visit in the fall. It's less than 1 hour drive from NYC. I think the fee was $10 per car. There are plenty of autumn leaves showing off their bright hues. Some trails are paved, others are marked foot paths in the woods. They are not intense at all. Even this city gal did well! We walked a trail around the large lake. It wasn't too long. We were in and out within 2 hours. I saw some baskets, and my friend's husband that they're for frisbee golf. There are also barbecue areas, and we found a fireplace. :-) The water wasn't running the bathroom, so I recommend you bring hand sanitizer. read more

I have been coming to this park my whole life! It's about 3 miles around. Perfect for bike riding and walking or have your own cookout and party. Plenty of space and bbq grills. Very quiet and safe! Seems a lil awkward rating a park since its nature, lol! Like how do you rate nature? Well, here goes-- 2nd time here this summer, I like it. The upkeep is on point. Nice greenery. Beautiful trees- so pleasing to sit and just look at them. Enough tables, benches and grills for everyone. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Great work, park staff. Made for a nice day outdoors and I came home with a glowing tan. Parks in more urban areas can def model after this one. Guess it's up to our communities to implement and demand that. read more

This review is geared specifically towards the pool facility. The park itself is nice. Open, peaceful trails to walk (or run). Scenic lake. Now albeit, stopped at the pool during a complete heat wave and it was truly at capacity. I've never seen more people in one body of water in my life. It seems this is a staple for many families living not only locally but in the city as well. The pool itself was gross. A lot of dirt/debris floating around. An oil like slick on the water. Lifeguards were on top of things. It was literally like a can of sardines. The bathrooms were gross (though most beach/pool bathrooms are). After waiting on line to get in to the park for ~20 mins, had to stand on a line to pay the $3 pool entrance fee for around ~30-40 mins. If you're coming during peak season or on a summer weekend, arrive early and be prepared to wait on line. No major outside food/drink. The family in front of me was instructed to get rid of their sandwiches/bags of chips/drinks. They want you to buy from the concession. After a few hours, there was still a line of people waiting to get in. read more

POOL REVIEW ONLY..Pool is horrible! They only let u go into smaller sections of the pool so that you are all cramped up in one section! The crowd is horrible everyone is loud and obnoxious! Not a bad park, I came with some friends in winter and we walked around the mostly frozen lakes on the mostly not-snowy paved roads. There's a lot of parking (or maybe I thought so because nobody else was around), and apparently there's a swimming pool big enough to hold 3000+ people. It was really relaxing to walk around, but I guess there wasn't a lot to do. Trees were pretty bare as it was winter, but it was still nice to walk around! read more

Went on Saturday after the 4th. At 12pm there were only a few cars on line to get in. The pool is huge. There were a lot of people there but it really didn't seem like it. Went up to check out the pool and compare it to Rockland Lake State Park (across the river). To be honest, FDR is perfectly fine. However, I liked Rockland Lake better because of the landscape and path around the lake. FDR doesn't let you walk close to their lake aside from where boat permit holders are allowed to park (unless I'm wrong- feel free to correct me). Whereas at Rockland, you can walk right up to the edge nearly all the way around the lake. Also, there is a lot of green area poolside at Rockland, and you can have picnics in areas that have a nice view of the pool. At FDR, the sitting space is limited and kind of bumpy terrain (because of tree roots, pebbles, etc.). I went to the FDR pool during the last two weeks of operation, and while the pool is definitely larger than Rockland's, what they do is close off a lot of it at the end of the summer due to lack of staff (which they also do at Rockland). So while there may not be a ton of people in attendance, it feels like there is because they limit the swimming space. I think I saw that either at Rockland or FDR they had lap swimming during the early hours of operation (?) if that helps those interested in that ability. Also, FDR has lockers, whereas Rockland does not. So basically, I don't have anything bad to say about FDR, but I like Rockland better in comparison. read more

This is the perfect place to enjoy a day away from the noise of the city for the day but still get home in time for bed. I like that it's right off the highway. However, Make sure you have cash. They do not accept debit cards at all of the entrances. You don't want to be that mom-- the one who has to drive around to the main entrance and pay at the main office. Aside from that easily it's pretty cool place. Lovely park with picnic areas, charcoal grills, basketball courts and a play area for the kiddies. The pool is not the best and quite a distance from the grill/picnic area, but for $2.00, can you really complain? I'll definitely be back. read more

I regretfully rate this park 2 stars. The bathrooms near Parking Lot 4B do not have toilets that flush. I made a call and spoke to a Justin. He nonchalantly informed me what the problem was- the water pressure or lack of it. It is just a matter of time before the bathrooms will become unusable. Very disappointed! read more

This review is for the pool. I went here once and I will NEVER go again. Everything started out nice, arrived around 10am. The pool water was clear and there weren't a lot of people. By noon the pool had become so crowded that every few steps I was bumping into people. There was not much to do because no water toys were allowed. The huge pool was closed off into sections. They would not open unused sections so we were like sardines. I kept passing one couple that seemed to stay in one spot as far from everyone as possible against the ropes. Something about them seemed odd and NOT innocent. I dunked underwater and sure enough, the couple was having sex. Amongst a pool full of maybe 1200 people, LOTS of CHILDREN, this disgusting couple was spreading their fluids to everyone in the pool. I notified my friend and her son to stay clear of them. We contemplated letting the lifeguard know about it but as it was he was barely doing his job anyway. So about a half hour later, I went under the water again but this time it was so cloudy I could no longer see clearly under the water. I could only see a strand of hair, leaves, insects and lint floating a few feet in front of me. The divers I was once watching in the deep end seemed to vanish into this murky swamp. I told my friend it was time to go. I could imagine the amount of bodily fluids and sunscreen we had been swimming in for the past few hours and I wanted to the the F*ck outta there! read more

I worked here for eight years during my formative years. So this review might be biased, but oh well. I give this place 5 stars because I know the staff does the best it can on a budget that barely exists. The pool costs TWO DOLLARS to get in, so I'm not exactly sure why everyone is expecting The Taj Mahal of public pools (keyword PUBLIC). Yes, the vehicle use fee can be a bit steep but for $10 you can enjoy a day at the park and the pool which is extremely cheap for today. The rest of the park is beautiful and offers a clean place to hike, walk, run, play frisbee and disc golf (don't ask). You can reserve a picnic area for about $25 for 50 people (this is how much it costs when I worked there so the price may have gone up a bit) which especially if you're going in with a group of people, ends up being really cheap if you split it. The staff works really hard to keep the place clean when there are people who won't walk two feet to throw garbage out. There are NASTY people out there who trash the place and then complain that the park is dirty. After using the Astoria pool, I can say that the pool at this park is waaaaay nicer (no prison feel in the locker rooms or pat downs to go in) and I think people need to realize that this is a non-profit organization just doing their best to provide you with an affordable place to escape the city. read more

Pool review: I grew up coming here and recently went with my mom and family because 1) it has diving boards and 2) it's $3. Well, the diving boards were closed the day we went (on a Sunday, when it was 90 degrees out...). The place was crowded, which was expected for the weather. The grounds were recently updated and at least externally look much better than the stark concrete buildings they had before. They check your bags for food when you enter, so be prepared to spend $$ on something to eat. You will likely stand 30 minutes on a long line in the sun simultaneously dripping pool water and sweat waiting for your turn to order. You can't bring the food back around the pool area once you purchase, so wolf down everything at the ketchup/grease glazed picnic tables because there's a guard at the gate making sure no foodstuff trespasses. The Grounds: there's toilet paper everywhere (COULD also be thin napkins, but I'll err on the side of caution and assume it's TP). It's on the floor of the bathroom stalls, the changing stalls, in the hallways, where the showers are, in the friggin grass. When we got there around 1, the bathroom/shower structure didn't smell like pee yet. The scent crept in around 5-ish. Puddles of pool water formed around the benches outside of the pool and didn't drain. There was toilet paper/garbage floating on top of those things too, along with a thin oily film of some kind. There were people kicking their feet in it while sitting. I saw them hop back into the pool and that's when it was time to leave, but not before someone's kid jumped into the shallow end of the pool head first and the whole thing was evacuated to treat him. Came to fish. Only 2 spots. One was on the other side of the pool at Lake Crom Pond...tons of duck poop, too shallow with lots of seaweed and barely any room to cast your rod. Left after 10 minutes to try where you rent rowboats. The only way to fish at this lake (Lake Mohansic) is if you rent a row boat for an additional $7 an hour. We might have done better catching fish this way, but one of us doesn't like to be on the water. Oh well, won't be back here to fish. Great basketball courts though. read more

Last Sunday was beautiful and so we went to a beautiful park = FDR State Park. It is easily accessible, right off the highway, parking was no problem and there are plenty of picnic tables for those who want to picnic. We walked a trail, which was lovely, sat on a bench by the beautiful lake and really enjoyed the beautiful tranquil view. Plenty of bike riders, dog walkers and picnickers. I personally love spending time with my family and having cookouts here! It has lots of grass and lots of space to play a few of your favorite sports and enjoy yourself! Along with that, there is a pretty large pool ranging from 1-11 feet of water and includes diving boards with lifeguards either in the water or right outside the pool. Lake Mohansic is also walking distance from the pool. It's a great spot to hold a class trip or even a workout session! The site has an actual bathroom with more than 4 stalls and does not have any port-a-potties!! There's many picnic areas and many picnic tables! I do have to say that if you want to get inside the pool area, you have to pay 2 dollars per person I believe and wait a pretty long line. Prices also range depending on the ages of the people you bring with you. Overall, this is an amazing spot to take pictures and just take a nice long walk and spend time with nature or your partner!!! I look forward to going again this summer of 2015!!!
