I've never tried this place but it's been around since 1996 and I guess my mom used to go here during her lunch break when she worked at Willoughby hearing aid center, but it was around not too far down the road. Great hot and it's hard to find a good hotdog place that really serves up the flavor the size and good quality like this and the milkshakes are delicious as well. I finally visited the iconic Franks-a-Lot on Sunday afternoon on a walk to the Laurelhurst Theatre. The two people working there were just the sweetest folks, very helpful and friendly. I appreciated their recommendations for a first time visitor. Quick service for my standard all beef corn dog. It was very good but I would have preferred the batter to be a bit crunchier. I finally tried Franks-A-Lot and it did not disappoint! They offer a vegan frank (tofu hot dog) and a vegan Italian frank, plus gluten-free options. Their corndog batter contains milk, so you won't find vegan corndogs here but their vegan franks were delicious. Went today and the service was really weird. The employee literally judged my order, which was uncomfortable enough, but what really bothered me was the hygiene. He wiped his sweaty forehead with his bare hand and then immediately made my hot dog without washing his hands or putting on gloves. I understand this isn't a full-service restaurant and it's more of a small warm food counter, but basic food safety still matters. I did notice a lack of hand washing and gloves which the team inside made the hotdogs (toppings pinched and sprinkled on) and fries (again, hands straight in the bowl) and then running food to customers in the adjacent picnic table area; all without even looking at a sink. Great place for a good quality hot dog! We were shopping at Whole Foods when we decided we wanted a snack, so of course we had to try the hot dog stand - it's right in the parking lot! The dogs were dogs - nothing too special but hit the spot for sure. I love that you can choose your own kind of dog and customize what toppings you want, or choose a specialty dog with recommended toppings, like the Chicago style dog we got. Holy hot dog! This place has been on my radar ever since I went to India house (across the street). Went Friday evening around 630pm. Had a veggie chilli dog and my partner and I split a corn dog (just to try) with an Italian seasoned veggie dog. Oh my goodness the chili dog was so good, PACKED with red beans and the onions added the perfect crunch. It was so much food, I did have to eat a lot of the beans before I could pick up the dog and eat it but hey I ain't complaining! The corn dog was pretty good, I kind of wished the corn meal part was thicker but the veggie dog itself was an explosion of flavor. I've been here a couple of times with my dad. If you want a chili dog, corn dog etc, this is the place to go to. They have different kind of beefs you can choose from, the owners were pretty cool and yes it is a to-go place or you can choose out door seating. I was excited! I was craving a yummy corn dog, not a gas station one. Anyhoo, we showed up just before close and most dog choices were sold out (because they are SOOO YUMMY). After talking with Shon and explaining this was our first time here, he dug around in his remaining inventory to find us each a dog we would like. Yay! OMG! SOOOOO GOOOOOD!! You must stop by!! Franks-A-Lot is the "rill dill", folks: cheap, quick, delicious brats and krauts, savory, spicy or vegan (ugh!), on a stick or in a bun, all of them packing that potent pork piquancy, and customizable to your preferences, with every condiment you can imagine (although WAY too many people were ordering ketchup with their dogs, if you ask me)! Whatever your sausage selection, you are going to relish it...with or without relish! There's also an excellent selection of sides, salads, sodas to accompany your massive weiner: we sampled the potato salad (pretty sure it's just Reser's in a plastic container), along with our Red Hot Chicago Style, and a Spicy Oktoberfest corndog. My wife couldn't finish hers, as it was simply too much meat for her to handle at once, so she took half home to save it for later. As for my Red Hot Chicago, the only complaint is that it comes so overloaded with toppings, it's impossible to tackle it without a knife and fork. A true institution and gem in Portland. Since 1993 Margo has been the owner and making happy customers, she just added three more today. We had 3 different dogs fries and shake everything was great and very reasonable price. Clean tables outside and really enjoyed enjoy talking with Margo hearing the history. After getting the healthy stuff at Whole Foods, this is a great pit stop, I mean, they have gluten-free corn dogs (they share oil) so it's good for you. Speaking of the gf corndog is not like those you find in the super market, well not as fluffy but tastes amazing. I do suggest waiting until it has cooled a bit. The hot dog is also amazing and HUGE. I thought I was getting a snack and it ended up being a lite dinner. The couple running place are very nice. There is also seating around to enjoy, if you don't want to wait. Frank a lot is located next to Whole Foods so it's convenient when you're on that grocery run. You can either drive thru or walk up. Yes there is a guy named Frank and the people that run this place are super nice, helpful and accommodating. There are lots of different types of dogs to choose from and you can have any of them either hot dog style or corn dog style. I enjoyed the Polish dog, corn dog style with a side of the hand cut fries/fry sauce. yes, the hand cut fries are delicious and don't forget the fry sauce. Lots of salads to choose from if you prefer. Support your local small guy. This has made it through the pandemic so far and I hope it stays that way. Check it out! :-) read more
