I've actually never written a review before in my life. But after my experience this afternoon, I'm ready. I called John's Lock & Key after finding them on yelp. I specifically explained **that I could not get into the mail lockbox and there was no key** so we needed to replace the lock. His estimate varied depending on what kind of lock was needed as a replacement - totally fair, that's fine. And a service fee to come to the building - still on board. However, when they arrived and started working, there was a surprise fee of $169 just to merely open the box. ***My total ended at $320 - they were only in my building for 7 - 10 minutes max. no joke*** And even though I called the owner post installation and nicely conversed with him about the surprise charge, despite me outlining exactly what was needed, he was unwavering about the charges that he ignored to bring up on our call when requesting an estimate. As a small business owner myself, I'm appalled at this transaction. My best advise? find another locksmith ... P.S. My building's owner just lost his locksmith of 15 years to retirement and specifically asked for John's info (which I brought up with him). But sorry John;s Lock & Key, you could have had a customer with 5 buildings and over 100 tenants needing a locksmith on your roster. read more

My mother needed to rekey several dead bolt locks. Two lock set entry type locks and one Baldwin fully morticed front entry door set. All were to be keyed alike. Certainly a fair amount of work no question. In addition, to be fair when he took a part two of the dead bolts my cleaning people in advertainly tossed the parts out thinking it was junk. Yes it was a busy day a lot going on. The service person I believe was the owner as well. Older man at 78 years old. My mother is 93 with some moderate dementia. She had used him before. She told me how fair he was and nice. Red flag. I found him to be nice enough but very slow. Again, there was plenty he had to do. Should have been about a three hour job maybe. He was at her property two days for eight hours. In his van which is his mobile shop. The keys he cut were the cheap aluminum ones. My first attempt to open the front door with the key resulted in the key shearing off into the locking mechanism. Very upsetting. He also forgot to re key one of the gate dead bolts. Okay, so we all make mistakes. Not a big deal. His invoice was for 950.00. He charged by the hour for his labor. I am not exaggerating. You have an example of one old person taking full advantage of an even older person with dementia. He corrected the crappy aluminum keys to brass at my insistence. He charged full pop for his slow work. We paid him because my mother did not want a problem and wanted him gone. Do not use Frank's Lock and key in Torrance. read more

Fixed the lock on my truck bed, took less than 20 min and beyond nice to me when we found out it was my fault for overfilling my bed with horse blankets. Then they came out to the house a few weeks later and fixed the lock to our wine room(Urgent), in the rain, and got us in less than 10 min after he arrived and didn't complain once about the weather. The "Lock Doctor" succeeds, when all others failed. Problem: A Samsonite suitcase that I purchased decades ago, came with two (2) keys for the dual, built-in locks. As of now, I only have one key and would like to get a duplicate as a "back-up". Solution(s) in chronological order: 1. Reached out to Samsonite and gave them the "key #" that is stamped on it for identification. Regrettably, they're useless. They don't' stock spare parts! (They'd rather you buy a new luggage.) (What's the point of Samsonite stamping 'lock #s on their keys'?) Customer Support suggested I go to a locksmith to make a duplicate from my original. 2. Home Depot doesn't have a 'suitable blank' to cut a duplicate. Sorry. 3. Tried three (3) other local locksmiths: (a) Lomita Lock & Key - doesn't have a suitable blank. Told me to contact Samsonite with the key #. (b) Torrance Lock & Key - had other blanks for Samsonite, but not the one I need. Told me to contact Samsonite with the key #. (c) Lazimi Lock & Key - didn't carry suitable blanks. (I told her that I've already contacted Samsonite and they're useless.) So, the young lady recommended that I try 'Frank's Lock & Key'. (I asked, "Where is he located?" She says, "Old Town Torrance.") Thank you for your professional courtesy and referral. 4. Drove over to Old Town and found Frank's, but it was 'temporarily closed'. (Don't trust online searches that say a business is 'Open' now.) Verify this yourself. Next time, I called first and my call was immediately answered by Leo. He was returning to the shop from a field service call. Met him at the shop and he did find a 'possible match', but couldn't guarantee that it'll work. Leo gave me the key and said if it works, then return another day and slip $2 thru the mail slot. (I regret ignoring my foresight to bring my suitcase with me.) Drove home and was disappointed that the 'possible match' didn't work. A few days go by and I called Frank's to make sure they're open. Leo answered and was in the shop. He remembered me. Drove over there and brought the suitcase this time. Leo's persistence to find a workable solution paid off. He found suitable blanks and 'cut & grinded them' to make them work. Problem solved! My personal thoughts of Leo, the owner of Frank's Lock & Key. He reminds me of my parents' generation. He's an easy-going, knowledgeable, skilled master tradesman, who is also trustworthy and honest. I don't know him. Nor does he know me. But, he trusted me enough to come back and pay for services rendered, if it worked. Who else does that these days? (I must have a trustworthy face and personality.) His shop may not be modern or fancy, but he carries a humongous variety of locks, keys, and accessories (that I didn't know existed). After all, he's in 'Old Town' and walking thru the door is like stepping back in time, when honest work and fair prices earned a business a loyal following that keeps them running. Traditionally we have been using a key but as you know, keys get lost so I purchased a special digital keypad lock specifically made for this pushbar.
