[Review #696] 2022 Yelp 100 Challenge (17/100) I called around town for an automotive locksmith to create a duplicate Porsche car key for my manager. I also inquired with Porsche South Bay to check cost & timing; it would cost $250 & was a formal & lengthy process that would take approximately 1 week to complete. Luckily, the service department has an alternative recommendation that is less expensive & has faster turnaround. And this is how I found out about Old Towne Lock & Key. Old Towne Lock & Key is located in the Torrance Promenade shopping center, on the southeast corner behind the UFC Gym, across from Ponce Recycling Center. There's a narrow alley on the south side of the gym that leads to the locksmith. I shop at this center frequently & have never been back here so I create a map to direct my manager here. If you use Waze & entered the shop's name, the directions are not as accurate than if you entered the recycling center for directions. Most locksmiths said European car keys are more difficult to duplicate than Asian brands, so they don't provide this service. The 2 that I did find either charged an exorbitant amount or can't quote until he sees the key & vehicle even when I said it's an older model & likely before the keyless entry/sensor keys. I had trouble reaching Locksmith Toshi via cell phone initially because he was on a house call, but he's responsive when he's at the shop. He confirmed he could duplicate the key for $10 & it'll be done in a couple of mins. What?!! He also confirmed that he could duplicate house/generic keys at $2.50/key, which is more or less the going rate of most local locksmiths. Just to be safe, I asked my manager to send me a pic of his car key so I can show Toshi in-person if this is something he can duplicate. Yep... done & done!! When you look around, the space is small & cluttered with walls & walls of blank keys, display cases of knickknacks & other odds & ends (there's a bunch of model cars, not sure if they're RC, in the glass display below -- for show or sale?). In addition to the scores of keys, there are solid front door locks stationed by the entrance. Wished I knew about OTL&K when we replaced our front door along with a new lock, & when our kids locked us out. I texted my manager that Toshi will be in/available after his appointment, & he's able to duplicate his car & house keys. My manager was barely there for 20-mins. & got 2 sets of the Porsche spare key along with a bunch of house & lock keys for less than $40. In addition, Toshi referred a Porsche mechanic to look into another issue; talk about killing multiple birds with one stone! My manager left happy & I received glowing praises for this find!! Old Towne Lock & Key doesn't leave much of an impactful impression upon first sight, but don't let that deter you from this solid mom & pop locksmith. With honest service, cheap to competitive pricing, Toshi will give you what you need without fuss & fast turnaround. Just be sure to bring cash, they don't accept checks or credit cards. It's the only store on that stretch of the back building Much of the counter is devoted to lush potted plants which provide welcome greenery & more fresh oxygen. All sorts of assocated lock & key accoutrement as well as selling fancy front door locks including ornate handles in what looks lIke brass or pewter. I wanted to duplicate an old Schlage key from probably the 1960's. I had gone to Home Depot, which is good for nothing when it comes to old school parts. Also went to an automated key kiosk at Albertson's which initially mistook my house key for a car key. Then later telling me they could mail the supposed duplicate key by mail after scanning it. However, it could be days before I got the key, and what would I do if the duplicate didn't work? At Old Towne Lock & Key, they made a duplicate in less than 2 minutes. Ultra fast service.
