Gold was suggested so I had temporary crowns placed and was in pain for the entire three weeks. I couldn't eat. I lost weight, which was great, but not in an ideal way. I called the office one week into the pain and was told not to worry it is normal. Then I went in for the permanent gold crowns to be placed and explained I was in pain. The dentist said he wish he knew that in the weeks prior, I told him I had called about it and he said that he was disappointed in the receptionist or assistant whom had taken my call. His assistant placed the temporary crowns and the gold crowns with the temporary cement. She has a tremor which may be fine for assisting the dentist but I wasn't comfortable that someone with hand tremors was doing the more intricate work of placing the crowns. I'd thought the dentist would do that or an assistant who did not have a tremor. After rolling her eyes about my interest in having Novocaine for the procedures, she stated that she gets all of her dental work without any numbing medication. To each her own I suppose but I prefer to be numb for dental drilling. She placed the crowns with a temporary cement and the dentist said my teeth just need to calm down and that his office would call me in two weeks to assess. They did not call. I left three messages and was still in pain. I was wondering what to do next. This ordeal started in May and now it's August. I call again and the message in their voicemail said they were out of the office on vacation for the month of August. I made appointments with another dentist and a periodontist. Both of whom said it was unusual to have pain that long. I went to Dr. Funke just to establish care and was not in any pain prior to going ahead with the crowns. They ran an estimate on what my insurance would cover and said it would be 40% for each drilling and crown placement and a smaller portion for each gold crown themselves. They were wrong. My insurance covered 10% of one crown drilling and nothing else. Turns out my insurance pays their portion for only one crown a year. I know now to look into my insurance and not trust their estimate. Had I known I would have had one done a year. My total bill for all of this out of pocket added up to $6,300. Then an additional $1,200 I've paid to my new dentist to permanently place the crowns after they assessed me with x rays, and exams. Perhaps I just had bad luck with Dr. Funke. I hope others have better experiences.

After exam, a treatment plan was presented by Sam the assistant who did the X-rays. There were three columns of numbers on the plan; Amount--Pri Ins--Patient. I made it clear to Sam my health insurance would pay zero toward plan and she indicated zero ins was listed. The first procedure, deep cleaning half of mouth was listed, Amount $592--Pri Ins $0--Patient $444 . I agreed to this. (see image) I was very impressed with Dr. Park, so I called my daughter and recommended she visit and get current with Dental care. On Feb 15, I returned for first procedure, half mouth deep cleaning. While it seemed rushed the procedure was satisfactory. On the way out, the woman at the back counter demanded $592. I thought she was adding amount from first visit, as my understanding was that the fee was $444 for today. I thought she had added on the X-ray/exam visit and advised those amounts should be submitted to Insurance as they would cover that. I paid the $444 and left. On Feb. 20 my daughter went in for exam/X-rays. Sam presented her with treatment plan. It showed for four fillings, Amount $1332--Pri Ins $0--Patient $922. Sam clearly told her $922 would be her cost. She was happy all would be done in one visit. On Feb. 29 my wife received a text message demanding payment. As she had not been to the office in months, she called to inquire. On speaker phone I heard it was my account being referred to. I spoke up and explained to front counter lady that my understanding was the Patient amount $444 was the total and thought Office was granting write off as shown on plan. The front office lady then told me it was the office's "prerogative" which amount to charge. I immediately canceled future appointment. On Mar. 5 my daughter went in for her fillings. After having been told her total would be $922, she was charged $1332 on way out. Is this what passes for proper office procedures these days? Seems like bait and switch to me. If you elect to use this office (Dr. Park) watch out.

However, I explained my situation to the front staff (which are wonderful by the way, both of the ladies have smiles that light up the whole room), they relayed the message to Dr. Van Patten and he immediately got me in. Jaime, my hygienist was wonderful, the fact that I remember her name just goes to show how great she was. I actually felt that I having an honest conversation with her, you know, not the kind of conversations where all you can do is "uhhh huhh" or nod and shake your head, but not too fast because your mouth is wide open with sharp tools. She took the time to explain to me everything she was doing and paused often to talk and to make sure I was doing okay. Anyways, back to the doc. As soon as Dr. Van Patten came in, we had a nice conversation (unrelated about teeth), I told him that I was taking a class in school that taught me the anatomy of the mouth and teeth, so of course he shows me xrays of my own teeth and quizzes me on the anatomy of my tooth..... got like an 80% on that quiz :) At the end of my check, he asked me about my future goals, plans, etc, and wished me the best on my travels. He walked me up to the front desk, gave me a sample of toothpaste, and a firm hand shake. I now recently moved to another state, but I plan to continue my dental appointments with Dr. Van Patten whenever I return for winter and summer breaks. I wish I could give this office more than just 5 stars, cause they really are something special. I had 2 bad experiences with Dr Kiggins first his assistant made a mistake with a temporary crown…read morethey had put it they had to call me back remove the crown remove some string or packing and then replace the crown. The dentist was not even present and the assistant did this work, I was very uncomfortable with this procedure. Second Dr Kiggins replaced the permanent crown with a crown that needed several adjustments as it did not fit right. He used his grinder on a few occasions trying to adjust the bite. It never fit correctly and did not feel right, upon consulting with another dentist it turned out that the tooth root was found to be cracked possibly from chewing on a tooth way out of adjustment. Now I have the cost of a dental implant which I have put off for a while as for the cost after already paying Dr Kiggins to replace this crown. Now off to get a dental implant.This was the worst dental experience I have ever had.
