You mean to tell me, after waiting a month to see you, paying a $60 co-pay and I'm sitting in front of you with valid concerns about my health, you are going to tell me "no, I only have 15 minutes"? My 7-year-old daughter, who has Level 3 autism, underwent blood and urine testing, and we were waiting for the results. A nurse named Erin entered the room speaking in a loud tone and smiling. She then told us that our daughter was diabetic, had Type 1 diabetes, and needed to go to the hospital. Because my daughter is only seven years old and has Level 3 autism, it was especially important for this information to be communicated calmly, clearly, and sensitively. As her parents, we also needed the news to be explained with compassion and care, particularly because she does not fully understand what was happening. We were hearing life-changing news about our child for the first time. The possibility of a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis was frightening and devastating. Yet Erin delivered the news loudly and with a smile, without any apparent recognition of the seriousness of the situation or consideration of my daughter's needs. I understand that medical professionals must communicate clearly and that Erin needed to direct us to the hospital. My concern is not that she provided this information or recommended immediate hospital care. My concern is the lack of compassion, empathy, and sensitivity in the way she delivered such serious news. There was no calm explanation, reassurance, or acknowledgment of how terrified we were as parents or how frightening the situation could be for our child, especially given her autism and young age. Erin's manner felt cold, careless, and inappropriate under the circumstances. The experience affected me so severely that I had a panic attack and required medical attention at the hospital myself. Healthcare professionals may deliver serious diagnoses regularly, but parents do not receive news like this every day. For our family, this was one of the most frightening moments of our lives. When informing parents that their young child may have a lifelong medical condition and needs immediate hospital care, compassion, sensitivity, and professionalism are essential--especially when the child has additional needs and may not understand what is happening. After this visit, I will not return to Patient First. This was the worst healthcare experience of my life, and I personally would not want to be treated by Erin again. I believe people should be aware of how this situation was handled. The only reason I continued going to Patient First was because of Dr. Rod Johnson, who is an excellent doctor, and Laura, who has also been wonderful. I sincerely appreciate both of them and the care they have provided. I hope Patient First takes this complaint seriously and provides additional training on communicating serious medical information with empathy, sensitivity, and professionalism. That training should include how to support autistic children and their families during frightening and potentially life-changing medical situations.

As he moves through the regular parts of the exam, there is always a joke or a tickle somewhere along the way. The kids wait for it with a big grin on their face, and it makes doctor visits fun. When the exam is over and he turns to talk to you, the pleasant demeanor remains. His explanations are very comprehensible, with no hint of pedantry, and he takes the time to be certain that all your concerns are addressed. During each well-child visit he took extra time to discuss issues such as how to coax my daughter into eating more healthy food or how to discipline my son successfully. I've found Dr. Johnson to have a laid-back and goofy style that fits our family well.

My insurance company would not pay for it. So I went through Good Rx. I had to drive over an hour to a pharmacy to get this medication. I took this medication for 11 months at $179 a month. Then I went to my regular GI doc who performed a colonoscopy; which is the only definitive means of diagnosing Crohn's. He tested for Crohn's and it was negative. When I initially saw Dr. Trible he ordered a capsule endoscopy, and this was how he "diagnosed" Crohn's. I won't ever forget what Dr. Trible said, "I'm saying Crohn's disease" like he was picking it off a menu. When I told Dr. Trible of the colonoscopy result, he continued to insist I had Crohn's and even attempted to throw my GI doc under the bus. When I posted a negative Google review, the practice administrator got in touch with me. I told her all that happened. She told me my complaint would be passed on to a team for review and she would be back in touch. That was months ago. I have called the practice administrator multiple times with no return call. The least the practice administrator should have done was call me and tell me my complaint was reviewed and no action would be taken. This ignoring me is so unprofessional and makes me believe they are hiding something.

This pain was different, and it wouldn't go away on its own, so I found myself at Next Care one Sunday morning. The front desk staff is really friendly. The girls questioned me on my Virginia license (they're new, and they're horrific) and then set me in front of a kiosk, as the clinic strives to be paper free. That's swell, but the kiosk froze up on me, so the nurse assistant had to go over the same information with me later in the exam room. They have all new equipment at this location, as my blood pressure was taken with a fancy machine, the nurse just stood there and monitored it. There's even a TV in each exam room, mainly because I think they know you'll be sitting in there for a good chunk of your day. That's my only real complaint about Next Care, I was kept waiting for about an hour and ten minutes before I was seen, and then another twenty minutes to get my prescriptions and paperwork. That said, at these sort of places you should expect a wait if you don't get there when they open. They do try to see patients in the order that they arrived, but there were several sick kids in the clinic that morning that got preference over me, which is understandable. No one enjoys toddler meltdowns, and there was a baby howling for his life, so please, do go ahead and go in front of me. When I was finally seen by a PA, he was very friendly and helpful. He told me I should take two hot showers a day and told me what I could and couldn't do for the next couple of weeks. He did seem harried, but that's not surprised. They only have one PA and one doctor on staff most of the time, but I think this is on par for these kind of clinics. So, all in all I would go back to Next Care if I found myself in pain and unable to wait to get in with my primary care doctor. I'd just try and get there right when they open, or they have a service where you can check in online and they'll let you know when they're ready for you. Best of all, they're right next to Salsaritas, so you can grab a delicious lunch or dinner when you finally get out of there!

An older man walked in and needed help with his check in and using a QR code. The receptionist ignored him. I had to help him. Then another man waiting got up to help him. The receptionist needs to do her job. She also needs to show the same kindness to people no matter what color the patient is. If you want to see how far health care has fallen go to this location. If you want good health care go elsewhere.

The staff has been extremely responsive and answers all of my questions thoroughly. There was a slight hiccup with shipping my prescriptions but it was addressed immediately when I inquired with the office staff. I have had 3 back surgeries and have suffered from recent spasms and pain in lumbar and thoracic area. With a slight change in diet, daily piriformis stretches, using a trigger point foam roller and daily walking I was making some progress on my rehab but felt exhausted and pitifully weak. After doing bloodwork and reviewing with the doc, she developed a customized plan for me and my specific goals. I am at 8 weeks of treatment and my life has taken a drastic turn for the better. I don't take any pain meds or muscle relaxers and have not done so the last two months. I did push-ups for the first time in 2.5 years this week. I am thrilled (although very sore) at how strong I feel. I feel 10 years younger and there is no price for those results. Speaking of price, I compared the prescriptions to another clinic in Northern VA & DC and it was literally 60-70% more expensive the further north I went. Lastly, just to clarify, I am taking the time to type this because it literally has changed my quality of life. I hope that it does the same for whomever gives it a shot. For the first time in my life I proactively invested in my health and it has been one of the best decisions ever. I recommend this clinic wholeheartedly.
