Snowshoe Thompson is buried here, as are many of Gayle's beloved relatives. My first experience in a cemetery was when my mother used to air me out on top of a tombstone when I was a baby. Since then, I can't say that really a "Fan" of any of these places. However, when you consider this cemetery's community history, the various families represented, accents such as animal and religious sculptures, and the way that individual plots are cherished and maintained, it's all very fascinating and educational. However, I could have done without my son's retelling of the Jonah Hex movie during our stroll, and opining about his preference for a marble tombstone some day in the far future. The Genoa Cemetery also offers a scenic view to the valley below and the mountains above, and a sense of calm for this final resting place. There are also separate Masonic and other sections, and it's easy to walk around at a respectful pace and path.

While Genoa is mostly known for that fact and the museum in town, the cemetery is another piece of history that's worth a stop. In it you will find the tomb of "Snowshoe" Thompson, who was famous for delivering the mail in the Sierras. There are a number of old memorials in the cemetery. I found the grave for David Walley, for which the resort we're staying at down the road is named. This is an easy stop, you can actually drive through the cemetery to get to Snowshoe's tomb. There are nice views of the valley below, and it is a peaceful spot. Lots of interesting photo ops for you photogs out there.

Smith Family Mortuary was there for me in that time of our loss. Crematory rates were awesome, compared to past experiences with other mortuaries. Jeff Smith, one of the owners and family members of the company was very supportive and handled all of my wishes and retrieving the death certificates needed in dealing with all of the finances and red tape when someone passes. I later had to get the death certificate amended and Jeff was there to help with reaching out to the doctor who initially signed the death certificate. Here I am again, requesting more follow up, but the folks here have been kind and helpful. Years ago, my mother was also cremated at Smith Family. These folks deserve a lot of respect. Not an easy job seeing small town Fallon friends and family pass away.

When my husband passed, I contacted Hooper & Weaver and they were eager to pick him up. I trusted them, especially since I was preparing to leave out of town for business. I confirmed online that they were open on Saturday and drove down from Nevada to meet with someone in person. When I arrived, no one was there. I called repeatedly and was routed through an answering service (Ruby). I was told no one could help me. Meanwhile, the hospital told me they could not even locate my husband. I was shuffled back and forth between the hospital and the mortuary for hours. I waited on their property for five hours, distraught and in tears, not knowing where my husband was or what had happened. I was eventually told -- not by the mortuary directly, but by a nurse who kindly returned my call -- that my husband had already been picked up that morning. No one from Hooper & Weaver communicated that to me. That moment of not knowing where my husband was is something I will never forget. Fast forward nearly a month later, and the confusion continues. I was scheduled to pick up my husband's cremains yesterday. I was told to speak with Tiffany, but when I called, she was not there. I was told no one else could help me and that I would have to leave a voicemail -- even though her voicemail states she is there Monday through Friday, and it was Friday. Now I am being told by my father-in-law that my husband may not have even been cremated yet -- nearly a month later -- despite the fact that I have signed all required paperwork and provided payment information. I have documentation showing everything has been completed on my end. Yet my in-laws are being told something entirely different. No one seems to know what the other person is doing. My family is receiving conflicting information. I have been out of state multiple times for work, driven back and forth from Nevada, and all the while I have been told everything is handled -- only to find out it may not be. Losing a spouse is painful enough. The lack of communication, accountability, and clarity has made this process exponentially more traumatic. When my mother passed away last June, another mortuary handled everything professionally and compassionately within two weeks. It will be one month next Thursday since my husband passed, and we still do not have clear answers. Families deserve transparency, consistency, and compassion during one of the hardest times of their lives. That has not been our experience. I previously removed a negative review at their request in good faith. Given what has continued to occur, I feel it is important to share this experience so other families can make informed decisions.
