VERY BASIC. Many public school cafeterias provide the same quality of food. You go down into the basement on the backside of Fred's Mercantile, stand in line, order at the register, pay and then hope for the best. I've found that Fred's Backside frequently runs out of the ingredients needed for both the most basic menu items and also daily specials. When they do have what you want, the wait may sometimes be long. Most days, there's just one person at the grill. YES, Fred's is "quaint" (definition: attractively unusual or old-fashioned)... and YES, Fred's motto is, "If we don't have it, you don't need it." ... well, that's presumptuous... Safe yourself a step. There are numerous attractive, efficient and well staffed restaurants just 8-12 minutes away in Banner Elk. Menu is full if good things, Place is warm especially during winter. There is anything from meat to salad making the choices unlimited. However they didnt have any chicken sandwiches available and ran out of hamburger buns, so always have a plan B. The food is delicious although there is no service. Terrible service, they are extremely unfriendly. A very limited breakfast and out of hash browns, out of hot chocolate and expresso. We went for breakfast and waited over an hour for the order. They were short two plates and we had to wait till they served the rest of the tables before getting the orders. The eggs were slapped on top of each other, the grits were like a block and bacon burned. They make you feel like you are bothering them for being there. I've been twice, out of desperation when other things have been closed on the mountain, and every time... the food has just been lack luster leaving a lot to be desired. I will say, the customer service is okay, so they get one star for that.. however, the food doesn't make up for the service. I'd suggest looking at other options. read more

Overcharged and treated rudely. We were looking forward to breakfast but the experience took a turn when we asked about why our bill was so high. Turns out we were charged $5 for 5 cups of water to cover their cost of styrofoam cups. The manager was rude to us and her employees. The food wasn't great but wasn't bad. We came for the Saturday hamburger cookout. There was a very large crowd on this day as it was the cookout and there was a crafts fair on the property, so we ended up getting our food about an hour after arriving. The burger and fresh toppings were very good, though the baked beans were a bit dry and by the time we left, they had run out of baked beans and coleslaw. We got a table out on the patio, which provided a lovely view of their bird houses and trees. read more

Honestly, this is my first bad review, most of the time I chalk it up to a bad day, but I can't find any excuses for this place. Don't waste your time. I thought, "who can mess up breakfast, right?" Well, if you serve three day old hash browns that have been fried and reheated each day, I guess you probably could mess it up! I was afraid to eat them. The wait staff seemed like we were just inconveniencing them and the cook seemed like he just didn't care. You have to order at the counter and they do give you a glass plate to eat on, but you have to eat with plastic forks. Fred's might have the best breakfast but it is certainly not the biggest! The "not so" Big Country Breakfast is enough food for a 10 year old, but certainly not an adult. Two scrambled eggs looked like one small egg, you might get a half a cup of hashbrowns (home fries), the four pieces of bacon look like two cut in half. There only thing true to size was the toast. So if you are hungry, order two breakfasts. It all tasted good and came out quick. But an early lunch will be in order. read more

I was waiting in line for breakfast with quite a few other customers for about twenty minutes. The line was moving really slow as no one seemed to be working. All of a sudden this female employee comes out from behind the counter and tells everyone that breakfast is over and we need to leave. The people is front of me lost their minds! They had probably waited for half an hour. When we complained about waiting for so long the employee said she didn't care and no one else would be served. We stay on Beech Mtn every year and have banned Fred's. read more

Lady at the counter taking orders was always in a rush to take orders and not meeting customer needs. So much so that she incorrectly took our order and our food came out at all different times. We did not have time to dine at this topside mountain eatery BUT we did utilize their mini convenience store, purchasing staple food items for our dinners at our VRBO stay at the Pinnacle Inn and Resort. Friendly service with the country folk staring at us as we briskly shopped. I felt like an extra in the movie American Vacation as we entertained the locals with our remarks about the handmade Bathouses forsale on the wall. A little pricey but at least they had some produce. Pick up your six pack of cheer wine to enjoy on your next nature hike or trip to Linville Caverns. read more

Friendly staff and great food. We ate for lunch, took home bbq for dinner, and went back for breakfast the next morning. The portions were generous, and the prices were good. We also shopped at the general store upstairs for all the things we forgot to bring with us or couldn't, such as dish detergent, laundry soap, cold medicine, soda, and wine. In a town that survives on tourism you think they would be a little more pleasant here at Fred's. We went to breakfast at Fred's the morning we arrived for a visit to Beech Mtn and it came highly recommended by our hosts. We were sad to discover that they were out of biscuits by the time we got there (they are apparently quite delicious as is evident by the fact that they sell out every day), but we made due and both ordered the country breakfast. They were also completely out of sausage (my daughters favorite), which didn't surprise me because of the famous biscuits. The grits were yum, eggs and bacon perfect. It was quick, filling and fairly cheap. All in all we ordered 2 big country breakfasts, a milk and cereal for the kiddo and 2 drinks and it was about $19. A lot of other reviews mentioned an unruly counter attendant, but we received smiles and helpful service even though the line took a few mins to get through! We will definitely stop again and try to get there early before all the goodies are gone! read more

don't understand or agree with the negative reviews - we had breakfast there last week and it was excellent. I had an egg/bacon/biscuit that was great and a warm cinnamon bun that was to die for. Clearly a local hangout (highly recommended by the ski resort staff). Do need to get there early (before 10am). The general store upstairs was also a treat - one of a kind - every square foot of space is taken up by something - lots of ski stuff but groceries and the like as well. read more

Every small town needs a General Store like Fred's. It is a combination of grocery/deli/gift shop/ski shop/clothing/hardware store. If you are stranded in a blizzard and in need of food, they are always there and have a surprisingly big selection that goes beyond staples to include fresh stuff, specialties and nice selection of wine. The best part is that you don't have to drive down the mountain to get what you need. Reasonably priced considering the convenience. The Backside Deli is one of my favorite spots -- with the best Chili in the area. My other favorites are the Country Club sandwich, tomato soup and taco salad. Their summertime "backyard burgers" are grilled to order outside and include side orders. So good! Other reviewers have complained of slow service, but come on... It's a small kitchen, with a hard-working staff and they make everything to order. Keep yourself on "mountain time" and remember you are on vacation... RELAX and get to know the people in line with you. read more
