Two egg breakfast with hash browns and bacon
    Sarah K.

I first tried to visit on Monday but they were closed with no signs about closure, so I wasn't sure if it was for the holidays or the hours were messed up. This location is definitely a bit off the beaten path, and it's a very basic local joint. If you are looking for affordable options and okay portions, this is your place. My sole purpose in seeking this place out not once, but twice, was the chocolate gravy. I grew up eating chocolate gravy in rural Mississippi and it is so rare to see on the menu that it pushed this place to the top of the list. They were out of the chocolate gravy. I tried to order peanut butter pancakes, and they were out of that too. Finally I just tried to get a one egg breakfast with tenderloin but guess what...they were out of that too. I finally just asked for the chocolate chip pancake and given the option of city or country ham, went with city ham because I wasn't ready for that much sodium this early. The pancake was a great size, pretty thick, and came with a generous amount of chocolate chips. The ham tasted fine but flavor on my food was pretty basic. I will say the one thing that stood out a little was the hash browns - I don't quite know how they are prepping the hash browns but there was an almost potato chip crisp on the edges that was very nice. Soft drinks were served in 20 ounce bottles, so I'm not sure why they could not get a container of cocoa powder or peanut butter in...but that's none of my business. ‍ She said they had been missing a lot of the stuff they needed on their delivery truck. Service was pretty good, and they definitely connect with the locals.

This place gets a five for so many reasons…read more First thing is that everyone that works there is a true delight to speak with. I was staying at a hotel just down the street and our experience was so good, My son and I had breakfast two days in a row here. Not only was Sierra and the team of people working the breakfast counter sweeter than the homemade jam, they were also engaging friendly and so kind to my son and me. Let's talk about the food. The homemade bread, perfectly cooked eggs, homemade local sausage, fresh local breads from the bakery around the corner, which I believe was Stick Figure or something like that, and probably the best pancake I've had in years. If you love breakfast- and I do not... you are not to miss this place. I must say that this May has turned me into a breakfast lover. Just a note, you'll probably wait an hour for a table... But the breakfast counter and community table are towards the back Thank you all! Hope to see you soon

Absolutely amazing brunch! I had the Watauga Sunrise (2 eggs, grits, sausage patties, and some…read moretoast with apple butter), and I couldn't finish it all, despite how much I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed a locally sourced tea, which was absolutely lovely. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and apparently all the ingredients were sourced from local farms and bakeries! The toast wasn't your average white bread you'd get in a diner, it was from Stickboy Bakery down the street. The sausage patties hands-down would have made this meal worth it, but did they stop there? Of course not! These grits were the most beautiful grits I've ever seen. I don't know what they're doing, but I love it! Their tea wasn't quite up to my standards, but they have a great selection. If I were them, I would skip the little French press thing they serve the tea in (it winds up with your second cup being steeped way too long) and maybe switch to a teapot or something similar. Also, I don't think they were using filtered water for the tea; it makes such a difference in the flavor. (To be honest, I had to leave my old tea place back in Virginia, and I am dying to find a new one here. And if a few tips help make me a good tea spot, all the better!) The ambiance was so relaxed. I loved the use of vintage mugs for the tea. Definitely a great place to stop by and read a book, or study if you're one of the students at the university a few blocks away. Service was delightful. I absolutely plan to go back!

Proper is just that, a quaint and popular restaurant that features the chef's special select menu each day which means reservations are highly suggested. We were lucky enough to arrive right before peak dinner time and was able to score a spot to the front overlooking the chefs garden where ingredients are home grown. We started with their carrot and apple soup with coconut milk base. I know this is tmi but I'd be satisfied swimming in a pool of that delicious soup. Fresh, fresh and fresh. I decided on the baked catfish with olives, tomatoes and thyme together with green beans potato casserole and side salad while my partner enjoyed fried chicken breast with potatoes and gravy, steamed cabbage and cornbread. Very few can take a boneless fried chicken to taste like it's still on the bone. Excellently done. We then savored on their recommended dessert chocolate chip bread pudding with homemade ice cream. If you're in the neighborhood give this quaint little house a try you won't be disappointed.

On this last trip, we went twice. I got the Beth Ann Clark both times. I just love their cheesy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, fruit, and french toast. My husband tried two different entrees this time--the Butch Triplett (corned beef and eggs) and their breakfast burrito. Their corned beef is likely from a can, but it's so good because they cook it so it's very crispy. I always steal some of his corned beef to add to my eggs! Their breakfast burrito is amazing. It's simply filled, with just scrambled eggs, cheese, small bits of ham, and hash browns. It's topped with an enchilada sauce that is similar to a ranchero sauce, and is served with sour cream and guacamole. It's a massive burrito, and SO GOOD! My husband said it's his new favorite. Social on Main is popular, and so we always go early (before 8am). After 8am, there is usually a wait--especially on Saturdays. Their servers are always friendly, and the food is delivered fast. Their coffee is nice and strong, too. I wish we had a Social on Main near our house, because we'd visit them weekly. Give them a try if you are in Blowing Rock for a visit and want a great breakfast!
