Got my Iron Rangers resoled at Fred's. Stitching is crooked on the right boot. Response from Fred's was the stitching will be strong and not impact durability. OK, but not thrilled since it looks bad. I do't wear these boots too often since I have several pairs. i just noticed they also scraped the leather with the stitcher on the same boot. The leather is actually a little thinner now in this spot. The scrape runs parallel to the welt in an area where normal wear would not cause the scrape. In addition, the scrape shows up in a picture I took immediately after the resole. It appears they covered up the scrape with brown polish or another shoe product. They did not mention any of the issues when the boots were picked up by a family member that lives near Peoria. Do not recommend, and I will not use them again. read more

I honestly cannot say enough about this local business. I rolled in one lazy Saturday afternoon at about 3:45PM, 15 minutes before closing, with a suitcase full of shoes in MAJOR disrepair. This was after 5 years of car-less pedestrian transportation on the mean streets of Chicago. I gave Fred's shoes that I loved, but that I had not cared for well for a LONG period of time. Many of them, I thought would have to be thrown away. The young man behind the counter smiled at me as I zipped open my case and lifted shoes, one by one, to place on the counter before him. And by "disrepair" I mean I set shoes up there with rusted nails driven down into the heels, gauges out of the leather heel, a cracked footbed, water-stained leather uppers, MOST had missing heel endcaps and the caps had been gone so long that the heels themselves were wearing down now: wood, plastic, rubber, splintered, uneven, fraying fabric. Some of these shoes I had been told before were throwaways by other cobblers, but they were too fine of vintage leathers and solid materials for me to just toss in the trash. I am SO GLAD I came to Fred's. About 9 pairs of good quality, yet extremely battered, leather and suede shoes, 1.5 weeks, and just $250 later I had 9 NEW pairs of shoes! Keep in mind, the price of a single pair of new leather boots can run you $250-$500. Plus, they have a sense of humor, are kind people, and Fred's son who runs the shop now is amazingly creative in what he can re-fashion out of nothing to fix a pair of your favorite shoes! The most expensive shoe repair in California only wanted 15 dollars to replace the tiny heel tips on my shoes but I stupidly brought them to Peoria with me and Fred's charged 23 dollars. cAlso I saw them charge huge amounts for tiny projects on bags, etc while I waited. Way overpriced. read more

I'm so happy this place exists! I've got a small leather backpack that I use for absolutely everything, so naturally something was bound to tear. One day, one of the straps ripped off!! I called Fred's and they said no problem. I brought the bag in and they told me exactly what they were going to do and I paid less than $20 for the repair. The best part is, it's better than it was when it was new!! On the same backpack, the magnetic buckle ripped off. Same deal, I brought it in, paid a very reasonable price, and got it back in better condition than I bought it in. So happy I found this place!! read more

I recently took in two pair of shoes; I had one pair resoled and the others stretched. I received both pairs in better condition than they were when they were first purchase. I quick Google search lead me to Fred's. I had worn down the rubber soles on the heels of my riding boots and was in need of a repair. This is the first time I went to a show repair store, so I was not sure what to expect or the price of the repair. Although the store is quite small and busy, someone helped me right away. I went in on a Tuesday and said I needed my boots by Saturday, but they were able to have them done by Wednesday afternoon. Perfect! When I received by boots, there were a couple of places where the paint/lacquer they used on the heels wound up on the leather part of my boots. I wish they had been a little more careful, but I was able to wipe it off with a damp clothe. Overall I am satisfied. In case any of you were wondering, I paid $16.50 to have both the soles in the heels replaced. read more

I took a horse blanket to Fred's to be repaired and it looks absolutely awful. It had several tears in it. It is a faded blue and they patched it with a whole bunch of thick, black leather-look vinyl patches. I wasn't expecting it to look like new, but they say they repair awnings and canvas, so I expected it to at least look like they put some thought into it. Hadn't done business there for a few years... It will be a long time, if at all, before I go back. read more

I was looking for a place to replace a long zipper in an otherwise very serviceable winter parka. Fred's did a great job for a very fair price, about $50. The sewing is perfect. You would never know the zipper has been replaced. The coat was ready a few days earlier than they had said, and they sent me an email when it was ready. They used a high quality YKK zipper that is unlikely to fail. I was in a store this past weekend and saw some coats similar to mine selling for $450. So for $50, I feel like I've got a great new, warm coat for the next 10 years. read more

Dropped off a pair of Nike Air Max Ken Griffrey 24 shoes to repair the stitching at the top of the shoe due to unraveling. When I returned the next day, my shoes were ruined and resembled Frankenstein stitches... Instead of restitching following the existing stitches, they cross-stitched overlapping the original design. I honestly had 50-100 extra stitching holes throughout my shoe. I asked for a full refund, the owner FRED'S SON refused and told me that's the best he could do. I guess that's why FRED'S SON asked for payment upfront when I dropped the shoes off. My gut feeling was right all along. I was literally worried about my shoes all night long and I see why. Horrible customer service and shoe repair. I wouldn't bring in a pair of Payless or Walmart special shoes let alone a $150 pair of shoes for repair at this place. I was referred by a friend. I've been there twice to have small patches sewn on my leather vest. The first time they charged me $5 and the second time they charged me $6 plus a $1 fee to run debit. They don't even measure and place it for you. You have to ask for a ruler and place it yourself. I've had ALOT of patches sewn on over the years and no one has EVER had me measure and place one myself. Not to mention charging me $5 and $6 for 90 seconds of work!!
