I'm not really sure how to go about this review. I was under the impression that this place takes in animals and let them live out their life. But when I got there, it kind of seemed rundown. I did find out that they are trying to sell it. I went to donate a bunch of dog food and treats. I think if you were a bringing a pet here to get a new home I would ask a lot of questions. The lady that took my donation was so sweet and she had tears in her eyes and how much food that I brought to donate I think in these times people are really struggling. read more

Halfway between Edmond and Guthrie, Free to Live is a haven for abandoned dogs and cats. Operating on donations, the sanctuary is staffed by employees as well as volunteers and they can always use volunteer help socializing the animals (or doing a number of other jobs). The kennel is large and very clean and the dogs get lots of personal attention and care. The cattery is impressive- both an indoor enclosure and an outdoor run so the cats have access to fresh air and won't get bored. Also, in a separate building they care for FIV, FLV, and other special needs cats who are available for adoption to loving, patient homes. Adoption fees are very reasonable and paperwork is not onerous. There are reasonable requirements in the adoption contract (cats must stay indoors, must have a fenced yard for dogs) but those are basically common sense and proper animal care. FtL is always filled to capacity (and have a long waiting list) so they more than likely can't accept an animal you can no longer care for but if you're looking to adopt a new family member, they're the place to visit. Look for representatives at adoption fairs at local PetsMarts or visit the sanctuary itself to spend some time getting to know the animals. read more

DO NOT go to Free to Live for a cat!!! They get tons of feral cats then try to adopt them out, then when the cat has to come back because all it does is hide under a bed or attack people, they act like it is your fault! Like you abused the cat some how, even though you can't get near it without it hissing at you or trying to bit you. They give the line "oh, well it cat feral when it got here, but we've fix that and it loves people now." That's bull****! Once a cat is feral, it is either feral for life or it takes YEARS for it to trust humans (not 5 months). read more

I debated for years about getting a cat, but when I was ready, I wanted to adopt from an animal rescue. After researching online, I discovered Free to Live. I called and set up a time to meet with Casey. She walked me through the process of filling out the paperwork prior to meeting a cat; they are very protective of their animals. There is a feline house and I was pleasantly surprised to find how clean it appeared and smelled. After our cat chose us, we left him there to complete the application to adopt. A couple of days later--we came in on Saturday, so it would be Monday before a decision would be made--I received a call that our application to adopt had been approved. The staff was caring and made the process so easy. There's an $80 adoption fee and a contract you must follow, but it is reasonable. I love that the cats have all their shots, are spayed/neutered, and are microchipped. They give you their vet records and tell you when they need their next round of shots. If there are any problems, you can give them a call. Casey even gave me her personal cell in case I had any concerns. I was even invited to join their Facebook alumi page! It's a little out of the way, and the dirt roads aren't in the best of condition (don't go within a few days after it rains), but it is worth the drive. Their physical address is at 9150 S. We had taken in an abandoned dog and when she passed about three years ago, it left a hole in our hearts, we had another dog and she was lonely too. Within months of her passing,we took the other dog to the Edmond Animal Shelter and were not able to find an adoptable dog that was friendly with her. We went to Free to Live without her and met some wonderful dogs there, brought her back up there and found a senior dog and brought her home with us. We have since donated many items, food, towels and a dryer and have returned to pet the cats and visit. Wonderful place that truly cares about the animals. read more

Had a terrible experience with FTL. Adopted a cat that was feral but was told by staff that he was fine. The cat hissed and bit the entire time i had him. When i brought him back i was not only denied a refund or the chance to look at another cat but was berated by staff, telling me that i was probably the problem. They essentially scammed me out of money. There are plenty of other, better shelters in OK to adopt a cat. These people have feral strays they pass off as domesticated pets.
