Brought my first dog in last year to be spayed and after that I would have recommended the humane society to anyone and everyone, but I just brought my second dog in to be spayed yesterday and it was no where near the same experience I had last year. They were rude, and rushed everything....they called me early to pick my dog up saying she was hysterical and when I arrived she was completely incoherent and couldn't open her eyes or stand up on her own... she was like this for 12 hours. So far I think the surgery went OK however the experience had all my nerves an absolute wreck.. It felt like they were inconvenienced by everything and I wished I had never taken her there. It felt like some back door surgical experience to be honest and I just wouldn't recommend that to any pet owner even if they do know what they are doing. Just go to your vet and pay extra, it will be worth it to know you are in good hands and cared for. read more

I really pondered over writing this review, but several of my friends said I should share my experience in case it could help others, so here it goes. OK Humane Society brought puppies to the OKC Convention Center on November 6th. I work for the convention center and went down to visit the puppies, I held one in particular that I fell in love with. When me and my coworkers told the Humane Society staff that we actually live here they said we could adopt these dogs. I went through the approval process with my landlord to finally be allowed to have a dog and then emailed the humane society the following week saying I held the sweetest little terrier girl and was interested in adopting her. They didn't respond to me, but the foster did email me. At first, she was very pleasant and said she would love for me to see her again, but as I continually asked what days/times worked for her schedule she would not give me anything. Finally, I was supposed to visit the puppy on November 22nd. I told her I got off work at 1pm probably and asked her what times after that would be available. She would not give me times and told me to just text her when I got off, which I did. I asked if 2:30pm worked for her to which she did not respond for an hour. When she finally responded, she said her husband was working from home that day and had a meeting at 3pm and having someone new in the house would cause disruption with the dogs. I told her I didn't mind waiting till after his meeting, which she didn't reply to but instead sent me a photo of a different dog saying that this other dog was available for adoption. An hour went by before I asked if meeting that day was still a possibility or if it would need to be rescheduled. She responded quickly and said it would need to be rescheduled. I told her that that was fine and asked what days/times worked for her. I received no response for about 4 days and I texted her 2 of those days. I finally called the Humane Society as I was getting concerned and didn't know what else to do. I had also stressed early on that I was leaving for a cruise December 9-14th and wanted to make sure everything was lined up as I didn't want to miss this opportunity. They said they would get in touch with the foster for me. The next day I received a text from the foster saying that they were out of town for Thanksgiving, but would be back that Sunday and would get in touch then. I waited till Sunday when I realized she was not going to reach out to me, so I texted her that evening. Five days passed with no reply, so I went to the Humane Society in person with a friend. I wish I could say my experience was any better, but the man we talked to was saying that since she isn't even up for adoption yet (she was to be spayed on December 9th and per their standards they don't go up for adoption till 2-3 days after) that I was getting a more "backstage pass". I wasn't the one that brought puppies to events that weren't ready to be adopted but telling people they could adopt them. He then told me that the foster was actually thinking of keeping her. Something that she never communicated with me. The next day she texted me back and I finally told her that I went in person and they told me the truth, which she laughed at and said her husband had gotten attached to her but they hadn't decided on if they would keep her yet. I asked multiple times for clarity as I didn't want to buy the rest of the necessities needed if I wasn't actually going to be able to adopt her. I had already bought some items with the intention of getting this puppy and didn't want to waste more money if this wasn't a possibility. She would not give me an answer. The day I drove back from my cruise I asked if they had made a decision and she said they were keeping her and then she tried to show me other dogs that were nothing like the dog I wanted. This whole situation was really frustrating as I did my best to remain professional, pleasant, and polite, but the lack of honesty and clarity made what was to be an exciting and fun experience, miserable. I would have respected this process more if she had made her intentions clear and I wouldn't have felt like I was led on for an entire month and wasted money that I can't get back. I read some other reviews and caught another review with a very similar experience to mine. I have friends who foster for other organizations and they tell me that they would never show dogs at events that aren't ready to be adopted and have never seen places do that before, but humane society has shown puppies at multiple events that they knew weren't spayed/neutered and by their standards, they don't put them up for adoption until 2-3 days after that. I genuinely don't know how else I could have been clearer with my intentions to prevent all of this from happening, but I'm pretty heart broken from having my hopes up for a month and I don't want others to share this experience. read more

Came in to look at dogs with my husband and found one we were interested in adopting. Everything was good until we brought our dog back for a meet a greet. There's an employee with short curly hair that was immediately rude. Didn't introduce herself or anything and immediately began talking down to us as if were stupid. Instantly ruined the entire thing for us and we left without a new pup. Horrible attitude. read more

We went to have a look around, not sure whether we were going to adopt or not. The place is clean and very well run. The best part is that they let you walk around and spend time with the animals. The Central Oklahoma Humane Society's facility on north Western is immaculately clean, well lighted, and quite spacious. (In other words, it's quite the opposite of some of the local animal shelters.) The staff here has always been friendly and exceptionally helpful when I've visited -- a real plus for those who seek to adopt but need hand holding and/or information prior to adopting. The parking here is good but somewhat limited -- this is, after all, prime real estate. Adoption fees include spaying/neutering, basic testing, prophylactic treatments, and more. Tremendous effort. Seriously good cause. Yay. read more

My husband and I adopted Lacey from OKHS in 2016. She has been wonderful, but not the entire time we have had her. She was so scared when we got her and she yelped like you hit her when you try to touch her face. Since we had her right eye removed for swelling and protruding she has been so much better. She still shakes like she is scared when picked up but she loves her face rubbed. My husband has since died and she misses him but she has truly been comfort for me. We came into this adoption center after looking for a dog to adopt online for over a month and being unsuccessful. We were approached by a young woman asking what kind of dog we were looking for. We told her we wanted an older dog, low maintenance, preferably lazy and we were pointed in the direction of a precious little Basset Hound. We took her out for a stroll and fell in love. We were able to adopt this pup for $150 and we were in and out of the adoption center in less than thirty minutes even though there were plenty of people buzzing around. The dog was chipped, spayed and current on vaccinations. When we got her home we realized they didn't mention anything about flea and tick treatments and when we called the said hers expired two days ago so they let us come in and get her treatment. I highly recommend this adoption center for anyone looking for a new pet. Adoption is always best for pets and there are always new animals coming through from puppies and kittens to seniors. The employees here were professional and experienced and eager to answer any questions. I would definitely recommend The Humane Society to anyone! read more

I'm in the market for the world's cutest puppy. I'm very particular about what I want, but nonetheless the staff here tried their darnedest to find me a furry friend. You walk in and immediately find a bunch of puppies in little pens all around the room. Apparently their animals go rather quickly, so this is the only area with animals in it. There were probably only 10 puppies and like 10 cats. They of course had a 'get to know you' room which were all in good use. The staff looked up a few puppies that were going to be available soon - that was super cool. The only downside for me was the smell (what can you do?) and the lack of an available selection. But how awesome is that so many puppies are in good homes right now? read more

I have really appreciated the humane society in the past but I am frustrated with them over the past several months. You cannot access the website for information without their donation pop-up blocking. It does not go away when you select no thanks. Tried to reach spay/neuter clinic by phone but recording refers you to website and I must apparently pay to access the website. I understand they have needs and I have given when able in the past but this harassment for money does not endear or make me want to donate again. read more

I was very serious about adopting one of their animals listed as an "email to meet me". I am very familiar with this adoption process since I had an attempt just a few weeks ago to look into adopting one of their "email to meet me" animals but another couple had beat us into meeting him and ended up adopting. This time, I was planning ahead and going to come in before opening and then the day that Munich (the dog available for adoption) was scheduled to visit the facility, I had received an email early that morning saying he was sick and would have to postpone his visit to another day when he was better. Well, OVER a week had gone by and no response. I took the initiative to ask the adoption manager to see if he was feeling better yet. I emailed TWICE, once several days ago and one just yesterday. I just received an email today saying "Turns out, the foster decided to adopt Munich. If anything changes, we will let you know." I understand foster parents become attached and end up adopting but I'm more pissed off that they possibly lied (or maybe he was actually sick. Who knows.) But the fact that they found out the foster ended up adopting and I had to reach out to THEM to find the news out really irked me; instead of them telling me directly the foster chose to adopt. I was really mad but also disappointed that I didnt get the chance to meet him. I think the situation was handled poorly. The facility is fairly clean, some of the staff are friendly but I've encountered some who weren't when I went in to meet the other puppy a few weeks ago. This place gives me roller coasters of emotion. Either I really like them or they do something that changes my mind. read more

This is a great place for a small group to volunteer. There were enough projects to keep all of us busy and get to play with the cats and dogs too. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The work is by no means glamorous, but it felt awesome to see how you are directly helping the animals by helping take care of their most basic needs. It was easy to find things to help with and I even got to walk one of the dogs. I really enjoyed myself while volunteering here and I plan on coming back again soon! read more

I am a foster for OK Humane and have volunteered at the Adoption Center. I have seen first hand all the great work that everyone in this organization does. When I drop off my fosters to be adopted the staff always takes the time to listen to me complain about how hard it is(they probably have to do this with every single person) and then reassure me that they will find them a great home. Yesterday, my daughter took our dog to Central Oklahoma Humane Society Spay Clinic. After the surgery, my daughter expressed concerns about the looks of the incision. They dismissed her concerns, wouldn't let her speak to the vet, and sent her home. This morning, she rushed our dog to the emergency vet. She suffered massive internal bleeding, a stroke, and cardiac arrest. Today, we lost our beloved Trixie. I just feel for public concern and in memory of our sweet pet, her story needs to be told. read more
