I've been looking for a spot to simply meditate in silence with others who share similar…read moreorientations and intentions for a few years. There's something about sharing that space with others that amplifies it's power (for me). I am globally familiar with Parmahansa Yogananda's teachings and resonate with what I know of them. As of the time of this review, the meditation hall is open for structured meditations Friday and Sunday evenings, and Sunday mornings. Website will have details. My first time on the grounds, I stopped by the welcome desk and was greeted by two friendly volunteers that shared information about both the founder and the Sunday morning process in general. They were warm and helpful, and I felt welcomed. There seems to be no distinct age, race, or gender that is predominant, though I have found fewer younger than older attendees. In the hall itself, there are two entrances facing west and one facing east which also serve as exits. I have found no particular designated route in or out. There is praying/singing/chanting at the beginning of the one hour Sunday morning meditation, and at the top of each hour for the extended evening meditations. Total time of silence in the one hour Sunday morning meditation is about 30 minutes. In my handful of visits, I have not felt like an outsider, or as if I was being judged or indoctrinated. I'm grateful to have found a silent safe haven of sorts in the middle of the city.

They gave me a welcome packet that had several free books and a schedule of the events. I enjoyed the meditation and the chanting. It was pretty much what I expected. There were a diverse group of ages and races there. Grounds were very well maintained and it would be nice to just go there to meditate and be outdoors. I would probably go there more often if it was closer to my house.

I was a little disappointed that I had to wait over an hour to get 3 bags for a member. A minister came in a hour after me and was greeted with the up most helpe and joy. When I asked for assistance I was ignored and told to wait longer. To my understanding members have been held to be totally reliant on the organization although the supports are good but make sure you are providing independence and encouraging it. I'm here giving a review on behalf of a sister in Christ who was failed by the system and is…read moregetting nothing better from what she's relaying to me. She grew up in homeless shelters and group homes from all over Arizona since she was about 7 years old. Her mental health was incredibly damaged and she was unable to finish school due to learning disabilities. From being forced to one home to the next and never receiving even an ounce of love and affection the way Christ would to the point where she landed in what I believe was a cult. This is where I met her. We got out together and began to seek Christ further together and she has been growing slowly and understanding more. She struggles sometimes and makes mistakes and doesn't understand sometimes. But in the time of her being at the dream center--she's worsened. Her faith has decreased and her mental health has as well. I've also discovered that some donations are meant to go to the women there but she has yet to receive anything or any help at all with finding work, re-applying for school, relearning basic life skills, and recovering in full. It became bad when she felt the need to sneak her phone back to reach me rather than use the phones so she can open up--to which, of course, I corrected her one as her sister in Christ. It's ever right to do things like that no matter the circumstance. But doing that led to her being placed outside in the dark alone with her phone on low battery and strange men passing by and making her uncomfortable for nearly 2 hours. When asked if she could come back inside and give back her phone so she can go to bed and feel safer, she was told to wait out there until 7 am. While outside, she was tempted to wander off alone away from the center even with the men giving her creepy looks and peeking around corners at her. The staff stood by and looked out at her and continued to talk as she stood at the door until she knocked to be met with another "7 am." This is what began to boil my blood. I hadn't heard of the place before but when I looked it up I was shocked to find that they're centered around rescuing women off the streets and preventing trafficking and providing care for those they welcome in. But to hear that they willingly put out a struggling 18-year-old with depression and a dwindling faith as a Christ-centered community and home for young women--it strikes a different cord. Upon getting there, I found out that she discovered some...odd conditions. Such as bugs and mold. But none of that truly matters because it's a roof over her head and clothes on her back as well as food for your belly. And I encourage her to be grateful for the things that God places in front of us. But it's hard to encourage her if she cant call me even from the phones there due to restrictions let alone be able to feel confident that she is in good Christ-loving hands. I just continue to pray that God guides her steps and places a hedge of protection over her. I may only have one side of things but the things I'm hearing don't settle well in my stomach or my heart...I pray that those in the center are able to express more compassion towards the people they bring in. Especially young women who don't have many people to depend on outside of Christ...God will provide. God bless you and I hope that things improve with this place. Im still gonna continue to raise money for her to get her back on track, God willing.

This is a big church so I had my doubts going into the parking lot. I saw mini tram vehicles…read morepicking up people around the parking lot and thought I was going to an amusement park, but I was trying to keep an open mind. There were groups of people welcoming folks to enjoy coffee, muffins, information cards for small groups, ministry and multi-generational families meeting in seating areas. I was a bit overwhelmed by it all in a good way. The worship was great but what was even more awesome was seeing a bunch of people getting baptized up front and on the screen during the songs. Each time someone came up from the water there was cheering and singing. It gave me such joy for them! Praise God! The message was great and I filled out a newbie card. Someone called me the very next day to welcome me and tell me about ways I could plug in. The options are endless and there is definitely something for everyone. I took some pictures of what is going on in the next week as an example of the activities I saw posted. The church is a hub for this community providing food, clothing, legal advice, etc. It is really a great resource. I think you should give it a chance. While it is a large church, you can be known as a part of the body of Christ. It is a matter of finding where you fit. I will have to try out the small groups and edit my review on those opportunities for you guys later. For now, I say jump in and know Jesus is here waiting for you. Just show up.

The teachings for 6th grade is very wrong not only did they preach that my sons feelings are wrong…read moreand not valid but that he needs to only listen to god and what god tells him to feel, when The Bible does not teach to completely ignore, suppress, or deny human emotions, but it strongly advises against letting fickle feelings dictate actions, directing believers instead to filter emotions through Scripture. Faith is meant to take precedence over feelings, especially when emotions contradict God's truth. My family and I have been coming here for over 10years . We've noticed a lot of lessons not making since at all definitely not something we know from the Bible but words that twist it . Coming here used to feel so nice but lately it doesn't it just feels like an inconvenience.

Just to give you the basics: Service is Sunday at 10:30a for about 1 hour, communion is done every Sunday, they have fellowship for 5 - 7 minutes about 20 minutes into the service. The service is about 1/3 music and 2/3 preaching. The church was designed by Frank Wright, so it has the mid-century architecture. The land was a date farm back in the day. They have a food pantry, which is open after service.

The architecture inside and out is beautiful…read more The music leader, Carl, is genuine and talented. The worship music (in the 2nd service) is 'contemporary' and is more easily chanted than sung. The minister has a close relationship with the congregation and ministers real life concerns. They recently removed the bench seating (BOOO), that had been so very interesting, the benches had been carpeted with the same material as the floor, it took me a visit or two to become accustomed to it but now it is gone. The church is very community oriented, for many many years they offered a "Dickens Holiday" to the public--a marvelous winter wonder, that is now gone (donated to a church in Louisiana, post Katrina). The facility has a pipe organ, which I have never heard used.

It's a small, community-based church so don't expect a mega-church. The pastor is humorous and honest with his anecdotes. His sermons are well-grounded in scripture but really take into account modern life. They seem to be an active church with lots of study opportunities and opportunities to get together. They'd recently started a study focused on a book called Good Sense about dealing with finances and debt from a Christian perspective. Too bad I wasn't going to be in town long enough to join it. I wrote a prayer on a comment card and got a phone call a couple weeks later from the associate pastor just checking in on how I was doing. That was nice. If you're looking for a community-based church, you might like it.

It took 4 weeks for him to acknowledge or even say hello. The rest of the church was lukewarm at best and the greeters made no effort. The pastor should learn some skills about reaching out to guests. The preaching was good, but Faith without works is dead honestly. After four weeks he finally said hello but made no effort to reach out if get to know me. Very disappointing behavior.
