This was definitely one of the things I wanted to visit while staying in Seattle after my best friend suggested to see this bridge troll. Parking was definitely a challenge since Street parking was full, so we ended up parking about a block or so away and made our way to the troll. Back before trolls were mostly found online they lived under bridges - which is exactly where I found the Fremont Troll on a recent visit to Seattle. Nestled under the Aurora Bridge, this concrete giant is a huge tourist draw, making parking in the area quite a challenge. I recommend visiting early in the morning, with coffee in hand, when you'll have time to marvel at the structure and ask yourself existential questions about its meaning and origin. And whatever you do, don't forget (like I did!) to snap the immortal Troll Selfie. Sigh. I miss the days when this was the only troll in town. Now they're a dime a dozen on the internet! This is such a fun little piece of Seattle culture. It was created in 1990, when there was an art competition whose goal was to rehabilitate the area under the bridge. The area had become a dumping ground and haven for drug dealers. The piece, built later that same year had won the competition. Its a fun play on the norwegian folklore that includes a troll living under the bridge. It's basically a quirky little photo op. Parking can be tricky in the area, but check it out! 7/5/19 Three years ago in some pictures, you may notice the trolls eyes are blue and are looking down at you in some photos. Other photos the trolls eyes are silver and looking down at you. Finally, in some photos, the trolls eye is open on the left side and some times it's open on the right. This troll is not just stone. This troll has put with humans for decades. It's just a matter of time before he has had enough. Upon visiting this hidden location under the bridge, I find that this troll has been violated by assholes. Graffiti has been spray painted on parts of this once masculine creature. Someone has given the troll lipstick, painted nails and a few other things. This is not how the artist had envisioned his creation. This work of art is worth 5 stars, but how it looks now is worth 2 stars for someone trying to be cute. One of the touristy things to see when in Seattle. Large troll structure under a bridge. Nothing spectacular but cool to see. Gets very crowded so time your visit carefully. I'm assuming the earlier, the better, if you want a clean shot with no one in it. I went around 2 PM on a Sunday and there were children running and climbing around everywhere. Hey hey there's a troll under the bridge and he swallowed up a Volkswagen bug in a fit of all his madness of being stuck under the bridge! Who doesn't love a troll under a bridge I mean it's the perfect spot for such a creature to thrive and take ownership of the bridge and all who cross under it! So I walked up to the top of the trolls head sat down on his head and chilled for a good few minutes wile listening to the sounds of the rushing traffic hitting the gap a few inches above my head a few times every few seconds the sound was awesome and fit the troll scenario perfectly as he indeed is under a bridge! The troll has a Volkswagen hubcap for a eye and a huge claw like hand that might reach out and grab you but then again you never know if he's already full from eating the Bug! Overall this is a mellow little spot to kill some time and check out a really cool art piece if your in the area stop by and say hi as I'm sure the troll loves visitors! read more

Out of all the years of me living in Seattle, I've never paid a visit to the Fremont Troll. It's in a very cute neighborhood under a bridge. When I went there was a lot of people. A lot of tour buses make their stop here and people just unload and load onto the bus. We got lucky and found a parking right in-front of the attraction. It was kind of hard trying to take a decent picture in front the troll. So many people, and not a lot of room. The maintenance of the troll was pretty clean, but unfortunately there was a gang related (lol) symbol painted in top of his poor head. I would definitely recommend seeing this big fella. It's like a one and done type of thing. Good to add to your bucket list of things to do while in Seattle. read more

You'll probably only spend about 5-10 minutes here depending on how long the line is for taking pictures with the troll (if you want pictures with it). You can climb up near the nose, but you might need to grip onto the side to haul yourself up. All the kids stomping around the troll and getting in the way of everyone's pictures didn't seem to have any issues though. I didn't think the sculpture was THAT interesting and it didn't seem to be super significant based on the description on the plaque, but it's free and literally right next to a bus stop, so I can't complain! Overall, the Fremont Troll is an interesting sculpture to stop by if you have time/in the area, but I personally don't feel like you would be missing out on much if you weren't able to stop by, unless you're a hardcore Instaglammer. read more

Free tourist attraction found right under the 99 freeway. Although this troll may look a little frightful, it is harmless. My husband, our little dog girl and I came by on a Monday afternoon. We were very fortunate to find a parking spot on the same street as the troll (on 36th. Drive around a little bit, you may end up getting lucky finding a close spot). As we walked towards the famous troll, we were pleased to see that only one party of 3 people were ahead of us taking photos. So wait time for taking photos was relatively light. The 3 of us took a photo (we asked the party before us if they would take our photo) and then I took a few photos of my husband and our dog while they climbed around looking for a few spots to sit and stand. Just be aware that it is rather dusty if you decide to stand or lean on the troll. And just like that, we were done and walked back to the door. Everyone who comes to the troll is like this, so don't worry about waiting a while to get your chance with this creature. For this sculpture, I think it's pretty cool that it looks like he (I am just assuming the troll is a male) is creeping out from the ground and has a vintage VW bug gripped in his left hand. So if you happen to be visiting Seattle, make sure to make a quick stop here. You won't be disappointed. read more

A must see when you are in Seattle or Wallingford/Fremont neighborhood. The kids were entertained climbing, although it is dirty, dusty, and smells like urine. Still, it's a novelty art and a must see while in Seattle! Where else in the world can you find a giant troll under a bridge? This is an interesting sight to see if you are coming to Seattle. It is located across the bridge from Seattle and under a bridge. I would recommend coming here early so it is easy to find parking and avoiding other travelers. My friend and I arrived at around 9 am on a Monday and were the only ones there. We were able to snap a couple of pictures before another couple came. Getting onto the troll is slippery so be careful not to slip. Try to climb to the top. It might be a bit slippery so be careful! If you look closely to the troll, you can see what the material is made of and one of the hands is gripped to a car. The nose is kind of hallow and the hair is made of metal I think. If you turn around, you can see under the bridge and that's also a nice view. read more

When visiting Seattle, or locals alike, if you can't find any other excuse to visit the hip(ster) neighborhood of Fremont on the other side of the city, well here's at least one interesting, entertaining, and absolutely free reason why. If you've never laid eyes on this impressive 18 foot tall, one-eyed (made from a hub cap) 2 tons+ big guy, constructed by local artists out of wire and concrete, and a REAL classic "Slug Bug" 25 years ago, you should take 15 or 20 minutes out of your trip and pay homage to the unique Troll King of the Emerald City and be certain to snap some pics. Sure, he's a handsome enough fellow on his own; however, he doesn't mind if you crawl on top of him for a group photo (oh, the hilarity of my husband and I and our fluffy bods trying to scale this thing - you would think it was Mt. Everest - perhaps the perfect pic for holiday cards later this year even though Mr. Troll isn't donning his occasional winter garb - lol!). Highly recommend! Tips: *There are few parking spots available in the area, but a drivers (be it cab, Uber, etc.) do not seem to have issues with this as they were more than happy to drop us for a bit and come back and get us - keep the meter running. ;) **I'm not certain who does the upkeep on the Troll, but there is a plaque and a collection box on-site. Not certain if whoever still picks up the cashola, but no harm in taking some spare change or a few bucks to drop in to keep the dude graffiti free and dressed for the holidays. He's worth preserving. ***I'm not sure the Troll is a fan of Californians as the VW he has in his grasp has CA plates. From University District where we were staying, we took the 29 bus to Fremont, where it dropped us off at the bottom of the hill under the Aurora Bridge. As you walk up the steep hill, you are met by the Fremont Troll at the end of the bridge crushing a VW bugs in its hand. It's much bigger in person and the eye sort of creeps me out. He only has one that's marbled, so it's very noticeable. There are many spots to climb to and pose for a picture, so you are free to take your pick. Let me start off by saying I love unique, cool attractions/photo opportunities like this, typical Fremont style humor. The Fremont Troll, Seattle's signature! You must come visit this if and when you come to Seattle. This is a massive troll that is smashing a Volkswagen in his hand. It's great artwork available for the public that is located under the north end of the Aurora Bridge (Located on Troll Ave). Very easy to access (take an Uber or a Lyft). It's a short walk from downtown Fremont AKA the center of Seattle! It's a nice hike up a hill, but totally worth it. I love that you can actually climb on the troll Unfortunately I wasn't that brave to get my butt on him. I enjoyed the view from afar. This place is perfect for *children. Parking is easy! Overall, what's better than a giant troll under a bridge? *If you have a very sensitive child or one who frightens easily, this might be a good place to skip. Fremont is full of public art. The Fremont Troll is arguably the most famous one of them all. It is by far the public art piece that draws the most visitors. The troll is located underneath the Aurora Bridge and a short walk up the street from the main shopping/restaurant district in Fremont. The area near the Fremont Troll can get a little crowded. Particularly on the weekends when tourists stop by to take pics next to the troll. Watch out for incoming cars if you are standing near the curb as the area surrounding this public art piece is residential. To take a picture next to the troll might require a wait. If you are impatient, I suppose you could just do some Photoshop magic and crop out unwanted imagery. While I think people come here mostly to get a picture with the troll, it is worth taking a look at the whole piece. If you look on the bottom right hand side, the Fremont Troll is grabbing a Volkswagen Beetle. This public art piece does fit in Fremont and with the counterculture of this neighborhood. The Fremont Troll. What a cool place to visit. I have seen this troll many times on the Once Upon A Time series. I was told the troll was put there to detour drug dealers from conducting business under the bridge. After the troll was installed it became a popular tourist destination and the busy traffic from tourist eventually got rid of the sketchy people that would gather here. Seattle never ceases to amuse me with all it's quirks such as the Fremont Troll. I mean come on, it's an actual Troll that lives under the bridge! It's free to see and fun to take pictures with. I would come here only if you are already around the area. Parking: There are free parallel parking spots along the narrow street on your way to the Troll. The spots are usually full but you may get lucky and catch someone leaving. I can't imagine people spending more than half an hour here so the turnover rate should be good. Safety: If you decide that you want to climb the head, ensure that you have 3-point of contact. The fall is far and you'll land on hard uneven surfaces. You can probably break a bone or die from the fall. (Note: If you climb the head, you'll be in other people's photos as well. Be considerate). Watch out for the low hanging beam above as well. I think the best spot to have your picture taken is on the Troll's left arm. read more

From Pioneer Square, I took the 26 bus to 35th and Fremont which was about a 20-minute ride then, I walked a couple of minutes up to 36th and Troll. There were more than 5 hobos camped behind the Troll and the area smelled like piss, the Troll was vandalized as well...I'm not sure if it was the lack of sleep or the countless cups of coffee I've had which made all that tolerable.
