Sounds like some peeps were unhappy campers ...but that was not us! Everything from wine openers (I forgot ours), toothbrush (yup, forgot that too), flashlights, trail mix, local jams, gluten-free products (shout out to Nins) and more all topped off with free coffee. Get out of my face. They open early for those headed out to Big Bend and stay open late for weary travelers just making their way into town and realizing they have no way of getting inside the 3 wine bottles they brought for the trip. Not really a grocery store. If you are looking to get picnic supplies for Big Bend you had better get it in Fort Stockton. No deli meat no cheese save a package of kraft singles and the two loaves of bread were two weeks past the sell by date. No credit cards unless you spend 50 dollars. The only thing French about the place is the complete disdain for the customers needs. I would never return and never recommend. read more

We were the only people in what seemed to be a really neat store. After looking around for 10 mins without help I asked the clerk a friendly question about one of the local wines and it seemed like they were not interested in helping a customer and responded rudely. read more

Great spot to pick up drinks/snacks and other essentials! The staff is nice, they have a great selection of items for a small shop and they keep great hours. So thankful that French's is in Marathon! read more

What a hidden gem. The obvious spot in Marathon for coffee is V6 but I highly recommend trying the French Grocer. The barista was so nice and coffee drink special he put together was spot on. read more

We were soooo grateful to find this little grocery store on our way out to Big Bend. I was worried that they wouldn't have everything we wanted for our camping trip, but was pleasantly surprised and relieved!! An added bonus was their impressive selection of organic products. Small with limited but quality selection, a real 'mom & pop'. Of course its a bit more pricey than you would pay at a chain or larger grocer; its the only grocer in a teeny tiny town! Love that there are healthy (AND not healthy selections!) Beer, wine, grab-n-go sandwiches, sundries, and a limited selection of produce and meet. We stayed in town for a week in our mobile home (where we cook almost all of our food) and The French Co provided us with enough to make it work. I'm so impressed that this little town supports this grocery. Oh, $10 base limit for credit! read more

This place can be a lifesaver if you forgot to stock up on sunscreen, wine or snacks before heading into the Big Bend area. It is also the only place in town to get a mini-Whole Foods fix. Sure you won't find everything you need, but just enough to get you through a few days. read more

Really small but fun Hometown grocery store. There's really nowhere else in Marathon that you can purchase because it's so small of a town. Not even sure if you can quantify it as a town. More like a main street that you just passed through on the way to Big Bend. Has all the basic items including Marathon Collectibles. It's more like a convenience store but does sell meat and cheeses. Very clean and organized. Last time we were in there, I purchased a really cute little hat . This place was good, but a little pricey. But, the pricing is somewhat understandable since it is a remote area and they are the only grocer in town. We got some sandwiches for a hike. They were good, not great. You cannot get them made to order either. They were premade. Not a biggie since they were good. read more

Bad experience here last weekend. We were at the Cabrito Cookoff and came to town afterword to find something to eat. We were looking for groceries and my 5 yr old daughter expressed she needed to go to the bathroom. I asked the cashier where the restroom was while the rest of my family was picking out their ready made sandwiches and sides. She replied with, "there is no public bathroom." I in turn said "well we are just customers and my daughter needs to use the restroom while we are picking out dinner" She promptly told me to look on the door because again it states no public restrooms. We left without purchasing any merchandise and in turn went and ate at the Gage because we would prefer to spend over a bill on dinner than to give a dime to a business that does not appreciate us as customers. It is no wonder this establishment is going out of business. read more

Meh. Based on the website for this place, we thought we'd be able to get a to go lunch and other supplies for our trip into Big Bend. There were some really pitiful pre-made sandwiches in a cooler and something else that may have been chicken salad. Nothing was being made fresh as their website suggests. I asked for coffee and dude working there pointed to a counter where I guess there was supposed to be coffee to serve yourself. We bought a few things to attempt to support this tiny town's economy but could have gone without even going in. Also asked if they had a restroom, for PAYING customers who happened to have a 7 year old that needed facilities- we were told the closest one was the gage hotel. We ended up going to get coffee and breakfast at the coffee shop around the corner and it was AMAZING with a clean, positive atmosphere (and a restroom for our little guy). Believe the other reviewers that say the people at French Grocery are rude and act as though they could care less if the store stays open or not by the way they treat their customers. read more

Having lived in Texas all of my life (I'm one of the lucky ones!), I finally made it to Big Bend National Park. On my way to the park, I stopped in Marathon & happend to see the sign for the French Co. Grocer. Intrigued, I checked it out. I discovered tons of neat stuff that made my trip all that much more special. Specifically, the homemade cranberry & white chocolate cookies are heavenly! Another jewel is the banana chips (great for hikiing!) & the cool/re-usuable grocery bag. I was so impressed with my experience that I made sure to stop here on my way back to Austin. The service was friendly, the prices reasonable & the fact that it is a local business earns gold stars in my book! read more
