Red velvet and chocolate cake donuts
    Marli M.

The donuts were average but the customer service was solid! The man working gave us extra donuts which is always wonderful. The red velvet wasn't really distinctly red velvet just tasted like a donut. It was just a normal donut shop inside but they had a lot of options.

What was left of the delicious pastries! ;)

Sadly, we found this gem on our last day in Alpine. Probably good that we did, otherwise I might have eaten my weight in fluffy, tender, delicious pastries! The cake doughnuts were some of the best I've ever eaten and the long John with Bavarian cream was a melt in your mouth cloud! Missed the opportunity to get a picture because we scarfed them down so quickly- trust me, they were beautiful!

I don't remember Cow Dog being here before so after driving by a few times and deciding I could do better than McDonald's as I was leaving town, I dropped in to see what they had to offer. The cashier was friendly and when her credit machine wouldn't work after a bit and all I had was $8 cash, she was gracious and gave me what I wanted at a dollar discount. Extremely reasonable prices for the caliber of breakfast burrito I received. I got the bounty burrito and it was definitely worth the wait! Packed full of roasted potatoes, freshly sautéed bell peppers, chunks of breakfast meat and flavorful egg I was bummed I was leaving and wouldn't be able to enjoy another one on a different day. There's ample inside seating and even more patio seating. There's free street parking, but take into account it's on a one way so plan accordingly. I think people might pass it often because there was a sign on the other one way back to remind you where to turn. I hope this place lasts a long time like all my other favorites up there. Support local businesses when you travel through because you never know what simple delights you'll enjoy unless you try.

The first time I went to check it out I was offput by the QR code ordering nonsense. The employees were completely locked to their phones doomscrolling and it was difficult to get anyone's attention. Food was pretty weak, but acceptable for a diner. Price was ok. Then tonight I thinks to myself, I can't sleep, I should try that diner again - so I go out there at 1:30a and all the employees are hanging out in the parking lot playing with a car and tell me the diner is closed. Come back in a few hours. If you're driving through Alpine and you want a mediocre burger that isn't going to end up costing you $45, maybe it's worth a stop (it isn't) - but definitely don't go a single mile out of your way for it. They do not care at all and they really want you to know that.

We were looking for a nice place to have dinner while staying in Alpine, TX. This fit the bill!…read more The restaurant is in a yellow house with an "R" at the top. There was an American Flag and a Texas flag flying out front. We walked in and waited for someone to greet us and seat us. After we were at our table, drink orders were taken. When our water was brought out, we were also given some Honey Pecan Biscuits with butter. They were warm and I liked the pecans in it! Hubby & I shared everything. We started with a cup of Jalapeño and Cilantro Soup. It's a cream based soup. I couldn't detect much of any heat from the Jalapeños and the cilantro was pretty much hidden. Maybe a sprinkling of fresh cilantro on top would have made it more pronounced. It also needed to be served hot. We then got the 14oz Ribeye which came with mashed potatoes & green beans. This was a great plate of food! It came out hot! The person who brought it out waited until we cut into it to see if it was acceptable. We've never had any staff person do that for us before! It was a little under done on one side, but the other was perfect. We almost finished the plate. It was delicious! Lastly, we got the Chocolate Bread Pudding Tamale. It comes wrapped in a corn husk that it is cooked in. You remove it and eat the bread pudding. It was gummy in a good way, as hubby described it. It needed the fresh strawberries & ice cream that came on the plate. We really enjoyed our dinner! Our server, Jordan, was very efficient & made it a nice experience! We probably won't travel this way again, but if we did, we would definitely return!

The ambiance is more on the utilitarian side not super classy or trendy but where this place shines is in the food. We ordered the carne asada tacos and the chips and salsa. They looked really good and on the appetizer menu so I got them. Asked for the salsa flight but waiter said the prep guy did not come in that day so they had no salsa (none at all)! So o ordered the guacamole (which he competed). Also got a Jamaica juice that was so large I had to get a to go cup when we were ready to leave. The guacamole was house made but it did lack some flavor. It needed a punch of garlic and some salt. Only thing I could add was the salt from the table. Otherwise it was good and chunky. The nachos came out and they were massive. I was able to eat about 10 chips before giving up. My provider and I said we should have shared. They are loaded with meat, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico, and pickled red onions. I have no complaints bout the taste as it was all very flavorful and seasoned well. There are not a lot of options for food in town but I would eat here again.
