A chocolate croissant should be flaky, tasty and easy to eat. None of those describe what I had at this bakery. I was sure after seeing a working kitchen next door that I would get a fresh pastry. I had visited FP for the first time a few days ago. The coffee was just ok. Today, I had a lunch meeting at my house so I decided to get salads from the FP. I used the online app to order, giving the cafe over an hour to put together six salads. When I arrived, I walked into chaos. The employee who first spoke with me said it would be just a few minutes. Fifteen minutes later, another person walks out of the back saying their printer had broken so they had never received the order and "would I like to cancel?". By this time, I've been there 25 minutes. The place was packed. I finally got the salads and had to rush home and greet my guests at the door. Unnecessary stress. The salads were just ok. Came here with the intention of just getting coffee, but the menu looked so good we stayed for lunch! I got the rose cardamom latte which was SO good and the socca and eggplant tartino which was also incredible! All of the baked goods look fantastic as well, so don't expect to leave without one. Popped in on a Saturday afternoon. Was warmly greeted into the very charming bakery store front where the kitchen is adjacent. Several items sold out or were low on stock (always a good sign) so grabbed the ham and cheese croissant as a light lunch with a cold brew. The croissant dough was light and flaky as one would hope. The ham and cheese was standard, not any 'wow' factor there. The cold brew was very good, and I probably did not need to have any dairy added to it, but that's become my norm for a first time anywhere as many places do not execute a cold brew smooth enough to not need in my opinion. I'm going to say this as a Bostonian AND as someone who is French... but holy crap I've never been to a place that is ruder than this place. The number of times this barista rolled her eyes at me could've been a record. I have been to France numerous times and come from a French family. Never have I ever experienced such rude behavior in a cafe. Even in France, where they are known to not love the American people. On top of that, my coffee wasn't amazing. I don't think this place necessarily deserves a full review, but I will say that next time I find myself in Needham, I will not find myself at French Press. read more

Absolutely was the best experience I've had in a long time as a small bakery. We had just come from a wake up the street and just want a cup of coffee and something to eat so we weren't sitting in the rush-hour traffic going to Needham center put it into my yelp app and I clean up here so really was excited about trying it. The food was excellent. We had a spinach and feta cheese type of Pastry like a designer croissant, off those called something else they heated up for us. It was delicious. We also had coffee and I had a mulled apple cider, which was out of this world. I'm really looking forward to going back and trying some of their other items. They have a chicken and waffle dish on Fridays that sound quite interesting and then they also like specials. They also sell their own coffee. They have not very many seating they have one long table of like 10 seats and they have like another five or six seats at like a bar like a breakfast bar in the window. They also have several types of chairs and tables outside, which just wasn't warm enough for my husband to sit outside. We sat inside and they said not to worry don't rush, even though they close at 5 o'clock not to rush to take our time which I thought was really very nice. Stopped by to catch up with a few friends. I only trieda dessert and my brother tried the coffee. The raspberry based pastry looked really appealing and was decent. But definitely had better. Coffee was nothing special. But after reading the reviews I think this place is more known for croissants maybe next time will give it a try. Limited seating inside and have some outside as well. Breakfast sandwich was all right and the coffee was good, but the service was horrific. Jules, the manager, was shockingly dismissive when I didn't want an order that had been sitting for 10 minutes (I hadn't heard it called, though I did hear them call my other order). Her behavior came across as entitled and disturbingly unprofessional. I traveled from afar to visit this café -- it was on my bucket list after seeing it on Phantom Gourmet -- and the experience was incredibly disappointing. Excellent service, food and coffee. Not every coffee shop can pull off the drip coffee as well as the fancier coffees. This place has coffee on lockdown. It can get a bit crowded inside and the place doesn't have great flow but on a nice day, sitting outside is a positive experience. Their takeout options are nice if you don't want to sit with all the people. read more

I have been going to French press for years and it has changed a little. The drinks are great and have always been high quality. I think their baked goods have gone down though. I wouldn't recommend, most of the time I am disappointed. Although, my dad really enjoys the pretzel croissant and says it's the best he's ever had. Their food and oatmeal/yogurt parfaits are good. Really good coffee, pleasant service and it's a pretty little cafe. It has a nice display of baked goods and pretty decor for a small cafe. The only thing is it's kind of pricey both for the drinks and the food. I got the chicken empanadas which were way more expensive than I anticipated but tasty. I stopped in here after my morning, workout to get to get breakfast and support a local black owned business. When I walked in, I was greeted right away and asked if this was my first time in. It was, so they gave me the rundown. Everything is freshly baked daily and she pointed out the sandwiches and tartines menu which I had missed when I walked in the door. I ordered a smoked salmon tartine and a chai latte with oat milk. The chai came out right away and shortly after so did my food. Which I was amazing! The Tartine was also delicious, the salmon tasted fresh, the egg was cooked perfectly, so I got the right amount of drizzle to cover my whole tartine. The mixed greens on the side was a nice touch and rounded out the meal nicely. I ordered the tartine to have their since I had today off, but they also had sandwiches available that would travel better than a tartine with an egg on top. The café was a lovely place to sit and have breakfast. I chose a window seat to enjoy my meal, but they also had a larger table which got a lot of use by other customers while I was there. They also had plenty of outdoor seating. I had noticed the macaroons in the bakery window when I ordered, so on my way out I ordered two macaroons to go. These were baked very well. Sometimes in the states when you get macaroons, they taste kind of chewy or gummy. These macaroons were light and almost melted in my mouth as I took a bite, very good. Lots to recommend about French Press. Really good coffee, not too strong, but smooth and rich. Croissants are light and always fresh - I would recommend the chocolate croissant which uses a higher-quality filling than one gets in any bakery around here. Outdoor seating is a big plus, especially in late summer or early fall when it's too nice to dine inside. There is a good amount of foot traffic at French Press, but the staff manages to keep the place clean, and that's not easy to do with an outdoor dining presence along a well-traveled street. It's not a bargain place but, for the service and quality found there, one would expect to pay more. Certainly recommended, especially for a quick bite or for lunch. read more

I've been here twice because I work in the area. Coffee is good, I haven't tried any food. Both times I went, employees were unfriendly and the barista preparing the drinks had headphones on. If you place an online coffee order, you have to ask the guy with headphones if it's ready. He will then adjust his headphones so he can hear you and you have to repeat yourself. Just a review of the chicken sandwich, which is only served on Fridays. Easy order and pick up. The chicken sandwich was hearty and perfectly fried. Crunchy and tasty. The coleslaw could have used some flavor though. It was barely seasoned. It was fresh though. The bun was fresh and fluffy. Plenty of French fries. They're shoe shring though. Stopped in at least a handful of times now and I can attest that French Press is a solid breakfast spot for our family when we're in the neighborhood. So far, we've had the pleasure of trying two of their bialys (Bacon Egg & Cheddar & Tomato Basil & Mozzarella) warmed and we like the uniqueness of these; it's best described sort of as a bagel with some savory filling in it but if you have more time and can wait for a made to order item, do try the tartines. The smoked salmon version is superb and the portion was generous. On the busier days, their croissants were our go to. Get in there early though because the wait sometimes can be long! read more

I go here all the time. I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've ordered over the years. It is a very popular place and can be extremely crowded in the mornings. If the inside and outside tables are full, you can sit at the tables or benches on the common in front of town hall. read more
