After shopping hear for 40 plus years' they who took over this little neighbor hood grocery store destroyed the history and quality and the thing that made it possible to do all your shopping in one place....... I talked to the new manager who thought they needed to sell Sponge Bob Socks and stuff like novelty items instead of having fresh made food and items that regulars and folks who used to do all their shopping could buy. When they painted the outside of the building BLACK and changed it to neighborhood friendly to a place you can hardly recognize or enjoy visiting. I'm just really miss the old store when a Retired Airline Pilot and his beautiful wife ran the best little grocery store and bakery attached & where I fell in love with one of the check out girls. Meat is gross and usually 90% out of stock. And everything else in the store in stock is outrageously priced. Also the staff is utterly incompetent of helping with anything. I've been going here since the pandemic and appreciate the care and caution they seem to take. I found lots of vegetarian options and even some Lysol disinfectant wipes recently. I suggest going early in the day. The people were friendly and I've always found someone to help me get through my grocery list so I can get in and out quicker. read more

It is a plus that they're fresh groceries and they do have more than just the basics but the price here are so steep. I purposely have cut down on going to Whole Foods because of this. I love a small grocery store, especially a local one, but if I can go to Trader Joe's and leave with more than what this place has to offer than I won't he adding it into my rotation any time soon. I live across the street and love having this little grocery so close. They are perfect for a quick stop if you're craving a snack or needing a last minute ingredient for a meal. They also have a deli with very fresh meats and fish with friendly staff. I also deeply appreciate their beer room. They have a wonderful selection of ciders, crafts and popular brand brews that you can't always find at larger stores like HEB. My main disappointed with this store is their produce. It's limited and often not the best quality. More than once I've gone in and had to notify the cashier of something in the produce section that had expired or simply looked old/beaten up. I'm fairly new to the neighborhood after living near campus/walking distance from the small Wheatsville location on Guad. I've been upping my cooking game since moving & it's great to have a store with quality products a short walk away (after quickly realizing a reliance on neighboring WalMart meant seriously slim & chemical-laden food pickins.) So the prices ain't low (at least on meat/dairy/Cliff Bars), but I like how much diverse inventory they pack into a small space. It reminds me of living in Italy, where the grocery stores are all the size of this location; big stores get overwhelming when you end up zigzagging all over the place, walking a mile by the time you're done. Very friendly & helpful staff that is high in ratio to customers. Great ethnic food aisle for a non-ethnic/small store (packs a punch in limited space, as mentioned). So I'm LOVING their personal care product aisle selection, combined with the fact said items are 10% off on Fridays and frequently on sale, adding to the discount. They not only have several lotions etc that my previous Wheatsville & N Lamar Central Market discontinued, but the base prices are a little lower. They have testers for everything...if I'd known that yesterday, I'd have taken advantage cause I ran out of the Korean face moisturizer I get from Amazon or Sephora (which aren't current options due to Covid at its height) & I knew I had to get something different from a grocery store or pharmacy. Depending how the one I got elsewhere works (& if Fresh Plus stocks it), at least I can test other products, which are far more affordable than my long-standing $44 brand & worth trial & error since more natural products wouldn't kill me. I'm far from vegan, but they have great vegan selection & meat worth the price tag compared to WalMart & other horrible sources of hormone-pumped animals. So far, I've used great ground lamb & beef tenderloin. I'm not this vegan/all-natural type who cares to think about animal testing/treatment/slaughter, but I hope this store will help me swap out more meat products, personal care products & produce etc for more natural & responsibly sourced alternatives. It's a win-win since I just MIGHT avoid cancer by spending more on groceries. I'm also glad this store is making it easier to upgrade packaged foods like Pacific brand broths compared to the nasty stuff with literally 8-9x the sodium at WalMart. I'll have to ask them more about their meat & produce sourcing; seems pretty local & up to higher standards. My tenderloin was wagyu or like it according to an employee to whom I confessed sticker shock. I'm more concerned with whether animals for meat are pumped w/hormones than how they're treated (nothing against animals, I just prefer not thinking about it & care about HUMAN lives more than animal lives), but kinder animal conditions (& even perhaps slaughter methods) tend to go hand in hand with cleaner quality meat for human consumption. I've toyed with eating kosher meat a few times (because the slaughter is merciful & dignified), but considering there are like NO Jewish ppl here compared to my native Northeast, maybe I can learn more about the meat sourcing without getting squirmy. I'm confident local sourcing not from big gross Tyson type companies bodes well. It's ok if a rabbi isn't doing the dirty deed. Anyway, the personal care stuff is dangerous for my wallet & adds up, but if I spread it out & avoid that aisle outside of Fridays & actual need of something, I'll live. I'm almost out of body lotion & love the goat milk variety I got to sample today (in addition to the Andalou scented lotion I'd watched get discontinued at Wheatsville & Central Market & got to replenish today, having forgotten where I got my current bottle). Looking forward to trying the Alba aloe/mint shave cream, natural hair dye brand in RED that I've never seen at Whole Foods (since I use awful box stuff right now), other Andalou lotion scents (plus another brand I sampled) & of course, more meat, produce etc...The woman in the personal care aisle said local customers maintain demand for the diverse selection, so guess there are like-minded ppl in Allendale...products I love always get discontinued at the store or company level (RIP Liberté' Lavender Yogurt!), so hopefully the great inventory is maintained & maybe I can even convince them to order certain things they don't stock or that they run out of...What a rant Someone's procrastinating...will update in the future, so far so good. read more

I work right up the street from Fresh Plus Grocery, and even though I find some of their produce overpriced, I am happy to find a place that is not over crowded and clean to shop at. The last experience I had will be just that, my last. Store is great: reasonable prices (if you're comparing to Whole Foods), great stock of local goods, awesome selection of organic lotions and soap. The only downside (and it is a big one) is their unfriendly customer service. It is not only unfriendly it is downright horrible. The cashier didn't say a word to me, even after I asked how she was doing, the last straw was when she threw my receipt at me and instead of saying goodbye started to talking to the boy across the other register. It was an odd display especially for Austin where people are usually nice, or at the very least, tolerable of your "hello's" and "good-bye's" I would suggest some training on customer service. It really does make a difference. Guess I'll go to Whole Foods instead. read more

I really want to like this place, in part because it's locally owned (I think, right?), and in part because it is definitely the closest grocery store to my house. And if you just want some dry goods, they have a surprisingly good selection for such a small space. They carry a lot of local items, and the beer cave is pretty rad. In addition, the customer service is pretty consistently good, in my experience, and the store is rarely crowded. Unfortunately, after about 9 months of trying to use this store as my primary grocery, I've had to give up because the goods frequently aren't, well, fresh. I've often brought pork or chicken home, only to find that when I unwrap it to cook it, the same night, it has a really strong odor. Strawberries last a day, two if you're lucky. For items that have an expiration date, I highly recommend checking it. On separate occasions, I've nearly bought queso fresco that was already expired and dog food that was a *year* past its expiration. read more

First of all, their fresh organic grass-fed yada yada yada hippie beef is great! After a rough work day, I crave red meat for some strange reason, and I stop by Fresh Plus for a cut of steak. Their Nolan Ryan steaks do something weird though. When I rinse them under water (cold or warm), they change color from red/pink to grayish. The yada yada yada hippie organic beef doesn't do that. Hmmm...... Weird. So I stick with the hippie stuff now. I also love the prices on their coconut juice. One of the 3 brands they sell is always on sale. And that stuff is delicious! But as for their fruits and veggies, not so much. I've tried to buy there multiple times, but each time the poor quality of an entire stock of 1 or 2 things makes me question all of their fruits & veggies, so I don't buy. I go to HEB instead. They have organic stuff as well. Overall, this place is like Whole Foods but with fewer items at lower quality, for the same price (or sometimes higher). I really liked Sun Harvest, Sprouts was great too...not a huge fan of Fresh Plus, but hey at least there is a store there which can be convenient for some things. Tried their pre-cooked hamburgers one time. It did not taste like real meat and was seriously inedible, which is scary because I have never met a hamburger that I wouldn't eat. This was seriously kinda gross. Fast forward a month later and because I was simply lazy and didn't feel like cooking, I thought I would pick up two pre-cooked chicken breasts from the meat department and throw them in a salad. I should of learned my lesson from before. Pretty nasty "smoked chicken" breast which again did not even taste real. What's the deal, how do you make a chicken breast taste so damn awful??? Things like this seriously turn me off to the store and I really want to like it and support local, but there is just something about this store that screams "we really don't care about our work, products or want to put much effort into our store". Don't get me wrong, all the employees are great that I have dealt with in the handful of times I have been, but I keep trying to like this place and I actually just get more turned off. Just feels like there's no life or enthusiasm with the place or something...and I am not a weird, picky hard to please person. But if you can offer a cooked hamburger patty or chicken breast that is edible, something is wrong. read more

So does this place have an amazing compensation package or something??? The people that work here are freaking awesome! They never seem to be in a bad mood and are always polite and helpful. The cashiers always remember us and ask how our day is going. The guys working in the market are very knowledgeable and helpful. We buy a ton of fruit and veggies there and they are always fresh. There is also an option to request that they carry a certain product if they do not have it. They recently put in a "Beer Cave". They essentially converted a walk in cooler into a Beer Cave where the general public can shop the enormous Beer Selection they have now. Great Idea guys!!! About a week ago (and the reason I am writing this review) we were looking for a particular product and could not find it in the store. We asked the cashier where it might be. She made a call and within a few seconds the manager came out and said "wait right here I will go get it for you". At first I thought the cashier was having a bad day and that's why she did not sack my groceries but then it happened again with a different girl. Yesterday the guy rang up my purchases and then looked at me with this grin on his face and didn't make a move to sack my groceries. I walk with a cane so I had to lean my cane and sack my own again while he turned around and started chatting with the guy on the next register. I really dig the produce and meat department here. The gentlemen who work the meat counter are always informative, and quick to offer suggestions. I appreciate Fresh Plus because on the days I just need a few items, I can pop in, get what's needed and go. All in under 20 minutes. Service has always been efficient and friendly. This is the best store in Austin. I love it here. The staff is amazing. If you look confused they always ask if they can help. Today, they made breakfast sausage for my husband, just a quarter pound. They will get anything you want, quickly. The endeavor to sell local items,and they still have all the stuff you would find at a regular store. The produce and meat departments are cleaner and fresher than ever. I have been shopping at this store for 20 years, and honestly it has never been better than now that it is a Fresh Plus. I love Fresh Plus!! Perfect little grocery store in Allandale. It's my go-to for fresh produce. They have a great selection of organic (and not) products, as well as a great meat dept and beer cave. They are now open! I was told they opened Friday 2-3-12 which was earlier than they planned because of all the requests to open. The guy at the meat counter said the response from the neighborhood has been nice. They have a similiar set up as the previous two stores however there is no bulk section. A few different brands not unlike the regular grocery stores. They still have to get the bakery up and going. There are a few open shelves up I'm sure they will soon be filled. Everyone I spoke to was helpful. Overall, I'm pleased there is still a smaller store in this area. read more

I used to go here when it was sun harvest, and then again when it was sprouts. Honestly, I prefer it now as Fresh Plus. The management is nicer, the cashiers are nicer, the lines aren't as long, and the selection is larger. For people looking for the "gluten-free heaven" that was sun harvest, you won't find as much, but you'll certainly find a fair amount. They have an awesome beer cave with a huge selection of IPA's (which makes me very happy) and a massive selection of wines---something neither sprouts or sun harvest ever had. In response to the meat comments below, I've never gotten brown meat from this store, and I go here almost every day. They get fresh produce and meat in every few days, and it's one of the few stores where you can buy fresh, un-frozen chicken breasts. Customer service is awesome. Let me tell you the coolest story: I had an exposed nerve in one of molars (ouch) over a holiday weekend, with no pain-killers, and went in needing help. The holistic guy wasn't there, so the front-end manager called him on his cell phone (this is on a Sunday afternoon, mind you), and asked him for help. He directed me to some clove oil, which solved my problem. I am sold by this place. I'll shop here till I move or they go out of business. Hopefully neither. read more

So it's an old fashioned neighborhood grocery store which is a big plus for me. I don't live in the neighborhood but we go there at least once every two weeks to get something. Usually salad makings for Saturday night dinner with the extended family. Up scale and posh they are not but then I don't expect them to be. They are a cheerful little grocery store that tries to please everyone in it's area and that says a lot. We buy the odd thing there and sometimes I go there and find treasures - like flavored Topo Chico (lemon lime and punch) as well as the plain. They have friendly butchers and very nice check out people who tell you what they like to get there and what's better for your value if you get to be a regular. We shop at CM and HEB but I find Fresh Plus kinda charming and reminds me of when I was young.. read more

Yes. I am so sick of fighting the hundreds of thousands of people found in any given HEB at any given time. Fresh Plus has all of my regular needs, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the skincare items I normally buy at Whole Foods (because no one else carries them), are a couple of dollars cheaper at Fresh Plus. Great news! They also have a good selection of locally farmed eggs. I have no complaints. I also have to disagree with the other reviewer who is actually mad that the kids at Fresh Plus don't talk to them enough. Are you kidding me? I find the constant, automatic, insincere greetings that retail employees are forced to give to be completely annoying, and I'd rather not have to stop and chat and assure every employee that I'm fine as I try to shop. Wait, I do have a complaint. The baked goods wall is too overt. They're just sitting there, uncovered, right in your face! OK, so last night was first time ever going into Fresh Plus. They have the Great Bean Bars that hubby and I wanted to try, plus our kiddos' allergies are bothering them and needed something to assist. So we went. VERY friendly staff. Not referring to the cashiers though... (not that they were unpleasant in any way... just did not interact with them... in any way) But the guy on the sales floor... wow. Amazing. We were looking for some allergy medicine (homeopathic or hebal) and needed some help, he was right there...asked us if we needed anything before I had a chance to ask him! He was SO HELPFUL.. and that is truly putting it mildly. I will not divulge every detail but please understand... he was so amazing. I truly appreciate his patience, his knowledge, his willingness to help, his apparent love for children, and his kindness that seemingly comes natural. Thank you! The store itself.. not really bad at all. We shop, religiously, at Natural Grocers, Sprouts, Wheatsville and Peoples Pharmacy... and I know my prices EVERYWHERE! :) Some things were a little more expensive, but then others.... MUCH CHEAPER than other places. I scoured the entire store last night... was so excited about the HUGE selection of RAW ORGANIC HONEY.. and the price. Wow. Thanks for that too! This is my favorite place to shop for groceries when I want to avoid waiting in long check out lines and want a stress free shopping experience. It's always a breeze to check out without waiting, which I thought was next to impossible in Austin. They have a nice selection of freshly packed snack and nut mixes that I am always tempted to peruse, as well as freshly baked goods and sandwiches to grab for a quick lunch. All of the employees I've encountered have been very friendly and offer to help me find items. I find that every time I'm in the bath/body aisle, there is always someone stocking shelves who offers helpful product suggestions. They also stock a ton of products from local businesses, which is an added bonus. Love this place! read more

I stopped writing Yelp reviews for the longest time but I'm in. This place is like a WF alternative for me. Great people, decent mix of organic and regular products and small. I don't have to stress out when I go there and I never have too many people in line. If the an emplyee see's a line they open the second register. And they have ceviche which I know how to make but it's so cool to just drop by and pick some up. They actually made one to order for me using just shrimp and scallops the way I like it. It's a grocery store. They're kind of all the same. But this one is more expensive (than whole foods, for real?) $5.09 for 8 oz of vegan cheese. IT'S NOT EVEN REAL CHEESE. The employees are quite nice and chatty, although a coupon really throws them for a loop. This store is like Sun Harvest, even with the same smell, but maybe just not as cool. I passed by the meat area and the meat looked gray. I'm not positive, but I feel like gray-ish meat is a "no-no." There is a gigantic cow statue in the parking lot. It has the largest udder I've ever seen, and that's not saying a lot, because I haven't seen all that many, but it's weird, and it makes me uncomfortable. When I go to Fresh Plus, I just kind of walk around in a daze, thinking I should have gone elsewhere. It's just, hmm, unimpressive? Average? Meh? (insert shoulder shrug here) Eh, whatevs. read more

Very bad grocery store, not much better than the gas station down the street. All their meat is consistently brown, produce is not consistently fresh and often getting close to spoiled, and they are prone to not having common grocery items in stock. Some things I can specifically remember on different occasions them shrugging and say "oh well, we must be out" are: shrimp (fresh or frozen), elbow macaroni, hamburger buns, green onions, tortillas, regular sliced cheese and fresh mozzarella. We bought some sausage once and actually took it back because it was so disgusting when we opened it up. The lady quickly apologized and refunded the $7 or so that it cost. Their precook meat is a complete joke, basically they wait until their meat is about to go bad and cook it so they can still sell it for something. If they would just run some specials every now and then on a good cut of steak and seafood maybe they could turn some of their food. I question the legitimacy of any positive review on this board, I've been there well over 20 times and each time I am disappointed. All that said, I still give them a chance because it's just SO convenient compared to crossing Mopac to get to HEB. Also, there is always someone ready to check me out when we're done shopping. The staff is nice and the place is clean for the most part. I had high hopes for this place, if it was half as good as Central Market or Whole Foods I'd go there all the time but unfortunately its below Walmart quality when it comes to the product they sell. read more

Good for quick stop for things you may have missed at HEB or wherever you would normally shop. Small, local feel. They don't have "normal" medicine like Advil (only an aisle full of various supplements and probable homeopathic nonsense), but it is a good place to grab some vegetables and various food items if you are in a rush. They don't have a variety of seaweed but they do have miso. It's just kind of a good spot for some things but not everything, if you get my drift. Not a Whole Foods or a Central Market but great to have nearby. read more
