Based on the look and the location, I expected this to be a really bougie and boutique grocery store with high prices and limited items. That's true. It's cute and they have some pastries, cookies, and snacks as well as sandwiches you can order and snacks/drinks but this isn't going to be a legit grocery store for anyone. Royal Blue Grocery is one of my favorite places to stop when we're on a bike ride along the lake. Their grilled sandwiches are some of the best in town! I like the Texas Hold-Em - Roast beef, cheese, peppers and onions on hearty toasty bread. Everything a sandwich should be! It's a little expensive, but a good treat. As far as treats, they usually have a good selection of freshly baked cookies and pastries - or even better, the "day old" baked goods you can get at a discount. The reason I'm giving it four stars, is that they don't have public bathrooms "for public sanitary reasons." If I "lose it" on a bike ride, I don't think that contributes to public sanitation, do you? I'd understand not allowing non-paying customers to use the toilet, but at least let us paying customers have somewhere to go, so we can enjoy a long day out and about! read more

During a recent stay at the Hotel Van Zandt, I visited the Royal Blue Grocery Store frequently for little snacks or drinks as I needed them! The small store was quaint and had a great selection of items (even meals/ sides/ desserts) but was a bit on the pricier side... even for Austin. While some items were expensive but doable, others items were outrageously priced (like the Halo Top ice cream which was $10+ for a pint). The items I did end up purchasing/ trying were: - Coffee Americano w/ sugar-free hazelnut syrup - Variety of Candy (M&Ms, hot tamales, etc) - Bottle of Champagne/ Brut - Olive Oil Cookie - Shortbread Square - Drinks/ Waters The cookie was good and soft, but not my favorite. The shortbread square however was super dense and rich... and left me wanting more of it... very tasty! Overall, this is a good little grocery store if you're at the hotel or downtown and don't have a car/ don't want to uber. Also a cute place for a quick coffee/ cookie. read more

Awesome little Austin grocery chain. Love the ready made cold case items and the breakfast tacos. Good variety of healthy products and drinks, and good for some lightweight grocery shopping too. On the pricier side but it's a local chain, not a big box store so, it makes sense. Always cheery staff. read more

Royal Blue Is amazing for so many reasons! First of all the convenience is a life saver, plus they have multiple locations all over downtown Austin. Many of the products they carry are from local purveyors, plus they have some mainstream items as well. Finally the coffee, and breakfast tacos are the BEST! read more

I have to say when I went into this shop I was blown away so cute and adorable. Obviously very well curated. I called a friend of mine to even show her on FaceTime how adorable this little grocery store is. It was great up until after check out when I went over to get the café mocha that I ordered. The barista was absolutely so rude and sniffling under his mask the entire time. When I walked over to the barista I gave him a friendly hello and let him know that I do not want foam which he responded with a snarky response. Then as he was pouring the milk into The steaming stainless steel cup the lid of the milk container lid dropped in it and he proceeded to fish it out with his bare hand that had not been washed then he proceeded to try to continue in which at that time I asked him politely to please get a different container and or clean that one. This took place about 4:30pm 08/08/2021just incase there is a camera that has view of the barista station. I don't know anyone that ok No offense but we are in the times of Covid and sanitation is important. Really important anytime. Once again was very rude and rolled eyes at me acting like it it was a Forbidden effort on his behalf. The store is so adorable I would hate to think that I would never go back but If this kind of behavior is allowed im not sure i will ever go back. With appropriate reply from manger or owner i am open to giving this store another try. read more

As a resident on Rainey Street, I get rather spoiled with the never-ending plethora of bars and killer food truck food. However, I doesn't get any more metropolitan than throwing a cardigan on over your pjs and riding the elevator down and trotting over a block to grab some of the coziest pecan coffee you've ever had in your life. Yes, it's pricey. It's a convenience store. They have those miscellaneous items provided for your convenience. It's not like I'm going to compile a grocery list and then head to Royal Blue for my weekly groceries. No, I'm going there to grab a nice bottle of wine to throw back after a terrible day a work. I'm going there for the third time in one week to sink my teeth into the most indulgent vegetable grilled cheese I've had the privilege to introduce to my mouth. I'm going there to buy a box of quinoa because I thought I had some left in my pantry and to my dismay I didn't, and instead of driving to the grocery store, I can walk over to Royal Blue because they'll save the day. Check it out. The staff has been on the higher than average level of friendly and helpful. You can dine there. Read a book and sip on a frosty beer. Living on Rainey can be kinda difficult because there is no place near by to grab the quick things like foil or almond milk "real quick like". HA false. I found Royal Blue and they are really making my life a lot easier lately. I come by at least several times a week as a byproduct of living on Rainey and I can't say I've never had a negative experience. Staff is friendly, kind and helpful. Prices can be hit or miss but as someone who lived in NYC, this is truly like a self proclaimed austin "bodega", so prices are good with some items and overpriced with others but that's something I accept bc I'm too tired and lazy to drive to the local HEB. Lots of unique and varied products, also fresh food in a pinch. I have memories of having a late night Ruben back in the day and the quality is still great! read more

This is a nice spot to grab a snack or relax for a little bit. I work near the area, so it's my go-to spot to grab a snack, coffee, etc. They have a wide variety of wine, beers, snacks, etc. Staff are always relaxed and welcoming. I've never had a bad experience. read more

While the RBG has pretty much cornered the market on bodega-like groceries in ATX, you know it ain't never gonna be a Whole Foods or good HEB. (Well it's unlikely anyhow. Would be kinda awesome for the people living in a building with one if they had a multi-floor kinda thing, though). Prices and selection notwithstanding, me and my compatriots were impressed with the selection they did have, including some places to sit both indoors and out, kickin' a/c, and surprisingly decent restrooms. However, the thing that impressed me the most was that not only did they have some reasonably decent produce (though not organic) - the guy behind the counter not only asked me if I wanted a bag for my single apple, but then he offered to wash it for me. Nice place with nice workers. Good selection. But some of their pricing is absolutely instane. They tried to charge me 13.99 for one pound of frozen organic ground beef. I was willing to pay an overhead for the convenience but that meat cost max $8 elsewhere. I could get it delivered cheaper. Which make little sense compared to their beyond meat which seemed to be near grocery store prices. read more

We popped in to this little nugget of a store because our airbnb was around the corner and we needed to stock up on snacks. I loved that, for its size, it hard a variety of options to select from and had a great range of local products and national favorites. They were even kind enough to take back a bag of popcorn that we purchased that said "kettlecorn" but failed to have a HUGE dummy-proof label warning us that it was also SUPER hot. Their freshly packed to-do salads and items were delicoius and stayed fresh for the few days we were in town. The staff there was really kind - but I didnt particularly care for the "tip amount" that rang up every transaction.. I did feel obligated to give them a little extra - they certainly earned it though. Overall, decent place for when you're in a pinch and need a few things. For bulk shopping, you'll probably want to select somewhere a bit less pricey though. read more

Over priced. No wait, that's not good enough. Let me try again. Super duper mega over priced. Ah there we go. I get it. Here you are paying for the convenience. But it's a steep, steep price to pay: most items are double what they would be in a normal grocery store. When a Clif bar costs 2 bucks, it really doesn't taste good, because it tastes like regret. Suddenly staying hungry doesn't seem so bad. Oh and they double charged me on some item but I was too tired to notice. So they are incompetent too. Most things don't have price tags on them, and you dont see prices as they are rung up, so when you get the total, you know you got screwed, but you cant tell how it happened. Moral of the story: if you are desperate for food, this place will work. But you will feel like a chump. And double check the receipt! read more

This is my favorite Royal Blue in Austin. Julia is the best and the entire staff is always on it. Their manager Sophia is great too. I moved from Rainey Street and now the East Side Royal Blue is closest. It's just not the same vibe. I've decided that when I need my cold brew or vegetarian grilled cheese fix, that I'll be driving the extra few minutes back to Rainey. They're the best and I miss the positivity. This place is convenient enough but the prices are just exorbitant. I don't like a place that I feel guilty buying anything from there knowing that I'm likely paying double what I need to. 6 pack of beer: $11 bucks, small container of tuna salad: $5.50. Royal Blue is new to this neighborhood and is a great addition. They offer locally made treats, snacks, and meals daily. It is the only grocery store on Rainey St. I love that I can just walk across the street and find food that is quick and good for me.
