I was invited here recently, a first for me to any Friedrichs location and thoroughly was impressed!! What a fun interior, it almost gave off steam punk vibes but more modern, and the menu was so vast! It was lovely having such a large display of teas, as my coffee date wasn't too thrilled to drink coffee and excited about being included. We were in town for work and I'm not going to lie, we came here twice in the same day because we loved it so much. The location is so clean and welcoming. There's tons of seating inside and a little patio outside, perfect for getting some work done. The service was great both times, drink orders were taken and made quickly. Our group tried a couple different things and everyone was impressed, I thought their coffee was fantastic and there were so many great options. I was happy to find a smaller coffee house with high quality coffee and specialty teas during my visit to Ankeny+Urbandale, IA. The team of baristas stayed masked up, used plastic barriers at points of contact and kept the place nice and clean! The great: nice outdoor patio. It was quiet and shaded and lots of space. The staff is really friendly, quick, and helpful. The place had a small town, comfortable feel. The not so great: the coffee. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but none of us thought it was that good. My flavored latte was so sweet that I asked them to pour out half and just refill with the dark roast drip coffee. I've been here a couple of times before, but it's not my #1 option. The employees are not the nicest. They look annoyed when I'm trying to figure out my order, they don't speak loud enough (I've had to say "I'm sorry?" Or "what was that?" multiple times), and they reminded us (not in a friendly way) to not move the furniture and to keep our masks on the even while we are enjoying our drinks. Nitro coffee. YES! I have a stomach that is rebelling against me for the many years of drowning it with Starbucks coffee. I have been looking for a coffee option that doesn't want to make my stomach want to digest itself 4 minutes after drinking coffee. The nitro coffee did it. It is basically coffee out of a tap with nitrogen gas infused into it. Its creamier than regular iced coffee and it drinks a lot better. So far this is the only place I've seen this in Des Moines. I've had it bottled but you don't get the same effect and it doesn't give you the head in your glass, like you get with beer from the tap. Aside from the nitro, this cafe is top notch. The staff is great. The cafe is always clean. The selection of whole bean coffee makes Christmas shopping for my dad super easy and the overall atmosphere is not stuffy, like you might expect for a nice down to earth coffee shop. read more

I always prefer a shop that is roasting their own coffee in-house. But, I was surprised by the the state of the roaster. Every hole in the cooling bin looked plugged up and the machine clearly needed a cleaning. Not a good sign and I wondered if the espresso machine might be equally in need of service and cleaning. Thus, I didn't order coffee and tried a smoothie. Certainly nothing special and the service was matter-of-fact. Atmosphere is ok, and there is some outside seating. The pumpkin bread was pretty good, though next time I pass through Des Moines, I'll look around and hope for better. I have my own coffee roasting company and am pretty particular about my coffee house experience when traveling. horrible time at friedrichs today. I have been going here for years on a regular basis. manager decided to be overly rude to my friend who went to get me coffee. she was not aware of the total so informed my friend to just give her the money. not knowing the total he gave her $5. she then came back and said that wasn't enough. friend gave the remainder of the amount to manager at that time. drink came out wrong. lack of espresso. I went back in to address managers attitude and the mistake. manager instead of apologizing gave every excuse in the book. called owner to discuss managers attitude due to manager informing her staff she would not remake my drink or try to fix anything. instead she said I was rude and decided to start another bickering fight with me over the counter instead of addressing the issue. sad part is....I go here on a regular basis. the way the manager and owner acted was not complimentary for a small town business. I love going to all my local business, but will not be going to this one until I know something has changed. I have been a manager at cafes and coffee shops all over. it would have been nice if she would have just apologized and given me my coffee. work harder to keep your locals wanting to come back. read more
