It's thankfully not all about coffee, as I am not a coffee drinker. Open throughout the day, Smokey Row is a terrific place to grab your favorite morning beverages and continue to explore them throughout the day in their great interior. It has such a good vibe, is well laid out, and has plenty of space to mingle, catch up on work, spend time with a friend, or grab a meal. Fast WiFi and an interior that oozes comfort. They have plenty of single space and community tables. Cool artwork throughout. There is plenty of parking, and they have a drive-thru open early AM for the day. A couple of people within our party enjoyed their pastries and loved their coffee! Special thanks to staff member Isis for her kind customer service and friendly overall disposition. I've had Smokey Row twice in my life. Once was almost five years ago and I've been wanting to come again ever since. The reason is they have the best chai I've had in my life. I had the spiced chai this past visit and I can't remember if it was vanilla or spiced the first time. Either way I've had many a chais since that first one and Smokey Row's is my favorite. Smokey Row is my favorite coffee shop in town and also a great place for ice cream! My go-to orders are iced carmel latte or vanilla chai tea. They also have a rotating seasonal menu which is fun to try. I love their assorted pastries, especially the s'mores muffin. As for ice cream, you can't go wrong with the classic Smokey Row shake or any other treat. Their staff is kind and efficient, usually there's quite a few working at any time. As for seating, there's a large patio, booths, tables, couches, and a bar, however they can still all fill up. I enjoy meeting up with people here, playing card games, or getting work done on my laptop. Overall, a great spot that has something for everyone! read more

I've been here twice in the last week. Both times I ordered Latte's. Both times the drinks were served barely room temp and no where near hot. And I am not a person that requires ultra hot drinks at all. The milk had clearly not been heated / frothed at all. I love it love it love it!!! Such a great coffee spot in Ankeny. Right where all the new Prairie Trail District is. During COVID19 review: Masks required walking in. All employees are masked. Other patrons walking in were masked. Visited on a Saturday morning 7:00am and my friend and I were the only ones sitting in and enjoying our espressos for over an hour. Free WiFi is provided. Ordered from the holiday menu. Peppermint mocha, oat milk, no whip. Made to perfection. Loved the flavor and smoothness. Syrups are non dairy. Great plant milk options as well. I mentioned a dairy allergy and our barista made sure to take extra care. Service was exceptional! Our barista came over with our hot drinks. I thought we had to wait to be called or have a call number. My friend and I fully enjoyed the nook area. I could see it as a highly coveted spot. No vegan or plant based treats or food offered here. Overall I loved this new coffee spot. The ambiance, the quality coffee, the extra care from the barista. I will be returning and look forward to another coffee break soon! read more

This Smokey Row café, Ankeny's offshoot of the iconic Downtown Des Moines fixture, is clearly a local hub. In the afternoon, business meetings and students (high school and college) dot the interior with laptops and lattes. This neighborhood pillar features a bit of everything-- Your typical café/barista fare (coffee, tea, smoothies, pastries), some meal-type food options you can order, and a whole ice cream bar where handscooping traditional brown tub packed ice cream is the standard in a variety of flavors. The layout is eclectic and varied. The back nook near the restrooms conjures up diner feels, while the window alcove near it feels like having drinks at a ski lounge. The main floor is covered in a variety of table and chair configurations for a variety of people. The food and beverages are different from some of the expected tastes. I tried a spiced chai and honestly it tasted very bitter compared to the same drink at Café Diem, a more established fixture relatively close to this locale. The ice cream was great! My spouse found the cappuccino delicious. Pastries were yummy. One time we tried a bread bowl of the chili, the chili was lovely on the cold day, the bread bowls are unappetizing and clearly mass produced. During the main hours, it seems busy. My spouse and I prefer the less busy hours when the atmosphere is more relaxed instead of the hustle and bustle. Overall this is a pretty nice place. Much more space than the Smokey Row downtown. A great local coffeehouse added to the bustling Prairie Trail businessland! I'm so glad they are here and they are very welcome to the neighborhood! This location sits right off SW State Street near the Jethro's. There is an easily accessible drive up with plenty of room. The drive up menu included their whole menu of coffee, ice cream, soups, salads, sandwiches, paninis and so much more. I introduced my husband to this place and he was pretty happy with his selections of the Denver Sandwich and a double mocha. I had the Turkey croissant with the amazing vanilla chai! Their chai is one of the best and I'm so excited to be able to get it regularly now! I can tell you the staff we encountered were very friendly. I have come to this location multiple times and I try to order an iced "hot fudge mocha" and 75% of the time, I get a regular mocha. There's a distinctive taste difference - I don't particularly like the regular mocha...it's bitter and a bit chalky tasting while hot fudge one is rich and smooth. It's disappointing taking that first sip after getting down the road, and realizing it's wrong. Also, they require a tip when paying with a card!! Sorry! But I don't trust you at this point to give you a tip, not until I actually start getting what I order. read more

Drive-Thru: LOVE the option of drive-thru for places that aren't burgers and fries. The noon hour line went fairly quick for not exactly being "fast food." Menu had lots of food/drink images which I always love visuals so that was helpful and appreciated. Food/drink: The smoked turkey croissant was pretty thick and flavorful! Lots of mayo (miracle whip isn't usually my first pick of mayo but still tasty) and lots of meat. Super awesome, flakey croissant and fresh lettuce. Chips were included with the sandwich. Iced vanilla latte was fine, seemed stronger than normal, but overall good! Price: Croissant sandwich and medium iced coffee were about $12 total which seemed a bit steep to me (hence the four star review) but maybe I'm out of touch with coffee shop prices? read more

I love Smokey Row, but I feel like, at this location, the quality of the coffee can be hit or miss. Taste burnt sometimes. Typically, I will get something frozen, like a smoothie or shake, or some food when I come to the Ankeny location anymore. read more

My favorite coffee/quick breakfast spot in Ankeny! Their drive thru moves very quickly, which is great on busy mornings when I am headed to work. All of the employees are always very helpful and provide great service. Love their coffee, especially the wide range of sugar free coffee flavorings and that they can do iced decaf coffee lattes. I stop here many mornings for an iced SF caramel decaf latte and it is amazing! They don't have a huge menu, but all the food I have tried is very good and has a little bit of everything that you can easily eat in the car. I love the Rise and Shine breakfast sandwich. I love that they have some healthier breakfast options available. My son loves that they have Green River. That's a tough soda to find in restaurants. Definitely recommend read more

Good Croissant sandwich with chips and a panini with chips/salsa. Like the chips/salsa change. Chips like/were lays. Good Website menu pictures show comes with one side and chips, and a toy pictured. Kids Mac and cheese - bit dry and reminded of the microwave cups. No chips, toy box looked used and not take. Picked applesauce over fruit snacks or goldfish. Gooey Grilled Cheese - No chips. Came with one side. Toasted bread with melted cheese and not 'grilled' or panini pressed like shown in online menu, which is disappointing for a place that could pan or griddle the bread, wasn't busy with employees grouped together behind counter part of the time. Bread was dry and not much ate. Both kids meals were served with the large metal soup spoons. Have good coffee when had in past. Nice, well laid out space. I love Smokey Row Ankeny! The drive-thru normally has lots of cars, but the staff move the line along super fast, and the service inside is just as good! The atmosphere inside is nice and inviting: I love the music playlists, and the employees are always friendly. I'm a sucker for the iced turtle mochas and warm chocolate muffins (which hit the spot every time). I plan to study here a lot this fall and so I can order more coffee! read more

He then proceeded to grab my cup and others by putting his fingers inside the cup. Apparently this is common protocol as every person working picked up their cups by putting fingers in cup. Service is not the best. All the open tables were dirty when we walked in and our table has had dirty dishes on it for the last hour I have been here. We asked if they could grab the dishes off of the table and they walked to an empty table to take dishes off. How about take the dishes off of the table that people are sitting at? During COVID, THIS IS AN ISSUE! I do not want to sit at a dirty table to do my homework! The employees have not wiped off one table since I walked through the door. We had to grab someone else's dirty dishes because the employees obviously refused to do it. I asked for my food to be brought to my table but instead it sat on the counter till one of us had to go get it. I am not impressed by this place and recommend taking COVID seriously and wiping off tables and bringing the dishes off the table when someone sits down. I will not be coming back. read more
