We love to stay in tiny Fries to bicycle on the New River Trail, but places to dine are scarce. Lucky for us this restaurant opened a year or so ago, and today was our chance to enjoy a meal there. The second story offers seating with views of the New River and dam. Classy, simple decor and excellent, friendly service, and the Mexican-style food was wonderful. We had Shrimp Fajitas and Quesabirra. I hadn't had Quesabirra before and am a fan after this interesting dish. Added perk was 'real' silverware instead of the junky lightweight stuff. I decided to check out this establishment tonight and I'm glad I did. I was greeted warmly with an offer to seat me upstairs for the better view. The well attired waitstaff were both efficient and attentive. The food was delicious. I enjoyed the chicken fajita burrito, a new twist for me. The food was not perfect but still edible although I would think a steak costing $27 should not be rubbery. Nonetheless, it wasn't so bad that it couldn't be eaten. We didnt even say anything to our server. Also, the grilled chicken on my salad was hard to cut but was still tasty. I went to eat here a while back. Nice place, clean, good service. However, the ribeye I ordered was just so so. Ok meat, no charring, no spices, just a grey piece of meat. The meal was alright, but I can do better for cheaper here at home. read more

Our server was on it with drink refills and getting our courses to the table well timed. We started with a half loaf of bread, which was good. The half garden salads were excellent and a decent size. I appreciated being able to order just oil and vinegar. The hubs had bbq flank steak sandwich, which he really loved. I had the lemon encrusted trout. Perfectly crusted, moist and piping hot. 6/12/25 reservations for party of 8. All steak orders were unacceptable, too thin to properly cook as ordered. They were out of trout, ordered Shrimp and grits which was dry, not hot, not edible. Requested a soup and bread, out of bread. Ordered a taco salad, which was barely acceptable. Lovely restaurant, service was good for the crowd, but very overpriced for what is served. Holy cow what a great meal! We visit Fries, Va twice a year to enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking and this time we tried the Fries Dam Steakhouse. I ordered the trout dinner and my wife ordered the apple cider grilled chicken. It was Saturday night and the hostess warned us about the likely long wait, so we weren't expecting super fast service. Almost an hour to the minute of placing our order, the food arrived. All I can say is that it was fresh, hot and incredibly delicious! Also, our waitress was very attentive and made sure our drinks (water) were always topped off. We're not ones easily impressed by food but we know it when we get it... and when we don't. Last year we ate at a neighboring restaurant and it was simply awful. I can happily report that Fries now has a high quality, fairly priced restaurant that has amazing food!! let me say this is a small community and there limited places to eat. This place might fit the small area but our meal was not worth the price. Small ribeye means a thin piece of beef. large ribeye is a larger this piece. Think of it like a Steakum. Not only me saying this but have heard others describing it the same way. We both looked up at the waitress when our food was placed before us. Are you really serving this to us? I ordered medium rare but there is no way to cook to this temperature because it is so thin. Mixed vegetables were a frozen bag dumped into hot water and left to soak. Looked like the picture on the Walmart bag of mixed vegetables. The mashed potatoes and salad were fine. For the price you are paying you would expect glass glasses....not plastic like you get at Pizza Hut. For the people in that area it might be nice for a night out instead of diving into Galax or Wytheville....but do not make a special trip to this Restaurant. No thanks, I grew up in Fries and there's no telling what kind of mess you'll find in your food eating here on a regular basis. Terrible view of the river, only thing that's visible is the old fire department, and the YMCA. The best part of the experience was hearing Zack Vaughan sing gospel songs. This steakhouse is really bringing fries to life! Me and my family went during the big opening and the waiters handled it so well Great service! The ambiance of the steakhouse makes it feel like you're not even in fries. When we went in we got seated right after we walked in. They seated us in the upstairs there is a beautiful view upstairs that you watch while you eat. For appetizers we got the fried pickles and chicken wings. The wings were some of the best I've ever ate and the pickles were absolutely delicious! For food I got the filet mignon I got it medium well and it was perfectly cooked With perfect presentation. New restaurant to the area was super excited to try this place with my bestie! When we arrived inside it was beautiful. Very contemporary with a taste of a modern. We were asked if we wanted to sit in the top or bottom my bestie picked the top and I'm so glad she did. Not only was the dining area up top beautiful but the view of the river was gorgeous. Our waitress was amazing. She recommended some great things on the menu, including the peanut butter cheesecake which I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of. My family and I recently visited The Fries Dam Steakhouse. Everyone except me ordered hamburgers, but I ordered a steak. When I received my order several people asked what I ordered because it didn't even look like a steak. It was sliced so thin, I bet it wasn't 1/8 of an inch thick. To say this place was a disappointment is an understatement. From the moment we stepped inside it was chaotic. We (My aunt, Uncle, my Boyfriend) and I went on the Friday before Easter at 6:00pm. However, I will give credit for the design and the interior because they did do a wonderful job with that and I love that they kept some of the history in the building. Anyways, once we got inside it took several minutes before anyone greeted us. We asked for a table for 4 and were asked if we made reservations. I said "no" and was reassured that was okay and it wasn't a big deal. I then asked could we eat upstairs and she said that it was full. Again, not a big deal. A lady then comes from the back downstairs, grabs the menus from the host and begins walking up the steps without saying a word to us. My uncles asks, "are we supposed to go with her?" and we were told yes. So confused, we went up stairs and was taken to a table with a place setting for 5 people. We told her we only needed 4 menus and she looked very confused but took the extra menu and removed an extra chair from the table as well. Our server then came over and we went to place our drink order and asked what was on draft. We were then informed that they still did not serve alcohol and were having issues obtaining the liquor license. So, we ordered 3 sweet teas (my uncle, aunt and myself, and 1 half and half tea (my boyfriend). Those were brought out about 10 minutes later and were mixed up, but we said nothing. We then ordered onion rings as an appetizer, they came out in a timely manner and they were good. We ordered our entree once the onions rings were brought out and it took an hour for us to get our food after that! I ordered the mushroom & swiss burger with fries, the burger was okay and the fries were soggy and not cooked long enough. My boyfriend got the chicken tenders and fries which once again, fries were not cooked good. My uncle got the apple cider glazed chicken, mixed veggies and asked for rice in place of his potatoes in which he received potatoes. He might have had 1/4 cup of veggies and maybe 4 bites of the chicken. My aunts plate was the one I couldn't get over though. She ordered the ribeye, side salad with thousand island dressing and potatoes. The dressing was never brought out to her and the ribeye was the thinnest steak I have ever seen in my life. It looked like it came from the frozen section in the dollar tree. We had to ask for refills several times because we would empty our cups during our long waiting period. My anut and uncle order fried green tomatoes to go once our food came to the table and we waited another 30-45 minutes on those and when they got them home they were not cooked all the way either and had to throw them away because they did not taste well. Our waitress would also say "unhhhhhh?" when we asked something that she could not hear instead of saying something more professional or manner able. Overall, this place needs to pick it up or it will not last with this service and wait time and we will not be back. It was a huge waste of time and money. read more

Don't waste your time or money! Worst restaurant I've ever been to. For starters, we had called in reservations prior to us coming to the restaurant. We were told we would have a table at that particular time, didn't happen. When we arrived it took us 30 minutes to speak to a host about being seated. She informed me that someone must have not written our names in. Then told we would have to wait an additional 15-20 minutes. When we are being sat at our table we were told that it would be a while to order but they could seat us. We decided that was fine since there is no where to wait up front. Upon being sat it took 10 minutes to order drinks. I'm going to skip ahead a little because everything was underwhelming. I ordered shrimp and grits (which sounded good) while my wife ordered the pinwheel steaks. Then, 5 minutes later our server came back to inform me they were out of shrimp, so I ordered a burger. When our food comes, my wife cuts into the pinwheel steak only to see the meat inside was still BLUE (not red, not pink). This grossed my wife out and she lost her desire to eat any steak from this point. We asked if we could get some chicken tenders instead since it's not beef! 10 minutes later our serve brings us our chicken tenders and to quote the waitress "I'm embarrassed to bring this to the table but, this is what the chef gave me". We were given 2 tiny chicken tenders to replace the steak. 2...... just 2!!!!!!!! Unbelievable to say the least. We asked for a manager to find out how this was to replace a meal. When she came to the table it got worse. For starters we were told her name was "Tiva"?but she never introduced herself, she was rude when she got to the table. She tried to explain to me how to cook a steak and that at times they are still "pink" on the inside no matter how long you cook it. Then I questioned about the 2 pieces chicken once again and she asked if we sent the steak back to be reheated..... and told that it would make it warmer, again explaining how to reheat a steak. When I explained it was BLUE and my wife no longer was Interested in steak due to the undercooked one prior. She said she cannot discount a steak more than 20% even if we didn't eat it. Then said I could talk to the chef so he could explain once again HOW TO REHEAT A STEAK! I said I was done talking and just to give me the bill so we could leave. When getting my bill I paid $17.99 for something that we didn't touch outside of cutting it open. At this point I was done, I gave her the money to pay our bill and she took it. My change should have been $10.38. She walked up to the table (without saying a word) DROPPED a $10 bill on the table and walked off. My wife went to ask why we didn't recieve all of our change and once again was very rude. I have never been treated this way in any restaurant I've been to (which is Internationally as I'm a veteran). This place I still feel as though they owe me $17.99 plus tax for something that was inedible and an apology by the way the "Manager" conducted themselves, and I use that term loosely! Our first dining experience at Fries Dam Steakhouse and we had a fine dining expectation but sorely dissatisfied. We made reservations and upon entering the restaurant the hostess asked us, did you make reservations?, we said yes and she said follow me. Up the stairs we went, it's quite a climb, and she directed us to join a couple there. We looked at her and said we have a reservation and she said you're not joining this couple? We said no we have our own reservation. She never asked our name, she then asked a waitress to clean a table for us. It took a moderate amount of time to get settled and the waitress to take our order but we got settled in with clean table but wet and order placed. It didn't take long for the slakes to arrive. The salads are skippy drenched in dressing. Then our appetizers came, onions rings fairly good but the bread was awful and it is a pay for item on the menu. Sweet, doughy and falls apart not in a good way. We ordered steaks, a rib eye that was half fat and thin and a strip steak that was extra thin with fat so mostly inedible. Strip steak is at least a half inch thick not fatty. The macaroni and cheese was cold and the noodles are hard so not worth eating. It was my birthday and I was so disappointed. read more
