We had just landed in Montreal and we were STARVING. We were craving poutine, and saw that Frite Alors was nearby and still opened! We ordered to-go at around 10:15pm and the food was ready for pick up 25 min later. My favorites were La Porc Effiloché and La Montréalaise. The maple bbq sauce in La Porc Effiloché was chef's kiss! I'm not a fan of cheese blocks, so their classic La Frite Alors was my #3, but still very good. The poutines could've used more sauce across the board, but considering how late and hungry we were, they were still DELICIOUS! read more

This was a pretty disappointing location. The fries were badly made. Some were hard, some weren't properly salted, some were just tasteless. I was with some friends and they both thought the fries weren't very good and I have to agree even though I love their fries usually. It's such a bummer because this was their first time coming here and they got a bad batch of fries. The location is nice but the kitchen makes the whole place unbearably hot. I wouldn't eat here. I was encouraged by the many good reviews of this resto to give it a try on my recent trip, but i should have gone elsewhere. The portions were small or overpriced, depending how you look at it. The food didn't taste good to myself and 2 other party members. We waited almost an hour for a side salad. One of my party members ordered a burger and it came with toppings she doesn't eat. I would definitely consider myself a poutine enthusiast. Whenever I am up in Quebec, regardless of the restaurant, I will always upgrade my fries to a poutine without thinking twice. A friend of mine always raved about Frites Alors, and I was on the way to the bus station up the road so I thought: why not? stop in and grab a bite. After looking at the menu I settled on this one that had "Bush" in the name. It had ground beef, onions, and mushrooms in it. I really don't enjoy mushrooms so I asked the server if I could order that poutine but to hold the mushrooms. He said unfortunately he can't. It was 4:15pm on a Sunday afternoon, I was one of 4 people in there, if it was busy and he said he couldn't I would've accepted it. I double checked with him one more time after he gave me a water if I could order that poutine and he still said no. Keep in mind, I'm sitting at the bar and can see where they make the food, all the toppings are divided up into different containers so it wouldn't have been impossible, and I would've been more than happy to pay the original price for it. I ended up just grabbing a traditional poutine, to-go instead of eating it in there. All in all, the poutine was pretty damn good, and I had a regular sized one which was very filling. If you are a foodie in Montreal, you'll definitely be eating poutine. Allow me to make the case that you should have it at Frite Alors: - The fries are crispy and delicious even with the cheese and gravy! This alone makes a huge difference and was the single biggest factor in my decision to list this as a "best ever." Other places that are otherwise decent (including Belle Provence and even the famous Au Pied de Cochon) don't get this right, leading to a soggy experience. - They get the ratio right! Enough cheese curds leads to a rich enough, delicious experience all the way through. - They serve them in a bowl! Serving poutine on a plate is an unfortunately common mistake, allowing heat to escape without really preventing sogginess. They offer a few "varieties" of poutine now, and we tried several. This is right down the street from us and a decent option for a quick bite. The food is more expensive than I think it should be for the quality. The fries with mayo are pretty good (like the curry one), poutine is ok (not my favourite fries for poutine), and club sandwich was pretty plain and not worth the price. They have a nice patio in the summer - a good option for a drink and some fries once in a while! read more

This is a nice, big space, and table service is our preferred mode of ordering in a non-English language, as I get stressed out trying to speak French with other people behind me, potentially impatient, while I try to string together words. So, it's a good mix of fast food and regular resto. We had a poutine, a grilled cheese with apple and honey, and a side of fries with mielnaisse (honey mayo) between three of us. The grilled cheese was a little too much bread for the other ingredients, but the fries were perfect -- fairly thin, good and greasy without being gross, hot and fresh. The bathrooms in the back are Asian-themed with different Asian characters on each door. This was a little stressful - going from French/English to Asian. Still not sure if they are actually men's/women's or unisex, but I'm going to assume the latter. Clearly not worth docking them stars, but it was funny watching a little girl (maybe seven) walk to the bathrooms and then yell for her dad in a worried voice to come and help her choose which bathroom she was supposed to use. Getting our check was slow, but this may just be a Montreal on the weekend thing, because the same was true at every restaurant we tried. I would like to give 2.5 stars but I will give them the benefit of the doubt. The food was good, my poutine was excellent, my friend had no complaints about his grilled cheese. But the portions are very small and the prices are very high. A small poutine and a bottle of St. Ambroise came to $12 PLUS tax and tip! That, in my mind, is outrageous. I don't know, maybe I got a bad batch but when I ordered poutine for delivery, the cheese curds were super weird, like it felt like I was trying to chew erasers. When the "other" poutine restaurant that we had orginally booked for called at the last minute to say that had to close for an emergency, Michel and his wonderful crew accommodated all 25 of my students and me with just an hour's notice. Although the food was slow because of an unexpected lunch rush (methinks the potential customers from the "other" poutine resto came here instead, like us!), the staff were clearly working their butts off. My elk burger and salad was perfect, and my students all loved their poutine experience. Not everyone wanted to eat poutine, and this place was great for its diverse menu of more-than-just-poutine. Now let's first make it clear that i like Frites Alors as a chain. Anyone who DOESN'T like their fries just doesn't like fries period as far as i'm concerned. Or is only used to the Mcdonald's kind (which i DO like but can barely count as typical fries). So i DON'T have an issue with Frites Alors as a whole... But boy do i have a problem with this specific location! First of all, other reviews have said it, poorly ventilated (no AC, just ceiling AND floor fans...cheap owners i guess). I've been there maybe 4 times in the last 5 or 6 years and its always way too hot and your water is served at room temperature (really they can't keep it in a fridge?). Ok well minor quibble. True. Except... The last time i went, about a month ago, was the straw that broke the camel's back though. My friend just had come off the train from New York. He's been here many times and wanted to go to La Banquise which we all (me him and my gf) quite like. Unfortunately, La Banquise had a huge line.... on a tuesday night at 10pm (what!?). So we headed down to this Frites Alors instead. We showed up about 20 mins to closing time, one of the "cooks" told us they were closing soon. So we just sorta hung there until after a pause of like 10 seconds we were told we could still come in (like he pondered it and suddenly decided turning us away might be rude...no shit...except just doing that was already rude). So we sit down, figure we'll just order fries to make it faster. It took well over 5 mins before we got a waiter... I mean keep in mind there's like three customers and obviously the personnel is kinda pressed for time you'd think since closing time is only a few minutes away. In the end one of the cooks had to do it because the only waitress was busy forever with one customer that was paying their bill. We get served, the water is warm as usual but whatever. Then comes time to leave, my friend had decided before we'd even went out that he was gonna pay for us all. Somehow they were not bringing our bill so he went to the counter to pay. Now he was paying with a card, he had jsut gotten off the train and hadnt procured canadian money yet, and i didnt have any cash on me either, and the option to pay tip by card was NOT offered. I don't know if its that their system cant do it, but already that is stupid. So what happens? Well tip is not getting paid because none of us had actual cash on. Too bad but their problem as far as we're concerned. So we head out. Except we don't, the door is locked because they didn't want to allow other customers in close to closing time. So the cook who was also our waiter comes to the door. And THEN stops in front of the door. And has the GALL to ask us if we left tip on the table for the waiter (basically, himself). We were being held hostage for tip! He just stands there wating for us to figure something out. Well we don't have cash and we COULDNT tip with the card! So THEN he goes, in a very rude and annoyed tone "well its alright for this time but don't let it happen again" WHAT WHAT WHAT? We couldn't believe it. At this point my friend and girlfriend proceed to tell him to fuck off (i'm a more mild mannered person...which still doesn't mean i didn't think it was utter BS). In WHAT WORLD does a waiter ASKS for his tip and then holds you hostage and ADMONISHES YOU FOR IT? In what world is that a proper way to treat a customer? Well apparently in this particular Frites ALors world it is.... What if we just hadn't thought the tip was deserved? Any way, needless to say, i am NEVER EVER EVER going to this Frites Alors location ever again and already encouraged all my friends to boycott it as the employees are obviously mannerless assholes. You have been warned. P.S: Oh yeah and, the following day, my friend called the manager to complain about this particular waiter and basically just got lip service. No offers of a free meal or anything. We wouldn't have taken it anyway since i don't want to see this guy ever again, but they were basically acting like it was no big deal and offered asbolutely nothing to right the situation. I mean, i've called customer service or even talked to managers of a wide variety of businesses a few times in my life when service was beyond subpar and i have pretty much always either been offered compensation or at least ensured this would not happen again (like assured me that the employee was either gonna get a talking to OR fired). We came here to grab a bite to eat for a late lunch. The restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived and we grabbed a seat at the bar. The waitress was extremely nice and provided us with an english menu. We split a large order of poutine. It was more than enough for us to split. There was plenty of cheese and gravy on the fries, but it didn't blow me away. I probably would try some place else before returning to this place. read more
