We stopped by Frog Island Seafood Restaurant & Market today on our way home from Nags Head. Don't let the outside fool you--they're practicing some serious culinary magic in the kitchen here. Lauren, our bartender, took great care of us from the moment we sat down. She was friendly, attentive, and happy to answer our questions while offering several excellent menu suggestions. My wife chose the crab cakes, served with two sides and hush puppies. She paired them with green beans and fried okra, and she enjoyed every bite. These weren't the typical crab cakes that rely on breadcrumbs and filler. Instead, they were packed with sweet, fresh crab meat and just enough binder to hold everything together. That's exactly how a crab cake should be. The fried okra arrived piping hot with a wonderfully crisp exterior while remaining tender and flavorful inside--that magical kind of cooking that leaves you wondering, "How did they do that?" The hush puppies were equally impressive. Had the portions not been so generous, we probably would have ordered another basket. I ordered the soft-shell crab and shrimp platter with fries and green beans, which happened to be the day's special. After tasting it, I completely understood why. The soft-shell crab was perfectly seasoned, crisp, hot, and absolutely delicious. The shrimp were cooked just as well. I'm a sucker for good cocktail sauce, and they certainly serve a good one here. The surprising part? This seafood simply didn't need it. I enjoyed every bite exactly as it came--no sauce required. One additional surprise was the seafood market attached to the restaurant. Their display cases were stocked with fresh local seafood at very reasonable prices. If you're looking to bring home fresh fish or shrimp after your meal, it's worth taking a few extra minutes to browse the market before you leave. We finished our meal with a pleasant conversation with Lauren, and it was the perfect ending to an excellent lunch. Passing by this place on our way back from Outerbank to VA. Here are what we tried- Fried frog legs - 5/5. It's super moist and tender! Better than any other frog legs I had since it is usually tougher meat. Calamari - 5/5. Light batter, fresh, and soft! Fried soft crab sandwich - 4/5. The soft crab is amazing. The bread just relatively slightly bigger than the crab so there are bites I only have bread. But the flavor is very good! Oyster & shrimp basket - 4/5. This was the daily special item when we ordered. The shrimp was big and oyster was good. Just think the oyster is smaller than expected but good flavor overall. We had fried okra on the side, it was good but wish there is a bit more salt. Cocktail sauce, ketchup is placed on each table so it was helpful and convenience. We could not find where the napkins were for the longest time, then realized it was right next to the food pick up spot The food came out in reasonable time. Great local seafood market about halfway between Norfolk and the Outer Banks. They make the best shrimp salad I've ever had. Their fried oysters and flounder were near perfect too. This place was great!!!! I've driven past it probably a hundred times, but never batted an eye. It wasn't until my most recent trip to obx that I stopped by after craving a crab cake sandwich & looking for places along the route. I placed my order less than 10 minutes before getting there & it was ready when I came in to pick it up!! The price was outstanding too. For my sandwich & corn fritters I believe it was $12. Can't beat that! & it was a very good crab cake. The corn fritters were perfectly fried, & it was all the perfect meal on the way to the beach. They have ample parking in their lot & gravel. Everyone I interacted with was nice, they have lots of indoor seating, & a couple of outdoor picnic tables which I opted to eat at. On our way home from OBX, before several us of went our separate ways, Frog Island was both convenient and serving some great seafood! The setting is very rustic, as this is a seafood shop as much as restaurant, with a bar at the back. Very casual, but also very welcoming! We ordered food at a counter, and picked it up at a window to the kitchen. Pretty lean, but effective and quick. The food was great! Each of the items we ordered, whether fried or broiled, was well done and flavorful. Portions were good size and satisfying. Seafood was very fresh. I would say some of the prices were higher than normal. However the food they serve there to eat was amazing and was cheap. I highly recommend eating here especially their perch special. They also sale fresh seafood which the pricing is a little high than normal but I guess that comes with the territory. This is kind of like relaxed hole in the wall. It's a fish market with a restaurant and bar in it. We haven't been since they opened the bar but was there this past weekend. I wasn't able to try any drinks but the bar was packed. I am assuming people enjoyed the bar. I got the crab cakes, stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon, hush puppies, and corn nuggets. Everything was good but I didn't enjoy the corn nuggets as it reminded me of cream corn. However, my husband and in laws love it so that's probably just my own preference. We will definitely return. I have been shopping with frog Island for almost a decade. The first time I complained about something - 2 pounds of the steam shrimp being completely overcooked and inedible - and called right away. I was treated like a criminal. I was told by Hannah, apparently the daughter of the owner, that she couldn't do anything, but finally agreeing to replace 1 pound of the 2 pounds I purchased. No refund option. (I live 45 minutes away) I went in, gave them another chance to do the right thing, talked to them again, and they still refused to give me a refund or replace the whole order. They said I should've taken a picture of the overcooked shrimp. Huh? In what world does that even make sense? And I asked her, the day I talked to her about this, if she wanted me to pick the shrimp out out of the garbage and bring it to her and she said no. I guess they have enough business that they don't need the locals. It's a shame. But I am not ever going to do business with them again. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? Have been stopping here for the past several years when I'm heading back north from the Outer Banks for fresh picked crab meat. I always get the lump crab and have been very satisfied with the product. However, the last three times I have gotten it I have been very disappointed. It really consist mostly of backfin meat with very little lump crab within. The product is fresh and I'm happy about that but if I paid for lump crab meat I would like to see more of it in the container. read more

Went to visit a friend in Currituck and we stopped for an early dinner. So happy that we did. Frog Island has a large selection of seafood, sandwiches, and other dishes to chose from. I wish that I had laid better attention to the menu, but I was so focused on the food that other diners were eating. I decided on the special which was grouper, shrimp, and two sides. I decided on green beans and coleslaw. The slaw was yummy and the green beans were so freaking good. The green beans were fresh not out of can and were cooked with bacon. Now, let's get back to the seafood. The plate came out with 3 nice pieces of lightly battered fish and 6 nice sized shrimp. It was clear by the flavor of the grouper and shrimp that they were fresh and not frozen. The batter was perfect, it wasn't heavy and didn't over power the flavor of the seafood. I don't even know how to begin to describe this meal. My friend had the fish tacos which came with one side. The fish tacos were huge and filled with catfish, diced tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. He chose the black bean salad for the side. The black bean salad consisted of black beans, tomatoes, and corn. Both meals were delicious and demolished by our greedy All I know is that I can't count how many times I've been to Currituck and not stopped at Frog Island, but that will be my last. This spot has just become my favorite place to dine in the OBX. What I'm saying to you Yelpers is that if you're in the area and don't stop for a bite, then you are doing yourself a disservice. I have visited this restaurant several times over the years. My last visit was during their renovation and I had to get my order to go, so I felt it was unfair to review during that time. The remolded seating and new bar section is a welcome improvement. You can now have a seat at the bar, order your food or fresh oysters and they will serve you. The front end has not changed. As you walk in you will still be greeted by the fresh seafood counter. Here you can purchase fresh seafood and menu prepared items that you can cook when you get home. As you round the back side of the counter you will order your meal and pay (make sure you check out the daily special on the chalkboard). Grab your vibrating puck and have a seat. When you puck goes off, go get you food and prepare to enjoy. The seafood is fresh (at least what I have had). The price is good, especially for the OBX and Hampton Roads areas. Tonight I ordered the special (remember the chalkboard) crab cake, shrimp and my choice of sides were green beans and corn nuggets. Fresh picked crabs made into a nice portion cake (not as good as a true Maryland crab cake, but damn good for the price). Green beans are average, I had to add some pepper but each their own. Six large shrimp lightly battered in a tempura style coating (little cold, BUT I ate them last). Corn nuggets were awesome as always (if you like corn and deep fried items .... GET THEM)! Don't be fooled by their cheap prices because their high quality food is worth so much more!! My friends and I were so impressed by Frog Island that I don't even know where to start! This is a great stop for a feast on your way to and from the beach to Elizabeth City. At first glance it seems like any other fast food style seafood restaurant but for the low prices the food is unlike any other + all their seafood is super fresh! First off, their Taco Tuesday deal made each taco just $1 (fish tacos) or $1.50 (soft shell crab tacos and shrimp tacos). That is an AMAZING DEAL! Even if it wasn't taco Tuesday the tacos are worth it. The shrimp and fish tacos were my favorite and also the best ones I've ever had. Their soft shell crab taco was also amazing but the texture and flavors in the shrimp tacos topped everything for me. The tacos are small enough to eat comfortably and are filled with fresh tomatoes, onions (very little) and lettuce along with the fish/shrimp/crab/oysters. I don't know what delicious seasoning/sauce they put in the tacos but they were the best thing I had out of the everything I ate in the outer banks. Secondly, their sides are AMAZING. The lady working recommended us to get some corn nuggets and listening to that suggestion was the best decision I could've made. The corn nuggets are fried nuggets filled with sweet cream corn and they taste spectacular. They are going on my list of favorite foods I've ever had for sure!! If you stop by this place you HAVE to order the corn nuggets they are to die for at $2.50 a cup. I also got to try my friend's sample sliders that included crabcake, fried shrimp, and shrimp salad sliders. All three were so delicious!!! However the crab cake slider is amazing and we ordered an individual crab cake sandwich after because it was so good. The fish sandwich was also very delicious according to my friend. The service here is also very friendly and I see many locals and tourists eating at this spot even on a Tuesday afternoon. Don't waste your money at some fancy seafood restaurant for a $20+ entree when you can come to Frog Island and have fresh seafood dishes for way cheaper. I could've gotten 18 tacos here for the price of one entree from a fancy seafood restaurant. Visited Frog Island Saturday, we drove from Chesapeake to check it out. Love how it has fresh seafood for purchase and other items, a bar and tables for dine in options. We decided to sit at the bar to enjoy some drinks for dinner. We ordered gator bites as an appetizer, I had the sliders for dinner and my husband had the two catch of the day which was the shrimp & fried flounder. We had corn fritters as a side and fries.. anyways the CORN fritters or I think they call them corn nuggets maybe ?! Where soooo good !! Hands down my fav for sure! The fried flounder was huge and cooked so good! Hubby loved it for sure ! My sliders were good, the crab cake slider was so good and the shrimp slider was delicious. I wasn't to crazy about the crab salad slider, I think it would be good as a side just didn't care for it as a slider. The aligator bites were good but I had better but I would probably get it again. I honestly think the food was very good and I would go again for sure !! It was about a 30 minute drive and I would do it again! Now the reason I gave three stars was one of the employees which she was young but literally having conversations on her phone while on break but on speaker! Talking about how much THC she just ate before work etc.. just loud and obnoxious for no reason and no one said any thing to her about her being loud on the floor! We stopped at Frog Island for lunch today before driving up to the Outerbanks. It is both a seafood market and sit-down restaurant. We had the Taco Tuesday Special and sandwiches. I had the Shrimp and Soft Shell Crab Tacoes. Both were topped with a zesty ranch sauce, green leaf lettuce, and pico de gallo. We also had a softshell crab sandwich. It was lightly fried, served with a side of french fries. Overall, it was a good lunch. However, nothing stood out as the best softshell crab sandwich or best seafood tacoes I ever had. read more
