This is one of my favorite local places for fresh well cooked seafood. It's a seafood market also so sometimes there is a slight raw seafood smell but it doesnt stop me from eating the amazing seafood. The restaurant is right off V 168N and worth the drive. You order the food at a counter then you have to go up to another counter to receive your meal after your number is called. Nothing fancy. I usually stick with the shrimp and scallop combo because they have the sweetest scallops I have ever had, and the fried shrimp taste fresh. Great local seafood place. The shrimp tacos are great and my wife gets the shrimp pita every time we come and we're still looking for something to compete back where we live. Excellent Oysters! Simply Excellent! I've driven by here a hundred times over the years and never stopped in. However I went down to the Hatteras for a fishing tournament last week and we stopped in here and picked up a bushel of oysters. The price was $70 which was excellent and we packed them in ice and took them down to the beach house in Avon. The staff was very friendly and even took the oysters out to the truck on a dolly. I had quick moment to look around and am definitely going to be making a stop in here again on my next OBX trip to have some shrimp. On to the oysters. Once we got settled in down in Avon we broke out the equipment and had one hell of an oyster roast. Every oyster was fat and plump with a crunchy bite. They didn't need any sauce at all. The entire bushel was consumed in just a few hours. Totally worth it, they'll have my business again soon! read more

I would've never known to stop here if it wasn't for our church's 1-hour drive just to eat at this place. Frog Island Seafood looks like a total dump from the outside, and the inside isn't much better. The tables are a bit sticky, everything is old, and it smells like fish. So no, this isn't a place you come to for the ambiance. But the seafood is amazing! The prices are pretty amazing too. They had a special on the day I went - softshell crab, shrimp, 2 hush puppies, and 2 sides for $12.99! The softshell crab really was good. I usually don't order the softshell crab because it's generally on the verge of becoming a hard shell crab again. But this guy was really soft - I could barely tell that there was any skin. Everything was fresh, and the shrimp were cooked just the right amount of time so that it wasn't overcooked/rubbery. I got everything fried, but I heard there's an option to get your food broiled too. As for the hush puppies, they were a bit too sweet for me, although my husband seemed to find them especially delicious. On the other hand, the fried okra had too much "okra" healthy taste going on for my husband, but I liked them because they weren't overwhelmed by the fried batter. Matter of opinion, I guess. My one knock was that I was still a bit hungry after I finished eating. There's an easy solution though. After lunch, you should drive the less than 1 mile to Morris' farmers' stand and get dessert (as well as tons of samples). read more

After all the good reviews and passing by for years, we decided to stop by on our way home. There are two main points to this review - the food and the cleanliness. We weren't sure what to expect when we stepped in through the door. You order at a counter, which is fine. There are no waitstaff. There are about 15 tables in the place and three were taken when we arrived. The remaining 12 tables were filthy. We moved 4 times to find a table that wasn't that bad. I had to still wipe it down myself. Had I seen the state of the dining room before we ordered, we would have left. The restroom wasn't much better. But they did have some toilet bowl cleaner sitting in there in case you wanted to tidy up yourself. That was the bad and there actually was some good. The food was quite good. I had the steamed shrimp plate and my wife the rockfish. Everything was hot and tasty. Price was ok. Maybe a touch high. Overall a 3-star review because of the food and value. I'd give a 1 or less for the dining room experience. We passed by for 20 years before we ate at Frog Island. Maybe we'll try it again in 20 years. read more

Pretty good. Had fried scallops that seemed to cool off too quickly unless I was just too slow to eat; but were very good. Spouse had fried clam strips, very good. You order at a window, get a buzzer, and pickup when ready. There are booths and tables, plus large bar area. Lots of fresh seafood at the market to buy and some unusual choices. Will try again. About same price as a mid-grade seafood restaurant; but quicker to eat and go with this setup. read more

They have a lot to offer.. a small seafood market greets you as you walk in. All fresh scallops, oysters, fish, etc.. there are some freezers nearby with salmon, red king crab, and a variety of other frozen seafood. The prices are high.. and I was disappointed to find the shell fish weren't cleaned off.. I had to wash the dirt off them. At these prices I would have expected that to be done for you. Behind the seafood market area there is a restaurant that serves diner style food, burgers, fries, small side salads etc.. not sure of the combination of restaurant connected to a seafood market. The smell takes over throughout the space.. including the dining area. I would def come back for a last minute purchase. But on a regular basis... prices and quality would have to improve. read more

Just took back a bushel of NO GOOD steamed blue crabs to Frog Island Seafood store. We paid good money for the crabs and they were "Green and Black" inside and had an awful odor. I catch and clean crabs from the river behind my house in Portsmouth VA every summer and know what the inside of crabs are supposed to look like. The store refused to return our money and pointed to a hand written sign that said no refund on crabs. We should have seen the sign earlier and asked why they need to post such a sign. They acted like we were idiots and the only ones with a problem and should have just eaten the "green/black nasty stuff." read more

For the price you pay you'd think you'd get better ambience and presentation for the food. The crab cakes were 20 bucks and they had way too much filling and SHELLS. Also they don't make their own tartar sauce.. they give you packets of Kraft. The she crab soup was over seasoned and the blueberry cobbler cheesecake came out of a freezer and tasted freezer burnt :( the issue is you can get WAY better food for that price point elsewhere read more

My husband has always raved about calabash style seafood...yuck. Frog Island does it right. The fried shrimp was crisp and off the boat fresh. It was the best shrimp I have ever eaten. This place is absolutely the best place to get fresh, local seafood. I'm totally speaking about ordering from the market. I have not yet eaten inside or ordered food to go. I have many times ordered fresh seafood to bring home to cook and have been completely satisfied all times. Most previous experience: I wanted to order blue crabs for a graduation party held on a Saturday. I called the prior Thursday and ordered 4 bushels of crabs (#2) to be picked up first thing Saturday morning. For those that don't know, #1's are larger and #2's are not as big. #1's are $120/bushel and #2's are $65/bushel. I ordered 4 bushels of #2's and you can't beat the price of $278! They even steamed it for us free of charge. Of course, you pick it up cold and on ice but they're just as good cold to me! They even gave us 4 containers of old bay with the crabs! They also had fresh shrimp, all types of fish, scallops, soft shelled crabs, homemade crab cakes, and even t-shirts. Come here for all your seafood cravings! read more

I ordered the soft crab dinner. The lady told me comes with 3 pieces crab. After i got the meal and open the box only 2 pieces. I go back and ask one more piece. Another lady told me depends on size may 2 pieces. I told her if i knew it possibly 2 pieces I wouldn't order them. By the way the crab was about 3 inches and the second one was even smaller and dinner cost was $12.99. The meal was expensive, the customer service was very poor and meal was mediocre. Stopped in to grab some dinner. The place is order at the counter and then seat yourself. They call you up and you go get your meal. It's no a frills place. Dad and I both ordered the fried flounder meals. Service was quick and the staff friendly. The flounder was very tasty and fried perfectly. The batter was light and not overpowering the taste of the filet. The meal comes with 2 sides. I had fires and potato salad. The fries were okay but the potato salad was very good and tasty. I had heard so many good things about this place for years. I called in a to go order of oyster stew on my way back through from VA Beach. The oyster stew was okay, not the typical Outer Banks style I am used to but more like Hatteras Clam chowder only with oysters instead of clams. It was good, just not the creamy oyster stew I was looking for. Also, when you call in a take out order and get there to pick it up, they make you stand in line with everyone who is ordering to eat in and/or pick up seafood orders so that there is really no point to calling it in ahead of time. Today, the special was 2 soft crabs plus fried shrimp for around $12 including 2 sides. My wife had the clam strips.
