The training material was presented with great emphasis on gun safety, understanding legalities, hands on weapon training and though understanding of the social responsibility that the CCL entails. I signed up for their 16 Hour Basic Pistol - Illinois Concealed Carry Course with a friend, not knowing what to exactly expect from the class. Upon arrival my first day of class, I could tell right away that our instructors were professional shooters, had been teaching for a long time, and that I was in for an education. Our class was made up of all kinds of people: beginners, experienced shooters, military veterans, and regular people like my buddy and I. Not having much of a shooting background (except for shooting BB guns when I was a kid), I appreciated the first day of class; going over handgun safety, how to select a handgun for purchase, loading / unloading, and handgun cleaning & maintenance. The 2nd day, we learned all about Concealed Carry in Illinois; the laws, the do & don'ts of CCW, how to draw my pistol, how to conceal one, holster selection, police interactions, and what to do if I unfortunately find myself having to use my handgun in self-defense. Not being the greatest shot on the range starting out, the instructors took their time, working one-on-one with me to correct the bad habits I had (jerking the trigger, and shooting with only one eye open). I appreciated that Gretchen kept it real, and seemed to have a good head on her shoulders. One area that I would suggest improvement on is staying away from politics outside of 2nd amendment issues. We're all there because we support that, but the class got veered off track when we started discussing other political areas that we disagreed on. As far as I'm concerned, if it's not 2A, it has no place in the classroom.

My parents took this class last year and had been nudging me to sign up. I kept putting it off because sitting in a classroom for 8 hours over a weekend sounded like a nightmare. But wow, was I wrong. Joe and Terry made the time fly. The class was engaging, informative, filled with real-life examples that tied directly into their experience, all while tying in their great senses of humor. It was clear this wasn't just a dull PowerPoint read-along like I feared I'd get elsewhere. Their team is equally amazing: super personable and helpful, both in the classroom and out on the range. Mike, the instructor, gives whatever is required to make sure you understand the material and shoot properly, even if you've never shot before. If you don't own a firearm, first get your FOID card, then buy a .22 or .380 pistol. Get a medium sized pistol, not a small concealed type. You can get a little one after you learn how to shoot. You can bring the larger size to the concealed carry class.

Matt is an excellent instructor who clearly knows what he is doing, is a professional and is very patient (good for me, ha!). Even if you never decide to carry, his class teaches you some real good things on situational awareness that you can take away and use in your everyday life. Matt also has a firearms simulator where you can run drills that you would not be able to do on the range.
