This weekend I took the CCL class with Joe and Terry, and I honestly can't recommend them enough. I've been shooting for a few years now, but I walked away from the class feeling much more confident in my knowledge and aware of how much more there is to learn and stay sharp on. My parents took this class last year and had been nudging me to sign up. I kept putting it off because sitting in a classroom for 8 hours over a weekend sounded like a nightmare. But wow, was I wrong. Joe and Terry made the time fly. The class was engaging, informative, filled with real-life examples that tied directly into their experience, all while tying in their great senses of humor. It was clear this wasn't just a dull PowerPoint read-along like I feared I'd get elsewhere. Their team is equally amazing: super personable and helpful, both in the classroom and out on the range. I didn't catch everyone's names, but every single staff member made the environment feel comfortable and judgment-free, which I really appreciated. I can only imagine how much that meant to the people shooting for the first time. If you're on the fence about taking this class don't be. If you're okay with politics being brought up in the classroom and being sold products from outside vendors such as USCCA then go for it. All new ccl holders which most are unknowledgeable and the instructors just let a salesman come in to sell ccl insurance without giving any non bias information or inform us about our other options. Also look into finger printing before going to the class to make sure you're well informed for your own decision. Wise instructors and very knowledgeable but these two things makes me wary of this class. read more

Signed up for Joes CCL class shortly after receiving my FOID. When I say I was new to this, I literally had never handled - let alone shot - a gun before. I was super nervous that I would stand out as the dumb newbie but was happy to fade into a class of about 75 folks from all backgrounds. New as me, former infantry, the entire spectrum was in attendance. Walked away with a good handle of the legality of carrying. Enjoyed listening to Joes stories from the police force. I'd probably come back with popcorn just to hear him talk. The range portion was of particular stress for me. As someone who suffers from PTSD, I wasn't sure if I would even complete this portion. Because of the size of the group, I was able to watch and wait until my turn. Joe put me in good hands with Dean, one of the instructors for students renting that day. He made me feel comfortable and didn't rush me at all. Will come back for other classes Joe teaches when they are available. Well run class, look no further! 5 stars for location, value, friendly and knowledgeable staff, benefits of class, and classroom organization. The location is superb. On Route 59, right off the highway, surrounded by shops and restaurants (I was told to do a PSA and warn everyone to go to the jerk chicken place- sorry, jerk chicken place, nothing against you but half the class went there for lunch and all gave a thumbs down). If I could give these guys medals, I would. They're so cool! All staff are former police, SWAT, and law enforcement personnel. The kind that doesn't intimidate you, instead, make you a better civilian. The CCW class size was pretty healthy at about 70 people for the weekend class. The two day weekend class goes through licensing in IL and FL, insurance, state laws, safety, and shooting accuracy. Value: self defense and safety for yourself and your family are priceless. If we are to talk about the dollar value for this class, which I took advantage from a Groupon deal, btw, it's still the best deal. Learning gun safety, use, the laws of ownership and use, are invaluable. Even if you don't ever want to own a gun or get a license to carry, this class is still great to take. Shout out to Joe Motto and Terry for giving the insights of a cop, to us civilians and telling us the how tos and the appropriate actions to take in a situation and making this learning experience fun, informative, and extremely useful. What a GREAT class! Informative, engaging, and fun! My hubby and I had been talking about taking a CCL course for a while, but I was dragging my feet not wanting to endure 16 hrs of boring, legalese lectures. Signed up with West Suburban Concealed Carry because of its 5~star reviews and its proximity. The reviewer who commented on the deliciously brewed coffee was spot on. Coffee, water, and goodies galore awaited us. Joe and Terry (our two main instructors) were friendly and welcoming. They kept the class entertained and engaged. They are both policemen and it was nice hearing their 'real-life' stories about concealed carry events. We were educated as to what to expect if we are ever in an event ourselves. What to say... what not to say... what to do when responding officers arrive in order to avoid being mistaken for the 'bad guy'. There was time on the firing range after everyone qualified for their CCL for extra practice and instruction. Basically, a private lesson for those who were interested. Students who didn't own guns were able to rent guns at the range. A nice way to 'try-before-you-buy'. I just completed the concealed carry class this past weekend with Joe, and I now feel confident in safely owning and operating firearms in the state of Illinois. Joe is the type of instructor that is needed for everyone that has no clue about the gun laws in Illinois, and how to safely interact with police when you are legally carrying firearms. Joe is very accommodating to his students, and his sense of humor keeps the class engaged. He gives out great recommendations during class such as; prepaid legal insurance, guns to purchase, firearm training courses etc. I have to say that out of all the classes I've taken in college (and I've taken alot) this was the most important 16 hours of my life. I'm glad I invested in myself by taking this class. Also, the expenses for taking Joe and Terry's class can add up very quickly, so please take advantage of the discount for couples ($99 for 2 or more people). The finger prints are not required for the CCL application which cost between $55(cash payment) and $65(credit card payment). Also, the range fee is $20, and an additional $15 to rent a gun from Joe if you don't have your own gun. Overall, this is a great class for people who are both beginners and advanced. Joe and Terry were excellent instructors. They made the whole process less intimidating and focused heavily on law and realistic scenarios vs just going through a punchlist and dry material. Having a concealed carry is a very important responsibility which warrants proper instruction. Joe and Terry do a great job keeping the course fun but safety and responsibility are always at the forefront. As a gun owner, hunter and enthusiast who was introduced to hunting and guns at the age of 5, I can legitimately say I learned a lot, even with 35 years of experience with guns. If you are interested in IL concealed carry, even if you are ultimately not going to get the permit and just want to be better educated on the subject, take Joe and Terrys course, they are as good as it gets. Going into this class I had never shot a gun prior, and I was intimated by the thought of doing so. However after my training at West Suburban I left feeling immensely confident in not only the use of a firearm but the law as well. Joe and Terry, being police officers, offer a unique perspective as they teach you all that's necessary to get your concealed carry permit. As someone who has only had some experience with air pistols, I now have a greater respect for gun ownership & concealed carry, I've learned how to properly hold a gun for better control and accuracy, and I now understand the importance of finding the right gun to purchase and use for concealed carry. I literally spent months researching the CCW class in Illinois and then I came across this gem. I'm not going to lie, I was nervous registering for the simple fact that I never shot a gun nevertheless touched one! When the day came my nerves were going crazy, but I kid you not, when you sit down and watch the other 50+ people come in and joe starts talking and cracking jokes you'll feel much better. Joe was very personable. He was able to get the whole class involved. We had people who never shot a gun to people who've been shooting for 20+ years -very diverse. I enjoyed the class because we went a lot of material, but it wasn't all slide show; there were activities for the holster, we had the range which was amazing, especially once you hit the target! Terry is the quiet one, but very informative! He goes over some key material as well and is considered the bad cop (jk) haha. But all in all, if you want to get your CCW or even your FOID and CCW then sign up with joe and terry! You'll be able to get your electronic fingerprints there as well and even for the Florida application. Trust me, this is a one stop and done shop! You won't regret it! Joe is a good instructor and very knowledgeable and the class was relaxed and fun. He went over most of the laws of the State and what you should and should not do when carrying and or using a weapon. I would give 5 stars except for a couple of negatives : The class was crowded ( about 60- 70 people ). I expected much smaller number. Also the practical parts mentioned in the class description like using laser trainers, firing from behind barriers and practicle shooting techniques were ommitted from the class. Maybe because of the class size, I don't know. This also resulted in long waiting times at the range and people were getting frustrated by the lady calling the shooters names which was done in some convoluted random way of her choosing rather than by last name, which would've been much simpler to follow. Also, it would be nice if they can chose one of the much closer ranges instead of one 22 miles away considering there is at least two in Naperville/Aurora in very close proximity to the academy. All in all it was fun and I would come back again for my renewal. read more
