We hired Dick to do two major projects and felt we were in good hands. First, Dick installed new supports in our basement and jacked up the house. Amazing perfection and we passed inspections from the city. Next, Dock repaired our interior stairs that were falling away from the wall! He's creative and thorough. I hate to even mention Dick Frye's name for fear of raising manfriend's blood pressure. We moved into a new house a few months ago and the only way out the back of the house was a sliding glass door, which isn't the most secure option. I'm pretty sure my cats could've jimmied the door open if there was a piece of ham dangling on the other side of it. We looked around and decided on a Thermatru patio door. Lee Lumber sold the door and referred us to Dick Frye. I took a peek at Yelp reviews before Dick came to our house. In hindsight, I should've given the negative ones more weight, but the door distributor referred him, so I thought was a pretty good endorsement. He came out, measured and told us how he'd approach the project; at that point everything sounded good. At that point, we should have asked for references, a certificate of insurance, taken extensive pictures of the state of our back door before anything was done. Instead, what we did was ask him to send us a proposal. I was home the day the door was installed. I don't know much about door installations, but he seemed to take his time and for the most part, the door itself is installed well. There is one noticeable spot that's a bit off; it causes the door hinge to squeak, but again not the end of the world. Again, here's where we should've taken more pictures of the interior and exterior of the door. It's also where things went sideways. Dick asked to come back the next day and put the trim on the inside and make the outside look "like it did before." We didn't stay home for this and that we regret terribly. The outside was a disaster. We were speechless at the quality of the job and that he had the nerve to tell us that's what it looked like before when we called to complain. If you compared the back door to our front door and every window (and there are many), it's clear it is not. No j-channel, exposed wood, and some weird hack at the top of the frame that likely would create ice dams in winter. We had someone come out and he wouldn't even touch it because he had no idea how he did what he did; another two agreed it needed correcting. When we refused to pay the balance until we could get it sorted out, he conceded that it didn't come out as he expected and it was harder than he anticipated. Yet, he got angry that we'd have someone else correct it. Manfriend asked him out to explain what he did, in hopes of having someone else properly fix it. Against his better judgement, manfriend decided to let him come back with a siding person to properly repair the back. It's mostly ok; the siding wasn't cut long enough to properly slide under the j-channel in a few spots, but overall it is a vast improvement over what was originally done. We would never hire Dick Frye to do anything for us after this experience; like I said, his name is almost a dirty word in our house. I feel lucky that manfriend has construction experience because I don't think he was expecting us to push back at all and in the state the outside of our door originally was left, we would've had wood rot and water damage in a few years. I'm only giving two stars because the installation of the overall door itself was fine. read more

Dick did a great job on my office, fixing a bunch of plumbing and remodeling kitchenette and bath. He also re-did my signage. Dick got everything done quickly and worked with our budget. read more

I had a hard time getting Dick to cooperate. I needed him to give me a quote on a sliding glass door installation. He said that it couldn't be done in the way that I wanted. Well, he was wrong, way wrong and we had someone else do it. To top it off, Dick quoted us 3X what the others quoted. Don't bother with this guy. read more

I agree with Mary T. This cranky old guy needs to hang up his tool belt. He's disagreeable, abrasive, rude, and does an average job at best. And he's not cheap. If Lee Lumber is referring him, shame on them! Makes me question what's in it for Lee Lumber. Do yourself a favor and take a pass. read more

I NEVER write unfavorable reviews but felt I needed to in this instance. We hired Dick based on recommendation from studio 41 to install the exhaust hood and channel the exhaust to the exterior of the house.. He also did a shower head install and had a refinisher refinish a pull out drawer in our bathroom. Most of the stuff done was done by others (custom duct cover, electricians, tile and refinishers). He did a fine job at installing what the others had done however, we had MANY issues with obtaining. the correct duct cover. We ordered 2 separate duct covers upon his and ABTs recommendation based on the exhaust hood we ordered and each time he told us it wouldn't work. Dragged on for months. We then decided upon his recommendation to do a custom duct cover, with the idea we wanted to see more of our backsplash. As this was done we had the duct cover in the box to return. We discovered when we went to return it, the duct cover wasn't in the box. No other workers were in our home after the custom duct cover was installed. I therefore, called Dick to inquire if by chance he may have used the duct cover to show the fabricator who did the custom cover. He was the only person who ever saw, looked at or touched this duct cover to be returned. I don't think anyone would argue, calling the contractor about it, made logical sense. He was immediately defensive that I would ask him about the duct cover. THIS is what made me wonder, why was he so upset about me asking about it? He was the only other person we ever had a discussion with about this at our home. He wasn't understanding or even apologetic that it was missing. He was only upset about why I would even ask him about it. So now, we have no duct cover to return and we are out $700. Where the duct cover is, no idea. Dick has very poor customer service as this wasn't the only instance when he was defensive and abrasive. It frustrating enough to go through home renovations, its even more frustrating when the 'Professionals' you work with are confrontational and uncooperative. read more

I hired Richard Frye to replace wood floors, repair drywall and fix a few odds and ends in my apartment after some water damage. His quote was $2000 less than what the other contractor quoted me - the other contractor also said I needed to replace a few other items that really didn't need replacing. He was honest and professional and I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. read more

Never got to see his work! After his estimate for work he never responded to 5 days of texting and Email and phone calls. No response, no explaination, no communication!!!! GOOD impression up front but just blew us off with NO explaination! Don't depend on Rich Freye!!!! read more

Worst experience ever. I could probably write pages about what he did wrong but I'll try and keep it short. He told us he would start work in May/June but was so unorganized he didn't actually get everything together to start the work until September. He didn't finish the work until late November, for something that really shouldn't have taken more than a couple weeks. We've had tons of work done at our other home and it's never taken this long. The first room he finished he put up the wrong tile and then tried to convince us that it looked nice and that we should keep it because he was too lazy to redo it. (We had him redo it.) Never would apologize for doing something wrong, gave a lot of attitude. He was rude, would come in it at 8am speaking full volume on his phone waking up everyone in the house, (knowing that people were sleeping.) Told us that he would cover the furniture the day that they tore everything down. He lied and told us he did when I returned home I noticed that absolutely NOTHING was covered, everything was covered in dust and he continued to lie about, even when people that were at the house at the time confirmed he covered nothing. He ran out of tile for one bathroom and tried to hide it by putting a tile that looked kind of like it and awkwardly covered it with the shower hose. He had to come back multiple times after he "finished" to fix his half-assed job. I could go on and on. Most unprofessional contractor I've ever worked with. Would not recommend him to ANYONE. Those couples months were a complete nightmare. read more

I have contracted with Richard Frye on a number of projects and have found him to be very knowledgeable, experienced, and highly respectful of both person and property. He is very detail oriented and also quite creative, especially when having to work around the idiosyncrasies of old buildings, which I greatly admire.
