For my money, the movie's greatest scene revolved around Cuba Gooding, Jr. He played the role of a cook aboard the USS West Virginia when it was torpedoed by Japanese bomber planes on December 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The movie shows him cradling his dying superior officer in has lap, then in a rage manning an anti-aircraft machine gun and without any training on the weapon, shooting down several Japanese planes. That movie character was based on a real man and the actions depicted in the movie are real. The Navy cook's name was Petty Officer Second Class Doris (Dorie) Miller of Waco, Texas. He was an athlete, and played fullback on his high school team. In 1939, when he was 20 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a mess attendant third class. Two years later, his heroism and resulting newspaper accounts of his actions made him an American hero. He was the first Black American to be awarded the Navy Cross for combat valor. Miller was killed in action just two years later when his carrier was sunk by a Japanese submarine. In his honor, the Navy named an escort frigate after him (The USS Miller) in the 1970's. A nuclear powered aircraft carrier to be launched in 2029 will also be named in his honor. The memorial is located on the grounds of Doris D Miller Park on the banks of Brazos River in close proximity to the famous Waco Suspension Bridge. The memorial shows Petty Officer Second Class Miller standing tall and looking straight ahead in front of an abstract metal sculpture representing his ship. There are relief panels nearby that tell the story of this hero's life.

The bridge spans 475-feet, and at one point, was considered the longest single-span suspension bridge west of the Mississippi. The Waco Suspension Bridge is majestic, yet aesthetically pleasing. It now serves as a pedestrian crossing. When you walk out on the bridge, it is peaceful, quiet and serene. Listening to the water meander under the bridge almost puts you in a trance. In addition to the bridge, the steers in the front of the bridge are being renovating...painted and sealed with hot wax.

He made sure I felt comfortable throughout and kept the experience engaging with local history and stories. We cruised around the Trinity Garden, which ended up being one of my favorite parts. I spent about 10 mins trying all the different things our tour guide asked me to practice. I pickled it up very easily. Everyone did so as well. Anyone can ride segways. I wish we had more segways all over the country. Tour started off in the downtown Fort Worth area. We stopped at many historic destinations along the way. Tour guide was very funny and very knowledgeable. My favorite part was by the riverside. Absolutely gorgeous weather to ride Segways and made our trip even more memorable with lots of great pics. Our tour guide took some incredible pics of us. Highly recommend this experience if you're trying to do something cool and fun.

As a National Park enthusiast, I was really excited to learn this site wasn't too far from my…read morefriend's house and so I was ecstatic to visit Waco Mammoth National Monument while in Texas. I'm also glad I happened to bring my National Park passport (you just never know!) Anyway, Waco Mammoth is definitely one of the more unusual units of the National Park System I've visited but also worth the visit!!! The history behind the site is fascinating. After two men discovered bones in 1978, researchers from Baylor University and other institutions began excavating the area and quickly realized they had uncovered something incredible! More and more fossils were found and in 2015 my guy President Obama established the site as an official unit of the National Park System. Though, one thing visitors should know ahead of time is that even though this is a National Park Service site, our America the Beautiful passes do NOT work here. General entry to the park grounds is free, but there is a separate fee to enter the dig shelter because it is operated in partnership with the City of Waco to help support preservation efforts. The actual dig shelter is absolutely the highlight of the experience, though you'll need to join a guided tour led by a docent. Hopefully you end up with one who is especially knowledgeable and enthusiastic because that really makes the experience come alive. I loved seeing the nation's first and only recorded evidence of a nursery herd of Colombian Mammoths from the Ice Age! So neat. At least 19 mammoths were discovered and the jury (err, scientists) are still out on how exactly these mammoths came to be trapped at this site/the reasoning for their passing. Anyway, this is a fascinating stop and absolutely worth visiting if you're in the Waco area, especially if you enjoy history, science, paleontology, or just visiting National Park units. It's not a full-day destination by any means, but it's definitely educational, memorable, and offers something very different from the typical national park experience!

This was a nice walk. Saw a few homeless people. They were nice and friendly. I understand that they had renovated the suspension bridge recently. It's a nice park and area to walk around.

It was a fun experience and much busier than we expected. We really didn't know what to expect going in, but the museum focuses more on the history of Dr Pepper and the soft drink industry than on interactive exhibits. One interesting thing we learned is that the museum is actually a nonprofit organization and is not operated by the Dr Pepper company. We also did the "Make Your Own Soda" experience. It was fun and unique, although it seemed to be geared more toward younger kids. Your general admission ticket also includes a free drink, which was a nice bonus. The gift shop was well stocked with some unique Dr Pepper merchandise that we hadn't seen anywhere else, although it was a little small and could get crowded. Parking was easy and conveniently located across the street for $10. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed the experience. If you're already visiting Waco, I definitely recommend stopping by. However, I probably wouldn't make the trip to Waco just for the museum alone.

As a longtime Dr Pepper enthusiast, I especially enjoyed learning about the brand's history and seeing how it has evolved over the years. Admission is very reasonably priced, around $10-$12 per person, and children ages 3 and under are admitted free. The museum is well-maintained, clean, and organized across three floors of exhibits and historical displays. Since it's a self-guided experience, you can explore at your own pace. I'd estimate most visitors will spend about 1 to 1.5 hours here, though history buffs could easily spend closer to two hours. After touring the museum, be sure to stop by the gift shop, which offers a wide selection of Dr Pepper memorabilia and merchandise. Needless to say, I left with more than a few items. One of the highlights of the visit is the complimentary soda included with admission. Each ticket comes with a voucher that can be redeemed at the soda fountain, where the drink is prepared right in front of you. It has a slightly different taste than what you might be used to, but I found it refreshing and enjoyable. There is also an additional area with more historical displays and information to browse while enjoying your drink. Overall, this was a fun and worthwhile experience. Whether you're a dedicated Dr Pepper fan or simply interested in a unique piece of Texas history, the museum is well worth a visit.

There is some parking here though it might be busy if there is a service underway. The marker reads, "In 1861, Dr. Rufus C. Burleson (1823-1901) resigned as president of Baylor University (then located at Independence) to become head of the Waco Classical School, which had been founded in 1856 as the Trinity River Male High School by the Rev. Solomon G. O'Bryan. For 25 years Burleson worked tirelessly to make Waco University, as it was renamed in 1861, the pre-eminent Baptist College in the state, and by the early 1880s enrollment had reached over 400 students. In 1886, the Waco and Independence institutions were unified as Baylor University at Waco." It is marker number 5695 and was erected in 1986 by the Texas Historical Commission. The marker reads, "One of the most disastrous tornadoes in Texas history swept through downtown Waco on the afternoon of May 11, 1953, killing 114 people, destroying 346 buildings and creating property damage in excess of $50 million. Some of the worst devastation occurred at this site, where 22 employees of the R.T. Dennis Furniture Company died when the building collapsed. Aid to the city came in the form of volunteer and, military rescue forces and donations totaling over $9 million. The rescue and restoration efforts that followed reflected Waco's strong sense of pride and community spirit."
