Used to be my local movie theater for first run movies. Then COVID hit and I don't know if they ever recovered for first run movies. Last movie I saw there was the Joker. They might have movies now but I don't think it's first runs and more. read more

It's a Hard No! Avoid the Waco Hippodrome theater if you desire to do a performance here. Our non-profit was going to be doing a performance sometime this summer 2025 and I reached out to this venue right after the holidays sometime in February I believe. I wasn't asking for much just to be able to come by and see the possible space that we would be using and get the particulars on how much it would cost us or if it would take a percentage of the ticket sales that kind of thing. Several days went by without a response. So I actually called and got The Lovable Miss Congeniality herself Michelle who was about as helpful as a snake bite in the desert with no medical. She explained to me there's only one person that can help me and that's aaron. Turns out it took another several days to total an exact week before he got back to me. I responded by both Facebook Messenger phone text email and it was still another 4 days. After that I gave him a few Choice words and said I would be looking elsewhere which I did. So I narrowed it down to a couple in the area but did not like the pricing from those other venues so I thought it would go back to Hippodrome one more time and give them a second chance...bad idea. This second time when I emailed unfortunately Aaron was up to his old tricks and after hours and hours from an email that I sent which I know we got cuz he's a younger guy he's younger people get their texts and emails instantly they look at them and then decide whether to respond or not. I'm quite certain he looked at it and decided again like he did back in February not to respond in a timely manner and thus we're pulling the plug on any hope with the hippodrome theater and leaving them this well-deserved bad review. As far as a spectator I saw the Eagles wanna group a few years ago... it's like a tribute group to the Eagles and we were up in the balcony and it wasn't very comfortable and you had to kind of see through either the beams or some of the hand railing. It wasn't a very pleasant experience up there in the balcony. Other reviews have said that the food really sucks and is horrible. I don't know about that I cannot comment on that. The physical location seems cool because its historic it is right downtown Waco but they're giving this Historic Landmark a huge black eye by having p*ss poor customer service, ...actually nonexistent customer service. read more

This is one of my favorite brunch places in Waco, the signature fries are a MUST have with any meal. They recently did a huge renovation - I have yet to see an actual movie here though...Their new dining space is a bit smaller but it's definitely got a cute 80's diner vibe (sorry if I got the decade wrong...but think old school diner vibes with the mod bar stools - like Danny from Grease is how I would describe it) The only think i'm a bit sad about is that they raised the price of the mimosa carafe from $8 to $15...and now use a different champagne, that's not quite on par with the old one??? (not sure but it tasted different) Otherwise, I still love the food and I love the new atmosphere, I have yet to check out the roof top patio which is only open for dinner read more

The Waco Hippodrome theater is a small historic theater with lots of charm. They offer a brunch on the weekends on the second floor. The brunch menu is small and adorned with cute movie titles, but the food is average at best. The service was okay, most of the servers lacked personality and enthusiasm, and my order came out wrong, but overall they were at least polite. I definitely enjoyed the experience of the theater, but overall I feel like they could step their brunch game up a little. read more

Not impressed. It's a dinner and a movie type of theater in an old live performance theater, so it has character and potential. The reason I'm only giving it 2 stars is because they need to renovate the seating arrangements, which lack any dasness whatsoever. First of all, there are not very many good seats, so you'd better show up early to be happy. Also, the chairs are padded folding chairs, and the dining tables are essentially long folding tables. An investment in the seating area to improve chairs, and screen viewability is needed, but not sure it will ever be great because the seating is so steep and close to the screen. The three stars this place has is more than it deserves. It's a REALLY cute concept. They have a theater where you could see shows such as improve, live acting, etc. plus they have theaters. Right outside the live theater (in the entryway of the entire building) they have a photobooth backdrop set up. Honestly, it was a nuisance and annoying to feel like you're walking through people's photos. They are trying to compete with others like Star Cinema and District Theater and falling short. They have large leather seats that do not have a recline option. The tray moves to you and away from you when you get up. When buying tickets online it suggests arriving 30 min early to order food despite having arranged seating (you buy your seat). If the movie states it begins at 8:30, it is actually starting at 8:30, unlike other theaters where you typically have a grace period from commercials/ads. So arriving early is a good suggestion. When we purchased our seats, someone was sitting in them and we had to get assistance requesting they move. Which obviously is not the theaters fault. They asked them to move, and they did but the movie had already started and it took them a full 10 minutes to move. THE ISSUE: my husband I were handed someone else's card and when I acknowledged it with our waiter and he resolved, he did not even apologize. He actually seemed annoyed that "I had inconvenienced him." Then we found out at the end when the lights came on that we had been charged for someone else's food that had alcohol and we did not!!! We were super frustrated. When we went to the front no one was at the desk. We left them a note on the rec about our experience and that I planned to leave a review on yelp. Overall it was a frustrating experience! If we lived near here and this was our options in entertainment we would visit again but I would pay in cash or credit card & not debit. I would have stayed to request a refund, charge for the correct amount or something. read more

Just saw The Lion King at the hippodrome and it was a fantastic experience. Best theater in the Waco area, and I know that's not saying much because the other theaters are filthy rat holes, but I was surprised to see the hippodrome had so many terrible reviews. Here's the secret, you eat before you come here or you buy tickets online, reserve your seat, show up 20 mins before your movie time, immediately order all the food when you arrive. If you order the food 20 mins before the movie starts, you're food/drinks will get to you before the movie starts. I hate ordering food right before the movie starts because they have to serve it while the movie is playing and it can be really distracting to me and people around me. Best to come early if you plan on ordering food/drinks. If you're ordering a bunch of cocktails it's best to sit near the aisle to get better access to service and to the bathroom! I've seen a few tipsy people struggling to make to the bathroom, disrupting everyone in the theater because they sat furthest from the aisle. Anyway we had a blast watching the movie Saturday night. The food was actually good. I had the american burger with fried okra and sweet tea. My aunt ordered fried pickles and they were a little heavy but good. Service was great, we ordered 20 mins early and the server didn't have to interrupt viewing as much. Note: I haven't tried everything on the menu, so I can't say it's all good. I know for a fact the pretzels with beer cheese is terrible, waay too salty. The flavored teas are not good either. Actually I hate almost all their drink choices, even the sweet tea was lacking. And dasani water is gross, it makes me thirsty and dries out my throat. I wish they served fresh lemonade (not bottled minute maid!!) to go with all that southern food! My first experience to see a movie here was a flop. We went on a date night to see a Star is born & I wish I could have watched the movie Apparently the concept was good but not executed; meaning you sit & order food & drinks and enjoy a movie. This did not happen at the end when we got our bill we were charged for stuff I wish we would have gotten. Needless to say we were not the only ones. There was a line to get refunds on overcharges. If I were to rate my experience from a 0 to 10 meaning 10 is the best. I would rate my overall experience a one. read more

But the management claimed as a rebuttal to my last review that they have had management changes and they did some obvious upgrades to the theater...however...after being seated, our server looked at me as if I was from another planet when I asked for kid menus, then she never brought them out. Our orders were either missing or incorrect, the for the birds (chicken wings) should have been left for the birds as they clearly were not acceptable for human consumption. The nacho libre platter was soggy and it appeared as if it was heated up in the microwave. Although I ordered 3 buckets of popcorn beforehand and specifically requested it to be brought out promptly, it arrived 20 minutes after the main order. I had to ask for sweetener for my tea no less than four times and my refill never showed up. I spent $65 on 7 seats and $102 before taxes $18 service fee and 18% tip because no one person should be blamed for the horrendous service...for a grand total of about $200...save your money for a venue that will respect its patrons enough to provide adequate service... UPDATE: since renovating and adding so much to this location, including The Raleigh and The Hightop Bar, their service has just dwindled. I mean just flat out bad. We first visited since their renovation, to their new theater that includes very comfortable reclining seats. The seats are the best! The service was absolutely awful however. My son couldn't receive his drink after asking 2 different servers 4 times. He ordered a burger and fries with ketchup and mustard. Took 5 different times asking to receive the ketchup and mustard. By the time he received his drink and condiments, it was cold. Just all around lack of attention and very basic service. Second attempt was today at their brunch service at The Raleigh. Absolutely beautiful location. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and proceeded to wait maybe 5 mins for our table. This is where things take a very poor turn. We waited 10+ mins to be greeted by a server and ask for a drink order. By the time we were greeted, the irritation has really set in. Let me also say, it was not busy! This is a very small location and to have tables that are dirty and trash on the floor all while servers are talking is beyond unprofessional. My son ordered French toast with bacon. THEY WERE OUT OF FRENCH TOAST! how do you run out of French toast for brunch?! Ridiculous. My husband orders eggs Benedict and I tried their chicken and waffles. The only redeeming food we were served was their fruit cup. Son received pancakes, burnt and so dense an eight year old wouldn't eat it. My waffles were so over done I needed a knife to cut them and the chicken was burnt. Husbands eggs Benedict were more like hard boiled eggs with burnt muffin. The lack of attention from servers is just baffling, but this is ultimately poor management. I hate to say we will likely not return. We choose a high-top table near a window looking over Austin Ave. My boyfriend and I stopped for just one beer. I'm glad we did. It was the type of place we don't have in Madison. After reading about this historic theatre we wanted to check it out before we left town and were greeted by some really nice people who allowed us to tour the theatre and check out the renovations! We did not stay for a meal but would definitely come back in the future because of the enthusiasm of the staff there! The dining area has been completely remodeled and I can imagine having a nice dinner here in the evening before watching a film or even dining in the theatre if you chose to! Conveniently located in a nice historic section of Waco this place has a lot of charm and history and some very nice people working there! I love these old style theaters...you can almost feel the history of the souls who might have sat here in the thirties and forties. Charming and elegant. If you are looking for something different, this is it. Basically, this is kind of like the Alamo Draft house or Studio Movie Grill where you can enjoy a meal while watching a movie. The cons: the sound system is not the best so in times of the movie where there is quiet dialog sometimes gets lost. Also, I had ordered one of the burgers and it was good but not the best. (Lacked seasoning and would have loved a toasted bun) Also, the website address brought us a couple miles south of the theater. I also smashed my hand in the folding chair that was my seat. The pros: it is an antique building designed for entertainment for over 100 years. They also have a dining room that over looks the street below which would be perfect for a date night. Lots of charm. I would probably come back now that I know how to not smash my hand in the seat and maybe order something else on the menu. read more

This is a really fun place! We had lunch here on a Saturday and the experience was great. The menu was the same as the theater menu that day. This is a new place and they are still trying out different menu items but all four meals at our table were very tasty and nicely presented. The food is all named after movie titles. We started out with the chips and queso with extra chorizo and salsa, which had a unique flavor that had me wanting to take some home for later. For my meal I had the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - a robust chicken sandwich served with lightly fried french fries. We ate in the restaurant on the second floor with a view of downtown through the floor to nearly ceiling windows. The service was quick, efficient and friendly. We did not see a movie but the couple we were with had done so on several occasions and had a pleasant experience each time. The owner has made some great improvements to the theater since the opening. They have upgraded the sound equipment and added a bunch of speakers so that every seat has perfect sound. I learned this during a private tour we had of the stage. (They will give a behind the scenes tour to anyone who asks - as long as there is no movie in progress!) Great food. I plan to eat here 5 days in a row (Mon - Fri) so this is day 3 of 5. Yesterday(12-15-15) I had Meatloaf Blueplate special and it was delicious. Today (Wed)(12-16-15) I had the Chicken Fried Steak Blueplate special. I like the fact that the served the gravy on the side but was not thrilled when it was served with white gravy. Also, the steak was slightly charred but certainly edible. On both days, the waiter and waitress brought me my lunch and I never heard from them again until I was ready to go. Tuesday, I had to physically get up and ask for my check. On Wednesday, after I was finished and asked for my check then the waitress asked if I wanted dessert. Service so far has been lukewarm at best. I still can give them more than 3 stars at this point. Two more days to go. Thursday(12-15-15 Today was Fried Catfish. I'm not a real big fan of fried foods especially Catfish but it was lightly battered and fried crispy. It was served with cole slaw and curly fries and 3 shrimp. The shrimp again was friend in the same batter as the Catfish. Perhaps there's nothing wrong with it but I'm not use to seeing the same batter on my shrimp that I see on my fish. I also wish they would alternate the sides a bit more for day of the week they have the Blueplate specials. The coleslaw and hushpuppies were consistent. Dessert today was a red velvet cake and although I'm not a big dessert person the cake was very good. The coffee was horrible again and I will not order it again. They got me twice so I guess coffee must not be there thing. I had a different waiter today and pretty much the same level of interaction (practically none). He dropped the food off and then did not come back to the table until he brought me the dessert. I had no idea dessert was included. Two day's I got to dessert and the other two day I didn't also. Also, this is another pet peeve of mine. I had to use my dinner fork to eat my dessert. I know you may be thinking this is so picky. It's really not that but who wants to suck the catfish grease off of their fork so they can then stick it in their cake? Not me but its my fault not his I simply should have insisted on a dessert fork. One more day to go. read more

Review from a born and raised Wacoan: I love the Hippodrome and appreciate the elegant and classic decor. The fact that Waco has finally made it into a multi-purpose venue(theater, restaurant, wedding venue, etc) makes my heart so happy! That being said, the Hippodrome still has a long way to go before I can say it is an exquisite experience. I came here on a Sunday afternoon @1:30. The theater itself is okay but some of the seats towards the front suck because they aren't elevated enough so if you are short, you won't be able to see. The MAIN FLAW is the customer service. I'm sorry to say this, but the customer service here is so bad that I almost do not want to recommend my friends to come here! If you are going to offer food with the movie then please make sure the food comes when you are watching the movie, otherwise, this is no different than watching a movie and then going out to eat right after it! Also, I think the Hippodrome needs to hire a hell of a lot more waiters. There were 3 in a theater of 30+ seats. Also, you can't pick your seats in advance. So if you want a good seat, you'd better get there early or else you'll be stuck looking at the back of somebody's head. Overall, I would recommend the Hippodrome as simply a place to sight see when in Waco... I would not recommend it to actually go watch a movie in just quite yet because I think there are a lot of flaws that still need to be tweaked! read more

Overrated !! Clap clap clap clap clap!! OVERRATED Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap!! Some of you baseball fans from the 90s will know what I'm talking about here.... So Anyways, the food is Way over priced, and it takes FOREVER; to add insult to injury, I could barely hear inside the movie theater as the movie was playing. We watched the Avengers and I missed like 30% of it because I simply could not hear it. I had to keep guessing what the characters were saying. I kept asking, "what?" "What he say?" "Why she look pissed?" "Why they fightin?" It was a Mess!! Anyway, there were unsupervised kids - laughing, Screaming and running around which added to my confusion. Eventually I got up and proceeded to one of the movie theater here in waco, which I should have done in the first place, and i fully realized once there - that Avengers had an actual storyline, which was so funny and entertaining! In conclusion, I've only gone once and once has been enough for an entire lifetime. If I want to blow money away again - like I did on that one particular day, I'll just stay at home and order a george foreman grill. Good luck and Happy trails! read more

Pleased that this classic cinema is back in business in the Wack! Doesn't have many screens but they provide food and snacks and alcohol to order during the movie. My one complaint is the chairs are heavy. They aren't normal movie theater seats. They're bulky and cumbersome. The one thing I could compare them to are seats you see at basketball games that players and coaches are sitting in. Hippodrome also has a dining room bar area if you want to chill and don't want to see a movie during lunch. read more

I like the concept of the Hippodrome. We went to see Thor for my sister's birthday and there was a ticket mixup. No biggie. I booked my tickets under my name and my sister booked under hers. We have the same name so they combined all of our tickets (like 7 total). When we got there to pick them up, they wouldn't give us the tickets because they were so confused. We ended up missing the first 15 mins of the movie standing there while they tried to sort it out. When they still couldn't sort it out, they just let us go in. That was frustrating. On top of that, my nachos came out cold. They must have been the first thing made and then just sat out cooling off for 20 mins or something. Nothing worse that paying $14 for cold artificial cheese. Service was ok. It took a long time to get food but that's not the servers fault. I felt bad about paying so much for such a blah experience. read more

We had a private room for 13 and had kids so we were too loud at times! Private room provided to us!!! It would have been best to call ahead.. I forgot to make reservations. I just can't see myself coming back here. The service is just deplorable. I came and met my friend my first weekend in Waco for Sunday brunch. She arrived about 15 minutes before me and when I got there she was still waiting for someone to come take her drink order. This was the beginning of the end. I am not at all as tolerant as she. So I tapped the first person I saw to take our drink order. Very uninformed as to what beers they had on tap. Gave me an incorrect beer listing and then had to come back about 15 minutes later to tell me that they did not have what he thought they had. We were sitting in the bar area at a table by the window so I asked if they could put on the NBA playoffs. 20 minutes later no one had addressed the TV situation. So I got up and walked to the bar and ask them to put the playoffs on. Their solution was to hand me the remote for me to find it myself. As I had just got to Waco a week ago I did not know the channels on Direct TV. So I spent about 10 minutes scrolling through the channels looking for the playoff game. 20 minutes and someone comes to take our order. I ordered a brunch plate and my friend ordered something from the regular menu. My food was cold. The bacon was fatty and it was not good at all. The manager came by and asked about our meal and I told him just the same he did not offer to change anything out at all. Told me some people like their bacon cooked that way. So at this point I was really ready to go. But where is our waiter? Couldn't find him. My girl finally gets up and goes up to the bar looking for him to cash out our ticket. Shame on them and I would not come back here for brunch. They say they have a happy hour so maybe I will check that out if I'm sitting directly at the bar. But I doubt it. Hippodrome Mondays for free movies are an awesome event for the community. That's the only positive. If I could do a review on the movie experience, I'd rate that 5 stars. But because the restaurant is tied to the movies, I'll have to resort to this: Food: Below average. Stuffed French toast was nothing like the photo and tasted terrible. Service: Maybe it was a bad Sunday? But female bartender did next to nothing to be welcoming. When we would say, "thank you" she would just reply, "mhmm." Where are your manners? Use your words. You work in their service industry. The male server who delivered our food mumbled and grumbled the entire time, but perhaps it was because he was the only one working hard. I'm usually a great tipper but there was nothing great about this experience. May want to work a lot on customer service. Will not be returning. read more

After waiting 7 months before returning to the theater after one bad experience, I decided to give it a second chance to go watch Avengers Endgame. Ordered 1 popcorn, waited nearly 2 hours and no popcorn ever arrived. I spoke to the manager about it. She had two buckets delivered to us 30 minutes before the movie was over. We were charged for 2 buckets though, so that was annoying. My best advice is don't go to this theater hungry. There's a 70% chance you won't get your food. The movie was great, theater was nice, but the service wasn't great. read more

WORST MOVIE THEATER EXPERIENCE EVER! Several years ago and it was a fun experience but something has changed. We took our grandkids to see the Polar Express. We got there 30 minutes early, ordered a popcorn, drinks, chicken nuggets...IT NEVER SHOWED UP...repeated queries yielding NOTHING. When the movie ended I went to the counter to get my money back and after 30 MINUTES of waiting for the manager to sort it out, he said...and I quote "We are sorry, you should see the refund for the order reflected in a day or two...PLEASE COME BACK AGAIN" .... We were one of 4 families who were there with young children and all had the same issue. Oh by the way the theater chairs are simply folding chairs and a folding table...When I asked about comp tickets I was ignored...(I was just curious). Our 4-year old summed it up best when he said 'the movie was mean, they did not bring our food and popcorn and I was thirsty' btw...we had to ask the booth to turn up the sound because you could not hear the movie!!! The management is clueless on how to run a theater, serve food, provide a welcoming environment and customer service...this IS NOT A THEATER! read more

I will never go to the Hippodrome again after recently giving it a 2nd try. It's very apparent that no one that works there truly knows whats going on and take no pride in the place, which is sad because there is a lot of potential there since the renovation. This place really needs an experienced manager to take over and micro manage every aspect of theater/kitchen operations. Just a few reasons why my review is low: On both visits, my order came out wrong. On both visits, the food/snacks were subpar. On both visits, any question asked of employees was met with "I don't know", or a befuddled look on their face. The theater gave off an appearance of disarray, to include the box office of all places. The entire experience on both of my visits was a general let down. I will not be returning. read more

We enjoy seeing movies at the Hippodrome. They usually have a family-friendly option available, which is great for us. The seats are very comfortable and it's great to be able to eat dinner during the movie and have everything brought to you. The food is excellent and well-priced. I recommend dressing warmly because the theaters are pretty cold no matter what season it is. However, 2 out of the last 3 times we have been there, the service has not been good. They forget to bring us our drinks, silverware, and food, or don't prepare it correctly. I ordered a salad and they did not bring a fork so I could eat it. I asked the person who brought it to bring one and they assured me someone would bring it right out, but nobody brought one for at least 20 minutes even though our sever was coming in and out of the theatre and we had our call button pressed. My salad and my son's burger were also missing ingredients. My son and my friend did not get their drinks for over 30 minutes even though we reminded the server who brought our food. They also misunderstood our order and brought an extra order of fries, which thankfully they took off our bill. Our friend in another theatre did not get his entire meal. (They ended up bringing it late but he was not charged for it because of their mistake.) The previous visit I ordered a salad and they did not bring utensils for a long time and said thy had run out. We ordered hot cocoa and they forgot to bring it. I think if you go to a movie showing earlier in the day the service might be better, bc one time we went to a Sunday afternoon showing and had no problems except having to wait a while for an appetizer. No matter what time you go, the food does take a while to arrive. If you plan on going during a busy time, maybe arrive 30 minutes early and order food so you can actuality enjoy the movie instead of dealing with your food and drink orders. read more

We've been here multiple times in the two years we've lived here and unfortunately the service has been sub par at most. This time was the last straw.. we ordered our food approximately 30 minutes before the movie started... and hour later and counting we had nothing. The excuse? "Well we are busy". I'm cool with things being busy and I'm great with the service here usually bit the attitude and lack of care tonight really rubbed me the wrong way. Ummm -- extremely awful service ! Understaffed -- manager made all kinds of excuses that they were too busy to offer good service --/ took 30 minutes to get water to our theater table - another 30 min to get our cocktails because they said they had to go to the store to get more cups --. This is a great theater. I really liked the service for food and drinks. They come to you and take your order and they were fast and polite. We enjoyed the nice comfortable reclining chairs and movable trays. I will definitely be going back for future movies. read more

We walked in seated ourselves Becca no one acknowledged us. Ordered drinks then waited forever for the server to take our order. Appetizer was good Chips and Queso but the BLT was extremely small and I could have made better in my kitchen. The ordered a burger with egg but it came with no egg so we sent it back and then it came back with a burnt bun! So the server brought a bun so we could move the contents over to it. We sent it back after speaking with the manager. Less than stellar service. Disappointing. read more
