My son has participated in just about every facet of instruction that Fulcrum surf school offers! My son had been surfing for a few years but no experience in competitions when he joined the surf team at Earl Warren middle school. This is where we met Dan, owner of Fulcrum, and Justin, the schools surf team coach (Fulcrum instructor). The Fulcrum coaches did a fantastic job of getting my son mentally and physically prepared for competitive surfing as well as meeting his own personal surfing goals. By participating in their "Elite" program after school my son was able to enhance his skills with personal instruction, video analysis and gym workouts weekly. He has enjoyed both their winter and summer camps as well as a trip of a life time last April of 2011 when my son, a group of kids, and instructors went on their "Spring Break" trip to El Salvador. The kids experienced warm water surfing, big waves, an appreciation for the culture and even brought gifts for the children of El Salvador. This level of safe, quality instruction, camps, and classes is what you will find at Fulcrum Surf. I came to San Diego to see if this would be a nice place to live so I signed up for a surf lesson through my hotel L'Auberge for fun. Wow! What a great experience. I was greeted by Stephen Moore who immediately brought me into the realm of what its like to surf. I've never tried it, how did I get so lucky to have a coach who won the 2008 US Championships and the Western Championships in 2014? He provided me with everything needed. Board, brand new wet suit, and topnotch techniques. Practice, practice. It is a pleasure to have someone like Stephen to help me learn. He totally kept an eye on me, watching for areas I needed to work on, setting me up for waves and guiding me on paddling out when you are facing a wave about to crest. It can be intimidating, but not so with the tips I got. Positive, motivated and encouraging. He is such a gift. Not only was it a great experience, I also got the inside local view on the cool areas to check out for a possible relocation here. From young kids to adults, beginners to seasoned surfers, Dan Mori and his team at Fulcrum surf will have the program for your needs. My young children have attended his summer camps, and my high school teen has been coached by Dan and his other instructors since middle school. Dan takes great pride in hiring top notch people--people that can be role models for our kids--they are talented surfers, excellent teachers, caring, positive and fun. Many of the local surf companies literally grab surfers off the beach and ask if they want to work their summer camps--not Fulcrum. I know my kids are in good hands every summer. Though Fulcrum is great with kids, they also offer fantastic adult programs. I put together a small mom's group that wanted to learn to surf. Dan thought we would benefit from working with women instructors and he went the extra mile to find them for us. This is an exceptional surf training organization with by far the best coaching staff in the industry. While I am not an advanced surfer, I clearly understand that having proper surfing fundamentals is paramount, and the coaches at Fulcrum seem to share that philosophy. They are absolute professionals from start to finish - even just booking and scheduling lessons is easy, and their sick website is indicative of this level of professionalism and commitment to providing the highest quality. My instructor, Dan Mori, has tremendous surfing knowledge/expertise, and he applies a highly customized approach with clear focus on optimizing client surfing performance. Furthermore, despite having a very extensive professional surfing background and undoubtedly being a world-class surfer, he is very humble and cool. I booked a surf camp with Fulcrum Surf as a birthday gift for my wife. A few days before the camp, they canceled it without warning or explanation. When I reached out, they offered store credit instead of a refund, even though the cancellation was entirely on their end. Since then, my calls and emails have been completely ignored. The only reply I got was a one-liner... mocking me (see attached screenshot). No apology, no accountability, no basic decency. Sadly, I've since connected with others who've had similar experiences. This is clearly a pattern, not a one-off. I strongly urge anyone considering Fulcrum Surf to look elsewhere. A company that treats its customers this way does not deserve your business. read more

I had a lesson with Dan and he was great. He spent time with me on the beach explaining the key strategies and helping me understand what I was doing and what I needed to do. After we went through the motions for getting up for about 10 minutes, he took me out and stayed with me and kept setting me up to catch waves. He set me up for about 25 waves and kept giving feedback on what adjustments I needed to make. Afterward he was very helpful explaining which type of board (definitely a big long board in my case) would be good and gave me ideas around yoga and how to practice on dry land. He even gave me about an extra 15-20 minutes since he wanted me to catch a wave all the way to the beach. read more

My family visited the Del Mar area a couple days ago and my 17 year old daughter wanted to learn to surf. I thought it would be a very frustrating experience at the beginning but it was just the opposite because of Fulcrum Surf, and particularly instructor Stephen Moore. She was able to get up on the second try. She told me she knows it was because of Stephen's amazing instruction. He was encouraging and absolutely loves the sport. His passion was addicting and my daughter is now obsessed and wants to go nonstop. It was truly an awesome experience for her and we will be looking up Fulcrum Surf and Stephen Moore the next time we visit the area! read more

My wife and I heard about Fulcrum from friends who frequently get from CO to Del Mar to surf. Needless to say, we had a terrific time and learned a lot over a 2hr lesson. Due to the excellent proficiency of our instructor, Steve Moore, we progressed from working on balance/form in the inside break, to getting outside and really surfing! Steve is a terrific instructor who has enormous patience, does a fantastic job of articulating what to focus on to help progress, and most importantly, makes the whole experience really fun. I love sports and have taken many lessons in other sports, but have never had an instructor like GC; probably the best instructor I've ever had....... My two kids, 12 and 18, had a blast with Willie as their surf coach for private lessons. They were at different levels and he was great with both of them. Very encouraging and made them both feel successful. Each kid had success at standing up on the board multiple times. He covered safety too, and gave advice for learning to surf at a beach full of locals. A great set-up with board, wetsuits and easy to find and park. Booking was simple and convenient. Our son has participated in several programs at Fulcrum Surf. The varied programs are what we have always enjoyed there...from ISPE, private & group coaching, strength training and surf trips to exotic locales, Fulcrum provides a professional surfing experience. Spring Break 2015 was spent in Southern California for our family. Best activity of the entire trip? Surfing lessons with Gian Carlos for my 12 year old and my 9 year old! They LOVED the hour they spent with him in the water...and begged for more. Both kids popped right up on the first wave and felt so proud with the biggest smiles! My husband and I live in Boston and spent 5 days in San Diego; Del Mar and Solana Beach. We cannot speak highly enough about our surf experience with Fulcrum. I have never surfed before, and was up on the second try! Our instructors were Stephen, Connor and my husband surfed two days so he also had Ryan. Dan did an excellent job for me in helping me locate and obtain a great deal on a wet suit for my son for Christmas. When it looked like there was no way I could get one to Connecticut on time, Dan intervened and made it all happen. Very frustrated with Fulcrum! Thought we paid $95 for a lesson, but were billed $150. When we asked about it, Justin told us our coach was now a 'premium' coach and the cost was now $150. They did refund the difference, but we thought this was very underhanded as well as overpriced and we were not told ahead of time. read more

Loved it! We had so much fun after our first lesson, we decided to do another one before the end of our vacation. Steve and Scott helped us get up way more than we expected. My daughter was even doing a switch jump by the end of the second session! We'll definitely plan on more lessons when we return to Del Mar. read more

Excellent day at the beach! We had a large group with a bunch of kids and the instructors did a fabulous job. Our 3 instructors were amazing, patient and very helpful.
