My wife surprised me with surf lessons with my son this weekend for my birthday. It was awesome. I'm always more concerned with my son's well being than my own but one of the instructors never left his side (he is 6 years old). He was patient with him, encouraging with him, and helpful. That's all you can ask. My instructor was also very friendly and helped me out a lot. They provided appropriate fitting wetsuits and had boards for each of us. Wow. What a great experience! I was looking for some lessons for my son who is in his early 20's and my teenage daughter. My son is home from college for the summer, and I thought it would be a great bonding experience for them. They love spending time together, and they had a blast. I was specifically looking for someone working at the Oceanside harbor because I feel like it's the perfect learning beach. You can walk a board out to some waves, so you don't feel like you're in deep water. That's comforting, and makes learning easier. But the reason this place gets 5 stars is a) the personal attention you get from this family business, and b) the focus on what we need rather than just making money. On the first point, this team works hard all day, but I still received a call back in the evening. I was able to text back and get lessons set up. It was a very personal experience, and they made me feel like family. On the second point, I asked if they sold packages of lessons. I'm local, and thought we might need more lessons. But he suggested that we do one lesson, practice a while, and then get another one when it's time to level up a bit. The thing is, it's clear to me that they aren't being kind just to keep a good reputation. They are just the kind of people that treat you right because it's in their nature. I'm grateful to have such great people in our community. I look forward to those level-up lessons. Oh, and if you're a tourist, they will clearly treat you the same way. We absolutely loved our experience with Learn to Rip. We were visiting the area and wanted to get the kids into some surf lessons. We contacted them via the website and a phone call, they contacted us back within a few minutes and we had lessons scheduled for the next day. The day of lessons, the boards and wetsuits were ready before we arrived. Chris met us for our lessons. He was great. He helped the kids figure out the wetsuits (none had ever used a wetsuit before). He was patient and kind with them. His overall disposition was super chill and kind. He spent some time going over safety in the water, then went over technique, after that they were off. We scheduled a 2 hour lesson. The kids had so much time to practice. Chris helped each one individually for the full 2 hours. They all took turns with him as he helped them learn. The kids said he was very encouraging and truly believed in them. He helped them with their form and skill and genuinely wanted each one of them to succeed. When he saw that a skill was obtained, he would push them to try a bigger wave. Thank you SO much Chris! LTR is way more than meets the eye. John is pretty much at South Jetty 5-6 days a week year round. His credentials are impossible to overstate. He offers a full suite of teaching, from intro to surfing lessons for that kid or adult with barely any water time and zero surfing experience, to coaching several USA Prime (the Olympic development team) surfers and he even had a student go pro recently. I've got a young daughter who is pretty shy around men who loves John and pretty much did from the first private lesson a year ago. She decided to try competitive surfing and John was the perfect fit. Since then she's done a few private lessons, several group lessons and even just finished a summer camp with him (she's never slept better). John has helped her learn to do things and challenge herself in ways she never knew she was capable of. Even when you don't see John's tent on the beach, you'll probably find him running a group on the jetty... and his students dotted through the lineup on any given day. All those kids have so much respect for him that they're always giving it their all when just surfing on their own and not in a less, just in case John is looking. The people John has working for him during the summers are all carefully selected and top notch too. John knows everyone at the beach, from lifeguards to the trash guys and most everyone in the line-up. John is a well-known name at the highest levels of junior competitive surfing, but I would also encourage any first-timer to get with him and his team. Finally, John brings an integrity and character to his work that inspires his students to be the best version of themselves both in and out of the water. He sets the example. Its not just a professional facade either...you should see the way he is with his wife and kids when they show up at the beach. Just awesome. This may be a long review, but I want you to understand how thorough Coach John is because this sport is quite detail oriented & I never knew that myself. From the minute we requested an lesson with LTR we were treated as if we had known them for years. We met Coach John at Harbor Beach in Oceanside. We were early & had a chance to watch him interact with other students. His instruction was clear, concise, and most importantly individualized! When it was my son's (14) turn, he treated Riley with such respect & dignity. You would have thought they were old friends. He taught him how to slow down & watch the water; even described how different things (jetty, rip current, etc) affect the swell and the overall surfing experience. Coach John provided some initial pointers, even checking his wetsuit and board & then it was time to get in the water. When they came back in, Coach John was quick with his instruction, again being clear, concise, and individualized. My son listened & practiced & has fallen in love with the sport all because he had a phenomenal Coach who gave him the tools necessary to become successful. Me and a friend did a 2 person, 2 hour lesson with Learn to Rip - our instructor, Kristin, more than exceeded our expectations! We were both novice surfers (I had surfed only twice in my life before) but Kristen made the experience easy and enjoyable.
