we tried surf camp for our 8 year old, adventurous son and it was not a hit. he only went 2 of the 5 days because he said he was getting thrashed in the waves with no help paddling out and told that he wasn't allowed to sit on the beach when he was uncomfortable. there were only 4 instructors for 20 kids. read more

Amazing experience! My husband and I are in our 40s and decided to take a private lesson for his birthday. I'm so glad we found Gerry. I've tried surfing a few times over the years and was never really able to do it. I took a private lesson at another surf school in La Jolla a couple of months ago and never stood up once. I thought I was doomed but decided to try one more time. Gerry had me standing up in just a few waves! It was so much fun and I finally have the confidence that I CAN stand up and can get better if I keep practicing. He gave me a few very simple tips that did the trick. I just had a lesson with 3 of my friends! None of us had surfed before, but after around 2 hours with Gerry, all of us were able to stand up on the waves multiple times. Gerry has decades of experience in the sport and instruction, so we found him to be very knowledgeable. He was also fun to learn from! Even though we were a larger group (4 of us), we felt safe and each thought we got enough individual instruction to progress very well for our first lesson. He also gave us pointers on how to go surfing by ourselves after the lesson in safe ways that will improve our skills, including recommendations for equipment, good wave conditions to look for, and ideal surfing spots. My daughter had a wonderful experience with Gerry and his instructors. He provided everything promised for surf camp. The kid to teacher ratio was very small, they were in the water for the majority of camp, and by day 2 his kids were standing and catching waves. I can't recommend this place enough. I signed up for a group lesson with Gerry last week and it was awesome. I had never surfed before, and was looking for a simple lesson that would teach me all the basics so i could do it on my own. This was exactly that. He taught me everything I needed to know about how to surf, and even added in how to pick out good spots, what to watch out for, where to stray away from. It was very low key, and so much fun. Great surf school! I haven't had a surf lesson before, but I had a blast at this one. I was a little worried it might be odd since I'm 32 and it was primarily for kids, but the instructors were very helpful and professional. They clearly enjoy what they do and take their time to ensure everyone in the class gets individualized attention and catches plenty of waves! Great experience for my 8-year old daughter. Guys are professional but also easygoing. We were late to the beach one day and they were totally accommodating to me and my family. Leucadia is great. My girlfriend and I had a bad experience trying to set up lessons with another "surf school", and scrambled to find something else last minute. We called Leucadia the afternoon before and Jerry helped us get something set up for the next day at a great price. We did a group lesson (2 other people had signed up), and we had 2 instructors for 4 people. Jerry never tried to sell us on extra lessons, but said if we wanted to learn anything more advanced he would be more than happy to help, or even just rent us boards for the day if we wanted to come back. Leucadia didn't just get us "standing" on waves, but also taught us some basics for catching waves on our own, and how to read what is a good wave and what is not. I wish we would have had more time on our trip to go out surfing again. Riding in the last wave of the day with my girlfriend was one of the best experiences and the guys at Leucadia were just as excited as us to be out there in the water. We are back at our hotel now, after having several hours to process our time with Leucadia Surf School earlier today in Encinitas. It's going to be hard for me to adequately articulate how incredible our experience was but I will give it a shot. If I could have written the script for how I hoped today would go with my family I would have fallen short. I wanted to learn how to surf and love surfing. More importantly I wanted my family to do the same. We had some apprehensions and perhaps a little fear going into our three hour group lesson. When we met Gerry at the beach we all felt a sense of comfort and relief. Gerry is the real deal. Old school. Exactly what we wanted. He wanted exactly what we wanted. And that is for us to learn how to surf and love surfing. He delivered in a big way!!! He started by calming our apprehensions and getting us more than excited about getting in the water. He taught us great things about finding good waves, taught us how to be safe, and we all hopped into the water. Within 10 minutes we were all surfing, riding the waves to the shore! It was awesome!! Gerry was in the water right in the middle of all of us making sure we got exactly what we needed. "Do we have to stop" was one comment I heard when it was time to leave. Mission accomplished. Gerry is the best and I so highly recommend him! You will learn how to surf and you will love surfing if you connect with Gerry and Leucadia Surf School. read more

I reserched many surf camps for my daughter this summer. I went with these guys because they have been around forever and the prices were great. My daughter is quiet but she raved about the camp and the super helpful instructors. she went from having never surfed to feeling IT. She cant wait to surf now. She and I can do together and thats priceless. Then I emailed after asking for advise on boards and wetsuits and they got right back to me and contacted who they knew to help me get the best prices. My wife and I just had a "group" lesson -- it was just the two of us, and the owner/lead instructor Gerry gave us a great time. I was researching surf schools online, and here's what struck me, Leucadia said, "we don't do games we surf, what's more fun than surfing waves?" I grew up going to the beach. My parents didn't have a lot of money, but the beach was free, so that's where we went. The philosophy of this school stood out to me, so I went with it. I couldn't be happier. From the beat up van, to the no frills school, Gerry and his instructors are old school surfers. Their philosophy is "The more waves, the better." They don't bog you down with crazy instruction, they just let their patrons surf the waves. Their instruction has not only taught my 6 year old how to surf, but also have respect for the ocean, as their safety instruction is par none. My son loves Lucas, and he has taught my son how to grab his board, paddle out, and catch waves. I can't express how happy I am with this school! We'll be back for sure! read more

I really had an excellent time during my 2-hour group session on a weekday morning. I had a great time and was able to catch a ride on the first try. There were plenty of instructors and I was never waiting during the 2 hours. The school provided all the necessary equipment and were very good at providing the right size board and wet suit. I put my 8 year old boy into a four day camp, 3 hours a day. He had a great time and his surfing really improved. They spent little time on the beach and lots of time in the water. When I tried to teach him to surf he would only stay in for about 15 minutes but in the class/camp environment he was happy to spend about 2 hours in the water (in 2 sessions with a lunch break). Nice people, a good group of instructors that paid a lot of attention to my boy. On the last day I joined in and they even had a big popout board for me so I could catch some waves with my son. That was the highlight of my summer; to catch some waves with my little boy. I am planning on doing it again next summer. He loved it. read more

I took a lesson with Gerry at DelMar beach. The lesson ended up being a 2-hour private lesson and was my first lesson as a beginning surfer. Using one of his nice 9' foam boards, I was able to stand for short periods right away. On the beach we went over surfing safety, how to lie on board, the pop-up to standing, and then we hit the surf. I learned a lot of good basic things and now know to focus on developing my foot stance, when to pop-up, and getting my balance while standing....great start to a new sport for me...glad I took the lesson for sure... read more
