The alternator on my truck suddenly died and just like that, what was promising to be a fun trip, turned into a nightmare. More than just needing work, the alternator on this one is mounted on the bottom, behind the engine, right over the exhaust. While I do pretty much anything myself, I was on the road, far from home, and this job required big tools. If you are in such a situation, reading my review, you know the feeling. Trapped. Unlike my home auto repair market L.A. that is very saturated with such businesses, here in Redding, it seemed there is almost no where to go. And everyone was asking... let's just say an amount that would make an entire LaBrea (LA) come out of their shops and say "WTH? We can charge that?". But I kept searching. And I have found Steve. May I say "Fair Price"? Now, I know, I know. I thought so too. But, I had a pleasure of chatting with some of the local shops before I found Steve, (spent an entire previous day), so, I already knew better. Steve's shop looks like a normal auto shop is supposed to look, if you know what I mean. I liked that. I always want that. And was at the shop, met me personally, looked at everything, made some tests to be certain, and took the job. He showed me exactly which brand of the alternator he is going to install, and that was the one I would have chosen myself. And he kept his word and charged me exactly by the quote. No tricks whatsoever (trust me, I know them all, been around auto repair for a long time). He has two good mechanics there and the job was done perfectly. I like small details, and I always want the repair done right, I demand that from myself and from others. I looked over my truck after the repair, and I found myself to be completely satisfied. Nothing was forgotten, nothing broken, nothing put back the wrong way. Like a factory. Now, to me the price and quality matters, of course, I am just like everyone else. But, I tell you even more important is the quality of the man and his word. I always try to find the shop that is owned by the man who will stand behind his reputation. Steve is the man. If you have found yourself needing honest and qualified mechanical assistance, - my good advice to you is go see Steve. As a mechanically-disinclined person, trust is the most important thing for me with my mechanic. Thankfully, he is also very affordable! In fact, if there is a way he can save me money on parts he will do it. He helped me pick out a new undercarriage on Amazon rather than go through the manufacturer, which would have been way more expensive for the same quality. I've had my tune ups, brakes, and cylinders done by 530 Auto Repair. I just bought a new vehicle and will be scheduling an appointment to check it over. Initially, I had planned to drop off my vehicle on Tuesday but confirmed that Thursday would be the day for him to review it, when I notified him that the noise I thought was from the axles actually turned out to be from the U-joints. He stated that the review day was actually Thursday, not Tuesday. I told him that I'd call him back to confirm Tuesday or Thursday drop off, but clearly stated for sure on Thursday and that I would pay for his time. (I figured $1,000 to $1,500) to check out the vehicle. When I showed up on Wednesday, just to touch base about the Thursday drop-off, the owner immediately told me that he dropped me from his schedule, because I did not call to confirm. He expressed his personal opinion and became insulting and unprofessional. He accused me personally of being the reason his prices are going up, the reason he's "appointment only," and even the reason he doesn't answer his phone. He went so far as to say he didn't want to do business with me -- all because I supposedly didn't "call to confirm" Thursday, even though Thursday was already confirmed at the time of the U-joint/axle notification telephone call. Instead of acting professionally, for example "hey, you didn't call and I had to drop you from the schedule. I'd rather not do business if I can't trust you'll make the schedule, it wastes my time and I lose money" but he resorted to personal insults. His behavior was unprofessional, and extremely disappointing. I came here expecting honesty and mechanical expertise, not to have my integrity and personal character to be attacked. I just took the insults and kinda grinned in disbelief. If you value respectful treatment and professionalism, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. He knows who's writing this. This new shop also told me he dented the tensioner when he went in and cut the fan belt that I then had to replace which cost me an additional $600 on top of the real issue which was a broken water pump. Not only was this an extreme waste of time, he cost me an additional $600 for damage to my car that he caused.
